Phix

by Paul Taylor

As mentioned over on Facebook, I had to go into the dentist as my TMJ had been getting bad again over the last two days, and my night guard was nearly destroyed.  I ended up having to get a replacement night guard, new alignment tray, as well as a first round of Botox shots into my jaw muscles (which have gotten so big and full of lactic acid that they make my jaw look square).  I’m a bit fried and decided that at least the world needs more Phix being awesome.  Wapsi back Monday.

The Importance of Dogs Maintaining Their Ideal Weight

by DogPerDay

When your dog puts his or her head on your lap and gives you those wide, begging eyes, it can be hard to resist sneaking them that extra serving of food.

Unfortunately, we dog owners have a tendency to do this too often, and vets estimate that up to 40% of the world’s pet dogs are overweight or obese. While many owners realize it is unhealthy for their dog to be overweight, few realize when their own dog has become obese. That is because it can sometimes be hard to notice. According to pet nutrition experts, James Wellbeloved, the difference between a dog with a healthy weight and being overweight can be just a few pounds.

With so many dogs at an unhealthy weight, it is important owners not only know how to recognize if and when their dog has become overweight, but how to help them return to and maintain a normal, healthy size.

The dangers of being overweight

Just like in humans, being overweight can lead to short and long-term health problems in dogs. Hypertension and respiratory problems create more pressure on the heart and can lead to cardiac issues, while diabetes and liver disease can also impact quality and length of life. There is also an increased risk of cancer with obesity, while some problems, like osteoarthritis, can confound the problem by restricting movement, making it harder for your dog to exercise and return to their ideal weight.

Ways to check your dog’s weight

Before you can know if your dog is at their ideal weight, you need to know what that weight should be. There are a number of online weight charts which give estimates for how much a dog should weigh as an adult according to their breed and sex. However, for a more accurate weight range for your own dog, you should speak to your vet.

The Importance of Dogs Maintaining Their Ideal Weight

Once you know how heavy your dog should be, weigh them on scales once a month to keep track. Ensure you stay up to date on your dog’s health by scheduling a full health check with your vet twice a year.

Finally, if you don’t have any scales at home to weigh your dog, you can do a basic check just by looking and feeling. Generally, you should not be able to see your dog’s spine or ribs just by looking at them, but you should be able to easily feel them below a thin layer of muscle and fat. Equally, your dog’s waist should taper inwards slightly at the hips; if it doesn’t, they might be overweight.

How to maintain your dog’s ideal weight

The best way to maintain your dog’s weight and, therefore, their good health, is to balance the right amount of exercise with a consistent and suitable diet. Most dog food that can be purchased in a supermarket is purpose-made according to the size and age of the dog for which it is intended, and comes with recommended daily servings. Following these guidelines is the best way to ensure your dog gets all the food they need without eating to excess.

Balance the diet with at least two walks a day and plenty of play. Different breeds need different amounts of exercise to burn off their energy and food, so speak with your vet about what is right for your dog.

Once your dog has reached their ideal weight, weigh them regularly and keep a diary to keep from straying outside their perfect range. We understand it can be difficult to resist feeding your dog some occasional treats, but it is what is best for your dog’s health, and if you substitute snacks for play, we guarantee your dog will still show you lots of love.

Zombie Roomie - Pumpkin Head - end

New comic!

Today's News:

There'll be an epilogue strip that puts a bow on this arc, but I wanted it to be over so we're done. It's about where it was supposed to end when it was originally written up-- just much later in real time due to the time off for commission work.

Dany, my Siamese cat, is doing a lot better than she had been. She is getting over her cold and eye infection that she had for the last couple of weeks and her poo situation is doing a better since she now gets fed separately than the other cats so she doesn't have access to canned food. She also sleeps on the bed with me and Viviane-- she hadn't done yet during the time we've been in Montreal. She's a lot closer to how she was back in the States which makes me feel good.

I'll be trying to have the epilogue up for Friday and do some Patreon work this weekend.

Grrl Power #690 – Götterdämmermcguffins

by DaveB

Grrl Power #690 – Götterdämmermcguffins

I hope that top panel is legible. I didn’t want to try and typeset all that text so I hand wrote it. While my handwriting is kind of neat… not like, 18th century calligrapher neat, granted, but usually it’s pretty legible – though some of the lettering size is a little inconsistent. I’ll make the double sized page a public post over at Patreon so if you’re having to squint a little too much, you can check it out there.

Now that I think about it, it’s a little weird that Cora is the first one to put this together. (I’m not saying she’s right, but it’s a fair guess.) Dabbler probably suspects it but never brought it up.

Keep in mind that the “Nth” as she calls them are entirely hypothetical, and even if they did exist, some of their activities could be mistaken for the Tier 3 guys. You know, the Vorlons, Reapers, even Precursors. Guys who have some amazing tech but are still banging around in spaceships. Or… are spaceships, in the case of the Reapers.

According to Dabbler, the Nth aren’t necessarily ascended, like, energy beings, but they have technology so advanced that it’s unrecognizable as technology, and according to her theory, tend to work in ways that aren’t detectable via normal examination. Like, they’ve never shown up and been all “Yo I’m basically the Beyonder and I can kill a galaxy with a wave of my hand.” Because if they had… well, then they wouldn’t be hypothetical, would they?

Anyway, Dabbler will probably talk about them at some point when Sydney gets back and asks about them.

I mean if she gets back! No, it’s totally when.

Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like.

Miss Teddy-Weddy

by David Willis

2018-12-06

Originally, the final panel of this strip had “WALKY!” being hollered, which threw me for a loop because I thought maybe it was supposed to be Joyce yelling at Walky as an illustration of their current relationship.  But it’s supposed to be Sal!  Even though I don’t think Sal calls Walky “Walky.”  This infuriated me in its ineptitude, and I had like thirty seconds to spare, and so I fixed it.  It is now more clear.

McKayla is a five month old Hound, Shepherd mix. She and her brother Cooper are new at our shelter. They are the friendliest pups, but don’t know how to walk on a leash yet. They are sweet and comfortable with the other dogs at the shelter. Submitted by Washington Wilkes Animal Shelter.
