HuffPost Live – Sexual Fluidity and the Lesbian Community

by Erika Moen

Sexual Fluidity and the Lesbian Community

Here is the video of my conversation yesterday with Nancy Redd at HuffPost Live yesterday in which we talked about sexual fluidity and the myth of the Lesbian Until Graduation. I was joined by Brooke Sopelsa, Marcie Bianco, Myisha Cherry and
Lisa Diamond.

I wish I’d had time to include a few more statements, so I’ll just add them here.

People who want to police and act as gatekeepers to any identity (sexual or otherwise) are useless and ineffective. As Marcie brought up in the discussion, an argument used against homosexual marriage is that same-gender couples marrying somehow diminishes (“waters down”, if you will) the marriages of oppositely-gendered couples. Obviously that is a bullshit concept. So why are homosexuals so quick to adopt it when it comes to sexual identity? “If THOSE people identify as my sexuality, it damages the legitimacy of MY identity!” No. No, it really does not.

My identity as a woman is not damaged even though there are some truly terrible women out there. My identity as a cartoonist is not damaged even though there are some truly terrible cartoonists out there. An individual’s identity is their own, regardless if other people you don’t like identify as the same thing as you.

Homosexual identity has ALWAYS been under attack and disrespected as valid, long before there was a stereotype of college girls “experimenting” and the introduction of the word “bicurious”. If you removed from the world every person who’s ever experimented or “gone through a phase”, THERE WOULD STILL BE PEOPLE ATTACKING AND INVALIDATING HOMOSEXUAL IDENTITY. Don’t blame those that “experiment” or are attracted to multiple genders for other people’s homophobia. Blame the homophobes.

Biphobia is not how you combat homophobia, but it does make those that are biphobic act just as bullying and reprehensible as homophobes.

Other people do not get to define your sexual identity. There is no such thing as a REAL [sexual ID] and a FAKE [sexual ID].

Your sexual identity HAS NO IMPACT on somebody else’s sexual identity. NONE AT ALL. There is no “watering down” of identity.

There is no test, no threshold, no status quo you have to meet to identify as your sexuality. You are the ONE PERSON who knows truly and can accurately name your sexual identity.

Nobody else.

Minnesota Zoo Welcomes First Baby Tapir Born in Twenty Years

by Andrew Bleiman

Tapir HERO

The Minnesota Zoo announced the birth of this Malayan Tapir calf, the first born at the Zoo in more than 20 years. The newborn, a female, came into the world at approximately 9:15 p.m. on July 20, after a 419-day gestation period. Mom, Bertie, and her calf are doing well and are currently off-exhibit together, giving them time to bond. But you can watch them on the zoo's Tapir Cam.

The Malayan Tapir is one of the most endangered animals in Southeast Asia. Tapir populations are declining due to habitat loss from deforestation for agricultural purposes, flooding caused by dam building for hydroelectric projects, and illegal trade.

The Malayan Tapir's gestation period varies from 390-410 days. Mothers give birth to a single calf (twins are rare). At birth, a calf weighs approximately 10-20 pounds (4.5-9.0 kg). A female normally births a calf every 2-4 years. For the first 6-8 months of their lives, Tapir calves resemble furry watermelons with legs. They are dark brown to black in color, with alternating bands of yellowish-white stripes and spots. Young Tapirs grow quickly and can weigh as much as 450 pounds (204 kg) at one year of age and reach adult size in about 2-3 years.

“This birth is a great way to celebrate National Zookeeper Week and the dedication the staff have for these animals,” says Tom Ness, Tropics Trail supervisor. “Malayan Tapirs are an Endangered species and every birth is important to the population.”

In human care, the Malayan Tapir is managed for breeding purposes by a Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which, through the coordinated efforts of several zoos throughout the United States, helps maintain the captive gene pool for the future aid of the wild population. The Minnesota Zoo currently participates in 60 SSP programs, including the Malayan Tapir SSP. The Zoo had 4 prior Malayan Tapir births, the last one occurring in 1991.

Naturally-Conceived Tiger Cubs Thrive at Sedgwick County Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman
Tiger 1

Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas celebrated the birth of two Amur Tiger cubs on July 6! The cubs are believed to be a male and female, and so far are healthy and thriving. The cubs opened their eyes for the first time at 10 days old. According to their checkup at 15 days old, the cubs are growing in leaps and bounds. The female cub weighed three pounds at birth and had more than doubled her weight, weighing in at seven pounds. The male cub was slightly smaller, born at just under three pounds and weighing about six pounds at 15 days.

The birth of the two cubs is especially uplifting news for the zoo. Last year, two female Amur Tigers at Sedgwick County Zoo were artificially inseminated. One cub was born, but sadly did not survive. This year's cubs were conceived naturally by mother Talali, eight years old, and father Ivan, four years old.

The cubs will remain off exhibit for privacy and bonding time while mom them. They may be on display later this fall, but that has yet to be determined. Visitors to the zoo can see the Tigers on a live-feed on display in the Slawson Family Tiger Trek building.

Amur Tigers, also known as Siberian Tigers, are a subspecies found primarily in Russia. They are listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. According to the IUCN, the number of Amur Tigers in the wild dipped to as low as 20 to 30 individuals in the 1930s, due to excessive hunting. Although numbers are still precariously low, with estimates currently under 400 wild individuals, the extent of their recovery is extraordinary. After such a dramatic reduction, the species still faces the challenge of a limited gene pool; in other words, the degree of inbreeding is high. Breeding of captive Amur Tigers in zoos can help to support wild populations by producing healthy Tigers with a good mix of genes.

We don’t really want to hear new music

by Neil Schoenherr-WUSTL

WASHINGTON U. – ST. LOUIS / U. TEXAS – AUSTIN (US) — Even though people say they prefer to listen to unfamiliar music, new research suggests novelty is overplayed.

With services like Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, and YouTube, we are constantly bombarded with a seemingly limitless amount of new music in our daily lives. But why do we keep coming back to that one song or album we couldn’t get enough of in college?

Why don’t more boys get the HPV vaccine?

by Michael Kennedy-Toronto

U. TORONTO (CAN) — To protect both men and women from HPV, more young boys need to get the vaccination, according to new research.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been linked to anal, penile, and certain types of throat cancers in men. Since the virus is also responsible for various cancers in women, vaccinating boys will play a crucial role in reducing cancer rates across the sexes.

Peanuts: From regular snack to social outcast

by Michael Hotchkiss-Princeton

PRINCETON (US) — New research on the public response to peanut allergies looks at how a rare, life-threatening condition can prompt far-reaching societal change.

Before 1980, peanut allergies were rarely mentioned in medical literature or the media, but starting around 1990, medical journals began discussing the seriousness of peanut allergies. And the 21st century described peanut allergies—in both medical journals and the mainstream media—as an epidemic.

Climate model predicts wheat and rice yields

by Sarah Reed-Leeds

U. LEEDS (UK) — A new climate model may help estimate the success—or failure—of some crops months in advance.

In about one-third of global cropland, temperature and soil moisture have a strong relationship to the yield of wheat and rice at harvest, new research shows. And, for those two key crops, the model could predict crop failures three months in advance for about 20 percent of global cropland.

“The impact of climate extremes—the kind of events that have a large impact on global production—is more predictable than smaller variations in climate, but even variations of 5 percent in yield were correctly simulated in the study for many parts of the globe,” says Professor Andy Challinor from the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, who co-authored the new research paper published in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The secret to how plants set branch angles

by Chris Bunting-U. Leeds

U. LEEDS (UK) — Scientists say they’ve figured out how plants set and maintain the angle of their lateral branches relative to gravity.

The mechanism, which has puzzled researchers, is fundamental to understanding the shape of the plants around us: explaining how, for instance, a young Lombardy poplar sends its branches up close to the vertical while an oak sapling’s spread is much flatter.
