Leap Motion revealed a new video today showing off the device's gesture control capabilities with Windows 7 and 8. When plugged into a Windows OS device, the Leap Motion will support full multitouch gestures out of the box, allowing users to click, drag, scroll, swipe and rotate screens entirely with gestural input. Leap Motion's previous demos focused on native apps and building out the device's Airspace app store, but the latest news confirms that the device will also be useful for OS-level navigation. The company will enter its recently announced beta testing round next month, before the product's final release on July 22nd.

في حدث مميز أقامته مجموعة SQL Server Path ، عقد يوم الخميس 4-أكتوبر-2012 في قاعة المؤتمرات بمدينة الملك عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية (KACST) في الرياض،حضره قرابة 300 شخص معضمهم من الطلاب والطالبات.

ألقيت فيه المحاضرة الأولى بعنوان: “كل ماتود فعله ومعرفته لتكون موظفاً ناجحاً في مجال قواعد البيانات – نسخة الطلاب والطالبات“.

استغرقت المحاضرة ساعة من الزمن وحضرها 300 شخص تقريباً.

سعدت كثيراً بهذا الحضور المتميز، كما سعدت بالأسئلة ونوعيتها التي استقبلتها خلال المحاضرة وفي فترة استراحة الغداء، كذلك الأسئلة التي وصلتني على حسابي في تويتر وعلى وسم (هاش تاق) الحدث وهو #SSP1 .

حدث SQLSaturday عبارة عن يوم كامل من المحاضرات المتعلقة بقواعد البيانات المعتمدة على SQL Server يقام يوم السبت تستضيفة مدينة ما (في مكان تعليمي أو مجتمعي غير ربحي) بعد التنسيق مع رابطة مهني/محترفي SQL Server والمعروفة بالاسم (Professional Association for SQL Server) أو باختصارها “باس” PASS.

تقوم “باس” (PASS) بإعطاء رقماً للحدث (بناء على التسلسل الذي وصل إليه – حالياً تعدى المائتين بقليل –) فور الحجز، إضافة إلى تأسيس موقع للحدث يتاح من خلاله تسجيل الحضور، المتطوعين، والمتحدثين. كما يوفر الموقع إمكانية مشاهدة جدول محاضرات المؤتمر، معلومات حول المحاضرات والمحاضرين مع إمكانية تنزيل المحاضرات لاحقاً، ومعلومات عن موقع إقامة الحدث وطريقة الوصول إليه، الفنادق القريبة (أحياناً يكون هناك رمز تخفيض خاص للحضور)، الأخبار المتعلقة بالحدث، ومعلومات عن الرعاة.

يعلن عن الحدث قبل أشهر (قد تصل إلى 6 أشهر أو أكثر) من موعد إقامته حيث يفتح باب التقديم لمن يرغب بالمشاركة سواء في إلقاء محاضرة، حضور فعاليات الحدث، أو في الأعمال التطوعية المختلفة (مثل: التسجيل الميداني، تسليم بطاقات الحضور، تنظيم وتوزيع وجبات الغذاء، تنظيف المكان بعد نهاية الحدث، أو حتى إزالة الجليد عن الطريق المؤدي للمدخل ووضع اللافتات الإرشادية المؤدية لمكان الحدث).

يتاح المشاركة في إلقاء محاضرة إلى ما قبل شهر من موعد الحدث، حيث يتم التصويت على المحاضرات وإنتقاء المناسب منها بعد وضع مسارات (tracks) للمحاضرات إذا كانت هناك مشاركة كبيرة من المتحدثين وعدد المحاضرات يسمح بذلك. حيث عادة تكون هناك أكثر من محاضرة في نفس الوقت في مسارات مختلفة قد تكون عامة مثل: إدارة قواعد البيانات (Database Administration)، تطوير قواعد البيانات (Database Development)، ذكاء الأعمال (Business Intelligence) أو متخصصة مثل: الفهرسة (Indexing) وتطوير التقارير وإدارتها (Report Development and Administration) أو بالجمع بين العام والمتخصص خاصة إذا كانت المشاركة قليلة ولا توجد محاضرات متزامنة بالوقت.

أغلب المدن التي استضافت حدث SQLSaturday كانت أمريكية، وهنالك مدن كندية، أوروبية، جنوب أمريكية، وأسترالية. وفي الآونة الأخيرة أقيم الحدث في الهند وتركيا.

تتطلع مجموعة SQL Server Path لإقامة هذا الحدث في الرياض خلال عام 2013م  وإن حدث ذلك فسيكون حدث SQLSaturday قد وصل ولأول مرة إلى منطقة الشرق الأوسط!

حضرت في السابق (8 نوفمبر 2011م) حدث SQLSaturday (كان يحمل الرقم 92) في مدينة بورتلاند في ولاية أوريغون الأمريكية. كان ذلك قبل يومين من إنطلاقة مؤتمر “باس 2011″ (PASS Summit 2011) في مدينة سياتل في ولاية واشنطن والتي تبعد عنها قرابة الثلاث ساعات بالقطار.

في ذلك اليوم (8 نوفمبر 2011)، كنت قد سألت مؤسس مجموعة SQL Server  في ولاية أوريغون “آرني رولاند” (Arnie Rowland) عما إذا كانوا سينظمون حدث SQLSaturday مرة أخرى في 2012 قبل مؤتمر “باس 2012″ مباشرة حيث يتسنى لنخبة من الخبراء المعروفين في المجال المشاركة إما بتقديم محاضرة كمتحدث أو بالحضور والإلتقاء بهم. خاصة وأنهم قد قدموا من كل القارات لأجل المشاركة في مؤتمر “باس” إما كمتحدثين أو بالحضور. فأخبرني، أنهم قد أتموا التجهيزات لذلك (نعم لحدث سيقام بعد سنة)! منذ ذلك الحين، عقدت النية لحضور حدث SQLSaturday القادم في حال أن استطعت حضور مؤتمر “باس 2012″ (PASS Summit 2012).

عندما قررت حضور مؤتمر “باس 2012″، تقدمت لموقع حدث SQLSaturday (كان يحمل الرقم 172) والذي خصص للحدث الذي سيقام في مدينة بورتلاند، حيث قمت بإرسال إحدى محاضراتي وكانت بعنوان (A Tour in The Indexing World!) وذلك بكتابة عنوان المحاضرة، وصف مختصر لها، والمستوى الذي تستهدفه. إضافة إلى نبذة عني كوني المتحدث أو من سيلقي المحاضرة – وذلك حسب البيانات المطلوبة في النموذج الخاص بذلك.

بعده بحوالي 10 أيام من إغلاق وقت التقديم على المحاضرات (1 أكتوبر 2012)، تلقيت رسالة على بريدي الإلكتروني تفيدني بأنه قد تم اختياري لإلقاء محاضرتي المقدمة، وأنها ستكون في مسار (track) الفهرسة (Indexing) عند الساعة التاسعة صباحاً في قاعة المؤتمرات أ (Conf. A).

سعدت بذلك، خاصة وأن المتقدمين كانوا كثر (بحكم قرب الحدث زمنياً وجغرافياً من مؤتمر “باس 2012″)، وكانوا من ضمن أفضل المتحدثين والمختصين في مجال قواعد بيانات SQL Server  في العالم. ليس كل المتقدمين قد تم قبولهم وليس كل من تم قبوله كمتحدث قد قبل جميع ما أرسل من محاضرات (لم يتم قبول أكثر من محاضرة واحدة للمتحدث بحكم المنافسة الشديدة – برأيي-، إلا متحدثاُ واحد حيث قسم محاضرته إلى قسمين).

المشاركة في هذا الحدث تعني الكثير بالنسبة لي، ليست لأنها أولى المحاضرات التي ألقيها خارج المملكة العربية السعودية فحسب، بل لأنها لم تكن في حدث عادي كاجتماع شهري لمجموعة اهتمام أو مستخدمين – بل كانت في حدث معروف يتبع رسمياً لمنظمة “باس” (PASS) وفي نسخة مميزة فوق العادة نظراً لتواجد نخبة من المميزين في المجال قد قدموا من كل مكان للمشاركة في مؤتمر “باس 2012″ في الأساس. فكان ذلك الحدث، وكأنه نسخة مصغرة من مؤتمر “باس” لكن في يوم واحد.

كانت هذه المشاركة فرصة للإلتقاء عن قرب بأناس عرفتهم عن بعد، من خلال قراءتي لمدوناتهم أو كتبهم وأحياناً حضوري أو مشاهدتي لمحاضراتهم، مثل:

• Aaron Nelson (أحد أشهر الخبراء في المجال ومتحدث دائم في كبرى المؤتمرات المتعلقة بتقنيات مايكروسوفت).
• Arnie Rowland (الذي قدمني للمتحدثين في ليلة الحدث حيث أقيم تجمع صغير للتعارف في احدى الشركات التقنية الناشئة – كما قدم لي هدية بسيطة لكن لها معنى وذلك بعد إلقائي لمحاضرتي).
• Brent Ozar (أحد أشهر الخبراء والذي يعمل في شركة يديرها).
• Buck Woody (خبير مايكروسوفت المعروف والشخص المرح الجاد).
• Hugo Kornelis (كان قد ألقى محاضرتين رائعتين بعدي في نفس المسار).
• Paul Turley (الذي عرض علي استخدام جهازه الخاص الذي بدوره لم يعمل حاله كجهازي مع جهاز عرض البيانات “البروجيكتور” قبل أن يتم استبداله).
• Tim Mitchell (كان رائعاً ومنشغلاً بالتحضير لأكثر من محاضرة له في مؤتمر “باس” فكان ملازماً في غرفة المتحدثين أكثر الوقت).

وكان من ضمن قابلتهم في المعرض المصاحب، Karla Landrum التي تعد أحد الجنود المجهولين في منظمة “باس” (PASS)، والتي لا بد لأي شخص في مجموعة مهتمة في مجال SQL Server منظمة للمنظمة إلا وغالباً قد تعامل معها وقدمت له ما يحتاج من دعم ومساندة.

كان هذا ملخصاً عن الطريقة التي اتبعتها لأكون متحدثاً في هذا الحدث المميز، شاركتها لعلها تدب الحماس يوماً في أحد، فلربما كانت نقطة تحول له وانطلاقة جديدة نحول الأفضل.

فإذا كنت مهتماً في مجال قواعد البيانات عموماً و SQL Server خصوصاً فلا تفوت هذه الفرصة، وسارع بالتسجيل على موقع الحدث. التسجيل إلزامي لحضور الفعالية وهو مجاني.

الحضور متاح للرجال والنساء، والمحاضرات ستكون باللغة الإنجليزية (آمل أن نتمكن من جعل أحد المسارات – على الأقل – باللغة العربية في العام القادم – يمكنك التواصل معي إذا كنت مهتماً بذلك وترغب بإعطاء محاضرة في العام القادم).

نصيحة لكل من قام بالتسجيل وهي بالحضور المبكر حتى تستلم بطاقات الدخول قبل بدء المحاضرات وحتى لا يفوته شيء منها. بطاقات الدخول ضرورية جداً، ولن يسمح بدخول القاعات بدونها.

Along with claiming more than 200 million users worldwide, Viber's also taking this day to announce what it is referring to as the biggest update to the service yet. For starters, the Viber for Android and iOS applications have both been on the receiving end of a pretty meaningful refresh, following the recent introduction of VoIP calling on older versions of BlackBerry OS. An all-new desktop app will, as of today, also be available to Viber users on a Mac or PC (Linux coming soon, we're told), packing in most of the features the service is well-known for but in a less-mobile form.

Folks using Viber's iOS and Android apps will see many changes to the overall user experience in version 3.0, including added support for video messages, a novel voice engine to help improve call quality, the ability to check contacts' online status and a completely redesigned interface. Meanwhile, the newly minted Viber Desktop features video calling and seamlessly integrates / syncs with the mobile offerings -- which makes things like being able to transfer ongoing voice calls between devices possible. While chatting with the company's CEO, Talmon Marco, he told us development for BlackBerry 10 is in its "advanced stages," adding that the latest Viber apps were built from the ground up and are all part of the goal to "be better and avoid the same mistake" as other similar platforms.

Google recently updated its Hangout chat client with the same remote desktop control tech integrated into Chrome. This slick new feature gives you the option to take control of someone's computer (with their permission, of course) during a video call. To begin a remote session, start a Hangout and click View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop. Nokia's Lumia 928 for Verizon has long been rumored, but an alleged billboard poster appears to hint that its arrival is imminent. My Nokia Blog spotted a billboard for Nokia's Lumia 928, complete with new renders of the device. It's not immediately clear if the billboard is genuine, but the Finnish smartphone maker appears to claim in the ad that the 928 has "the best low-light smartphone camera," alongside Verizon and Windows Phone logos.

The photos of the rear of the device match previously leaked images complete with the new Xenon flash. Nokia's apparent claims on the billboard suggest that the company is likely utilizing its new LED and Xeon flash combo to improve the already impressive low-light performance from the Lumia 920. Nokia says it will hold a special Lumia event in London on May 14th. The Finnish smartphone maker has started sending out media invites for the event, with a cryptic clue that it will focus on Lumia. "See what's next" says the invite, followed by: "The Nokia Lumia story continues." The event will run from 10AM until 4PM and focus on what's next for Nokia Lumia.

It's not immediately clear from the invite exactly what Nokia plans to unveil, but the Lumia name drop suggests the company is ready to reveal a new smartphone. Images of Nokia's alleged "Catwalk" device emerged recently, suggesting that the company may be ready to introduce its first aluminum Lumia. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg launched an immigration reform group, FWD.us, earlier this month, designed to promote innovation and investment in the US jobs market. After teaming up with some high-profile technology executives and venture capitalists to form the group, Zuckerberg is adding some more household names today: Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.

Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, and Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, will both join Brad Smith, Microsoft general counsel, and Napster co-founder Sean Parker as part of the FWD.us group. Existing supporters also include Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Google chairman Eric Schmidt. A 3D telepresence technology that started life as a Microsoft research project may soon become an official product, a new job listing suggests. Microsoft has begun advertising for a new software development engineer who will be tasked with helping it develop hardware and software capable of offering holographic meetings for remote workers. The company says it is also looking to extend the technology to Skype, allowing consumers to enjoy "high-definition communication" in its voice and video calling software.

Microsoft has tried a number of ways to advertise Windows Phone handsets, but the latest pits two rivals against each other. In a new minute-long spot that's due to air on US national TV, a wedding reception is interrupted by Apple and Samsung fans. "Would you mind moving your enormous phone," asks one iPhone 5 user, before the guests—a clear 50 / 50 split of iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy users—begin to trade insults. One member searches for "one-trick pony" using Siri, while another fires back, "Aren't you a little young to have an iPhone?"

Internet giant Google has changed the tagline on the homepage of its Palestinian edition from "Palestinian Territories" to "Palestine". The change, introduced on 1 May, means google.ps now displays "Palestine" in Arabic and English under Google's logo. Using the word Palestine is controversial for some. Israeli policy is that the borders of a Palestinian state are yet to be agreed. In November, the UN gave Palestine the status of "non-member observer state". The decision by the General Assembly was strongly opposed by Israel and the United States. Previously, Palestine only had "observer entity" status.

After successfully overtaking the primary Associated Press Twitter account—its highest-profile "hack" to date —the Syrian Electronic Army turned its sights on the Guardian over the weekend. The group targeted and temporarily gained access to 11 Guardian-related accounts, all of which were revealed on its website. Many of the accounts (including Guardian Books and Guardian Travel) remain suspended as of today, though others seem to have been successfully recovered.

Guardian staffer James Ball confirms that, much like in the AP attack, the SEA deployed cleverly-disguised phishing emails to carry out its most recent batch of hacks.

As these social engineering exploits persist, Twitter is said to be working on two-factor authentication—a security measure that would go a long way towards preventing these exploits. For now, it seems the best precaution potential targets can take is to be extra wary when dealing with email links.

David Ferrer, the 4th ranked tennis player in the world right now (which probably makes him the best tennis player you never heard of), made a silly unforced error off the tennis court today: he tweeted about how happy he is with his new Samsung Galaxy S4 from... his iPhone. Whoops!

Like how BlackBerry spokesperson Alicia Keys got caught using an iPhone, Ferrer made the same embarrassing mistake of shilling for a company while actually using its competitor's device. The offending tweet, which was obviously supposed to be an advertisement to his followers, said:

That translates to: I'm happy with my new Galaxy S4, setting up S Health on my Galaxy S4 to help me with my training.

Hey look Ferrer's followers, he's actually using all those crazy features of the S4! Only totally not, as that tweet came from his iPhone. The tweet from the iPhone, which was spotted by Jaime Novoa, was promptly deleted and replaced with the same tweet but from a different device (no guarantee it was the Samsung Galaxy S4).

It's not a good look for Samsung when it's paying athletes to use the S4 and yet those sponsored athletes continue to use their iPhones. [Jaime Novoa via TUAW]

Xbox Live is currently experiencing a significant service disruption, with many users reporting problems when trying to sign in to Microsoft's online gaming platform. The outage — which inconveniently comes during peak weekend gaming hours — has subsequently rendered a large part of the console's functionality useless for the time being. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has led a $5 million investment round in Business Insider, the six-year-old online media outfit run by former Wall Street analyst Henry Blodget.

The investment came about after a dinner Bezos and Blodget had some months ago. "We had dinner a while back," Blodget wrote in an e-mail to Mashable. "A few months later he expressed interest in investing. I said, 'Hell, yeah!'"

Previous investors RRE Ventures and Institutional Venture Partners also participated in the $5 million Series E round. The investment, Bezos' first in the company, brings total investment to more than $18.3 million, Blodget confirmed. He declined to state the company's valuation, writing, "That's double super-secret info. (I could tell you, but then they'd have to kill me.)" The exact amount of Bezos' contribution is unknown.
