É chegado aquele momento do ano em que a tradicionalíssima revista Cahiers du Cinema aponta os seus melhores do ano. E em 2012, um diretor conseguiu a proeza de emplacar dois filmes seus nesse prestigiado top 10. O americano Abel Ferrara emplacou o quarto e sétimo lugar, respectivamente com os filmes 4:44 Last Day On Earth e Go Go Tales, sendo este último uma produção de 2007 lançada comercialmente este ano. Mas quem ficou mesmo com o primeiro lugar foi um filme que tem previsão de estreia no Brasil ainda este ano: Holy Motors. E o segundo? There's always an expert who knows more than you do, and is very willing to sell you a book to let you know how wrong you are. For parents, this has gone on for hundreds of years, and produced some rather strange advice …at least strange to our ears. Playing with a baby will spoil him. Never hug or kiss your children. Don't feed a baby at night. You should start toilet training at two months. A short child is the mother's fault. And babies should start eating like adults as soon as possible.

After World War II, commercial baby food producers as well as pediatricians drastically lowered the age at which they recommended babies start solids. Between the 1930s and the 1950s, much to the delight of Gerber and Beech-Nut, the average age at which parents introduced solids plummeted from 7 months to four to 6 weeks, according to various surveys. Sackett, the same guy who feared insufficient strictness would lead to socialist babies, was at the leading edge of this trend, writing in 1962 that breast milk and formula were “deficient,” and therefore babies should be started on cereal at 2 days of age. At 10 days, they could have strained vegetables, and by 9 weeks old, the little one would be eating “bacon and eggs, just like Dad!” Sackett also recommended giving babies black coffee starting at 6 months of age, to get them used to “the normal eating habits of the family.”

According to law enforcement agencies, the rising popularity of Internet chat services like Skype has made it difficult to eavesdrop on suspects’ communications.

But now, Dennis Chang, president of Sun Valley-based VOIP-Pal, has received a patent for a “legal intercept” technology that Chang says “would allow government agencies to ‘silently record’ VoIP communications,” Slate Future Tense reports.

Voice over IP chat software allows people to make phone calls over the Internet by converting analog audio signals into digital data packets. Because of the way the packets are sent over the Web, sometimes by a “peer-to-peer” connection, it can be complex and costly for law enforcement agencies to listen in on them. This has previously led some countries, like Ethiopia and Oman, to block VoIP services on “security” grounds.

Now, with this new technology, suspects whom authorities wanted to monitor could be identified through their username and subscriber data, or by billing records that associate names and addresses with usernames, making not only calls but “any other data streams such as pure data and/or video or multimedia data” available for interception.

Microsoft has filed a similar patent for “legal intercept” technology designed to be used with VoIP services like Skype to “silently copy communication transmitted via the communication session.”

Meanwhile, civil liberties and privacy concerns over increasing levels of surveillance have sparked huge interest in new encrypted communications platforms, deliberately designed to shield users from potential monitoring.

Nesta página estão os filmes (DVD e Blu-ray) em promoção — não se esqueça, também, da Amazon do Reino Unido. Antes de colocar aqueles filmes e boxes (tem uns bem legais e a preços muito, mas muito mais baixos que no Brasil mesmo sem promoção), verifique se os títulos desejados possuem legenda em português. É bem simples: na página do filme, dê um Ctrl + F e procure por “subtitles”. Se tiver um “Portuguese” no meio, boa.

Se inglês não for problema para você, os livros e ebooks para Kindle são uma boa pedida. A lista que a Amazon compilou para ebooks é fraquinha, mas vários títulos fora dela, inclusive os que estão em promoção no formato tradicional (de papel), também estão com preços mais convidativos. E tem coisas bem legais, como o novo do vidente matemático Nate Silver, The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail-but Some Don’t, o comentado Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, de Susan Cain, e The Hunger Games, de Suzanne Collins, por US$ 1,95 na versão física.

Steam

Ah Steam, como você é legal. É tanta promoção, tantas vezes por ano, e com descontos tão agressivos, que já nem tenho mais pressa de aproveitá-los todos. “Ah, no Natal cai de novo”, penso ao ver um jogo barato e, um segundo depois, a lista enorme dos que ainda sequer instalei.

Como sempre rola no Steam, boa parte do catálogo está em promoção, mas além dessas existem as diárias, com descontos ainda maiores. E retornando da última mega promoção (a de verão), as promoções relâmpago com seus prazos mais curtos e variáveis, farão você voltar à loja da Valve com mais regularidade.

É tanta coisa que fica difícil recomendar algo de cara. Logo que a promoção abriu, por exemplo, tinha XCOM: Enemy Unkown, que o Pedro analisou no Kotaku, por R$ 50, e o belíssimo e introspectivo Limbo por menos de R$ 5. A essa altura essas promoções talvez já tenham virado, mas elas servem só de exemplo. Vale uma garimpada bem boa pelos corredores virtuais do Steam.

Dicas: não compre de cara jogos que não estejam na promoção do dia ou nas promoções relâmpagos, mesmo que já tenham desconto. Se, por exemplo, um título estiver com 33%, ele “corre o risco” de figurar em uma dessas vitrines com descontos ainda maiores. Espere até que isso aconteça e, se no dia 26 não tiver rolado mesmo, aí sim compre com o desconto da semana. Outra dica boa: organize os jogos que você está de olho na lista de desejos que o próprio Steam fornece. Por algum estranho motivo os links para acessá-la estão sumidos desde a entrada da promoção de Black Friday, mas a URL continua funcional: http://steamcommunity.com/id/USERNAME/wishlist (substitua USERNAME pelo seu nome de usuário).

Nuuvem

A Nuuvem é uma loja brasileira de jogos para PC distribuídos via download. Até agora, só liberaram uma promoção — Sleeping Dogs por R$ 29,99 (antes, R$ 79,90). Mas eles estão prometendo “o Maior Black Friday de games do Mundo!” O que vem por aí? Pelo jeito, só amanhã saberemos.

Atualização: as promoções na Nuuvem devem estar muito boas. Durante a maior parte do dia o site esteve offline devido ao tráfego, tanto que já foi anunciada uma extensão da Black Friday — no mínimo ela irá até amanhã à tarde.

Origin ^novo!

A Origin é a loja de jogos via download da EA. Nesta Black Friday, os jogos estão com até 50% de desconto, incluindo lançamentos recentes como Need For Speed Most Wanted e Medal of Honor Warfighter (ambos com 40% de desconto, por R$ 59,94).

Quem usava Windows nos anos 90 vai reconhecer o design deste baralho, uma réplica do clássico jogo Solitaire.exe que divertiu muita gente durante muitos anos, inclusive eu que gastei muitas horas jogando essa paciência.

O Solitaire.exe é uma réplica exata, pixel a pixel, do baralho que vinha incluído no Windows 98. O baralho foi criado por Evan Roth sob encomenda para o museu Cooper–Hewitt National Design Museum em Nova York e impressas em cartas oficiais Bicycle Playing Cards de alta qualidade.

As faces das cartas do Solitaire foram desenhadas originalmente em 1990 para o Windows 3.0 por Susan Kare, designer da Apple, e a parte de trás com a cena da praia com palmeira foi desenhada por Leslie Kooy. O jogo foi criado por Wes Cherry, um estagiário da Microsoft que nunca recebeu nada por isso.

O baralho Solitaire.exe tem edição limitada em 500 sets e custa US$20 na loja do Cooper–Hewitt Museum, onde está em lista de espera.

The famed (notorious) Kowloon Walled City (KWC) was brought up in this thread. If you don't know what KWC is, here are moe infos (mostly culled from the same thread, so credit to the posters there), but basically it looked like this:

(1) The City of Darkness

(3) Recreating Ghost in Hong Kong

(4) German Documentary from 1989

I lived in KWC when I was 2-3 years old but I have no recollection of that time. Later on, even though our family moved out of there, but since I was enrolled in the schools near there and my parent worked during the day, so my bro and me were dropped off at my relative's place in KWC everyday. I got to know the place pretty well because I spent at least 4 hrs there everyday from 1984 to 1991. So ask away!

Note: I will be back in a few hours to start answering questions, got shit to do today.

Edits:

(1) I know a lot of you want proof. I can think of two things that may prove it, my school photo from Bishop Ford's memorial school and Angel's Kindergarten which are both next to KWC and I think both still exit. I will see if i can find them and send it to the Mod when i get home.

(2) Many of you asked for pictures inside. Even though everyone has a camera now, back in the 80s it was not that common and even if our family had one, it made no sense to waste the film inside KWC from the people who lives there perspective.

(3) Bishop Ford's memorial School is on top of a hill next to KWC and it's next to a cementery. Even most Hong Kong people don't know this fact unless you are a Kowloon or Lok Fu local!!! People from Lok Fu can back me up on this. I guess this is like a semi-proof that at least I am local to that area.

(4) I need to go now but will be back and answer a few more and hopefully find my photos and send to the mod as proof. Thanks for the interest in this AMA!

Edits 2:

(1) I just sent some strong circumstantial proof to the mod because as I said I don't have direct proof.

(2) My answers are vague? Yea true, but I am recalling things that happened 20 or more years ago and I was about 8-10 years old at that time, how can I comment on the nuances of the socio-political situations there from the memories of a child?

(3) I am not familiar with every single place in KWC? This is true, now just look at the photos and tell me, would you let your 8-10 years to roam the dirty alleys inside KWC?? I mostly travelled back and forth from my relative's place and school and when my bro, cousins and me went out and played, we played OUTSIDE the fortress. Kids don't play hide and seek inside KWC.

Edits 3:

(1) The mod hasn't got back to me about the proof I sent, probably because it's thanksgiving.

(2) Lack of photos inside? I am repeating myself here, it was in the 80s, I didn't have an iphone back then, I could't just take random snap shots of the place. Do you notice that all the photos of KWC are from journalists or professional photographers and not from residents who took photos of themselves inside? It never came to mind back then that I should take a photo of myself in the dark alley under the leaking pipes with all the shits and trash on the ground.

(3) I will probably pop back in tomorrow to answer a few more questions.

Se a Academia das Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas (que distribui o Oscar para os melhores do cinema) ainda tem alguma dúvida sobre quais filmes devem entrar na lista de indicados do próximo prêmio, aqui está uma dica. Brad Pitt e Angelina Jolie, o casal mais amado (ou pelo menos o mais fotografado) de Hollywood, confessaram que recentemente choraram ao assistir ao longa O Impossível (The Impossible), de Juan Antonio Bayona.

A atriz afirmou que ela e o marido choraram durante o filme que conta com Ewan McGregor e é sobre uma família atingida pelo Tsunami da Tailândia em 2004. “Eu te conheço há anos e você é um dos meus atores favoritos e sempre gostei de assist-lo, mas eu vi o filme e eu não te reconheci”, Jolie disse para o ator escocês, segundo o USA Today. “Dizer que é um dos melhores desempenhos do ano, realmente não dá crédito suficiente, porque não parece uma performance. É tão honesto e tão profundamente emocional”, completou a atriz que organizou uma exibição especial do filme na última semana.
