Baby Chameleon Doesn't Know That He's Already Hatched from His Egg

by John Farrier

(Photo: Canvas Chameleons/Nick Henn)

Nick Henn is the owner of Canvas Chameleons, a chameleon supply company in Reading, Pennsylvania. He recently had a baby panther chameleon hatch out of its egg. The baby was struggling, so Henn cut at its eggshell with little scissors. He found inside the shell this adorable dime-sized ball of chameleon. National Geographic describes the process:

Under Henn's close watch, the panther chameleon eggs grow in their leathery shells for seven to eight months. When the big day arrives, the chameleon uses a special "egg tooth" on its upper jaw to slit the egg's inner membrane, which then contracts.

It's "like a swimmer peeling off a wet bathing suit," says Robin Andrews, a biologist at Virginia Tech.

Biodegradable Bowls Made From Food Waste

by Nanette Wong

Biodegradable Bowls Made From Food Waste

The FOODSCAPES project tackles the problem of food waste in a completely different way. Rather than expending efforts to decrease food waste, they are utilizing food waste to be a functional piece of tableware.

FOODSCAPE_arachide04

FOODSCAPES is created by WHOMADE.IT and Michela Milani. It uses edible leftover materials and reconstructs a seed-shaped bowl that can hold dry foods. It is free of any additives, preservatives, colorants, thickeners, correctors, and artificial agents. Once you’re done with it, it can be dissolved in water and act as soil fertilizer.

These Are Some Mighty Tasty Looking Minerals!

by Zeon Santos

Rockhound is an affectionate term for people who collect minerals, and rockhounds enjoy sniffing out and digging up new stones while they’re out exploring the natural world.

Mineral collectors are always looking for new pieces to add to their collection, and when they make a discovery they like to brag about the tasty new treat they discovered during a dig.

But even the most mineral hungry rockhounds should refrain from trying to chew on these delicious looking plates of simulated food spotted by Rock Feast at the 2015 San Diego County Fair.

These replica food products are made out of 100 percent mineral, and they're so lifelike they look tasty even when you're close enough to see what's cooking.

Photographer Expertly Captures a Concerned Wedding Party Picture Even as He Slips and Falls

by Lori Dorn

Photographer Slip and Fall Photo

Wedding photographer Chase Richards of followell fotography demonstrated his absolute professionalism when he refused to let go of his camera, even as he slipped and fell into a puddle during the rainy wedding day of Will and Kristina Moore at McClain Lodge in Jackson, Mississippi. The resulting photo is a true testament to the concern that the wedding party had for their photographer.

…at their wedding I slipped in a puddle while shooting the wedding party, cut my finger open, and broke one of my lenses. Evidence of this can been seen on my Instagram. But! Here I am alive and well and able to bring you photos that document how great this day really was. It started off a little rainy, but everything ended up working out perfectly in the end. Kristina & Will are some of the nicest and kindest people I’ve ever met both with wonderful families. Thanks for letting me be a part of this guys, and next time we meet, I’ll make sure to have a life insurance policy!

Stray Kitten Befriends Famous Wildlife Photographer By Using Irresistible Cat Tricks

by Dainius

This adorable orange kitten tried to interrupt Japanese photographer and filmmaker Mitsuaki Iwago’s filming session. Iwago was shooting a special about cats of the world for television company NHK on Okinawa island when this little feline wandered away from his mother. Soon, the tiny stray had made itself comfortable on the long-time filmmaker and cat-lover. In a talk at the Kawasaki City Museum, Iwago explained how he finds his subjects:

“Listen closely, watch closely and take a deep sniff. This will help you develop a ‘cat’s sense’. If you are using your full five senses as you walk around, the instant you turn into an alley you will either smell a cat or know where to look and find one. In doing this, you’re not really using your human eyes – you’re employing your ‘cat’s eyes’. Essentially, because humans are also natural living things, we have the ability to smell and read the air.”

DELICIOUS DESSERT RECIPES FOR THE 4TH OF JULY!

by Cassandra LaValle

We may not have our 4th of July plans solidified yet, but I know one thing that will be happening this weekend – dessert. And, let’s be honest, it’s hard to stray from anything red white and blue when celebrating your nation’s birthday, so on top of being thankful for our freedoms, let’s be thankful that these colors also lend themselves so well to some indulgent sweets!

4th-of-july-dessert-roundup-coco-kelley

1 // You’ll spend a little time making the shortbread spoons, but the rest of the recipe is a super simple combo of vanilla ice cream, raspberry sorbet and blueberries to top!

2 // Because who doesn’t like an excuse to bake an ombre cake? Or perhaps a rainbow version is even more appropriate this year…

3 // A gluten-free granola crust and frozen yoghurt makes this dessertweeeee bit more on the healthy side. I love the berry topping that gives it that pinwheel pattern.

4 // This is one of my favorites for the simple fact that I love panna cotta, and I LOVE the idea of sprinkling edible stars on pretty much everything. This version happens to be a boozy dessert, but you can easily substitute to make it for all ages.

5 // These cookies are made from vanilla cake batter – add some red and blue sprinkles and you’ve got some seriously festive, messy, delicious ice cream sandwiches on your hands.

6 // What’s better than s’mores? A s’mores cobbler of course. Adding strawberries (or any berries really) to the mix makes this a delicious communal dessert – no fire required.

Pick a favorite, any favorite. The panna cotta and s’mores are calling my name…

Dunkin’ Donuts Working On Ditching Styrofoam Cups Nationwide By 2016

by Mary Beth Quirk
Bridget

I am surprised there is not biodegradable Styrofoam by now!

Soon these cups will belong to the non-recyclable past. (m01229)

Soon these cups will belong to the non-recyclable past. (m01229)

While Dunkin’ Donuts previously announced it would comply with a new law in New York City banning styrofoam cups and containers, which goes into effect today, the company might bring its new plastic, recyclable cups to the rest of its locations across the country as well.

Replacing the familiar styrofoam (actually expanded polystyrene, for you sticklers) cups in NYC wasn’t easy for the company, the Huffington Post reports, going through tests of double-layered paper cups and others in an attempt to find something cheap and disposable.

The company finally settled on beverage containers made from polypropylene, a type of plastic that’s recyclable, unlike styrofoam. Those cups might be the future for Dunkin’ Donuts stores across the country, as a company rep told HuffPo that they’re being tested in select locations in Massachusetts, Vermont and California right now.

Dunkin’ is also eyeing other alternatives with the goal of phasing out styrofoam completely in 2016. That would save the country’s landfills a lot of waste, as HuffPo notes that the company sells 30 cups of coffee every second.

The Dunkin’ rep says that the company will settle on a replacement for styrofoam by the end of 2015, and in the meantime, Dunkin’ will “continue to evaluate and test all available cups until we believe we have found the best solution based on cost, performance, commercial viability and environmental impacts.”

Street Artist’s “Experiment” With The Authorities Ends Hilariously After 1 Year

by Dainius

Graffiti artist Mobstr tagged the same London wall over one year in a curious experiment. He began on July 17th, 2014, and made his final contribution just a few months ago. Mobstr, who has undertaken similar projects before, explains how this cat-and-mouse game began:

“I cycled past this wall on the way to work for years,” he writes on his website. “I noticed that graffiti painted within the red area was ‘buffed’ with red paint. However, graffiti outside of the red area would be removed via pressure washing. This prompted the start of an experiment. Unlike other works, I was very uncertain as to what results it would yield. Below is what transpired over the course of a year.”

A Fallout 4 character is now in Fallout Shelter

by Chris Carter
Bridget

Available... if you pay dollars.

In an interesting turn of events, Bethesda seemingly thought it would use Fallout Shelter to promote the upcoming Fallout 4, but the former has already done very well for itself. Either way though you're getting a hefty amount of cross-promotion, as Preston Garvey of the Commonwealth Minutemen, an upcoming Fallout 4 character, is making his way into Shelter.

As of today you'll be able to find him in lunchboxes, which can either be purchased for real money or earned in-game. It's a small little thing but I like the idea.

Court Tosses Truck Owner’s Parking Citation Because Of A Missing Comma

by Mary Beth Quirk

It pays to read everything carefully — or rather, you might not have to pay a fine if you’re as sharp-eyed as one Ohio woman. She ended up having a parking citation tossed by an appeals court, all because she noticed there was a comma missing in the local law.

As anyone who has ever written a sentence knows, punctuation is of the utmost importance. And in one Ohio village, English teachers are likely sighing and shaking their heads at a grammar mishap involving the local law on parking regulations.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the 12th District Court of Appeals overturned a parking violation [PDF] for a woman living in West Jefferson. She’d been convicted in municipal court for leaving her pickup parked on a village street for more than 24 hours.

But she pointed out that the municipal ordinance prohibited “any motor vehicle camper, trailer, farm implement and/or non-motorized vehicle” from daylong parking.

Her truck, she said, is not a motor vehicle camper. It is a motor vehicle, which would’ve been covered if the law had a comma where it should’ve.

The village argued that it was just a typo and therefore didn’t invalidate her violation. The trial court upheld that view, saying that when reading the ordinance in context, it unambiguously applied to motor vehicles and “anybody reading [the ordinance] would understand that it is just missing a comma.”

Grammar won the day, however, after the court sided with the truck owner.

“If the village desires a different reading, it should amend the ordinance and insert a comma,” Judge Robert A. Hendrickson wrote.

Oh, snap.

Brothers Jeff and Ron have been exchanging the same birthday card for over 40 years. Posted to Reddit by user venusreincarnate, the two have been sending this “Peanuts” card, featuring the character Linus, back and forth since 1973.

“This Is The Age Of Ecology” says front of the card, and inside, “Don’t throw this card away, recycle it to a friend.” While there are a few gaps, about 84 cards were saved by using and reusing this one.

Spilled Food Turned Into Beautiful Art By Giulia Bernardelli

by Dainius

Giulia Bernardelli takes spilt coffee and turns it into art. The 27-year-old Italian artist received a bachelor’s degree from the Academic of Fine Arts of Bologna, and presently works with children at a museum. Bernardelli’s work is always spontaneous.

“I decided to replace the brush by what nature has to offer, such as leaves, fruit peels, or just the food” she told the Huffington Post. “I never plan my work in advance…For example, when I drink coffee, I reflect on the nuances that I could create if I turned it over on the table.”

Sound Transit selects Pride flag as Capitol Hill Station icon

by jseattle

CapitolHillStationSign

20150630_SignageThough it will be rendered only in blue and white, Sound Transit has selected a symbol of Gay Pride as the legally required identification icon for Broadways opening-soon Capitol Hill Station.

“Pictograms, as part of our overall general signage program, are not produced in color,” colorful Sound Transit spokesperson Bruce Gray regretfully informed CHS.

The new symbol was spotted by eagle-eyed @gordonwerner in Sound Transit’s latest project update newsletter. Sound Transit also announced that the Seattle-side line of light rail will be known as the Red Line while Eastside extensions will be known as the Blue Line.

The Pride-based icon was selected as part of a design and community feedback process designed to “create pictograms to identify Sound Transit Link light rail stations” that “serve as a tool to easily differentiate stations.” “This is important for non-English speaking audiences, particularly those that do not use a Roman alphabet,” a report on the process reads.

It’s choice comes in a summer of revival for the rainbow flag on Capitol Hill. While the flag continues as a ubiquitous symbol around the neighborhood every June for Pride, the addition of 11 rainbow crosswalks in Pike/Pine has represented a small restoration, for some, of the neighborhood’s eroding LGBTQ identity. For others, it’s a groovy photo op. You might expect a similar response for the Capitol Hill Station icon — though we wouldn’t mind holding the license for the branded blue Pride flag merchandise.

In spring 2014, Sound Transit ran a survey to determine what community attributes a Capitol Hill Station icon should include. Here is how the responses shook out (PDF — contains word clouds!)

Apparently our majestic, soaring crow suggestion was ignored.crow_picto-400x372

Pictograms for the light rail system are also required by state law. According to the agency, light rail station pictograms must meet these criteria:

• Simple in form, and are an easily recognizable symbol
• Readable at many scales; including signage, print material, online and mobile devices
• Are individually distinguishable and read as a family
• Meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Additionally, “the pictogram may reflect the nature of the environment: neighborhoods, landmarks, geographic locations and may include points of interest around the stations.

Capitol Hill Station and the 3.1-mile twin tunnels connecting UW Station to downtown via Broadway is slated to begin service by early 2016. CHS showed you inside the under-construction station here in May. Last week, Sound Transit announced the first phase of testing the new tracks was successfully completed, opening the way for final testing this fall as light rail trains will empty of passengers downtown before making the 8-minute run to UW to put the tunnels and new systems through their paces. Meanwhile, above ground, the project to develop the property around Capitol Hill Station as a mix of affordable and market-rate apartments, commercial space including a new grocery store, and community space including a farmers market-friendly plaza has begun.

1Password Partners With Musician Jonathan Mann to Write a Song About the Importance of a Strong Master Password

by Lori Dorn

AgileBits, the maker of 1Password and other computer security products, recently partnered with singer/songwriter Jonathan Mann of the Song-a-Day project, to produce “How To Choose A Password“, a catchy tune about the importance of a strong master password.

One of our goals with 1Password is to make security convenient. We’ve thought long and hard about how to make the process of choosing this important password simpler and more friendly for our new users. Could we make the password creation process fun, and maybe even danceable? Why not? We called on our friend, Jonathan Mann, to help us teach everyone how to create a strong Master Password. It turns out, his method involves a lot less reading.

I worked with the fine folks at @1Password to help you come up with a super secure Master Password! Check it out: https://t.co/4QNr08fx3r

Dept. Of Labor Proposal Would Expand Overtime Pay To Nearly Five Million More Americans

by Ashlee Kieler
Bridget

I had no idea this restriction existed. I guess I am lucky to get overtime at all...

Working more than 40 hours a week but not getting paid overtime because you make too much already? If so, you might soon be pocketing more dough for your extra hours under newly proposed federal regulations that raise the threshold income level at which workers are exempt from overtime pay of time-and-a-half wages.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the proposed Department of Labor rule would be the first change to the salary threshold governing overtime pay in more than a decade and could affect the pay of nearly five million Americans starting in 2016.

The proposed regulations would more than double the current salary threshold at which employers can avoid paying overtime from $23,660 a year to $50,400 per year. Likewise, the regulation increases the pay of hourly workers exempt from overtime pay from $455 per week to $970 per week.

This means that if an hourly or salaried worker makes less than $970 per week or $50,400 per year, they would now have the right to receive additional pay if they work more than 40 hours per week.

“We’ve got to keep making sure hard work is rewarded. Right now, too many Americans are working long days for less pay than they deserve,” President Barack Obama said in an op-ed piece announcing the proposed changes published on the Huffington Post late Monday.

Like the current rules, it is possible that some companies could skirt the new requirements. Currently some employers get away with dodging the extra pay by making an employee who’s paid more than $455 per week or $23,660 a year a “manager” with limited supervisory duties.

The potential rule change comes as a result of the Department of Labor’s review into overtime pay initiated last year.

The most recent change to the salary cap came in 2004. Obama contends that the current level has been diminished by inflation and is too low.

“In this country, a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. That’s at the heart of what it means to be middle class in America,” Obama wrote.

While the potential for overtime pay will likely be welcomed by employees, some industries believe the changes will hurt businesses and consumers.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) said in a statement that the proposal would dramatically increase operational costs for retailers and diminish the flexibility and benefits currently provided to full-time employees that have advanced into management.

“Retailers will have two options if this rule is implemented: raise prices in order to absorb a dramatic increase in labor costs, or take away the benefits, such as flexibility and leadership opportunities, that come when an associate works their way into management,” Kelly Kolb, RILA vice present of government relations, said in a statement. “Neither of these are outcomes that will raise standards of living for our employees or our customers.”

The proposed rules must go through a public comment period before they take effect, which likely won’t happen for several months.

Dino Pet: A Living Bioluminescent Pet

by Miss Cellania

A new toy/pet/science experiment from Vat19 is like sea monkeys on steroids. Dino Pet is a plastic shell shaped like a dinosaur, but it’s actually an aquarium for plankton. The living plankton are called dinoflagellates, which is the bioluminescent species that makes some beaches glow at night.

(YouTube link)

According to FAQ on the sales page, dinoflagellates can live one to three months on sunshine alone, or several month with food. After that, you can order more. And if you decide to buy a Dino Pet, prepare yourself for questions from your children about the ethics of keeping living beings in a small aquarium, even if they are plankton. -via Laughing Squid

Groups like the Boy and Girl Scouts teach young recruits how to build a campfire out of gathered wood and kindling, but the basic Tipi style they teach you doesn't last as long as the Star, and isn't as effective for cooking as the Platform.

So if you’re planning on heading to the great outdoors this summer you should check out this article that teaches you How To Build The Only Five Campfires You’ll Ever Need, and make sure you invest in a Zippo lighter (or some waterproof matches) before you go!

Brookfield Zoo Shares Photos of Newest Okapi

1_11114233_10153371367119170_310214917703873541_o

Brookfield Zoo, in Chicago, Illinois, is excited to share photos of ‘Will’, a male Okapi born at the zoo on April 21. Born to first-time mom, ‘Augusta K.’, Will is currently behind the scenes, but he can be seen via a live video feed that is set up in the zoo’s “Habitat Africa! The Forest”.

During Will’s first few months of life, he will spend the majority of his time in an indoor nesting area. In the wild, a mother Okapi leaves her calf at a protected nesting site, to keep it hidden from predators. She returns only to allow the calf to nurse. Once Will is more active, at about 3 months old, guests will be able to see him exploring his outdoor habitat with Augusta.

Brookfield Zoo was the site of the first Okapi birth in North America in 1959 and has had 27 successful births, including this newest addition.

The Okapi, also known as the “forest giraffe”, is a rare hoofed mammal, native to the dense Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. American and European scientists did not discover the species until the early 1900s. Because of the Okapi’s elusiveness, little has been known about their behavior in the wild, including how they raise their calves. The Chicago Zoological Society, which operates the Brookfield Zoo, has been a leader in gathering information on mother-calf relationships and calf development. This information has been instrumental in developing husbandry methods to help Okapi mothers raise their calves successfully.

Population numbers of Okapi, in the wild, have been declining and are predicted to continue on this downward trend due to habitat loss, human settlement, mining, war and political instability in these animals’ region, and the bushmeat trade. A global initiative formed in 2013 is helping to attract and strengthen international support for the species, and its closest relative: the giraffe, by providing an official forum to support the implementation of much-needed conservation strategies.

Bridget

I really like the public bikes, but I want to look up all the others.

Public Mixte Bikes

• From $549 - On Sale Now
Public

Yes, it's that time again. Time for my annual City Bike Roundup. Last year's is right here - Best City Bikes & Easy Rides 2014 - and it's got tons of comments still on it with lots of additional recommendations (there's also our list from 2011 as well). There's a lot of agreement about the bikes, so always check out the comments to see what really fits you.

One of the perennial favorite brands is Public and the sweetheart choice seems to be the new Mixte French Style in orange (see above). Currently on sale in May (so only a few more days), it features "a premium French-style step-through design and a wide range of seven speeds to satisfy the most discerning city riders." Tons more choices below!

Radically Diverse Australian Fungi Photographed by Steve Axford

pretty deadly things

mush-1

Photographer Steve Axford (previously) continues his quest to document some of the world’s most obscure fungi found in locations around Australia. Axford lives and works in the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales in Australia where he often has to travel no further than his own back yard to make some of the discoveries you see here. The forms of fungi, slime molds, and lichens he prefers to document seem to have no limit in their diverse characteristics. Axford explained when we first featured his work last year that he suspects many of the tropical species he stumbles onto are often completely undocumented. You can follow more of Axford’s discoveries on Flickr and SmugMug.

Japanese Farmer Finds an Enormous, Mutated Strawberry That Is Now Officially the Heaviest Ever Found

by Rebecca Escamilla
Bridget

How did they organize the strawberry ceremony before it went bad??

A farmer in Fukuoka, Japan found an enormous (by berry standards) strawberry that tipped the scale at a whopping 250 grams—that’s a little over half a pound for metric system haters. The mutated beast of a berry now holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest strawberry in the world.

Limited Edition Jurassic World Barbasol Shaving Cream

Bridget

ok sure

jurassic-park-shaving-cream.jpg Remember in the original Jurassic Park when Dennis Nedry used a specially modified Barbasol shaving cream can in an attempt to smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park? I thought that was a pretty week plot point because not a single person who takes a look at that slovenly sack of shit Nedry would think he's the shaving type. If he didn't have a beard it was because he couldn't grow one. Anyways, now Barbasol (along with Mercedes, Samsung and Dairy Queen just to name a few others) has teamed with Jurassic World to bring us LIMITED EDITION SHAVING CREAM CANS. I never thought there would be a day when I wanted to collect shaving cream cans, yet here we are. I guess there really is a first time for everything. I'm going to buy a whole case of them and carefully pack them away in the garage for ten years when I'll finally open the box to find a bunch of rusty, leaky shaving cream cans and throw them all away. What an investment! Keep going for a commercial.
