Hodor Is Sick Of Being Asked If He's Sick Of Saying 'Hodor'

It’s really weird, like a paradox. 'Are you sick of being asked to say Hodor?' 'No, but I’m sick of that.' It’s easier just to say 'Hodor.' I love saying 'Hodor'!"

… BUT WE’RE REALLY GLAD you came out to see it! Thanks to Pat Moran, we’ve got a slew of photos from the final Comics Underground ever—featuring Paul Tobin, Ben Dewey, Cat Farris, Jeff Parker, Joëlle Jones, and Matt Fraction. They’re available for your perusal right here.

Thanks to everybody who came out—whether it was to just one of the shows or to all 12 of them. Thanks to all of the phenomenal creators who worked with us to make sure the event one was we could all be proud of. Thanks to the Jack London Bar for hosting us, to our trusty sponsors at Bridge City Comics and DC Vegetarian, to Bobby Roberts and Grant Peterson for helping out with the details, and to… I don’t know. Comics and basements in general? We had a good run.

The Road to Ultima IV

Richard went through something of a minor existential crisis: “I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing anymore. I tried to figure out who I was and what I was going to do next.” Trivial as it may sound, when Robert Garriott shook his head in embarrassment and the neighbors scowled at the body parts strewn across his lawn after Halloween or the empty trash cans that remained unretrieved at roadside for days on end, he was learning that actions — or, as the case may be, inaction — has consequences. All of these factors led Richard, like so many idealistically-inclined young men before him, to try to develop a philosophy of life that made sense to him. Richard was unique, however, in that he planned to put it all into a computer game — indeed, he saw doing so almost as a duty. He was well aware that the audience for his games was a pretty young and impressionable one, the most common demographic category being an adolescent boy.

If someone spends 100 hours playing my game, I have 100 hours of the input that makes that person what they are. With that comes, in my mind, a sense of responsibility regarding the content of what I’m going to pipeline into that individual for 100 hours.

AMC spending $600 million to add recliners to movie theaters

by Kwame Opam
firehose

"And the strategy is already working."

"Nicer bathrooms are next."

Despite shifting to digital, pushing 3D, and raising ticket prices, the movie industry hasn't seen much growth in the last decade. According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), last year's box office only rose 1% as compared to 2012, and theaters face tough competition from the likes of Netflix. To get moviegoers to fill more seats, AMC Entertainment is spending $600 million over the next five years to outfit 1,800 of its 5,000 auditoriums with La-Z-Boy-style recliners. And the strategy is already working.

The Wall Street Journal reports that AMC is renovating theaters in struggling markets as a means of getting people to come back to the movies. The renovations themselves are costly, running between $350,000 and $500,000 per auditorium. What's more, adding the bigger, comfier seats reduces seating capacity by up to 70 percent. Still, the work seems to be paying off; while the theater chain wouldn't give hard numbers for attendance before and after the renovations, AMC says that attendance rose an average of 80 percent.

Nicer bathrooms are next

AMC isn't yet charging extra for the new amenities, but ticket prices will indeed go up a year after the renovations. The strategy is starting a shift, too; Regal Entertainment is now ramping up its own renovation process by adding recliners in 25 of its own theaters. However, more costs are surely on the way. CEO Gerry Lopez told the Journal that theatergoers have started to expect nicer bathrooms in addition to the nicer seats.

What's With This 'Obama Is Backing Elizabeth Warren Over Hillary' Story?

firehose

mea culpa; via multitasksuicide

would say the first red flag here is that Obama, despite having initially campaigned from the left, has governed (to the frustration of some) largely from the center. This is where Hillary perches. This idea that a Clinton presidency would "undo and undermine" the president's policies just seems silly.

However, the first real red flag seems to be the author himself, who has taken some artistic license in writing about the Clintons before. Here's Paul Janensch on Klein's book The Truth About Hillary.

The most sensational allegation is that Bill Clinton raped Hillary when they were on vacation in Bermuda and that Hillary became pregnant with their daughter, Chelsea, as a result. The only evidence to support this is what two sources -- both unnamed -- claim Bill told them.

Klein also suggests that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian. To support such a conclusion, he contends that Wellesley College, which Hillary attended, was a hotbed of lesbianism and says lesbians were among her best friends."

Media Matters also offers a handy guide to how Klein has been discredited over the years.

Verizon’s “deteriorated” phone lines cited in demand for investigation

by Jon Brodkin

all carriers suck forever

Gal

Dozens of lawmakers, municipal officials, and consumer advocacy groups want a thorough investigation of New York's phone system, accusing Verizon of raising prices substantially while allowing landline service to deteriorate throughout the state.

Rate deregulation has harmed customers, the lawmakers and groups wrote in a petition last week to the New York Public Service Commission (PSC).

"For example, in New York City customer phone bills, since 2006 the price of residential ‘dial tone’ service (one line item on the bill) went up 84 percent, while other services, such as inside wire maintenance, went up 132 percent," the 20-page petition said.

Rector's suit is including what online commenters said about him, and thus he's trying to blame the Yankees, ESPN and MLB for the reaction in the comment section. That's a precedent that would turn the Internet upside down, if it were to hold up in court, which doesn't seem at all likely.

Newswire: Atari is teaming up with Denny’s, for whatever reason

by Katie Rife

In an apparent attempt to capture the “teens who order one cup of coffee and stay all night” demographic, Atari is teaming up with Denny’s to “remix” three of its classic video games into a mildly diverting breakfast-themed format. The promotion will be featured exclusively on the Denny’s app for iPhone and Android and includes the excruciatingly titled “Hashteroids,” “Centipup”, and “Take-Out”. Should you find yourself with a working smartphone in hand and nothing better to do, here are the game descriptions:

Hashteroids – You’re aboard the SS Denny’s Condiment Transport ship and the mission is clear: deliver 40 tons of condiments to the 4th planet in sector 7d.

Centipup – Once upon a time, a young boy named Danny came across a bottle of syrup and with just a slight squeeze the bottle’s sticky contents had the power to turn anyone or anything into a fried ...

Newswire: Doctors warn that Motörhead is so hardcore it will make your brain bleed

by Sean O'Neal

In a report destined to be clipped and passed around by the concerned parents of 1982, medical journal The Lancet has published a study warning that headbanging to Motörhead has the potential to make your brain bleed. The article’s findings are based on the case of some punk 50-year-old kid who complained to German doctors at the Hannover Medical School of constant headaches, which he said had developed after he’d attended a Motörhead concert earlier that month. With no history of head injuries or substance abuse problems to further account for his pain—and with a CT scan revealing a chronic subdural haemotoma on the right side of his brain—the doctors came to the conclusion that his self-admitted “years” headbanging was the cause. They also concluded that, in their professional opinion, Motörhead kicks ass.

“Headbanging, with its brisk forward and backward acceleration and deceleration forces, led to ...
