The Ten Best Bowls of Ramen in NYC

by Sara Ventiera

Few things are more satisfying on a cold winter's day than a steaming-hot bowl of broth. Some are more exciting than others; unless you're sick at home, few of us are getting worked up over a cup...

NYC Will Soon Have a Hot Sauce Tasting Room, Hot Sauce Sommelier Included

by Devra Ferst

A new Greenpoint hot sauce shop will have a space to host tastings and pop-up dinners, plus a "somm" to guide condiment purchases.

New York has reached a new pinnacle of hipsterdom. Come April 18th, the city will have not just one but two condiment sommeliers. This all started in December when Maille announced its mustard boutique would have a mustard somm on hand to help shoppers out  Now, Greenpointers hears that a hot sauce somm will now be on staff at Heatonist, a hot sauce shop opening in Greenpoint. The job of the spicy somm is "to help people figure out what sauce is right for them," says heat addict and owner Noah Chaimberg.

Heatonist, which has already surpassed its Kickstarter goal of $18,000, will be divided into a storefront that carries 150 hot sauces and a kitchen/dining area in the back where Chaimberg hopes to host pop-ups with visiting chefs. No word on the lineup just yet, but it could be anything. Perhaps an all-wings dinner? A hot sauce-forward Mexican tasting menu by Enrique Olvera? A hot sauce pairing dinner spearheaded by the spicy somm? Only time will tell.

For those who can't get to the store, Chaimberg is planning a tailor-made subscription program online: "We're developing an app that allows customers to identify what they like based on eight parameters (salty, smokey, sweetness, heat etc.)."

Another Dozen Cheap Eats Classics in New York City

by Robert Sietsema

Eater critic Robert Sietsema brings back a Classics Week favorite, a round up of 12 of the city's long-standing cheap eats.

These are restaurants that have provided inexpensive meals day in and day out for decades, like an old friend always there when you need her but often overlooked. And for the price, the food is excellent. (Note: the restaurants are presented in alphabetical order.)

Al Salam — This combination grocery, halal butcher shop, and snack bar (seating is limited) makes the best pita sandwich in all of Bay Ridge, rolling chicken shawarma in a flatbread with dill pickle slivers and a garlic sauce so strong, it will leave your lips burning. Other culinary delights run to braised lamb shanks, rotisserie chickens, composed salads, stewed veggies, and bread dips. 7206 5th Ave, Brooklyn, (718) 921-1076.

Anatolian Gyro Now two decades old, this Turkish café was decimated by Hurricane Sandy but eventually reappeared around the corner in more comfy digs. Kebabs cooked to order over charcoal are the things to get, especially the adana made of ground lamb dotted with little bits of juicy onion. It can be incorporated into a humongous "home bread" sandwich with minted yogurt and chopped vegetables. And don’t miss the dumplings called manti. 2623 E 16th St, Brooklyn, (718) 769-4754.

B & H Dairy — One of the last vestiges of the stretch of 2nd Avenue once known as the Yiddish Broadway, B & H is an old-fashioned Jewish dairy restaurant, and there aren’t too many of them left. Since 1947 it’s been catering to dieters, vegetarians, and cheap dining enthusiasts, who fill up on a bowl of soup and buttered challah bread made right on the premises — it threatens to overshadow everything else. The blintzes ain’t bad, either. 127 2nd Ave, (212) 505-8065.

Chirping Chicken — Once these places were ubiquitous, flame-grilling chickens with a Greek flair right in the front window. Only a handful remain (this one’s in Astoria), slinging birds at rock-bottom prices that also include two selections from the steam table, a pita heated over the same flame, and, depending on the deal, a choice of sodas. Nothing could be more fundamental, meal-wise. 3015 Broadway, Queens, 718-721-7766.

Curry in a Hurry — This lively spot, at 40 years old, lays claim to being the oldest restaurant in Curry Hill and the seed from which the whole neighborhood grew. Touching all the bases, the kitchen — most of it visible — turns out southern Indian dosas, northern Indian curries, and the snacks called chaats, in addition to sweets and kulfis. The best part: the upstairs dining room with panoramic views and unlimited condiments and desserts. 119 Lexington Ave, (212) 683-0900.

Defonte’s Sandwich Shop — Ever since 1922 this Red Hook sandwich shop has been turning out their oversized and overstuffed heroes (pictured above), making it one of the best places to dine cheaply in Brooklyn. One hero feeds two (our faves: meatball parm and the Italian combo featuring pepperoni, salami, cappy ham, and provolone). You can eat standing up or carry your sandwich to nearby Coffey Park. 379 Columbia St, Brooklyn, (718) 625-8052.

Downtown Bakery — This modest place evolved out of an Italian bakery nearly 20 years ago, but now serves an all-Mex menu of cut-rate burritos, breakfast tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, hard- and soft-shell tacos, and other quick grab-and-go delights, many with a Pueblan flair. There are three tables if you want to sit down and be civilized. 69 1st Ave, (212) 254-175.

Gazala’s Place — A Hell’s Kitchen stalwart — and a great date spot because it’s BYOB — Gazala’s presents the food of the Israeli Druze, a mountain-dwelling tribal group with a maverick ancient religion. The flaky flatbreads made in the front window are a delight, and so are the hummus dishes topped with garlicky fava beans and the charcoal-grilled, ground beef kuftas. The premises is cramped but cozy. 709 9th Ave, (212) 245-0709.

Jay & Lloyd’s Kosher Deli — Since the demise of 60-year-old Adelman’s on Kings Highway, Jay & Lloyd’s has been the neighborhood’s only remaining kosher deli. Though young in deli years (founded 1993), the place has a lived-in quality, with a hot dog theme that includes hanging hot dogs, neon hot dogs, and hot dog hats for the hot dog slingers. The pastrami is exemplary, the matzo ball soup served piping hot, and kids will go for the pigs in blankets. 2718 Ave U, Brooklyn, (718) 891-5298.

Old John’s Luncheonette — One of the few Greek diners remaining in the vicinity of Lincoln Center, Old John’s Luncheonette (dig the strange name, which sounds like it came from a Brothers Grimm tale) gained momentary fame four years ago by being the place Ferran Adria chose to eat his breakfast on the way out of town. Hey, the Belgian waffle he ate was great! And the place also does a fine job of diner-style hamburgers and two-egg breakfasts. 148 W 67th St, (212) 874-2700.

Philippine Bread House — Specializing in cakes, meringues, and other pastries tinted purple with purple yam, this long-running establishment also boasts a steam table in the rear and table seating, providing full traditional Filipino meals. Expect fried milkfish, dinguan (pork simmered in pig-blood gravy), bopis (spicy beef lungs and heart), and kare kare (oxtail in peanut sauce), among other fried and stewed dishes. 530 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ, (201) 659-1753.

Sandy Restaurant — Anchor of East Harlem’s Dominican community, Sandy looks like a Greek diner but with a pan-Latin menu. Soups made with fish, beef tripe, chicken, or the pumpkin-thickened Dominican sancocho come in meal-size portions, heavily laced with cilantro and garlic, and the roast pork is some of the best in town. Also be tempted by the fried pork tidbits called cuchifritos, and the paprika-coated chickens that flip and kick in the rotisserie like Rockettes. 2261 2nd Ave, (212) 348-8654.

Hit Soba Shop Cocoron Opens Japanese Curry House Next Door on Kenmare

by Devra Ferst

Danny Bowien's already paid a visit.

Yoshihito Kira's ever-busy soba restaurant Cocoron now has a little sister next door. Goemon Curry quietly started dishing up brown Japanese curry sauce over plates of fried fish and into deep soup bowls last week. The king of East Broadway, Danny Bowien has already paid a visit:

Eater hasn't seen the full menu quite yet, but it looks like Goemon has its own cast of quirky manga characters. This turbaned bunny promises that the curry will "less risk of cancer," "boosted immune system," and perhaps best of all "IQ up?":

Hark, A Vagrant: Katherine Sui Fun Cheung

buy this print!

I read this quote, from an interview with Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, and the interviewer asked about why she was a pilot and all that, and she just said "I wanted to fly, so I did." And I thought MAN! I can't even figure out what to eat for breakfast, never mind sailing through a load of barriers just because I think I want to give something a shot. "Flying? Whatever, I'll just Do It."

Another quote? "What's the point of flying a plane if you can't have fun doing it?" I love her!

Look at her! We all want to be her.

I love early aviatrices - Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart, Beryl Markham, etc - they were like "oh is there a brand new job on the face of the earth? Think I'll invite myself to do it before anyone says I can't."

Not too much time goes by before Top Gun washes up once again on these shores.

Archie taps Obscure Video Game Licenses from Sega and Capcom for Worlds Unite

by Alex Jones

Unite01

Archie previously revealed that the Worlds Unite crossover is going to feature two huge video game characters (Mega Man and Sonic) teaming up together. The publisher confirmed several more beloved franchises from Sega and Capcom that are coming out to play in the storyline. A brand new teaser from the crossover shows some wish fulfillment that you wouldn’t believe. Everything from Golden Axe to the obscure Alex Kidd franchises are contained in the full scope of this crossover. Here’s a quick lowdown on some of the different franchises teased in the image released today from the publisher.

Let’s kick things off with Sega:

Alex Kidd

  • First Appearance: Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1986)
  • Why do we care?
  • Kidd was Sega’s answer to Mario in the late 80s, and while he hasn’t been seen in a little while, we still have a soft spot for the Kidd.

Billy Hatcher

  • First Appearance: Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (2003)
  • Why do we care?
  • Anything from Sonic Team is worth a second look.

Golden Axe

  • First Appearance: Golden Axe (1989)
  • Why do we care?
  • College.

NiGHTS

  • First Appearance: NiGHTS into Dreams… (1996)
  • Why do we care?
  • NiGHTS was one of the first games to take advantage of the video game art form featuring a heroine flying around on the Sega Saturn.

Skies of Arcadia

  • First Appearance: Skies of Arcadia (2000)
  • Why do we care?
  • The game is an early 3D RPG sporting good characters and a strong setting.

Panzer Dragoon

  • First Appearance: Panzer Dragoon (1995)
  • Why do we care?
  • Dazzling visuals and a unique approach to gameplay made this game an essential entry into the Sega Saturn library of games.

Onto the Capcom games:

Breath of Fire

  • First Appearance: Breath of Fire (1993)
  • Why do we care?
  • Breath of Fire is a Japanese title early on in the SNES library that contained an actual plot and cast of fleshed out characters.

Ghosts N’ Goblins

  • First Appearance: Ghosts N’ Goblins (1985)
  • Why do we care?
  • Ghost and Goblins was one of the first games that really challenged gamers on consoles while still being fun and intuitive to play.

Monster Hunter

  • First Appearance: Monster Hunter (2004)
  • Why do we care?
  • While the game initially may seem archaic to some American gamers, there’s something mystifying and deceptively simple about the original Monster Hunter that makes it an incredible game to play.

Street Fighter

  • First Appearance: Street Fighter (1987)
  • Why do we care?
  • Street Fighter earned it’s acclaim as a staple game among fans in the arcade fighting scene.

Okami

  • First Appearance: Okami (2006)
  • Why do we care?
  • Okami took it’s time melding Japanese folklore with a more cerebral Zelda-style game design.

Viewtiful Joe

  • First Appearance: Viewtiful Joe (2003)
  • Why do we care?
  • This is one of those major gamecube titles built around the personality of the main character that can rewind time. Viewtiful Joe was an original idea in the space of video games.

A full prologue is launching along with Free Comic Book Day on May 2nd from Archie, after that this comic is directly spinning off into an epic 12-part crossover. Thanks to Comics Alliance for the cover. The tale is broken up into a flipbook featuring separate Mega Man and Sonic versions. Ian Flynn is writing the story. The Sonic comic includes art from Adam Bryce Thomas, with the Mega Man portion complete with art contributions from Patrick Spaziante, Jonathan Hill, Powree, Ryan Jampole and Jamal Peppers.

Netflix Announces New 'Danger Mouse' and 'Inspector Gadget' Series

by Chris Sims
kate

The CG, it BURNS!

At long last, Richie Rich's reign of capitalist terror is over, at least where the options for children's shows on Netflix are concerned.

The company's slate of original programming has been growing pretty steadily in recent months, and now, less than a week after the debut of the first season of new adventures for the pint-sized oligarch, the announcement came down via Variety about what they're working on for the next year, including a new series based on Playmobil figures and, of more interest to those of us driven primarily by nostalgia, reboots of Inspector Gadget and Danger Mouse.

The most important thing Agent Carter got right

by Hannah Lodge

carter

Alas, our eight weeks of Agent Carter are up, and the short series tied up most of its ends with a neat bow. The finale was satisfying enough, though fairly unsurprising – my biggest qualm was that the suspense relied heavily on the danger facing Howard Stark (and anyone who has seen Iron Man, which is basically everyone watching, knows Howard has to make it out just fine).

What surprised me most, though, was what the series didn’t do. From episode one, a huge part of the buzz and speculation around Agent Carter focused on a single idea:

Who does Peggy Carter marry?

Part of me gets the speculation; we know Carter eventually gets married based on her brief appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But it’s also a huge disservice to the character. Post-war, Carter struggles in her professional life, seen by her peers as little more than Steve Rogers’ love interest. Carter was competent in the film and fulfilled a role beyond the archetypal love interest or damsel in distress, but she’s still Captain America’s girlfriend. And now that Cap is gone, what everyone looks for next is not what she’ll do or who she’ll fight, but who she’ll kiss.

I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it almost feels like the men in Carter’s office were a proxy for audience and media reaction.

It would have not only been an easy trap to fall in, but a common one. Women in films have it pretty rough, and it’s hard to imagine it’s much better on television. Only 12% of identifiable movie protagonists in 2014 were female, according to research from the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film. The few females that do show up in speaking roles are more likely to be identified by personal life-related roles, such as wife or mother, than males, who tend to be identified by work-related titles, such as doctor or executive.

Rather than moving Carter from Cap’s love interest to someone else’s love interest, the show runners and writers decided to let her be he an agent. Not a girlfriend. Not a wife. Sure, there were a few potential future suitors, but they were so minor, they could easily fall away and be completely removed if the series comes back for another season. In fact, the only male relationship that feels like it would require a mandatory wrap up or return in a second season is Carter’s relationship with Jarvis, which is rooted in professional respect rather than infatuation.

So basically, Agent Carter was entirely about Agent Carter. How crazy is that?

It’s not something we see in TV often, but by refusing to become a show about love triangles or Peggy Carter’s happily ever after, Agent Carter made its intentions remarkably clear.  As Carter says to Sousa at the episode’s close: “I know my value. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t matter.”

Forget cat cafes, there’s a cafe in South Korea where you can hang out with sheep!

by Joan Coello

10678789_847728885246448_7986489102588011614_n

Japan is home to hundreds of animal cafes where guests are able to hang out with catsrabbits, and even owls as they sip lattes and cups of herbal tea. These establishments give their patrons, often people who live in rented accommodation in urban areas, a chance to interact with animals that they would not be able to keep at home due to a lack of space or strict “no pets” clauses in tenancy agreements.

In Korea, however, one particular cafe has upscaled the experience with something much bigger and fluffier than the common bunny, cat or pup. Check out this unique cafe which houses a pair of beautiful, friendly sheep!

Located in the Hongdae district of Seoul, Korea, Thanks Nature Cafe is a quaint little cafe that has been attracting crowds with its unusual dwellers, a pair of white woolly sheep. The joint has been operating since 2011, but has been exceptionally busy since the beginning of this year simply because it’s the Year of the Sheep.

▼ The interior is stylish and cosy with lots of hints of nature, and scattered with sheep paintings and ornaments.

▼ Doesn’t look too different from a regular cafe, but…

▼ Tucked away in the outdoor seating section of the cafe is a little wooden pen that houses two adorable sheep!

These are real sheep! And they’re not just for show. Visitors are allowed to interact with the animals and may even feed them some hay. The owner of the cafe, Mr. Kwang Ho Lee, personally cares for the sheep, diligently keeping their little house clean, and even taking them out for walks to ensure that they are active and healthy.

▼ The sheep freely roam about the premises of the cafe when it isn’t too crowded.

▼ The owner and his woolly pals.

▼ Check out these visitor reports!

Sadly, unlike cat or rabbit cafes where their furry hosts hang around all year round, the sheep at Thanks Nature Cafe only join patrons for drinks during the cooler months of the year. Due to their thick coats and size, Mr. Lee sends them back to the sheep ranch when it gets too hot, and invites a new pair of woolies to his cafe when the weather turns cold again.

However, even without their special stars, the cafe operates normally and attracts a healthy flow of customers with their menu of delectable waffles and beverages!

If you’re interested in spending some time with the sheep, be sure to check their Facebook page before heading down to avoid disappointment!

Mini bakeable Kit Kats return — this time in cheesecake flavor! 【Taste Test】

by Kay

P1130172

Some of our readers are undoubtedly aware that we here at RocketNews24 are quite fond of Kit Kats. And while we’re used to seeing the popular chocolate snack in an array of interesting flavors, we have to say we were genuinely intrigued when we heard about “bakeable” Kit Kats last year, as were many other Kit Kat fans across Japan, judging from the fact that the unique sweet attracted enough attention to be turned into pizzas.  Now, the bakeabke Kit Kats have returned, and in a new flavor to boot! Of course, we weren’t about to be kept away from such sweetness.  Join us as we try the new “Bake ‘N Tasty Mini Kit Kats Cheesecake Flavor” (Kit Kat Mini Yaite Oishi Cheesecake Aji)!

When we heard that a new version of the bakeable Kit Kats had come out this week, we naturally rushed to the local supermarket in search of the snack.

▼ Sure enough, we found the new Kit Kats being sold for 256 yen (US$2.15) for a bag containing 13 mini pieces.

P1130158

▼ Okay, we’re ready to bake and feast!

P1130171

▼ Last year’s bakeable Kit Kats were in a custard pudding flavor, and this time, as it says on the package, it’s cheesecake!  The illustration of the toaster oven also makes it clear that these Kit Kats are meant to be baked.

P1130173

▼ Toasting the Kit Kats should turn them golden brown like this:

P1130174

▼ On the back of the package, there were instructions on how to bake the Kit Kats.

P1130175

▼ You place the Kit Kats on the toaster tray after covering it with aluminum foil …

P1130178

▼ … and turn the toaster on to heat for two to two and a half minutes. Once the surface starts to turn brown, the Kit Kats apparently can get burned quite quickly, so you’ll need to be careful not to heat it for too long.

P1130181

▼ We opened the bag …

P1130186

▼ … and the mini Kit Kats came individually wrapped in cute green and white checkered packages.

P1130187

▼ Let’s toast four Kit Kats, shall we?

P1130189

▼ The Kit Kat looks like just regular white chocolate before it’s toasted.

P1130195-2

▼ Okay, we have the four Kit Kats in place in the toaster.

P1130200

▼ Are you guys prepared to take some heat?

P1130203

▼ We turned on the heat and waited …

P1130217

▼ … and they were done in just minutes!

P1130225

▼See how lovely and brown the Kit Kats looked toasted!

P1130226

▼ Beautiful! Now we were ready to taste them.

P1130228

▼ The golden-brown baked Kit Kats in closer detail, before we wolfed them down.

P1130229

So, now that the Kit Kats were toasted, how did they taste? They had a delightful texture, crispy and light, and although we maybe could taste the chocolate more than the cream cheese, the flavor was definitely enjoyable. And the sweet smell of warm toasted chocolate and cheese was indeed wonderful enough to make our mouth water even before tasting the actual treat.

Nestle Japan had actually previously sold a baked type cream cheese Kit Kat from the Kit Kat Chocolatory shop, which we tasted last year along with the pudding flavored bakeable Kit Kats. Having tried both, we thought that last year’s Chocolatory cream cheese Kit Kats had more of a cheese flavor, while these new cheesecake flavor bakeable Kit Kats seemed to be sweeter, and perhaps closer to how you might expect a typical “chocolate” snack to taste.

That doesn’t change the fact that we think the new Kit Kats still make a highly tasty treat. Plus, their small size makes them very convenient to eat as a quick snack. There’s apparently also a smaller package containing just three of the mini Kit Kats available exclusively at convenience stores, so if you’re in Japan this spring, you may very well come across this newest offering from Nestle Japan, in which case we wish you sweet and happy toasting!

KFC’s Latest Novelty Food Is Edible Coffee Cups Made of Cookies

by Clint Rainey

Surely one of many who cannot wait to eat their cups.

For its latest food-that-probably-shouldn't-actually-exist, KFC has gone beyond Double Downs and instead created edible coffee cups. (The gimmick is timed to the launch of Seattle's Best at all of KFC's U.K. stores.) So, what's the deal with this thing? The so-named "Scoffee Cup" is actually a cup-shaped cookie that's coated in white chocolate and sugar. Once your friendly KFC employee pours coffee in, the "cup" "slowly" softens as you sip — but hopefully not so much that you end up spilling now-sugary coffee all over yourself.

While the Double Down appeals to humanity's most primal, protein-craving instincts, this thing feels yanked from the head of Willy Wonka (or, ahem, Dominique Ansel, who introduced his own cookie cups like a year ago), but these things again go next-level because they are reportedly scented. "We've infused different cups with a variety of ambient aromas including Coconut Sun Cream, Freshly Cut Grass, and Wild Flowers," according to a rep for the food-scientist collective that created the cups for KFC. The smells "have a natural ability to evoke the positive memories we associate with warm weather, sunshine and summer holidays. Things that make everyone smile."

But don't go booking your plane tickets to London just yet to try one of these things. Metro, which broke the news, intimates they could be in U.K. stores by the summer. The delay is probably a good thing, because once this Pandora's box opens, who even knows what fresh-grass-and-chicken-scented horrors will follow.

This stop motion of painting truly is Lego art

by Michael Schulte

Here is a great post from over on Sploid of an extremely clever stop motion video of what looks like painting with Lego bricks. It's really amazing how when dipping into the palette the bricks change as if to show the thinning of the paint as it is applied to the brush. I really enjoy this.

Just like the cherry blossoms, KFC potato chips return to Japan this spring!

by Casey Baseel

KC 1

Last year, something beautiful came to Japan. It was only here for a short while, but in that time, it left a deep impression on many people, including us here at RocketNews24. And while we were sad to see it go, it’s time to dry our tears, because this spring, it’s coming back again!

So, all excited for cherry blossom season? That’s great, but what we’re actually talking about right here are Kentucky Fried Chicken-flavor potato chips.

Once again, Japanese snack company Calbee is teaming up with the world’s most famous fast food fried chicken outfit. Whereas last year’s version was billed as “Colonel’s Crispy-flavor,” this new batch of fried chicken-inspired fried potato slices emulates the taste of KFC Japan’s honenashi Kentucky paripari umashio, or Boneless Kentucky Crunchy Delicious Salt flavor.

We’re a little puzzled by the “Boneless” part of the product name, since we don’t recall any bone-like flavors in the KFC chips we tried last year. In more specific terms, Calbee says the chips draw out the natural deliciousness of chicken with a simple mixture of salt and pepper, so you can be assured that they make use of at least those two of Colonel Sanders’ 11 herbs and spices.

In a rarity for Japanese snack foods, Calbee is leaving pricing up to individual retailers. The larger, 83-gram bags are available exclusively at Japanese convenience stores starting March 2. A smaller 58-gram bag will go on sale March 16, and both packages will include a coupon for a discount on an order of Boneless Kentucky Crunchy Delicious Salt chicken at KFC locations in Japan, in case munching on the chips has you craving the real deal.

In another similarity to the cherry blossoms, though, the new KFC chips will be gone come mid-April, so if you’re planning to pair them with some Kentucky bourbon, you might want to check now to make sure you have ice in the freezer.
