*Kickstarter* Beasts of Burden: A Card Game about Managing Encumbrance

by monsterdude

You know what the best part of blundering through an absurdist dungeon is?
Collecting treasure? NOPE.
Killing monsters? AW HELLLLLLLLL NAW
Completing quests? SCRUBSVILLE USA, BRAH

The ultimate fun in any tabletop gaming experience is MANAGING ENCUMBRANCE.

Which is why I made a card game about juggling weapons, treasures, tools and sacks of kittens. I mean, you get to collect treasure, kill monsters, solve puzzles, avoid traps and complete quests, too, but you can only do those things with the appropriate equipment. And all that equipment is HEAVY. Since you can only carry ten units of weight, you have to be judicious and crafty as the game progresses.

I can write a bunch of words about how great the game is, but instead I'll just say $20, 2-6 players, 30 minutes, lots of backstabbing, awesome art from Nikki Burch and then leave you with pictures.

Harmonix opens up its office to indie studio Proletariat

by Samit Sarkar

Harmonix is now sharing its office space in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with another tenant: the local indie studio Proletariat, Harmonix announced today.

Proletariat has 12 employees, according to its website, and they moved in over the weekend. The company's previous office was also located in Cambridge. Harmonix publicist Nick Chester clarified in a blog post that there's no ownership or development relationship between the two studios; they're just sharing an office, not working on any games together.

The team at Proletariat is currently working on its first game, World Zombination (image above), a strategy title that is in development on Android, iOS, Mac and Windows PC. The studio expects to release the game this year.

Proletariat was founded by five former members of Zynga Boston in October 2012, shortly after Zynga shut down that studio. Along with Zynga, Proletariat's team includes individuals who previously worked at companies such as Electronic Arts, Harmonix, Insomniac Games and Turbine.

Dale Jr. bought an old NES game off eBay, it arrived in a comically large box

by James Dator

Today we found out Dale Jr. likes to go old school for his video gaming.

Ebay packaging is always solid comedy. #DoubleDribble #NES pic.twitter.com/CmY4RvdEsO

— Dale Earnhardt Jr. (@DaleJr) June 23, 2014

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is just like the rest of us. He puts his pants on one leg at a time, drives himself to work and likes to unwind by playing video games. That said, this Tweet raises a lot of questions on our end.

  1. What thought process preceded Dale Jr. searching eBay for a copy of the 1987 NES classic Double Dribble?
  2. Is this how the eBay seller always ships his/her products, or was the overly-careful packaging a product of seeing "Dale Earnhardt Jr." on the shipping label?
  3. Did the seller believe they were shipping to Little E, or think it was a fake name?
  4. Not so much a question, but Dale should have really held out for this triple-pack of Double Dribble, Football, and Jack Nicklaus Golf that's selling for $9.99.
  5. The "always solid comedy" line has us believing that eBay purchases are a common thing for Dale Jr. We really need to know what else he's bought. Do we think he's re-selling items on the side?

NASCAR, NES cart, NASCAR, NES cart, NASCAR, NES cart.

Newswire: Prince announces another new album, featuring a song inspired by a meme

by David Anthony

His Purpleness, the ever-eccentric Prince, is not known for working on any timeline other than his own. In this past year he’s been stepping out a bit more, turning up for a cameo on New Girl, taking over Arsenio Hall’s recently canceled late night show, and cracking jokes at the French Open, all as anticipation builds around his forthcoming album, Plectrum Electrum. Recently a writer for the Minnesota Star Tribune was welcomed into Prince’s famed Paisley Park, where, after a bit of waiting, a smattering of new material was played. And it turns out some of that material is being prepped for a new solo album—not the long-hyped work with his backing band, 3rdEyeGirl.

Proving that Prince is always watching, much like those shifty-eyed paintings in Scooby-Doo, one of the songs for the upcoming solo album is titled “This Could Be Us,” a track he claims ...

Google is quietly testing a service for registering website domains

by Chris Welch
firehose

great

Google has quietly launched its own internet domain registration service. And like many Google projects, Google Domains is starting off in beta; you'll need an invite to get in and purchase your own URL. But the company's latest effort could present GoDaddy — the world's leading domain registrar — with some fresh competition. With Google Domains, you can set up a custom domain of your choosing, but Google won't actually be hosting your website. It's only handling the domain registration aspect; for everything else, the company has partnered with Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, and Shopify — businesses that specialize in helping consumers build complete websites in mere minutes.

Pick your URL with Google

But Google seems to think it can do the domain registration part better than the competition. First, it's promising not to charge users anything extra to conceal personal information (e.g. name and address) that must be provided when registering a URL. Google Domains users can create up to 100 email aliases using their domain, and Mountain View also says it's making domain forwarding super easy in case there's already a Tumblr or existing site you'd like your new URL to point to. And you shouldn't run into any problems or downtime (at least on Google's end). Google Domains use the same DNS servers as Google's other websites, ensuring "your domain will connect quickly and reliably to your website."

Build your actual website with Squarespace

Lastly, there's the benefit of real customer support. Google says phone and email support will be available Monday through Friday from 9AM to 9PM EST. Google Domains will help you set up a new URL, but it's also accepting domain transfers from other registrars if you're lucky enough to get an invite. The first invites are going out to select businesses now, and there's no target date for when the service will go public. Google is only saying, "Our goal is to make Google Domains more widely available soon." For now, it wants all the feedback it can get from early users.

Known best for its attention-grabbing, provocative Super Bowl commercials, GoDaddy dominates the domain registration and web hosting industry. Smaller rivals like Hover have tried to stand out by providing stellar customer service and focusing on ease of use, but GoDaddy still plows along and holds a massive market share in the US. And that's after it came under fire for initially supporting SOPA and some lackluster security measures. To be fair, GoDaddy is starting to grow up, with a leadership team intent on shedding its old, sleazy image in favor of something more mature and universally appealing. Adding some serious competition to the mix may benefit everyone involved.

TriMet's two-week electric bus test

firehose

"The bus will pick up riders on various unannounced routes, adding trips between regular week day service, beginning Monday and running through the first week of July. The goal is to simulate actual operating conditions – including stopping, starting, light and heavy loads."

"The buses run entirely off of an electric powertrain, with no transmission or internal-combustion engine. That means there's no engine noise to warn pedestrians that a huge people mover is coming their way. So, TriMet is exploring ways add artificial noise if they go through with the e-bus purchases."

Tutorial on Using Craft Foam and Plasti Dip to Make Props

by Amy Ratcliffe

plugsuit backpack

We’ve discussed the value of craft foam before. It’s easy to obtain and inexpensive. DeviantArt user RuffleButtCosplay has combined that material with Plasti Dip to make small props, and she’s created a tutorial showing how she used the items to make a plugsuit backpack. She started by making a paper pattern and cut it out four times with the foam – each piece was a little smaller than the last so it would stack up nicely. She secured them together with contact cement. After it completely dried, she sanded the edges to make them smooth. She added wood filler to the edges to fill in the cracks, waited until it dried, and smoothed it by sanding. Then, she sprayed it with three layers of Plasti Dip to get a nice and shiny finished product – it was inexpensive to make and it looks great.

Coming soon Webcam Cover-Ups – pack of 10

by adafruit

Coming soon Webcam Cover-Ups – pack of 10. Look, we’re not saying anyone’s watching you. We’re not saying that some secret organization has taken over your webcam and is recording you, right now, as you read this sentence.

And we’re definitely not saying the government’s watching you. We’re not saying that the FBI or the NSA took over your laptop’s camera and are making sure you’re not using your Onion Pi too much.

That would be crazy – like thinking that Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing, or that there’s a a secretive elite called the New World Order that controls all nation-states, or that the last few US presidents have really been related to Reptilians
– an ancient race of aliens that control the entire planet, right?

But let’s just say, hypothetically, that it wasn’t crazy and that someone did want to take over your webcam and watch your every move. And let’s just say you didn’t want them to – because you were building an open source cell phone jammer, or an Arduino anarchy inciter, or you can only do one pull-up and just ate a whole bag of Bugles.

Then maybe spending a couple bucks on a set of ten, high gloss webcam blocking stickers wouldn’t seem so ridiculous. They’re pitch black, like an eye-hole-free balaclava for your computer’s built-in webcam, and have an inset, light black logo to rep your privacy concerns.

Again, we’re not saying anyone’s watching you. All we’re saying is that they might be – and isn’t that good enough?

Sign up now, these will be in stock in a few days!

You Can Now Borrow an Aerial Drone From a Library in South Florida - #ReadingRaindrone

by Victoria McNally

gaze upon your future, librarians, and despair

Some universities have awesome “makerspaces” where patrons have access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and other emerging technology. Others have books that are bound in human skin. Thankfully, the University of South Florida’s library is closer to the former than the latter, in that they now offer aerial drone check-outs. Though, you never know: after the drones gain sentience and enslave all of humanity just like we’ve always feared they might, the USF library could one day have both!

There are also some stipulations, of course—you have to have a faculty member present to supervise you during your flight, and you must enroll in a training course first beforehand. Given our own experience in drone piloting here at this office, that sounds perfectly reasonable. You can learn more about the program by watching the above ABC Action News video or by checking out the USF website.

The Bursting Social Media Advertising Bubble

by samzenpus
schwit1 writes One of the great "paradigms" of the New Normal tech bubble that supposedly differentiated it from dot com bubble 1.0 was that this time it was different, at least when it came to advertising revenues. The mantra went that unlike traditional web-based banner advertising which has been in secular decline over the past decade, social media ad spending — which the bulk of new tech company stalwarts swear is the source of virtually unlimited upside growth — was far more engaging, and generated far greater returns and better results for those spending billions in ad bucks on the new "social-networked" generation. Sadly, this time was not different after all, and this "paradigm" has also turned out to be one big pipe dream. According to the WSJ, citing Gallup, "62% of the more than 18,000 U.S. consumers it polled said social media had no influence on their buying decisions. Another 30% said it had some influence. U.S. companies spent $5.1 billion on social-media advertising in 2013, but Gallup says "consumers are highly adept at tuning out brand-related Facebook and Twitter content."

Jindal Says 'Rebellion Brewing' Against Washington

firehose

great

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Saturday night accused President Barack Obama and other Democrats of waging wars against religious liberty and education and said that a rebellion is brewing in the U.S. with people ready for "a hostile takeover" of the nation's capital.

Jindal spoke at the annual conference hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a group led by longtime Christian activist Ralph Reed. Organizers said more than 1,000 evangelical leaders attended the three-day gathering. Republican officials across the political spectrum concede that evangelical voters continue to play a critical role in GOP politics.

"I can sense right now a rebellion brewing amongst these United States," Jindal said, "where people are ready for a hostile takeover of Washington, D.C., to preserve the American Dream for our children and grandchildren."

Paul Stanford's Embattled Legal Pot Campaign Calls it Quits

by Dirk VanderHart
firehose

oh well
fuck their clipboarders tho, the worst clipboarders since the gay marriage one

the only thing better than progress is getting clipboarders off the fucking street

The pot-legalization campaign that's faced down employee strikes and elections complaints from rivals has hung up its clipboards.

As first reported by Willamette Week, Paul Stanford, chief petitioner for the Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH), announced on Friday the campaign had ceased collecting signatures for Initiative Petitions 21 and 22. The initiatives would have changed state law and the Oregon constitution to allow for legal recreational use of marijuana, but the campaign couldn't convince enough voters to sign on.

Campaign officials haven't responded to requests for comment.

As we reported in this week's paper, CRRH was beset by challenges in recent weeks—all of them at the hands of legal pot supporters. Proponents of this year's other pot legalization campaign, the moneyed and establishment-backed New Approach Oregon, filed two elections complaints against CRRH in May. And the campaign's canvassers went on strike last week, complaining of late paychecks.

A rift between the CRRH and New Approach has been apparent, with Stanford pointing out he was involved in New Approach's effort early on before he says the campaign jettisoned him. In announcing the suspension of the CRRH complaints on his talk show Friday, Stanford pointed out that New Approach's Initiative Petition 53 is still in play, but stopped short of recommending it to his viewers.

"I was involved in the earlier parts of drafting it, not in the final stages," Stanford said. "I like ours better, but the big multi-millionaire funders out there didn't. They backed I-53 and it remains to see whether anything will be on the ballot. But time will tell."

New Approach's measure looks likely to make the ballot. The campaign last week crowed that it's collected more than 100,000 signatures. It will likely need more before the July 3 filing deadline if it hopes to turn in 87,213 valid signatures, since a sizable portion are typically tossed out in the vetting process.

Nonetheless, the campaign has guaranteed it will go before voters this fall. And recent polling suggests IP53 has a decent chance of passing, especially if those big multimillionaire funders Stanford alluded to keep giving generously.

The last time Oregon voted on the issue was 2012, when Stanford's Measure 80 garnered 47 percent of the vote without substantial funding.

Brazil’s massive drought will reach your local Starbucks tomorrow morning

by Max Nisen
Drought in Brazil, consequences everywhere.

Green coffee prices have risen rapidly this year, affecting a number of retail brands. US consumers are going to feel it a lot more acutely once Starbucks raises its prices tomorrow. While price rises have already kicked in for other companies, it’s mostly been store products rather than the daily cup of coffee. Starbucks serves many thousands of people on a daily basis, so tomorrow will be the first time many are directly affected by the shortage.

The cafe price increase is relatively minor, about 10 to 15 cents for medium and large brewed coffees, and as much as 15 to 20 cents for lattes and mochas in some places, according to Bloomberg. Beans and ground coffee will go up by a more substantial 8% on average, or about a dollar on a bag of coffee. While the increase in Starbucks cafes starts tomorrow, prices of bagged coffee sold in other stores will rise July 21st.

So why the price hike? Starbucks said that “many different factors,” including labor and rental, determine its prices, but this is likely the inevitable result of a massive increase in the price of Arabica coffee, due mainly to a drought in Brazil. Starbucks at first wanted to wait things out, but prices have stayed so high for the past six months that it it’s had to pass some of the cost on to consumers.

Prices are still high, but have moderated at least a bit after other big exporters like Guatemala increased output:

There’s one piece of good news for consumers, given the fact that it’s finally full summer: Starbucks won’t be increasing the price of its cold frappuccinos.

See how borders change on Google Maps depending on where you view them

by David Yanofsky

It’s hard to draw a map without making someone angry. There are 32 countries that Google Maps won’t draw borders around. While the so-called geo-highlighting feature—which Google uses to show a searched area’s borders—is unaffected by the locale of the person looking at them, the borders drawn on Google’s base map will look different depending on where in the world you are.

For example, look at the borders of Arunachal Pradesh—an area administered by India but claimed as a section of Tibet by China (which also claims Tibet). The region is shown as part of India when viewed in India; as part of China when viewed in China; and as distinct from both countries when viewed in the US.

Tap to expand image

The border between China and Bhutan has been the subject of decades of diplomatic talks, since the areas China claims in Bhutan’s West would provide China with strategic military positions on the Indian border. The country’s borders are similarly altered when viewed from China, showing some areas administered by Bhutan as part of China.

Tap to expand image

This latest information about Google’s geographic capitulation was revealed at a hackathon this past weekend, sponsored by the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project. The team producing the project included a visiting researcher at MIT, a developer from the publication Medium, a graphics editor from National Public Radio, and a designer at Fast Company. They wrote software to compare borders on Google Maps automatically and then put together a web page documenting their findings on how 12 different disputed areas are drawn.

In response to Quartz’s previous story on Google Maps’ borders, a spokeswoman for the company confirmed the company’s practice of tailoring borders to local views: “Google Maps makes every effort to depict disputed regions and features objectively.” She noted that certain jurisdictions have laws regarding maps, adding, “Where we have local versions, we follow local regulations for naming and borders.”

Today in British TV: Paul McGann’s Pick for Lady Doctors, “Brilliant” Peter Capaldi, Sherlock Alum Joins Ripper Street - Timey wimey, spacey wacey.

McGann still flying the Tilda as Nth Doctor flag

paul mcgann doctor who

Plus: Paul McGann says a Doctor Who video that set the ‘net abuzzing when it was released before the 50th Anniversary special will be getting a sequel. This news is not as good as it could be.

No, it’s not The Night of the Doctor—aka “Paul McGann is back as the Doctor, holy crap, HOLY CRAP!”—that we’ll be seeing more of. According to The Mirror McGann told students at the Cambridge Union Society that The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, a short about Peter Davison, Sylvestor McCoy, and Colin Baker running around trying to get cast in the 50th anniversary special, will be getting the regeneration treatment. It’s not McGann being attractive all over the place (though he did have a cameo), but it has McCoy being a delightful teddy bear of a man, so really, I can’t complain.

McCoy also spoke out about whom he’d like to see as a female Doctor, a subject he’s not been shy of addressing in the past. Via The Mirror, he “…claimed that Doctor Who producers ‘missed a trick’ by casting Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, instead of a first female lead. He named Tilda Swinton and Diana Quick as women he could see in the role.”

Speaking of Capaldi, upcoming Doctor Who villain Keeley Hawes swears that he’ll be awesome, even if Moffat’s not (OK, that last part’s me, not her): “He’s just brilliant. Peter Capaldi is just fabulous – I think everyone’s going to love him.”

One step ahead, Keeley. I already love him. I mean:

And finally, in the realm of that other Moffat show: Louise Brealey (Molly Hooper) will be filling some of that Sherlock hiatus time with a role in Ripper Street, where she’ll go from playing a pathologist to Dr. Amelia Frayn, “one of the first women doctors,” she explains. “I’m really excited because I did history at university and I love a bit of research. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson blazed the trail in the 1870s and in the intervening decade or so a few extremely intrepid and unusual women started learning to be doctors themselves.”

When Ripper Street returns it’ll be exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video, Amazon having rescued the show after the BBC gave it the axe. *coughTheHournextcough*

Second Life studio working on a spiritual sequel

by Alexa Ray Corriea
firehose

internal codename is "Keep James Wagner Au off the Streets"

Second Life developer Linden Lab is currently working on the spiritual sequel to the massively multiplayer online social title, according to a statement the developer provided to Polygon.

This new game, first reported by New World Notes, is a "next generation virtual world" that is "in the spirit of Second Life," an open-world game that will focus on user-created content and interactions. The San Francisco-based studio noted it is actively hiring for this project, which is still in its "very early days."

Linden Lab note that backwards compatibility between its new game and Second Life will not be available at launch and that is not "an absolutely requirement at the start," because the team wants to focus on building the game as a "next generation platform." High-quality visuals and content, according to the statement, is taking priority over making Second Life content "work seamlessly with everything created over Second Life's 11 year history."

"We believe that there is a massive opportunity ahead to carry on the spirit of Second Life while leveraging the significant technological advancements that have occurred since its creation, as well as our unparalleled experience as the provider of the most successful user-created virtual world ever," the statement reads.

Linden told Second Life fans "don't panic" and assured that they will not abandon their previous game. The studio said the game still has many years ahead of it and improvements made for the studio's new project could also benefit Second Life.

The online virtual world of Second Life launched in June 2003. The game allows players over the age of 16 — though there is a restricted version for users age 13-16 — to create avatars that interact with one another, explore the in-game "grid" world and create and trade virtual services and property. Last December, leaked classified documents indicated that the game, along with World of Warcraft and Xbox Live, was monitored by both British and American intelligence groups.
