Ultimate Chicken Horse is competitive platform design on the fly

by Colin Campbell

There are a ton of interesting games at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth this year, and Polygon is going to post about a few of them in the days ahead.

One that is nearing completion and attracting attention on the show floor is Ultimate Chicken Horse from Clever Endeavour. It's a four-player game in which farmyard competitors pick basic platform game elements and place them together to create a level.

They must then try to complete the level. Those who fail lose points. As the game goes on, the level becomes more complex and more dangerous, but each player has an interest in making sure it's complete-able. If no one finishes the level, no one scores.

Playing the game at PAX today yielded lots of dastardly tricks and laughs, as players sought to outdo one another. Modes are also planned for smaller numbers of human competitors, including single-player.

Ultimate Chicken Horse, which was the subject of a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, is out in September on Linux, Mac and Windows PC.

Star Trek Wall Comm #SciFiSunday

by Kelly

FPYHBGJIDFSBP81 LARGE

We’re loving this Star Trek themed project from instructables user FredO2!

In this instructable I will show you how to make a Star Trek (Original Series) Wall Comm that, when the transmitter is activated, will sound the classical wall comm boatswain whistle followed by 1 of 4 recorded original series on-board transmissions, thereby indicating that you have to go to the location of the transmitter, or any other decided location, you can then press the white comm button allowing you to respond to the transmitter. It can also sound TOS alert klaxon plus red alert lights when the red alert button is activated.

Star Citizen's social module finally launches to backers

by Owen S. Good
firehose

never coming out
- no collision detection
- five areas aren't done yet

the update alone is 30GB; the whole game so far is 26GB

Star Citizen's social module, the environment in which players interact with one another outside of space combat, has launched alongside the game's also-overdue 1.2 patch.

The social module was originally pegged for a beta launch sometime in the spring quarter of this year, along with the beta for the game's first-person combat module, according to a presentation by Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts back in January.

The Social Module is staged on a spacebase's landing zone, "with all the scenic vistas our team has been hard at work on," a community manager announced late yesterday. "This will also include our first iteration of our augmented reality system, emotes and chat system."

Seven in-game areas are explorable within the social module. The full list of features arriving with this beta edition of the social module, and the rest of Patch 1.2, may be read here.

Star Citizen and Cloud Imperium Games are facing considerable turmoil over the inability to deliver the stages of the massive space combat game on the schedule Cloud Imperium set for backers in 2015 — most notably the first-person shooter module, Star Marine.

At the end of June, the company announced it could not meet an informal deadline of this spring to roll out the FPS module to backers. On July 18, Roberts said backers could expect the first-person module in "three, four, maybe five weeks," targeting its arrival sometime around Gamescom, which ended two weeks ago.

Roberts attributed the delays in Star Marine to the need to use a single set of animations in the game's first- and third-person visuals. Yet the inability to meet deadlines, even informal ones set internally, have caused significant unhappiness among backers, with some seeking and receiving refunds of their contributions.

Star Citizen is by far the most crowdsourced video game project in history. It has amassed $88 million in donationsacross multiple sources from nearly 970,000 backers.

Old Town's About to Become A Lot More Bike-Friendly

by Dirk VanderHart

Looks like Downtown Portland's best bike lane is coming to Old Town.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is planning to chop one lane of automobile traffic on the mini-freeway that is 3rd Avenue, between Davis and Stark. That was first reported yesterday by bikeportland.org. For a cost of $40,000 (between installation and outreach/planning) the bureau plans to set up shop in the very spot where 3rd's bike lane inexplicably disappears at NW Davis, and extend the new lane six blocks south.

This is a remarkable situation in a lot of ways—particularly for downtown. Old Town's business owners have shown a lot less reticence than many around the city in pushing for new bike amenities. Last year, the neighborhood welcomed an unprecedented (in Portland) experiment to reshape NW and SW 3rd Avenue—a shift that gave bikes and pedestrians (gasp!) the same priority as cars for a long weekend.

The lane the city's planning will transform an entire car/bike lane into a bike-only lane (except for a small "mixing zone" north of Burnside). It'll have sizable buffer areas on each side to distance bikes from traffic and parked cars. That's not as ideal as a lane that's physically separated from car traffic—something the city's currently looking into, but it's far better than the sloppy, too-wide mess on this stretch of 3rd today. Andersen notes that the new project will amount to the only "buffered" bike lane downtown, making it one of the better bike facilities Portland has in its most traffic-choked region.

This is also the first permanent change to Portland's streets stoked by Better Block PDX, the group that masterminded last year's experiment in Old Town, but the impetus extends back to before that group existed. It had its roots in an advisory group—made up of Old Town businesses, social service providers and residents—that had been grappling with how to improve the weekly street closures in Old Town's entertainment district.

"We realized street reconfiguration could be a quick, easy, positive, incremental fix," says Ryan Hashagan, a member of the group and owner of Portland Pedicabs. "It could create a safer neighborhood."

The idea led to the involvement of Better Block, which set up a three-day demonstration. "That was kind of when the neighborhood started to say 'yeah we’re interested,'" says PBOT spokeswoman Hannah Schafer.

(Better Block was also responsible for toying with bike lanes on Naito during the Rose Festival and Oregon Brewers Festival earlier this year, something we highlighted in a piece about Portland's resurgent bike activism in June.)

The planned bike lane is just phase one of changes coming to the area. PBOT's also working on a scaled-down version of the public plaza Better Block set up in front of Voodoo Donut.

Baltimore defense lawyers to review nearly 2,000 cases involving stingrays

by Nathan Mattise

This week, USA Today's investigative team shined a light on the Baltimore police department and their use of stingrays. The paper found cops deployed the cell phone trackers in crimes as minor as harassing phone calls, and the authorities would often conceal the results of that surveillance from suspects and lawyers despite the fact that Maryland law "generally requires that electronic surveillance be disclosed in court," according to the paper.

Evidently, the story found the right eyeballs. USA Today now reports that defense lawyers in Baltimore have pledged to examine nearly 2,000 cases involving police using stingrays. The lawyers plan to use their findings to approach judges and for “a large number” of criminal convictions to be overturned, the paper writes.

“This is a crisis, and to me it needs to be addressed very quickly,” Baltimore’s deputy public defender, Natalie Finegar, told USA Today. “No stone is going to be left unturned at this point.”

Coming Distractions: The trailer for Downton Abbey’s final season lays it on as thick as ever

'Rich Lordington, or his sidekick, Loyal Butlerman'

You may have heard that Downton Abbey is ending this season—as it must, lest a wanderlust-afflicted Maggie Smith burn through the show’s entire complement of media handlers in her efforts to escape. The show’s marketing team, unsurprisingly, in playing hard into that sense of finality and the ending of an era, releasing a new promo for the sixth season that employs the series’ signature subtlety and restraint. Which is to say, it’s a minute-long montage of people closing doors, hugging, and speaking wistfully, while Lauren Aquilina sings “Time To Say Goodbye” as though the thought of never seeing Rich Lordington, or his sidekick, Loyal Butlerman, was driving her permanently to the brink of tears.

In terms of plot information, there’s not much here to be found; everyone looks sad, then someone says something reflective, and then, BAM!, another door gets closed—so maybe there’s ...

Newswire: “Big Brother” Apple may have stopped Drake from being streamed on Tidal

'Lil Wayne’s Lil Weezyana festival in New Orleans'

fuck wayne

In a reminder that feuds between rappers don’t have anything on the battles between rival music streaming services anymore, amateur beefer and Whataburger hero Drake may have become a pawn in the battle between Apple and its artist-owned rival, Tidal. Drake made a surprise appearance last night at Lil Wayne’s Lil Weezyana festival in New Orleans, appearing alongside the Tidal co-owner and performing a three-song set to help raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. At least, that’s what’s being reported by live attendees, since anyone watching the concert’s broadcast on the streaming service was greeted only by a black screen for the duration of Drake’s performance.

It’s not 100 percent clear why online viewers were denied the sweet, life-giving Drake feed they so desperately need; Tidal placed the blame firmly on Apple, citing the iTunes owner’s exclusivity deal with the artist ...

Rare Photos Documenting Life In Silicon Valley During The Digital Revolution

firehose

'Apple programmer Sarah Clark kept her newborn baby with her at work, almost never leaving the building for two years as the team rushed to finish the software. She pulled curtains over her office so colleagues knew when it was naptime or if she was breast-feeding. Her dedication was typical of Apple employees, and management was generally grateful. Flexible hours and other worker-friendly modifications were adopted, and John Sculley showed leadership by appointing women to positions of power (an unusual move in Silicon Valley at that time). What’s not often considered is that whoever writes the code determines how the machine will behave and interact with the user. What if someone other than a 20-something white man wrote the code? A different world view would likely change the priorities of the code writer, and that would likely change the nature of the technology that is so profoundly shaping our behavior and culture.'

'As the Newton team worked even more hours, including almost every weekend, they began to bring wives, husbands, and children into the Apple offices. That way, kids could see their parents in daylight hours. Today, Apple employees still work very long hours, particularly when new products are being readied for market.'

From 1985 to 2000, photographer Doug Menuez had unparalleled access to the private daily lives of Steve Jobs and other brilliant innovators during the rise and fall of Silicon Valley's golden age.

Republican leaders still support 'gun rights' everywhere but near them

What, you don't want this guy protecting you?
At ThinkProgress, Scott Keyes compiles a list of super-duper pro-gun Republicans that think Americans should be able to carry loaded guns everywhere, all the time but have barred guns from places or events where they themselves might be appearing. For a few examples:
George W. Bush Presidential Library- Though Bush was a strong proponent of gun rights, his presidential library in Dallas demands that all visitors leave their firearms at home. According to a sign posted outside, guns are prohibited “For the security of our visitors, staff and facility.”
I can see that. The George W. Bush Presidential Library is likely to stir up strong emotions in people, emotions like "oh right, I remember that" and "aren't there supposed to be books here?"
Republican Conventions- Firearms were banned at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, even as delegates inside passed language into the party platform affirming that Republicans “acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right of self-defense.” State Republican conventions also regularly forbid guns.
I can see that, too. Wait, no I can't. If you can't trust actual Republican delegates with guns, who can you trust? If I can't go to a fast-food restaurant without braving a possible gauntlet of proud patriots looking to defend themselves from invisible Russian hordes, you should at least trust those same folks to protect your most Important Party Leaders.
Presidential Campaign Stops- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), a prominent gun advocate who has signed legislation expanding gun rights, prohibited “guns, ammunition, fireworks, electric stun guns, mace, selfie-sticks, martial arts weapons/devices, or knives of any size” from his presidential campaign kick-off event.
That one's not fair at all. You can't claim Scott Walker has an opinion on gun rights just because he's previously stated such things or signed legislation to that effect. You can't prove he even knows what a "gun" is, at least not until the focus group results come back.

The granddaddy of them all, of course, is Congress. No, Congress does not want you to bring your guns. No, not even after Republicans took back control of both legislative bodies, and no, there's no future plans to do it either. This is because Republican politicians do not actually believe that everyone carrying loaded guns around would be "safer" than not allowing that thing, at least not when it's their own necks on the line. A gun in every classroom, though? Now that's something they can get behind.

Court gives SeaTac workers a raise after $15 minimum wage exclusion

HEATHER WEINER: GCA is a contractor that has 30,000 employees around the country. They are owned by Blackstone, which is a major Wall Street investment group, which is worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

PAUL SOLMAN: That prompted a last question for multimillionaire investor Nick Hanauer about his fellow one-hundredth of the 1 percenters.

How do you personally feel when you hear that a company like Blackstone has taken workers who used to work for Avis and Budget back to minimum wage, subcontracted?

NICK HANAUER: On the one hand, I feel like it’s a moral abomination, but the truth is that they may have felt that they needed to do that because their competitor had already done it and they wouldn’t be able to compete on price if they hadn’t.

PAUL SOLMAN: The seemingly inexorable pressure of competition, in other words, which is why the workers of SeaTac had organized, they explained, to counter with pressure of their own.
