Has attention-seeking game violence had its day?

by Colin Campbell

Lurid depictions of wanton violence have long been an attention-grabber for game makers, as they seek to grab headlines and marketing juice.

But according to veteran game developer Sid Meier, it might well be time to move on.

Meier, best known for the much-respected Civilization series of games, gave a speech at a convention organized by his Take-Two-owned development studio Firaxis today. He told the audience at Firaxicon that games have matured and do not need to depend on shock tactics.

"I think we've come a long way," he said, according to a report filed by GamesIndustry. "There was a time when spines were pulled out of players and we don't have to do that anymore. I think we got people's attention. We can make good games now. I think there's been a lot of progress in that regard."

GTA 5 torture

GTA 5 torture

Meier was referring to the Mortal Kombat games which gained media notoriety in the 1990s through their brutal and cartoonish depictions of violence. But more modern games, like the successful Call of Duty series and Grand Theft Auto 5, have attracted attention through graphic depictions of carnage and torture.

Meier's games sometimes depict large-scale warfare and destruction, but only in the abstract. He said his work tried not to deal in "glorified violence."

"I'm certainly not in favor of any sort of censorship," he added. "We're artists, we're creative and we should be able to do what we want. On the other hand, it's hard to say our games are immersive and grab people, allow them to participate and make them the stars, and then say that there's no impact, or that it doesn't affect them.

"So I think we have to walk that line. I think people know the difference between fantasy and reality. Gamers are very mature and intelligent people. However, whatever we can do to create a positive climate we should do."

McDonald's brings Iowa State uniform joke to life

by Patrick Vint

The Cyclones embrace an old rivalry joke, and America's biggest fast food franchise joins in.

Iowa fans like to mock their in-state brethren from Iowa State for their color scheme, a mixture of red and yellow reminiscent of ketchup and mustard. More specifically, it is reminiscent of America's top producer of things that ketchup and mustard go on: McDonald's. The jokes evolved to the point where our own Black Heart Gold Pants imagined Iowa State alternate uniforms inspired by Ronald McDonald.

But every joke has a hint of truth at its source. Wednesday, Iowa State announced it was wearing all-yellow uniforms this weekend:

#Cyclones going for Gold on Saturday. #LoyalForeverTrue pic.twitter.com/nHp1UnQd8p

— Cyclone Football (@CycloneFB) October 8, 2014

Some quickly pointed out that the ISU alternate uniforms bear an uncanny resemblance to the costume worn by a certain hamburger-purveying clown.

The joke was complete with an endorsement from McDonald's itself:

@cyclonefb We think your new unis look pretty sharp! #cyclones

— McDonald's (@McDonaldsCorp) October 8, 2014

To their credit, ISU head coach Paul Rhoads and senior center Tom Farniok have taken the slight in stride, and are trying to make chicken nuggets out of chicken parts:

Rhoads on @McDonalds: "I think it's flattering that one of America's largest corporations is excited about the Cyclones and gold on gold."

— Alex Halsted (@AlexHalsted) October 8, 2014

I can only hope McDonald's sponsors us

— Tom Farniok (@Farnyard) October 8, 2014

Iowa State unveils the yellow uniforms Saturday against Toledo. The broadcast is only available on Iowa State's streaming service, likely because broadcasters didn't want to unintentionally anger Burger King.

One of the cooler new features in the NHL this season is the referee cam, which gives viewers a look at everything the referee sees on the ice.

It's going to be great for when they miss a hooking penalty right in front of the net. Like this.

Fin Crowthers 3DP Stop Motion #3DxAnimation of Quadruped Run Cycles #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Matt

Fin Crowthers 3DP Stop Motion #3DxAnimation of Quadruped Run Cycles. Via 3DPrint.com.

This is a project that I started after my graduation to keep me occupied whilst seeking permanent work in the industry. I had seen the viral video ‘Bears on Stairs’ by DBGL during my degree in Newcastle and since then it had always been playing in my mind that I’d like to make something similar should the opportunity arise.

The opportunity to access 3D printing came about when I under took some temporary work as a model making technician within the Design Development Centre at Huddersfield University. With the help of some digital tutors tutorials (mainly because I was interested in rigging and animating a quadruped and had never done so before) I modelled, rigged and animated the quadruped’s run cycle in Autodesk Maya. The run cycle run was a 10 fame loop running at 24fps, meaning that I needed to print 10 different poses off on the printer. Taking each frame of the run cycle I edited them to have the support, fit on a base and then cleaned up the mesh to make it water tight and ready to print before exporting from Maya. This was roughly 24 hours of work over about a week in my spare time.

The prints were printed using the Stratasys Fortus 360mc and each print is approximately 6cm long and 3cm high. A base for each print was cut out on a lazer cutter and then each print had to be photographed in exactly the same position as the last. I used Adobe After Effects to loop the photos taken of the prints before exporting as a video file. The printer took about 10 hours to print the 10 models and an hour or so to photograph. It has been a valuable experience using 3D printing and I hope to experiment and work with it more on upcoming projects.

PALO ALTO, CA—Speaking at the gym at the high school where he used to play basketball in the 1960s, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) gave a dire warning to a group of students and locals on Wednesday about the effects of government spying on Silicon Valley: "There is a clear and present danger to the Internet economy."

The Oregon senator led a roundtable discussion on the "Impact of Mass Surveillance on the Digital Economy" with representatives from major Silicon Valley firms, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Dropbox. Wyden, a longstanding critic of the National Security Agency (NSA) and United States government’s policy on digital surveillance, made the case that active spying hurts the American economy.

"The NSA ran an expensive and invasive bulk e-mail records collection program for years, and it turned out to be worthless," he said. "And its bulk phone records collection program is still up and running now, even though the President’s own surveillance review group has indicated that it is not necessary or effective."

iOS 8.1 plugs security hole that made it easy to install emulators

by Kyle Orland

The next version of iOS may not be an upgrade for fans who use their iDevices to emulate classic games. The latest beta version of iOS 8.1 removes the famous (or infamous) "Date Trick" workaround used by iOS emulator makers to bypass App Store restrictions on their work, without the need to jailbreak the device.

Apple rules have long prevented emulators for classic game consoles and computers from appearing on the App Store, though some have managed to sneak their way through briefly (or more officially through a licensing deal with rights holders). Since last year, though, the makers of emulators like GBA4iOS and SNES emulator SiOS have relied on a loophole called the "Date Trick" to allow these apps (and ROM files) to be downloaded and installed through the built-in Safari browser. The trick gets around restrictions on unsigned apps by setting the device's date back at least two months, allowing users to easily run emulators to their heart's content without jailbreaking.

iOS 8.1 beta testers are reporting those days of easy emulation seem to be coming to an end in the latest update, though. GBA4iOS tester Dario Sepulveda writes that iOS 8.1 Beta 2 blocks the Date Trick workaround, cutting off the ability to install the app.

★ Note to Self: It’s the Storage Space, Stupid

by John Gruber
firehose

via Albener Pessoa
"I don’t think I have ever received so much reader feedback on a post in the history of Daring Fireball" about being wrong

Last night I speculated that the slow uptake of iOS 8 was about people not trusting Apple with iOS software updates — too many bugs, and too many friends and family members talking about those bugs. I still think there’s something to that angle.

But it’s very clear that I was wrong about what the primary factor is. The simple answer was staring me right in the face. It’s all about the over-the-air update requiring 5 GB of free storage space, and many people not having that much free space, and not knowing how or simply not wanting to deal with it.

I don’t think I have ever received so much reader feedback on a post in the history of Daring Fireball. Hundreds of emails. Dozens and dozens of replies on Twitter. All of them saying the exact same thing: that either they themselves or people they know want to upgrade to iOS 8 but haven’t yet or can’t because the OTA software update won’t fit on their devices.

Jonathan Hoover puts it well:

iOS 8 OTA update requires about 5GB of free space on the device. Most people, especially those who wouldn’t update until they get the badge on the settings app, don’t have 5GB free on their iPhone. They have no idea they can plug their iPhone into their computer and iTunes will update it. They don’t know they can free up space by downloading their pictures and videos to their computer.

iPhone makes it so easy for casual users to take gigabytes of photos and videos but nearly impossible for those users to know what to do with them.

This is a serious problem for Apple, because all those 16 GB devices (let alone the 8 GB ones) aren’t going to suddenly gain more free storage space on their own. A lot of these devices might never get updated to iOS 8, but would if the OTA software worked. Unless they can rejigger the OTA software update to require less free space, iOS 8’s adoption rate might lag permanently.1

Which in turn brings to mind one of the closing paragraphs of my review of the new iPhones 6:

But I don’t understand why the entry level storage tier remained at a meager 16 GB. That seems downright punitive given how big panoramic photos and slo-mo HD videos are, and it sticks out like a sore thumb when you look at the three storage tiers together: 32/64/128 looks natural; 16/64/128 looks like a mistake. The original iPhone, seven years and eight product generations ago, had an 8 GB storage tier. The entry-level iPhones 6 are 50 times faster than that original iPhone, but have only twice the storage capacity. That’s just wrong. This is the single-most disappointing aspect of the new phones.

iOS itself takes up about 4 GB, so these 16 GB devices only have about 12 GB free right out of the box. If there is any way that Apple could have brought the base model storage up to 32 GB with the new iPhones, they should have. And it’s inexcusable that they’re still selling new devices with only 8 GB of storage.

If this decision was made simply in the interest of profit margins, and/or to nudge would-be entry-level-model buyers to the more expensive 64 GB mid-range models, whatever money Apple is making from this is not worth it, in the long run, compared to the collective goodwill they’re losing and the frustration they’re creating.

  1. One small thing Apple could do: when alerting the user that there isn’t enough space to install the update, they could provide a link to this support article — “Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update” — which is actually quite helpful.

Newswire: Eddie Izzard to adapt Junior Bender detective novels for NBC

by Mike Vago

... huh.

Television is a ravenous beast, endlessly hungering for more cop, lawyer and doctor shows to fill its gaping maw. Showrunners, trembling in fear before the idiot box’s monstrous desires, are under constant pressure to come up with novel twists on the long-since stale crime drama. A criminal who helps the cops. A serial killer who we know will help the cops eventually. A cop who’s also a criminal. An arsonist who only burns down the houses of other arsonists. A team of cops who does basically the same shit as other cops but in a different city.

It’s not easy to come up with a new premise for a crime story, but Timothy Hallinan has managed it. The novelist’s seriocomic Junior Bender series concerns a high-end thief who becomes a private eye—a private eye who only solves mysteries at the behest of other criminals. Hallinan ...

Comcast's purchase of Time Warner Cable includes a sale of certain territories to Charter. Charter would take over in Lexington after the deal.

A 14-year-old boy's videotape of an Indiana cop smashing an ax though a vehicle window, shooting the passenger with a stun gun, and ripping him from the vehicle has become the subject of an excessive force lawsuit.

Monday's lawsuit [PDF] is among the most recent in a wave of police encounters gone awry that have been captured on video and resulted in legal action. The incident was filmed two weeks ago in Hammond, Indiana, and it started with a motorist being stopped and pulled over for allegedly not wearing a seatbelt.
