So many people always seem to forget just how intelligent elephants are.

the elephant drew the other elephant.

THE ELEPHANT ACTUALLY DREW THE OTHER MOTHERFREAKIN ELEPHANT

MY HEART, YOU MONSTER

omg

My mother was a zookeeper a long time ago, and she used to look after the elephants. She says that when she was pregnant with me, there was one elephant, Winky, who would pat her tummy and make happy noises. I was fucking blessed by an elephant.

IT WAVED GOODBYE WITH IT’S TRUNK AGOIDLKNGOAHIEJDLBNKJAEHODKLNZBNZHIJOAE

THE FLAPPY EARS, TOO, HNNNNNNNNNNNGH.

Elephants are amazing. They definitely have been shown to be able to  draw/paint and I’m not at all surprised they can figure out technology like this. They are also known to be altruistic and empathetic towards other elephants and animals in general (hence the elephant being happy about a pregnant woman).

Kolmården Wildlife Park Welcomes Red Panda Cub

by Andrew Bleiman

The Kolmården Wildlife Park in Sweden welcomed a Red Panda cub on June 10. The female cub, named Pralin, is doing well.

Bild (4)

Despite the name, Red Pandas are more closely related to Raccoons than to Giant Pandas. However, they share many traits with their black and white namesakes. For example, both eat bamboo and have a sesamoid bone, known as a 'fake thumb', used to grasp bamboo. They both live in the temperate bamboo forests of China. Unlike Giant Pandas, Red Pandas also inhabit the foothills of the Himalayas. Red Pandas are currently listed as Vulnerable, due to habitat loss.

It's a Boy! Baby Hippo Born at Zoo Ostrava

by Andrew Bleiman

Hippo hero

This healthy baby Hippo was born at the Czech Republic's Ostrava Zoo on June 3. The first weeks of a little Hippo's life is mostly spent in the water but then it takes its first trips on the shore. This is mostly done with mom to look for food, but it is also a chance to explore its surroundings. During one of these kinds of on-land trips, zoo staff had a chance to determine the baby's sex -- and it's a boy! Since then, he has gotten stronger and much heavier.

His mother, 36-year-old Katka, is quite experienced, having already raised 10 babies. His father is Honza, a 46-year-old who is the oldest hippo father in Europe! In total, Ostrava Zoo has reared 18 Hippo offspring throughout its history -- this newest baby boy is the nineteenth.

Wii-style therapy for kids with autism

by Ken Branson-Rutgers

RUTGERS / INDIANA U. (US) — Researchers are testing a type of screen-based therapy that encourages autonomy in children with autism.

The digital set-up works much like a Wii, triggering the onscreen media of children’s choice whenever their arm passes a certain point in space.

55 ways to make clinical drug trials more ethical

by Chris Chipello-McGill

MCGILL (CAN) — A new set of recommendations could make preclinical studies of potential new drugs more effective, say researchers.

Currently, only 11 percent of drugs that enter clinical trials in humans are ultimately found safe and effective enough to receive regulatory approval.

Exposed early, tadpoles tolerate insecticides

by B. Rose Huber-Pittsburgh

U. PITTSBURGH (US) — Amphibians exposed to insecticides early in life—even those not yet hatched—have a higher tolerance to those same insecticides years later.

Wood frog populations residing farther from agricultural fields are not very tolerant to a particular type of insecticide, but they can become more tolerant with early exposure, new research shows.

Convert microscope into billion-pixel imager for $200

by Kimm Fesenmaier-Caltech

CALTECH (US) — Engineers have devised a way to convert a conventional microscope into a billion-pixel imaging system for about $200.

“In my view, what we’ve come up with is very exciting because it changes the way we tackle high-performance microscopy,” says Changhuei Yang, professor of electrical engineering, bioengineering and medical engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Loyal employees often make more money

by Andy Henion-Michigan State

MICHIGAN STATE (US) — A loyal workforce can boost a firm’s bottom line. Now a new study finds employees who are loyal also stand to benefit—by making more money.

Michigan State University researchers surveyed 10,800 employees in former socialist countries that introduced capitalist economies in the 1990s.

One-third of abortion patients travel more than 25 miles to get the procedure

by Maya

That’s according to a new Guttmacher Institute analysis.

The survey, of data from 2008, found that 67 percent of abortion patients traveled less than 25 miles, 16 percent traveled 25–49 miles, 11 percent traveled 50–100 miles and 6 percent traveled more than 100 miles. The average distance traveled was 30 miles. Unsurprisingly, those seeking second-trimester abortions–which are offered by  two-thirds of U.S. abortion providers–often ended up going farther.

To an urbanite like me, those seem like ridiculously long distances to travel. But, as Guttmacher explains, folks who live in rural areas often have to travel greater distances for many services–not just abortion. That’s why efforts to expand telemedicine health care–including abortion services–could be a real game-changer for rural dwellers–particularly low-income folks who don’t have access to a car. And that’s likely why anti-choicers have been so quick to launch a coordinated attack on the new technology.

But it’s not just the geography of abortion access that leads to long travel times. The survey found that people who lived in a state with a 24-hour waiting period were more than twice as likely to travel greater distances as those in states with no waiting period requirement. And this survey doesn’t even include folks who weren’t able to get an abortion at all due to these barriers. In short, anti-choice laws do what they’re intended to do: make it more difficult for people to get the reproductive health care they need.

The Anatomy Of Smoosh

by Brinke

Sometimes a puppeh has so many folds, crevices and smooshes ya need a roadmap. One map, coming up! From Cuteporter Julia G.: “I think it’s really important for Cute Overload readers to know that no two smooshy faces are alike. Your dog’s smoosh may not be as complex as my dog’s smoosh or it may be even more complex.”

9358571979_7d1a36b87b_b

“It may have ear smoosh or lip smoosh but no neck smoosh. Or it may have oodles of neck smoosh with just a little bit of nose smoosh. A “smoosh” (lowercase) is known as the head/maw/neck of wrinkly faced breeds!”

by Andrew Bleiman

The cubs – two females and one male – made their public debut on July 15. More than 15,000 people voted on the zoo’s website to name the cubs! The females are named Aruna and Nela, while the male is named Otto III, after his two older male siblings.

Zoo Magdeburg partners with the Snow Leopard Trust to protect wild Snow Leopards in northern India’s Spiti Valley. Snow Leopards are Endangered in their native Asian mountain habitat. Fewer than 7,500 of these rare and elusive cats are estimated to live in the wild, where they face intense pressure from illegal hunting and habitat loss.

Teenage girls are bad-ass

by areshoekiddingme

If you agree and are interested in helping teenage girls hone their bad-ass skills, here are some projects you might like to support:

Black Girls CODE: “Through community outreach programs such as workshops and after school programs, we introduce underprivileged girls to basic programming skills in languages like Scratch and Ruby on Rails. Introducing young black girls to these skills gives them an introduction to today’s computer technology, an essential tool for surviving in the 21st century. The skills they acquire through the programs give these young women a chance at well-paying professions with prestigious companies, as well as the ability to enter into the field as an entrepreneurs and leaders of technology."  Yeah, and to innovate awesome technology that makes the world better and more interesting for everyone.  Bad-ass.

Girls Rock Camps: Girls Rock! DC just ended their annual summer camp with a showcase of 11 bands and 3 crews, all made up of young women who came together at the beginning of camp, formed groups, learned to play and compose music, and wrote songs together.  And that, my friends, is pretty bad-ass.  Click the link to learn more, donate to the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, or use their resources to find (or start!) a camp in your area that you can support by donation or by volunteering your time as an organizer, counselor, instructor, or concert attendee.

Girls for a Change: “GFC provides the tools, resources, partnerships and support girls need to gain the voice, ability, and problem-solving capacity to realize their full potential. We welcome and serve all girls and focus our efforts on girls who live in low income communities. Today, in cities across the country, Girl Action Teams of approximately 10 girls and two volunteer women Coaches meet to identify an issue or problem that they want to impact. The Coaches then teach the girls essential project planning and execution skills to aid them in designing and implementing their social change project.  Every year thousands of girls learn how to tackle community problems such as gang violence, low self-esteem, and environmental degradation. Imagine the possibilities if every year thousands of middle school and high school girls learn how to tackle community problems. Picture the huge number of powerful women leaders driving local communities and the world toward success and well-being." Yeah, imagine that.  Go on their website to donate, volunteer, or find a local action team to support.

PROJECT GIRL: “PROJECT GIRL is a ground-breaking girl-led, arts-based initiative created to enable girls to become better informed critical consumers of mass media advertising and entertainment. In other words, to become more media literate. PROJECT GIRL’s unique approach uses art as the means to educate, inspire, and create social change. . The Project Girl gives girls the structure to be the producers of their own culture, not just passive receivers of a culture that is trying to sell them something." Support PROJECT GIRL’s media literacy and media production workshops, trainings to help girls become peer educators, shows of art made by girls, and online education resources by donating on their website, or use their curricular resources to host your own event.

Add more orgs in reblog, girls and young women are incredible

thefluffingtonpost: Local Cat Is Angry About Something Friends...

by areshoekiddingme

thefluffingtonpost:

Local Cat Is Angry About Something

Friends are perplexed by what has a local cat named Swizzle in such a tizzy. The cat has reportedly been in a foul mood since Tuesday, but won’t let on why.

"Who knows what’s bothering him," said Tucker Trahn, a close friend. “He came home from work in a total funk and was slamming doors all over the house. He won’t say anything about it, but he’s been angry for days now."

According to Trahn the bad mood is unusual for Swizzle, who generally keeps his emotions close to the vest.

"I’m not surprised he won’t tell anyone what’s bothering him," he said. “But I am shocked it has gone on this long. Something must really be chewing at him."
