Ultima Underworld 3 Ascendant Is Funded

by Alec Meer

By Alec Meer on February 27th, 2015 at 6:00 pm.

get a haircut, dude

Two years ago, if you’d asked me how a spiritual Ultima Underworld sequel made by assorted Origin/Looking Glass veterans would fare on Kickstarter, I’d have said “funded in 60 seconds!” then smiled smugly. In 2014, that really doesn’t happen unless you’re a funny watch or a card game about weapons of mass kitty destruction. It looked a little touch and go for Underworld Ascendant for a while there, but it’s now crossed its $600k finish line with a few days to spare.

…I was going to write a bunch of other stuff about Underworld, but I just found out while I was working on this post that the wonderful Leonard Nimoy has died. This was supposed to be a celebratory post, but now I am very sad. This is the loss of someone truly iconic. I shall revisit Civilization IV and his note-perfect narration of it in his honour.

Congratulations to Otherside Games. I’m glad you to get to make this game, and I’m sorry for making this a post about something else.

House of Cards turns a video game reviewer into a major plot point

by Michael McWhertor

Netflix's House of Cards has already had its share of memorable video game cameos — remember Frank Underwood saying, "Is that a PS Vita?" oh so product placement-y? — but one video game plays an important role in the show's newly released third season ... in which a fiction writer and video game reviewer is tapped to write the President's biography.

The game is ustwo's award-winning Monument Valley, which Underwood plays thoughtfully in the season's fifth episode. Later in the episode, Underwood invites writer Thomas Yates to the White House to offer him a biography writing gig. In order to convince Yates that he's the right man for the job, Underwood reads back to him his write-up on Monument Valley.

"You read my video game reviews?" Yates responds incredulously.

"I tend to play shoot 'em ups," Underwood says, an interest we've seen in previous episodes. "The indie games don't really interest me. I need adrenaline, action ... but when I read this, I had to try it. If you can convince me to be a silent princess with just 100 words, imagine how many millions you can convince with this book. You are a salesman, Thomas."

"I wasn't trying to sell anything, just describe my experience," Yates says.

So there you go. The leap from reviewing video games to writing a presidential biography is not such a big one anymore.

The makers of Monument Valley had some nice things to say about their game's cameo in a tweet earlier today.

Monument Valley isn't the only indie game cameo in season 3. In a later episode, Frank is confounded by the appeal of The Stanley Parable, which he's introduced to by Thomas.

Adorable Creatures: Otterling

by Miranda
firehose

"As otters have historically been used to help fishermen catch fish, I felt it would be an interesting addition for otterlings to have once been enslaved by humans." no, it's not fucking interesting, fucking shit

OtterlingQuick-witted, devious, and ambitious, otterlings are a mischievous race that dwells in riverfront villages. They make natural craftsmen and nimble fighters on the battlefield. Meanwhile their grandiose ambitions often lead them to unlawfulness.

Otterlings are the second race in the Adorable Creatures series, following Garden Gnomes. As natural rogues and wizards, otterlings make powerful allies, often thinking outside the box and having a plan or at least the resources to get them out of any situation. However, their unethical practices and greed can put them at odds with more lawful party members.

For my campaigns, I wanted to create a culture of people who make their living off the black market or else are known for raising rogues and wizards. Though evil, otterling settlements see the value of good business and rarely attack good-doers on sight. This allows DMs to include otterling villages in good campaigns where party members can track down an enemy on the run, find new magical items, or find information on the shadier corners of the world.

For the race, I naturally drew inspiration from otters. They have a bonus in Swim checks and a penchant for crafting (otters are among the few animals to use tools). As otters have historically been used to help fishermen catch fish, I felt it would be an interesting addition for otterlings to have once been enslaved by humans. Thus otterlings are not prone to trusting humans, a race that is typically seen as a safe choice in character creation.

Doctors know they can’t change anti-vaxxers’ minds—but they can refuse to treat their kids

by Annalisa Merelli
Disneywold

If you don’t believe in vaccinations, then your doctor might not accept your child as a patient.

Some practitioners want to protect patients who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons. Others feel it’s their responsibility to mark parents’ opposition to vaccination as unacceptable.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides guidelines and documents to help pediatricians deal with parents who refuse to immunize their children. The guidelines include a sample letter a practice refusing to accept unvaccinated kids may share with their parents, which include very direct statements:

By not vaccinating your child you are taking selfish advantage of thousands of others who do vaccinate their children, which decreases the likelihood that your child will contract one of these diseases. We feel such an attitude to be self-centered and unacceptable.

As Eric Ball, a doctor from Southern Orange County Pediatric Associates, told the Los Angeles Times:

“If we allow parents to be in our practice who don’t vaccinate their kids, we’re passively telling them that it’s OK. It’s not OK for those families, the community and for other patients.”

Ball is not alone. Following the measles epidemic that has hit dozens of children in the US, about one-fifth of the doctors surveyed by medical publication MedPage Today refuse taking new patients who decline childhood immunization, and 10% have recently changed their policy toward unvaccinated patients based on other patients’ concerns.

In some cases, doctors will see patients who reject immunization only if it’s on religious grounds. As Aaron Clark, a physician who practices in Ohio told to MedPage Today:

“I have tried numerous times to educate and explain the safety and merits of immunizations and debunk myths and misunderstandings but those conversations rarely result in a change in mind from the parent.”

One of the arguments in favor of doctors still accepting kids of anti-immunization parents is that the visits might inform them about the importance of vaccines. According to a Dartmouth study on effective messages in vaccine promotion (pdf), scientific evidence does little to counter the belief that vaccines are harmful.

It’s time to order furniture for your micro apartment

Not your grandma's murphy bed

Construction of New York City’s much-anticipated first micro apartment complex is finally underway. While the photos show how tiny the units are actually going to be, the experience of living in a space as small as 270 sq. ft. arguably depends less on its footprint and more in the accommodations that enable residents to go about their daily routines with ease and comfort, including a good place to sleep.

Multi-purpose home-furniture lines have been extant since the 19th century—think pull-down murphy beds or the sleeper sofa. IKEA will inevitably offer some space-saving ideas. And Italian manufacturer Clei, which has been tasked with customizing transformable furniture for New York’s micro apartments, offers some solutions that don’t involve tooling with an Allen wrench for hours. While its pieces don’t come cheap, starting at $6,500, the 50+ year old company wins awards and acclaim from the design community for its innovations and craftsmanship.

Clei offers several ways to conceal your bed. Here’s a queen-size bed behind a sectional sofa with reclining seats and storage bins beneath the cushions:

Capsula Mundi, Eco-Friendly Burial Pods That Plant Bodies Under Trees in Egg-Shaped Capsules

by Brian Heater

Capsula

Capsula Mundi is an eco-friendly coffin replacement designed by an Italian company of the same name that houses a body in the fetal position in a biodegradable egg-shaped burial pod beneath a tree variety of their choosing. The idea behind the product is to replace the traditional tombstone-filled cemetery with a “sacred forest.”

Capsula Mundi is planted like a seed in the soil, and on a tree is planted on top of it. The tree is chosen when the person is alive, relatives and friends look after it when death occurs.

The company is currently working to change burial legislation in its home country to allow for the pods.

Einstürzende Neubauten attacks its audience with Molotov cocktails, 1983 | Dangerous Minds

'While there are many historic Neubauten shows I would give a tooth to have attended, their November 19, 1983 gig in Oslo, Norway is not one of them. At that particular fun hootenanny, member Andrew (“N.U.”) Unruh threw Molotov cocktails into the crowd, like as in directly aimed them at human beings in the audience (“with a tight safety margin,” Blixa is careful to add).'

Neubauten at The Cat Club in NYC, 1986, via Seele Brennt

Everyone and her uncle should seize the opportunity to see Einstürzende Neubauten play. Both of the shows I’ve seen were spellbinding. When it comes to jamming on air conditioners, those “cats” can really “blow,” and theirs is a singular beauty; it’s not like you can just go see the tribute band at the county fair instead.

While there are many historic Neubauten shows I would give a tooth to have attended, their November 19, 1983 gig in Oslo, Norway is not one of them. At that particular fun hootenanny, member Andrew (“N.U.”) Unruh threw Molotov cocktails into the crowd, like as in directly aimed them at human beings in the audience (“with a tight safety margin,” Blixa is careful to add). Here are Blixa Bargeld and FM Einheit’s memories of that show from the now scarce band-sanctioned oral history, No Beauty without Danger:

FM EINHEIT In Oslo, Norway, we played a gallery and chased people with Molotov cocktails. They also defended themselves: for instance, by trying to attack us with the ship turbine, which was actually one of our instruments. It was a pretty good riot in Oslo. That was fun.

BLIXA BARGELD For this show Andrew had prepared 20 Molotov cocktails. And Andrew actually made the audience run by throwing Molotov cocktails aimed right at them. They kept trying to escape but he followed them around the hall and, with a tight safety margin, threw burning gasoline bottles at them. That was great. One of the reasons I got kicked out of school was because I had started a fire. My expulsion had already been decided upon anyway, so I didn’t have anything to lose. But I was still the student body president, and tried to enforce my pseudo-democratic rights by decorating a “Schülermitverwaltungsversammlung”, a kind of student council assembly, with a fire bombing - in which no one was hurt - because I was no longer allowed to take part in the assembly. Fire is a medium of transformation. Fire, as an element of our lyrics and as part of the Einstürzende Neubauten stage show, accompanied us for quite a while. It was mainly Andrew who lit fires on stage. And then at some point we had to stop, because we realized that our audience practically expected this incendiarism from us. That’s when it started to get dull. But it was good, as long as we didn’t control it and so long as it wasn’t expected from us. It was normally Andrew’s job to set fires, and it began on his initiative.

Icelandic TV broadcast a couple minutes of that night’s performance of “Sehnsucht.” You can’t see any Molotov cocktails, but the show sure does look like it’s heading in that direction.

Twitter is surveying users about how much they get harassed online

by Adi Robertson

Twitter, as its CEO Dick Costolo has put it, sucks at dealing with harassment and trolls. It's been trying to get better — although its changes have sometimes misfired badly in the past. Right now, though, it's apparently apparently trying to gauge just how big of a problem Twitter abuse really is. Its mobile app is inviting some users (specifically, verified users, as far as we can tell) to take a short survey about their personal experiences and opinions on the platform. It doesn't seem to ask the same questions of everyone, but among other things, it asks how important it is to see interactions, how much they worry about harassment on Twitter, and the overall level of abuse users receive on other services, like YouTube.

This is the first time we've seen this survey, but Adria Richards, who was at the center of a vitriolic fight about tech and gender in 2013 and is still regularly harassed, tweeted about receiving an invitation on February 18th.

Twitter abuse survey

Twitter abuse survey

How helpful is this, exactly? It's a start, and it's certainly not harmful. It comes after a change that (theoretically) makes it harder for suspended users to come back with a new account, requiring them to verify an email address or phone number if they continue to harass. None of it is a panacea, and if stopping harassment in general is hard, it's particularly difficult on Twitter. The features that make Twitter unique and fun — including its acceptance of pseudonyms and its combination of private chat tool and public megaphone — also make it easy to attack someone, get banned, create a new handle, and go back on the offensive.

Twitter has effected some important changes over the past several months, including a simpler form for reporting abuse, but the most useful tools are still unofficial, jury-rigged, and imperfect solutions like block lists. More than anything, this is a way for Twitter to remind its high-profile users that while it might not be even close to a solution, it's at least trying to listen to their problems.

Tesla co-founder says it's electric trucks, not electric cars, that matter

by James Vincent

Electric cars may help save the environment, but when it comes to saving money, electric trucks are where it's at. At least, that's the proposition from Ian Wright, one of the five original founders of Tesla and how head of his own firm, Wrightspeed.

His pitch is simple: companies should retrofit their gas-guzzling trucks to run on his range-extended, electric powertrains. These vehicles are pretty much running throughout the day, says Wright, burning up fuel and money. Converting them means that any savings on running costs and maintenance provided by electric innards are recouped much quicker than with regular cars.

A family car burns 600 gallons of fuel a year — a garbage truck uses 14,000 gallons

"Consumer automobiles don’t burn enough fuel," Wright explains to Quartz. "Family cars burn about 600 gallons a year. If you make that [car] electric you are going to add $15,000, at least, to the cost of that car and maybe only save $1,500 [in fuel]. So maybe a 10-year payback. If you you go to garbage trucks they are burning maybe 14,000 gallons a year, so you can save $35,000 in fuel and $20,000 in maintenance."

Wrightspeed's pitch is already attracting business, with the company securing its first significant deal with FedEx last year to convert 25 delivery trucks. Wright has said that both delivery trucks and garbage trucks make ideal candidates for his powertrains as not only are the vehicles in constant use, but their frequent braking can be used to generate more power for the electric batteries. An additional onboard microturbine that runs on diesel or different types of gas means the trucks will never run out of juice.

Wright says that what Tesla has done to improve the public image of the electric vehicle is "totally awesome," but he thinks that it's his technology that will actually lead to the adoption of more electric vehicles.

"The systems are not cheap," he tells Fast Company, "but we save enough fuel and enough maintenance that they pay for themselves in a short enough time that it becomes a no brainer. A CFO will look at this and say, 'Yeah, there's a short enough payback, and we're going to save so much money after that—and take away our emissions problems off the table. Then it becomes a compelling thing."

1,500 applied for that penguin post office job in Antarctica

by Hanna Kozlowska
Skills required: "dodging penguins."

Turns out that there are plenty of people who want to spend five months in the bitter cold, sleeping little, isolated from the world, and are “happy not to shower for up to a month, live in close proximity to three people and 2,000 smelly penguins for five months.”

In the two weeks since February 16,  1,500 people have applied for four positions—that’s 375 applicants per spot—to be an assistant at the southernmost post office in the world in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. In 2014, the total number of applicants was a whopping 82. Inquiries skyrocketed after a documentary about the outpost aired on the BBC and PBS, according to the organization that runs it, the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

In addition to the cold and stinky conditions, the job is not an easy one. The assistants have to run the base’s museum and shop, monitor the 2,000 gentoo penguins that hang around, assist the 18,000 visitors to the island and handle the 70,000 letters that tourists post for that Antarctica postmark.

Yes, that’s right, even in the digital age, people still love quirky postmarks. Other popular addresses include Bethlehem, Connecticut, which processes 200,000 additional pieces of mail between Thanksgiving and December 26, and Bridal Veil, Oregon, an abandoned town that handles 150,000 envelopes for wedding invitations or “save-the-dates” between March and August.

New Logo for City of Minneapolis done In-house

"Minneapolis, officially the City of Minneapolis, is the county seat of Hennepin County, and larger of the Twin Cities, the 14th-largest metropolitan area in the United States, containing approximately 3.8 million residents. As of 2013, Minneapolis is the largest city in the state of Minnesota and 46th-largest in the United States with 400,070 residents. Minneapolis and Saint Paul anchor the second-largest economic center in the American Midwest, behind Chicago." (Wikipedia)

Design by: In-house

Opinion/Notes: I liked the geometry of the previous sailboats and how they intersected and connected but it wasn't necessarily the best drawing of sailboats ever. Even less so the new drawing, which drops one of the sailboats and goes for a curvier, more resort-like rendering. It's not terrible, it's just generic. So is the typography, which gets worse in the "City of Lakes" nickname where city staff seems like they gave up choosing something interesting. The new logo is still pending city approval.

Star Tribune news story

Select Quote: A component of the identity package is an evolution of the City logo that modernizes the look and improves usability issues with the current logo. It is 4-color and prominently features the word "Minneapolis," accompanied by the tagline "City of Lakes" and a small, refreshed sailboat image on the top right edge. The more prominent use of the word "Minneapolis" means the logo will reproduce better at a range of sizes, allowing the word to be read clearly regardless of the scale. Eliminating the thin lines in the current version of the logo will also make it more suitable for use in digital environments.

New Study Debunks Myths of NYCs LGBT Youth Who Trade Sex For Survival

by Jamilah King

'Homophobia contributed not only to young people becoming homeless, but was also identified as a huge barrier in their access to social services in New York City.'

New Study Debunks Myths of NYC's LGBT Youth Who Trade Sex For Survival

A new study released this week by the Urban Institute paints one of the more in-depth pictures of LGBT youth in New York City who trade sex for survival. The report is the first in a series to present findings based on in-depth interviews with nearly 300 young people whose median age was 19. And so far, those findings are debunking some of the more commonly held myths surrounding who does sex work.

Among the study's initial findings is that young men were just as likely, if not more, to trade sex for survival. In total, of the study's nearly 300 participants, 54 percent were men, 42 percent were women and 4 percent identified as transgender. Those findings fly in the face of the more commonly held assumptions that young women are far more likely than young men to trade sex for food, shelter or basic necessities.

But exactly how those young people enter the sex trade differs based on their gender. Cisgender women -- those whose gender identities align with how they were assigned at birth -- were less likely to report trading sex on their own. In total, 11 percent of cisgender women reported first trading sex on their own, compared with 24 percent of men. Similarly, transgender women were least likely to indicate initially trading sex on their own, according to researchers. What that means is cisgender and transgender women were more likely to be recruited into the commercial sex trade by an exploiter.

Of the nearly 300 participants in the study who identified as LGBT, young men who sleep with men (YMSM) or young women who sleep with women (YWSW):

  • The vast majority were of color: 37 percent identified as black, 22 percent identified as Latino and 30 percent identified as more than one race.
  • Homelessness is one of the most common drivers of youth engagement in survival sex.
  • Homophobia contributed not only to young people becoming homeless, but was also identified as a huge barrier in their access to social services in New York City.

The record industry will make Friday the standard release day for all albums

by Lizzie Plaugic

The record industry will adopt Friday as the global album release day, Billboard reports. The decision will eliminate the current standard, in which release dates are divided by country (it's Tuesday in the US and Monday in the UK).

It's all because of piracy and Beyoncé

"[Music fans] want music when it's available on the internet — not when it's ready to be released in their country," International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) head Frances Moore told Billboard. "An aligned global release day puts an end to the frustration of not being able to access releases in their country when the music is available in another country." Of course, for those who don't care about legality, so does the internet.

Pushback to the decision has been strong. The industry has been considering Friday as the global release day for months now, and criticism has not slowed with the official decision. Beggars Group founder Martin Mills said earlier this week that a global release day may further marginalize unknown artists already struggling to sell albums. Rich Bengloff, head of the American Association of Independent Music, said in a statement that there are "a number of business hurdles that make Fridays less optimal for the United States marketplace, and independents in particular."

Billboard reports that the industry settled on Friday in part because of piracy and Beyoncé. Australia and Germany have both adopted a Friday release date, which the recording industry says has spurred more aggressive digital piracy. Albums are pirated immediately after release, which means sales may suffer in countries with Monday and Tuesday release dates. Beyoncé's massively popular 2013 self-titled surprise album was released on a Friday. So was Drake's recent record-breaking mixtape, If You're Reading This, It's Too Late.

The shift will take place this summer

This ignores the fact that albums often leak before their physical release, and that most musicians are not Beyoncé, whose album-selling power is hard to match. Beyond a statement from IFPI that claims people like to listen to new music on Fridays, it's unclear if there is actually any evidence that a Friday release date will boost record sales.

The shift will reportedly take place this summer.

They each paid for the other to have the tattoo done as a gift. Adam received his tattoo as a Christmas present, and Tanya was given hers for her 40th birthday.

The dark and violent Power/Rangers short film watched by millions was pulled from YouTube yesterday in response to a copyright claim from a subsidiary of Saban, which owns the rights to Power Rangers. The short film, which was distributed for free and made without permission of Saban, was previously pulled from Vimeo. "To all the viewers that enjoyed this film, I consider this an outright infringement on freedom of expression and individualism," Power/Rangers producer Adi Shankar says in a statement responding to the latest takedown. Shankar notes that the video is still available to watch on Facebook. He personally thanks Mark Zuckerberg for that.

"This film is a homage to the original creators of the Power Rangers."

Power/Rangers may have been destined to play out this way. As Polygon notes in a look at the legal issues surrounding fan films, the fact that Shankar isn't profiting off of this short and didn't use any existing footage doesn't simply allow him to get around Saban's copyright. The characters and names used in Power/Rangers belong to Saban, and Shankar may have to prove that his short is commenting on the franchise in some way to make fair use of it. Whether Power/Rangers is doing that is, certainly, questionable. It's nothing like the Power Rangers you remember, but dark, violent adaptations of existing properties aren't exactly unusual, either.

Shankar argues that what he's created is, in fact, a parody. "This film is a homage to the original creators of the Power Rangers, and a parody of a television series we all grew up loving," he says. That's about all of the detail that Shankar goes into, but if Saban pushes this further — and if Shankar really wants to keep this up for the world to see — someone is going to have to elaborate on his argument.

For now, you can't blame YouTube and Vimeo for not listening. Deadline points out that both sites are just following the rules of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act: when they receive a takedown request, they pull the video to avoid liability; the uploader is welcome to dispute the claim, but it may mean going to court. That means, while the video is up on Facebook for now, that could be Saban's next stop, and Shankar won't be able to do much about it. At that point, it'll be up to the two sides to find a resolution.

"It’s a terrible precedent to set."

"Films like my Power/Rangers 'Bootleg' are vital expressions of creativity in our troubled world," Shankar says. "If we suppress this creativity and become passive participants in the consumption of the culture we live in, we implicitly allow a dangerous precedent to be set for the future of the internet." Notably, Shankar has made three other "bootleg" shorts, all of which remain online.

Shankar intends to fight Saban's takedown requests, according to Deadline. "It’s fair use and there are numerous fans films on YouTube," Ashwant Akula Venkatram, Shankar's attorney, tells Deadline. "It’s a terrible precedent to set."

Joseph Kahn, the short film's director, also calls this "a huge blow for fandom" and a poor decision on Saban's part. "I hope they come to an awareness of how modern pop culture works," he tells Deadline. "The audience will pay for the franchise, but they want to play with it as well." Kahn argues that companies can no longer dictate what people watch and how they watch it. "If you want the support of the modern fandom," he says, "you need to let them participate."
