change the name of the WASHINGTON REDSKINS to the WASHINGTON SKIN FLUTES, which is a much less offensive team name. | We the People: Your Voice in Our Government

by hodad

change the name of the WASHINGTON REDSKINS to the WASHINGTON SKIN FLUTES, which is a much less offensive team name.

Given that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently cancelled the Washington Redskins' trademark, because it is disparaging to Native Americans, we believe that the WASHINGTON SKIN FLUTES is a much less offensive name. We therefore urge the Obama administration to make the executive decision to change the team's name to this much more family-friendly name.

Someone Wrongly Thinks Jay Leno is Funny

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

From Variety:

Comedian Jay Leno has been tapped by the Kennedy Center to receive this year’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

“Like Mark Twain, Jay Leno has offered us a lifetime’s worth of humorous commentary on American daily life,” said Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein. “For both men, no one was too high or too low to escape their wit, and we are all the better for it.”

Previous recipients of the kudo include Richard Pryor, Jonathan Winters, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin, Neil Simon, Billy Crystal, George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell and Ellen DeGeneres and last year’s honoree, Carol Burnett.

Let's vote on that.

Cory Doctorow's Coming to Washington County Libraries

by Alison Hallett

Earlier this month, Cory Doctorow's book Little Brother was pulled from a school-wide summer reading program at Booker T Washington High in Pensacola, Florida—for "questioning authority" and "lauding 'hacker culture,'" according to Doctorow. In response, the novelist and Boing Boing editor arranged for 200 copies of the book to be sent to students.

That sort of story is like catnip to librarians and booksellers, so I have to imagine Washington County librarians are pretty excited right now: Next month, Doctorow is headlining Washington County's Adult Summer Reading program ("recommended for adults and teens"). He'll be discussing technology and politics at three area libraries:

• Beaverton City Library, July 8th at 7:00 pm
• Tigard Public Library, July 9th at 7:00 pm
• Hillsboro Public Library, July 10th at 7:00 pm

Sounds like a trip to the suburbs is in order! I don't think I've ever been to the Hillsboro library, but both the Beaverton and the new (to me) Tigard libraries are terrific. Go Beaverton if you're hungry for Korean food, Tigard if you feel like doing some thrifting.

Tom on CloudKit

Moves like Azure:

In contrast CloudKit is not actually a sync mechanism. Instead it’s a transfer mechanism, where your app must explicitly initiate all data transfers.…

This all means that using CloudKit in an app will more closely resemble third party cloud solutions like Azure or Parse.

As a result, using CloudKit will likely mean more code in your app than using iCloud with Core Data. On the other hand, CloudKit’s more direct and less magical approach to dealing with cloud-based data should be more reliable.

50 Drinks in SF to Try Before you Die: 2014 Edition

by Camper English

In the new July/August issue of 7x7 Magazine, I have list called The Big Drink: 50 Cocktails to Try Before You Die.

Big Drink 7x7

You may remember that I created this list for the same magazine two years ago. When I went to update it, I kept just 9 cocktails from the previous list, though I did repeat many of the same cocktail bars.

But palates change over time, and I chose many new cocktails at old spots reflecting newly-popular spirits like mezcal, and added a few more fun drinks like the Latch-Key Tea at Butter and a Gin and Tonic at Empress of China, which is more about the view than the drink itself.

Photo (1)I also looked further afield and included more outer-neighborhood bars like Holy Water in Bernal, the Outerlands in the Sunset, and the Third Rail in Dogpatch, reflecting the demographic changes of the city.

The list online is in slideshow format, which is a bit annoying to click 50 times. But you can find it in the print magazine and they have created a special app that's far easier to read - it has both list and map formats. (Search the iTunes store for "The Big Drink".)

I hope y'all enjoy it, and have a good time exploring the list. It was a lot of thirsty work on my end.

Woman Sells Deployed Boyfriend's Dog, New Owners Refuse Dog's Return

by gguillotte
A soldier left his three-year-old Shiba Inu with his girlfriend when he was deployed in March. His girlfriend (for some reason or another) sold the dog on Craigslist. Now the dog has been found, but the new owners say that they won't return him because their kids are "too attached." Everything is awful. The dog's rightful owner, Robby is still in Afghanistan where he is not only serving the country but worrying about whether he'll see his dog again, especially considering that the family that now has Baxter refuses to return him to his rightful owner.

Newswire: The BBC is bringing back Danger Mouse

by Sean O'Neal

'he’ll also have certain 21st-century updates. These include a technologically enhanced “iPatch” in place of his signature eye patch'

go fuck yourself

Determined not to let America win the transatlantic remake race, the BBC—which recently relaunched Teletubbies, only to be answered by a revived Powerpuff Girls—has announced that it is also bringing back Danger Mouse. The network has ordered an unspecified number of new episodes of the series about a dashing, daredevil rodent secret agent and his adventures against the same 10 or so backdrops, usually in the very easy-to-draw North Pole.

However, this time, as with the newly CGIed Teletubbies, things will look a little different than they did during the show’s 1981 to 1992 run. While Danger Mouse and his trusty, mostly useless assistant Penfold will return—albeit played by new voice actors—alongside familiar enemies such as Count Duckula, he’ll also have certain 21st-century updates. These include a technologically enhanced “iPatch” in place of his signature eye patch, some “state-of-the-art wizardry” in his headquarters, and ...

The gentlemen who brought you the video of dogs being shown magic tricks (dogs have no time for them tricks, yo) have come up with a brilliant and new way to freak dogs out in a humane way: By barking at them. You'd think dogs wouldn't care, but these dogs freak the fuck out and it's hilarious.

What To Do When Your Rapist Is A Varsity Athlete

Instead of pissing off an entire fraternity, a woman who goes public after being assaulted by a star athlete risks pissing off an entire alumni network. An entire team. An entire campus. An entire nation of fans. A lifetime of tarnished Google results, an indelible bruise on their reputations. It's just not worth it, they say.

Hacker infects Synology storage devices, makes off with $620,000 in Dogecoin

by Dan Goodin
One of the affected Synology devices.
Synology

A hacker generated digital coins worth more than $620,000 by hijacking a popular type of Internet-connected storage device from Synology, security researchers said.

The incident, which was documented in a research report published Tuesday by Dell SecureWorks, is only the latest hack to steal other people's computing resources to perform the computationally intense process of digital currency mining. The cryptographic operations behind the process often draw large amounts of power and produce lots of heat. People looking to acquire a large war chest of digital coins typically must pour large amounts of money and effort into the endeavor. One way malicious actors get by this requirement is by compromising large numbers of devices operated by other people. The devices then perform the work at the expense of the unsuspecting end users and pass on the proceeds to the attacker.

According to researchers from SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit, the attackers exploited four separate vulnerabilities contained in the software of Synology network-attached storage boxes. The vulnerabilities were documented in September and fixed in February by Synology. By then, large numbers of people began complaining their Synology devices were running sluggishly and extremely hot. It turns out that at least some of them were running software that mined large sums of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

Yahoo's Diversity Record Is Almost As Bad As Google's

35% female and 1% Black

theodp (442580) writes Comparing Yahoo's diversity numbers to Google's, writes Valleywag's Nitasha Tiku, is "like comparing rotten apples to rotten oranges." Two weeks after Google disclosed it wasn't "where we want to be" with its 17% female and 1% Black U.S. tech workforce, Yahoo revealed its diversity numbers aren't that much better than Google's, with a U.S. tech workforce that's 35% female and 1% Black. The charts released by Yahoo indicate women fare worse in its global tech workforce, only 15% of which is female. So, with Google and Yahoo having checked in, isn't it about time for U.S. workforce expert Mark Zuckerberg and company to stop taking the Fifth and ante up numbers to show students what kind of opportunities Facebook offers?

AT&T sends letter to victims of phone unlocking data breach

by Sean Gallagher
firehose

all carriers suck forever

AT&T has begun mailing out letters to customers affected by a data breach that allowed employees of a “service provider” to access customer account information, including customers’ dates of birth and Social Security numbers. The data was exposed in April through a system used to obtain unlocking codes for used AT&T phones for resale, according to the letter, which has been posted by California’s Office of the Attorney General.

“We recently determined that employees of one of our service providers violated our strict privacy and security guidelines by accessing your account without authorization between April 9 and 21, 2014, and while doing so would have been able to view your social security number and possibly your date of birth…," notes the letter. "Additionally, while in your account, these individuals would also have been able to view your Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI).”

CPNI data includes the information usually visible on a phone bill—including call activity metadata.
