After Cecil the lion’s killing, Delta is banning big-game hunts from its flights

by Gabriel Fisher
Delta Airlines flight flies by moon

In a win for outraged animal advocates, Delta Airlines, the largest US carrier to Africa, announced today that it would ban the freight shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo trophies globally.

Although the airline did not mention it, the move comes amid pressure from animal rights groups after beloved lion Cecil was killed in Zimbabwe by an American dentist in July. Had Cecil’s body not been seized by Zimbabwean authorities, Delta would have been a likely carrier of the prized parts for Walter Palmer, who shot Cecil, to transport them home (Delta is the only American airline company to offer direct flights to Africa).

A handful of other airlines—including British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qantas, Qatar, Etihad, Iberia, Singapore and Brussels Airlines—had already banned shipments of some exotic animal hunting trophies. Delta had been noticeably absent from the list.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the US, praised Delta for setting a good example. These animals “belong on the savanna, not on the walls and in home museums of wealthy people who spend a fortune to kill the grandest, most majestic animals in the world,” he said in a statement.

Delta did not respond immediately to a request for more detail on its policy.

Mark Hamill is more than happy to ruin your Star Wars stuff with his autograph

Mark Hamill has been signing Star Wars junk for well over 35 years, so it’s no surprise that Luke Skywalker himself has to get a little creative with his autographs. Hamill also appears to give zero fucks about your mint condition Star Wars bubblegum cards. Recently on Imgur, more than a few Topps trading cards featuring the last of the Jedi’s signature have surfaced online.

0-day bug in fully patched OS X comes under active exploit to bypass password protection

by Dan Goodin

Hackers are exploiting a serious zero-day vulnerability in the latest version of Apple's OS X so they can install adware applications without requiring victims to enter system passwords, researchers said.

As Ars reported last week, the privilege-escalation bug stems from new error-logging features that Apple added to OS X 10.10. Developers didn't use standard safeguards involving additions to the OS X dynamic linker dyld, a failure that lets attackers open or create files with root privileges that can reside anywhere in the OS X file system. It was disclosed last week by security researcher Stefan Esser.

On Monday, researchers from anti-malware firm Malwarebytes said a new malicious installer is exploiting the vulnerability to surreptitiously infect Macs with several types of adware including VSearch, a variant of the Genieo package, and the MacKeeper junkware. Malwarebytes researcher Adam Thomas stumbled on the exploit after finding the installer modified the sudoers configuration file. In a blog post, Malwarebytes researchers wrote:

Newswire: Motörhead’s Lemmy and Slayer’s Tom Araya join that German silent Western

by Sam Barsanti

Last month, we reported on the existence of Gutterdämmerung, the self-described “loudest silent movie on Earth” that is basically a supernatural Western/fairy tale where most of the principal characters are played by huge rock stars. At the time, we knew it would feature Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Grace Jones, and Jesse Hughes from The Eagles Of Death Metal, but director Björn Tagemose promised a handful of other people who would be joining up to play crazy cowboy angels or whatever. Now we know who two of those people are: Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead and Tom Araya from Slayer.

According to a press release, Lemmy will be playing “a crazed general” who is in charge of the “Armour Cavalry.” Araya will be “a mysterious messenger of darkness” who will be “bringing the light…with a truly primal performance.” Along with those announcements, we also have a better idea of what ...

Google Minus: Google keeps backing all the wrong social products

by Ron Amadeo
firehose

RUST IN PAIN PLUS

'Contrast Buzz with Google Reader—the Web-based RSS reader that Google murdered in 2013. This was sort of a social network. At least, it was in 2011 before all the social features were gutted in favor of Google+. There were profiles and a friends list. You could share things, make lists, and follow people. You could comment on new stories, and there was even a "Like" button. The site felt like Twitter but with full news articles instead of just links. Some users had more than 7,500 followers.

Dear Google: taking away my Google Reader functionality will not make me use Google+. It will only make me mad. Kthxbai. Love, Megan

— Megan McArdle (@asymmetricinfo) October 31, 2011
People loved Google Reader. Today, when Internet companies make people mad they sign petitions from the comfort of their computer desk. For Google Reader, there were literal protesters with picket signs outside of Google's offices.

Google understood it needed the network effect to make Google+ successful, but somehow the company twisted that into the idea that "only this social network can exist" and all others inside Google must be destroyed or Borged into the Google+ collective. The network effect relies on people actually liking the service.

Google doesn't always seem to get the "choice" part of social networking. Google doesn't get to pick the social networks, the users do, and if social is important to the company, it needs to listen, react, and improve the social networks people actually like.'

Michelle MacPhearson

The very first wave of Google+, before the Google+ site even existed: Google added "+1" buttons to search results.

The Great Google+ Purge is officially underway. The social network isn't dead, but the plan to make Google+ the "social backbone" of Google is. After integrating Google+ with just about everything in the Google Ecosystem, Google's social strategy has "pivoted" and Google+ will now be de-integrated out of everything. Google+ will be left to stand alone as a (probably niche) social stream.

Google+ was, in a word, "forced." It was forced not only into products and on users but onto the rest of the company, too. In 2011, for instance, Larry Page famously tied all employee bonuses to the company's success in social. It was easy to see why Page decided to do this at the time: Facebook was big and growing and scary. What if people stopped using search and just asked their friends for websites and product recommendations?

With a fear-powered, top-down mandate and every employee having a vested interest in Google+, the social network got shoehorned into every Google product. Google+ showed up in Search, Android, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Play, and many others.

Coroner: Bottle held by Ohio motorist before officer shot him contained fragrance, not booze

A bottle held up by a motorist during a traffic stop before he was fatally shot by a University of Cincinnati police officer apparently contained a fragrance, not alcohol, a coroner said Monday.

Hamilton County coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco said in a statement that lab analysis found compounds consistent with those commonly found in air fresheners or perfumes.

UC police had said after the July 19 shooting of Samuel DuBose that he produced a bottle of alcohol during the traffic stop. A police body camera video released last week showed the bottle he picked up from his car floor appeared to be labeled as gin. Officer Ray Tensing had asked about the bottle while questioning DuBose after stopping him for not having a front license plate.

Tensing pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter after his indictment last week. He thought he was going to be dragged under the car and "feared for his life," according to his attorney.

thatjayjustice:

This is just the most recent of countless similar messages I have received because of my Wonder Woman costumes. I am so tired of white, white passing, and anti-Black people from any and all ethnic backgrounds and nationalities looking at me in my costume and telling me ‘You don’t deserve to wear that. Wonder Woman isn’t for Black people.’

It’s nothing to do with ‘accuracy’, it’s racism and I’m sick of it. In before ‘Oh but they just didn’t know about Nubia!!’ Please. You can try to use ignorance as an excuse but you have to ask yourself, even if these people don’t know there IS a Black Wonder Woman, what makes them feel like they have the right to tell Black people what they can and cannot do? What gives them this supposed authority over our imaginations and our desire to create? This mentality is the reason why so many potential cosplayers of color are afraid to even wear a costume.

I can and have sent these people panels, pages and issues of official DC comics full of images of Black Wonder Women (yes, there are more than one!) and it doesn’t matter to them. My skin is still too dark, my nose too broad, my hair too nappy, in their words, not mine. I have been told to my face that I disgrace the Wonder Woman costume with my Blackness. Many other people of color have gone through similar experiences. I know of only one way for us to combat this.

Create, design, display and wear whatever we damn well please. Let our differences enhance our art. Let every single privileged individual who thinks to question our rights to self expression choke on their words. Feel free to be yourself in whatever way you see fit. Do not let other people’s opinions of your race or ethnicity dictate your choices. Don’t let the way they see you have anything to do with who you are.

Newswire: New Ghostbusters visit children’s hospital, fanboys take issue with good deed

by Mike Vanderbilt

The cast of Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot made the rounds at Boston’s Tufts Medical Center Saturday; taking a break from their busy shooting schedule, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon posed for pictures and playfully searched for focused, non-terminal, repeating phantasms under patients’ beds.

The new supernatural comedy is currently filming in Boston, which is standing in for the original’s New York City; oddly enough, it’s the only thing that hasn’t offended people about the newest entry in the Ghostbusters franchise. According to E! News Daily, some of the kids at Tuft’s Floating Hospital for Children put a sign in the windows that spelled out “Who ya gonna call?,” grabbing the attention of the cast and crew. There are no reports of any of the children mocking the new uniform designs or proton packs, because apparently these kids know how to ...

by Marah Eakin

In news that shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise to anyone with a passing familiarity with actual jokes or any degree of skepticism where the internet is concerned, yet another comedian is mad at Instagram users Fuck Jerry and The Fat Jew for stealing his jokes.

That joke was quickly re-posted without attribution by both Fuck Jerry’s Elliot Tebele and the Fat Jew’s Josh Ostrovsky, both of whom are Instagram “personalities” with millions of followers. (Tebele even left a grammatical error Magwood made in his post.)

Magwood, in turn, posted an open letter to the ...

Newswire: HBO temporarily shuts down production on Lewis And Clark miniseries

by Sam Barsanti

Much like President Thomas Jefferson would have done if the original expedition had turned into a complicated headache with a bunch of creative and logistical issues, HBO has announced that it is “temporarily pausing production” on its upcoming Lewis And Clark miniseries. That comes from Deadline, which says production has been “a rough shoot so far,” with internal issues and “weather-related factors” forcing HBO to make “two major behind-the scenes changes.”

Those changes probably won’t impact the average TV watcher much, though: Director John Curran and director of photography Rob Hardy have both left Lewis And Clark (whether it was their idea or not, however, remains unknown). Now HBO is scrambling to replace them, hence suspending production. Stars Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts are still on board, as are executive producers Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, and Brad Pitt. Oh, sure, directors are important, but most people are happy as ...

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

Black women activists have been saying this for a while now (the whole thing between @BrownBlaze and @deray was about this). @thetrudz is even stepping away from online activism because of the violence inherent in pushing exposure to images of black people being murdered. But this string of tweets is a nice summary of a topic with a wealth of rich discussion going on behind it.

Activism that harms activists “for the benefit” of the oppressor…I wonder at it. I can’t speak on it as a white person, but the paradigm rings my bell a lot re: online feminist activism/my role according to men “trying to learn”/how fucking used and exhausted I felt trying to fulfill that role.

Which is to say, if black women are saying constant overexposure of dead and brutalized black people is doing more harm than good, I’m way more Team Them than what 1) men prioritizing “teaching white people” have to say about it, 2) white people who want to rubberneck “cause how else can I learn?!” have to say about it.
