Women want fertility info before cancer therapy

U. SHEFFIELD (UK) — A majority of young female cancer patients are unhappy with the way their doctors discuss available fertility options before chemotherapy or radiotherapy, new research reports.
For the study, published in Pediatric Blood and Cancer, researchers surveyed 290 young cancer patients attending support group conferences organized by the Teenager Cancer Trust in 2004 and 2011.
Fruit could taste better with far-red light

U. FLORIDA (US) — Light may one day be used to improve the flavor and nutritional content of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even the scent of flowers.
Scientists have known for hundreds of years that plants respond to light in a variety of ways. But the results of a new study show how specific light wavelengths can manipulate volatile compounds that control aroma and taste in several high-value crops, including petunias, tomatoes, strawberries, and blueberries.
For the study, published online this month in the journal Postharvest Biology and Technology, researchers exposed petunia cuttings to narrow bandwidth LED light in varying wavelengths.

PENN STATE (US) — New research suggests intervention strategies that can cultivate healthy and supportive sibling relationships.

‘Heater’ bees key to crafting honeycomb cells

CARDIFF U. (UK) — Simple mechanics and the hard work of specialist bees that shape semi-molten wax account for the hexagonal shape of honeycomb cells.
The honeybee comb is a widely studied natural cellular structure. The rounded hexagonal shape of its cells has intrigued natural scientists and philosophers for millennia.
‘Pretty’ beaches leave tiny critters homeless

UC SANTA BARBARA (US) — Beach grooming and rising sea levels are putting two types of small beach creatures at risk of localized extinction in southern California.
As indicator species for beach biodiversity at large, the disappearance of the sand-loving isopods suggests a looming threat to similar sand-dwelling animals across the state and around the world.
Dublin Zoo Celebrates the Birth of Two White Crowned Mangabeys
There's a lot of excitement at the Dublin Zoo's primate department. Two White Crowned Mangabeys were born just two weeks apart, one male and one female. On April 5, expectant mother Malull gave birth to the male who the keepers named Jomoro, after the western region of Ghana, home to a majority of the world’s population of this rare species. Ten days later mother Mangabey Monifa gave birth to the female who the keepers named Awiane, the capital of the Jomoro district. The half brother and sister were both sired by the dominant male Danzo.
White Crowned Mangabeys are Endangered in the wild and their numbers are rapidly declining. Dublin Zoo is one of twelve zoos in Europe participating in a breeding program and has a very successful breeding record.
Helen Clarke-Bennet, team leader of the African Plains says, “We’re delighted with the arrival of two Mangabeys which brings the Dublin Zoo troop of these elegant monkeys up to eight. Jomoro and Awiane are thriving and get on very well as brother and sister. It’s a joy to watch them being playful together.
The new arrivals can be seen out and about with their family in the African Plains today.

How to better predict college success
Leahgatesso, kids who got more pre-college prep and know more stuff coming in do better in college? shocking

RICE / GEORGIA TECH (US) — Advanced Placement exam scores and certain personality traits, along with standard admission practices, could improve predictions about who’ll finish college.
Phillip Ackerman, a professor of psychology at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the study’s lead author, says that the research team hopes university admissions officers consider taking into account what applicants “know,” in addition to their grades and standardized test scores.
When is a wrinkle not a fold not a crease?
LeahgatesI think you are mistaken here as those are clearly cnurdles

BROWN (US) — Engineers have mapped out the origins of wrinkles, creases, and folds, which could be significant for flexible electronics, dermatology, and sheets that become sticky when stretched.
“When a rubbery material is compressed and reaches a critical load, it experiences instability and forms surface patterns like wrinkles, creases, or folds,” says Mazen Diab, a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Engineering at Brown University and the paper’s first author. “We’re studying how each of those states forms.”

12 year old boy Ali Ahmed on the Muslim Brotherhood’s fascist theocracy and feminism
LeahgatesDO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN KIDS AND TEENAGERS ARE FUCKING AMAZING
My faith in large parts of humanity has been shaken this week. This kid is giving me some hope for the future, though. Watch how Ali Ahmed explains to news outlet El Wady what a fascist theocracy is and then preaches the importance of feminism to a new Egypt. I love when the interviewer asks, “Who taught you all this?” and the Ahmed’s all, “I just know it. I listen to people a lot, and I use my own brain.” And of course he’s read the Constitution.
Kids today.
