Ignoring Racist Tweets, 11-Year-Old Nails National Anthem ... Again

Beckykicksback

Suck it, racists.

After having racist tweets hurled in his direction, Sebastien de la Cruz was invited to sing again at the beginning of the Heat-Spurs game in San Antonio.

Pastime

Good thing we're too smart to spend all day being uselessly frustrated with ourselves. I mean, that'd be a hell of a waste, right?

Nine Months of Curiosity Roving in One Minute

by Susana Polo

Karl Sanford on YouTube has done the world a great service: he’s put together all of the pictures from the Curiosity Rovers first nine months in service (has it been nine months already? They grow up so fast… *sniff*) into what’s basically a one minute timelapse of the work the nuclear powered, car-sized robot that we put on Mars.

He also didn’t give it an audio track, which means I have prepared some options for you below the cut. Just hit play.

Dolphin-Assisted Birth—Possibly The Worst Idea, Ever.

Beckykicksback

BERGLAUG, I TOLD YOU THIS IS A THING

I consider myself to be a fairly grounded person, so I'm rarely shocked by anything I see on the internet. But then, this tweet by Emily Anthes appeared in my stream: O_o. The couple planning to do this are entirely serious—and they won't be the first to travel to Hawaii for a dolphin-assisted birth. My professional opinion: this has to be, hands down, one of the worst natural birthing ideas anyone has ever had (and that is saying a lot). Let's talk about dolphins for a moment. I ge

Extreme Bloody Mary, Wisconsin style

by Cory Doctorow
Beckykicksback

what the actual fuck

Take a look at this impressive, heavily loaded Bloody Mary, served at O'Davey's Irish Pub & Restaurant in Fond du Lac. (Also known as Davey's.)

This ultimate hangover cure is topped with an extensive beer chaser consisting of pop corn, bacon, peanuts, beans, sausage, pretzel, sliders, a pickle and (this is Wisconsin after all) a cracker and cheese curd. Plus a Brewers flag.

Wildest Bloody Mary you've ever seen creating buzz for Wisconsin [Gitte Laasby/Journal Sentinel]

I do not have words for how awesome this is.

A water tower atop a neglected building in Chelsea hosted a discreet nightclub for adventurous guests who had been given a mysterious timepiece.

Fears Of Killing Immigration Bill Doomed Same-Sex Amendment

Beckykicksback

I had a feeling this would happen. And even though it continues to hugely affect me, I totally understand why it didn't go through this time, and in a weird way, I'm kind of okay with it. Immigration reform is desperately needed, and goodness knows Congress has a hell of a time compromising on anything. This amendment didn't have a snowball's chance of getting through right wing camps anyway. I'd rather people more in need of reform (I'm thinking here particularly of undocumented folks who were brought to the States as kids and can't get work/school) get help now, then put them on hold with the rest of us. Greater good, and whatnot. Hopefully DOMA goes away and it all becomes a moot point.

It still fucking hurts, though.

Amid warnings the proposal would shatter support for the measure, Democrats backed away from a provision that would allow gay U.S. citizens to sponsor foreign-born spouses for green cards. Advocates for gay and lesbian immigration rights accused Democrats of caving in to threats.

An Ancient Religious Pilgrimage That Now Draws The Secular

Beckykicksback

I've wanted to do this for years.

The 1,200-year-old European pilgrimage route known as the Way of St. James is undergoing a revival. Tens of thousands of people are walking across France to the Spanish coastal city of Santiago de Compostela, and the relics of St. James. Once a religious affair, it's now a cultural and social phenomenon as well.
