Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is reinventing Frankenstein

by Kwame Opam

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is stepping deeper into the world of Gothic horror with his new miniseries, Frankenstein Underground. Fans of Mignola’s particular breed of monster should be excited; as an writer and artist, Mignola has been penning stories about demons and paranormal entities at Dark Horse Comics for more than 20 years. Hellboy, which follows the misadventures of a gun-toting half-demon in the mid-20th century, got its start in 1994 before spawning two cult classic movies directed by modern-day master of horror Guillermo del Toro.

Frankenstein’s monster — the same Mary Shelley unleashed onto the world in 1814 — is now going to have to find his way in the Mignolaverse. After last being seen facing off against Hellboy in a Mexican luchador match, the creature is now lost and alone on a journey that takes him literally underground, as he faces the kind of ancient races you might see in Burrough’s At the Earth’s Core or Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. I sat down with Mignola to talk about the book, which just hit stores today, and the monster’s place in pop culture.

This is Frankenstein At the Earth's Core

Starting just generally, what is Frankenstein Underground about?

It’s kinda started out as, What if I took the Frankenstein monster and threw him into a Edgar Rice Burroughs sort of underground series. Just banging around monsters and subhuman underground people. And once I started digging around in the plot, and started bringing in more of the elements from the Hellboy universe, then the book took on a really different shape.

You introduced the monster in Hellboy: House of the Living Dead. This is going to be an extension of that?

It departs from Hellboy entirely. I mean, Hellboy appears in one panel in a flashback, but House of the Living Dead took place in Mexico, so it’s just picking up [with] that monster in Mexico, probably just a few weeks after that graphic novel took place. And then the book is entirely about Frankenstein and things happen that drop him into this underground world. It touches on and develops certain ideas that are in Hellboy and the DPRD [Department for Paranormal Research and Defense] books as far as this history of these prehistoric civilizations, and a lot of the stuff I had going on with the various Victorian characters. It fleshes out some of the history of the Hellboy world, but stands entirely on its own.

It fleshes out the Hellboy world, but stands entirely on its own

How are you balancing Mary Shelley’s original work with your own style?

Well, that was a trick. I didn’t realize it was actually the Frankenstein monster [at first], so there was no attempt at all to make him like the Mary Shelley character. In fact, the Frankenstein monster that’s in my head is always the Boris Karloff Frankenstein. So the biggest trick with this book was to take this kind of dumb brute monster I’d started with in House of the Living Dead and kind of rationalize how the Mary Shelley character could have become this character. And then really just finding my own voice for the character, which is not as eloquent as Mary Shelley, but a little bit more conversational than the Karloff Frankenstein. I definitely had to find my own version of this character, even though I reference the Shelley novel and I think I’m faithful to the Shelley novel. There are a couple of scenes that are flashbacks to the Shelley novel, so it’s rooted in the Shelley novel. But the whole point of this book is not really to chew over who the monster is or where he’s come from. It’s to throw him into this particular story, and who he is kind of colors his reactions to things, but his origins [aren’t] the focus of the book.

So he’s striking a balance between the more brutish Karloff version and the poetic Shelley version.

Yeah, he’s definitely more thoughtful than the monster was in the first Karloff film, but Karloff, in Bride of Frankenstein, is a little bit more thoughtful. He’s definitely sadder. He speaks. And that’s the Karloff Frankenstein that’s always in my head. My version of Frankenstein is extremely sad. He feels terrible about a lot of stuff he’s done. He’s got some justifiable anger from the way he’s been treated, which is, I think, all very neatly in Bride of Frankenstein. It wasn’t that big a stretch to say the Shelley character, which is from 1816… if the monster has been around for that long, and been abused and beaten and hunted and blah blah blah, after all these years, by 1956, he’s kind of run down and brutish and doesn’t talk very much. As I script this series, I find as he gets further into this book, he does speak a little bit more. He does articulate more. But for the most part, at least in the early part of the book, he’s not a dumb brute, but he’s not used to having a conversation.

Frankenstein

Frankenstein

The monster has been abused and beaten for more than a century

For you as a writer, why Frankenstein in particular? You obviously have a very deep love for the Universal Monsters.

Writing House of the Living Dead, that book was just a parade of different monsters. It’s got the Frankenstein Monster, it’s got a vampire, it’s got some female vampires, it’s got a hunchback, it’s got a Wolfman. It was such a nod to those old Universal movies, like House of Dracula and House of Frankenstein. I needed to have a Frankenstein-type creature in there. The reanimated corpse with the bolts. It’s such an iconic horror image. I needed him in there. But, not until I wrote the back cover copy for the book did I name it the Frankenstein monster. I never would have intentionally said, "Oh now I’m gonna use the Frankenstein monster." It’s just I had this monster who could be Frankenstein, and when it came to writing the back cover copy, the funniest phrase was "...and the Frankenstein Monster!" So, that’s how I ended up having my own version. But once you have him, you kind of file him away and go, "Yeah, that’s one of the dozen different things that we could expand on someday." It’s always good to have six or seven of these different projects that you could do. The original idea was actually to do a series of books about him exploring around underground, and then once I brought this other stuff into it, it really did turn into just one book. There’s no plan to do a second volume. I don’t want to put a number on the spine. It doesn’t mean we couldn’t do another one, but it felt like a one book story.

Do you think it’s timely to come out with something like this now, with I, Frankenstein and Dracula Untold both coming out last year?

I mean, I would think anytime’s a good time for the Frankenstein monster. It’s always something in the works. That didn’t influence me, as far as the timing of the book. If it’s good timing, that’s great. I’ve never looked at what current trends are for why I do stuff. For me, the Frankenstein monster is so timeless, and there’s never a time when people don’t know who that character is. If it helps, that’s great. I will say I have I had not seen the TV series Penny Dreadful before I started the book. And when I watched that show, I realized I probably would not have done this Frankenstein book, because that was such a beautiful handling of the Mary Shelley-type Frankenstein monster that I was would have been intimidated to go anywhere near this character. Fortunately, the series was already half done when I watched Penny Dreadful, so it was too late to put on the brakes.

Frankenstein Underground is now available.

Starbucks will start making home deliveries later this year

by Chris Welch

good. you can close all the retail locations down now, thanks

In case there's somehow not a Starbucks within walking distance of your office or city apartment, delivery specialist Postmates will soon start bringing the coffee maker's drinks and food directly to your door. It's a legitimate collaboration between the two brands; customers will place orders for their desired beverage or snack through the Starbucks app, and then simply select the option to have it delivered by Postmates.

Everything's handled through Starbucks' hugely popular app — which can also be used to pay in stores — so it sounds like a pretty seamless arrangement. Postmates gains some important exposure, even if only for a brief moment when the delivery person shows up. Both companies are referring to this as just a pilot for now, and deliveries will kick off in Seattle sometime in the second half of this year. If all goes well, maybe Starbucks and Postmates will expand deliveries to other cities. That, or you could just go walk around the corner.

Classic FPS Descent to be rebooted by Star Citizen alums

by Lee Hutchinson
firehose

Star Citizen is never coming out and it already has developer alumni who will crowdfund, develop, and launch a game before Star Citizen is out

The last time we checked in with Eric "Wingman" Peterson was August of 2014, where he was running Cloud Imperium Games’ Austin office and overseeing development on Star Citizen’s persistent universe. However, just a few months after that, Peterson left Cloud Imperium to develop his own game: a reboot of the mid-'90s first-person shooter game Descent.

Peterson has formed Descendent Studios, hired a development staff, and is currently overseeing a Kickstarter to pull together a minimum of $600,000 to finance development of the game, which is titled Descent Underground. Critically, Descent Underground has something that previous attempts to resurrect the Descent franchise have lacked: a licensing agreement with IP-holder Interplay.

Kickstarter teaser for Descent Underground, formerly code-named "Ships That Fight Underground."

Old name, new presentation

Descent was published by Interplay more than 20 years ago, in 1994. The first-person shooter developed by Parallax Software had players zipping around underground in a series of cavernous (and sometimes claustrophobic) mines filled with mad killer robots. Players navigated the underground environment in a Pyro GX spacecraft, which led to the game’s main selling point: it wasn’t just a regular FPS, but one which offered "six degrees of freedom." In other words, you could move in any direction (X, Y, and Z) and turn in any direction (roll, pitch, yaw).

Newswire: The Muppets are coming back to TV, sort of

by Alex McCown

It appears that our days of grappling with anthropomorphized pieces of fabric are not yet over as Collider reports that the felt abominations known as Muppets will once more be a regular presence on your TV screen. (“Don’t even think about trying to call the characters on Sesame Street ‘Muppets,’” a grizzled old fan of the original series thinks. “We’re talking real-deal Muppets here, not some bullshit Elmo-come-lately.”) Disney is bringing a short-form series to the Disney Junior channel, called Muppets Moments, starting Friday, April 3.

Despite the obvious assumption that a series of shorts about inanimate, glued-together felt coming to life and teaching children to do stuff would be correctly labelled “horror” television, the show will supposedly be quite mild. Disney describes it as “a series of amusing conversations between Muppets and young kids about everyday topics including ‘apologies,’ ‘favorite foods’ and ‘manners.’” The company doesn’t ...

Marvel Ending 33 Comics Post-Secret Wars, Including Captain Marvel, Thor, And Angela: Asgard’s Assassin - WHAT CAPTAIN MARVEL NO STAY DON'T GO

by Sam Maggs
firehose

'So… Captain Marvel and Thor are ending, but not ending, probably, but rebooting, but maybe after a several-month hiatus? Okay. Great. Gotcha.'

captain-marvel-1-featured

Marvel is merging all of its universes into one big mish-mash called Battleworld in this May’s Secret Wars event – but it looks like not all current comics are going to make it out the other end alive, including several of our current faves. Sad. Face.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Marvel’s SVP of Sales and Marketing David Gabriel said this big “616 finale” (616 being Marvel’s current main canonical universe) will be “ending th[e]se stories and the characters as you knew them – for now!” So all hope is not lost for the following titles – but he did list 33 books that will end in one form or another after Secret Wars.

Here’s the whole shebang in alphabetical order, and we’ve bolded the lady-led titles:

  • All-New Captain America
  • All-New Ghost Rider
  • All-New X-Men
  • Amazing Spider-Man
  • Amazing X-Men
  • Angela: Asgard’s Assassin
  • Avengers
  • Avengers World
  • Captain Marvel
  • Cyclops
  • Deadpool
  • Elektra
  • Fantastic Four
  • Guardians 3000
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Hulk
  • Inhuman
  • Iron Fist: The Living Weapon
  • Legendary Star-Lord
  • Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man
  • New Avengers
  • Nightcrawler
  • Nova
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Secret Avengers
  • Spider-Man & The X-Men
  • Spider-Man 2099
  • Storm
  • Superior Iron Man
  • Thor
  • Uncanny X-Men
  • Wolverines
  • X-Men

Now, we know that Thor is selling incredibly well, and that Captain Marvel has a movie coming out, so I’m not too worried about whether or not we’ll see them again – it’s likely they’ll just take a new form or start big new arcs after the event ends. But for older (the all-female X-Men) or lesser-known titles (A: AA), I am a bit concerned about their immediate future. Gabriel did say that Marvel originally wanted to end/re-start all of their titles post-Secret Wars for a “fresh start,” but that it just wasn’t realistic with the number of comics they’re publishing. That’s really unfortunate, because I think it ultimately would have made a lot more sense than what they’re doing now.

What I find interesting is the AU titles aren’t listed as “ending” post-Battleworld; only these 616 titles are getting “finales.” Books like Spider-Gwen will be “deal[ing] with it in their own ways.” But how does that even work, given that essentially all of Marvel’s titles will be given a soft reset once Secret Wars ends? What makes these titles’ reboots more “final” than the rest of Marvel’s books?

Gabriel clarified (?) by saying, “Some [titles] may take a hiatus for a month or two (something the industry is accustomed to); some will reach their ’616 finale;’ some become Battleworld transformed; and still others… well we’ll get to those!”

So… Captain Marvel and Thor are ending, but not ending, probably, but rebooting, but maybe after a several-month hiatus? Okay. Great. Gotcha.

What do you make of this news, folks?

On #Occupotty And The Privilege Of Passing

by Marcy Cook
firehose

'But I see these perfectly passing men and women taking selfies in restrooms and I want to yell about how unfair it is. They won’t be hassled in restrooms anyway, because they pass. I don’t think it is likely that a cis man in a restroom is going to approach a guy with a beard and say “Hey, I like your bushy beard and all, but I suspect you are actually female and thus I am compelled to beat you up now for the sake of the patriarchy.” The same goes for perfectly passing trans women. It’s not the small percentage of trans people that pass that have the majority of issues in public spaces.'

Michael-Hughes-640x320

I’ve always been on the edge of acceptability. When I was young and pretending to be cisgender, I was bullied, and it pushed me into the world of computer and console gaming, where I could shut out a lot of the world. (Thank you ZX Spectrum 48k, your bouncy rubber keyboard helped me a lot.) Years later, me pretending to be cis went out the window. I was older when I started to transition; this is the standard pattern for transgender women – or at least it was.

The world of transition has changed, and thanks to easier access to information and more educated and accepting doctors, the age at which people transition is consistently trending downwards, most exceptionally in the case of trans women. This is good, as people get the support, care and treatment they need earlier in life. It will also, hopefully, help bring down the high suicide rate among trans youth and allow more people to be helped before puberty hits. Transition post-puberty is a lottery – and one I lost.

“Passing” is when you cannot be mistaken for anything other than the gender you are presenting as. A passing trans guy can go to the restroom and pee without hassle from cis men. A passing trans woman could do likewise without hassle from cis women. Yes, and just like that, we’re back to discussing the cisgender obsession with urination. I can only imagine that the lawmakers of Canada and the USA are really into wet fetishes with the amount of legal time that gets spent on this issue, when you consider everything else that is going on in the world.

Within transgender culture, there are the haves and have nots; I’m on the edge of transgender culture, as I don’t pass, and it matters to me. I’d need to make a confession regarding my response to the trans restroom trend #occupotty: I’m jealous, ridiculous, depressive, whiny, angry and selfish. I think the transgender restroom selfie idea is great; it will actually influence lawmakers who are ignorant of transgender topics and only see the world as binary male/female. Those that declare genitals and chromosomes as the only sex markers that matter (even though in nature neither genitals or chromosomes are binary) are ignorant. “Let’s not let pesky science get in the way, hoist those pitchforks! Seriously Nigel, hoist the pitchfork higher or you’ll stab Steven. Oh, Nigel.”

But I see these perfectly passing men and women taking selfies in restrooms and I want to yell about how unfair it is. It’s not the small percentage of trans people that pass that have the majority of issues in public spaces.

After all, passing is called “going stealth” for a reason. The US didn’t invent the Stealth Bomber and say “You know what this needs? More cow-bell.” People who can be “stealth” are in a lot less danger as they navigate cis spaces. It’s still dangerous, of course, and getting outed can have life-threatening consequences; but it’s not the same experience as those whom Gandalf stopped from passing. Some people don’t want to pass; others are unable to take HRT and cannot pass; yet more of us take HRT and still won’t pass. At some point we need to address the societal pressure to appear cisgender.

When I read the online suicide notes, or the cries for help of transgender people, they have some commonalities. One of the threads I’ve seen time and time again is the confession regarding the fear of transitioning; the fear of not passing. They are afraid that they won’t be perfect cis men or women; so afraid that they either kill themselves or won’t transition rather than potentially not pass. Cisgender society demands that trans people pass so that we fit in and aren’t different.

Let’s be clear: I support #occupotty, but I’m very conflicted. The vast majority of transgender people do not pass, and that’s just fine. What we need is some representation; we need to be included in the debate. As a trans woman that does not pass, I can cause issues when I go into a women’s restroom. Guess what? I cause issues when I go into the men’s, too, and that’s way more dangerous for me. So what am I supposed to do? Just not pee and wait? That in itself can lead to serious health issues.

What trans people that don’t pass need is more acceptance from cisgender society, and #occupotty is unintentionally reinforcing the notion that you need look cisgender to use a public restroom; it is promoting the idea that you need to pass to use the restroom that matches your gender identity. This is not going to help me, nor is it going to help the vast majority of trans people that don’t pass to feel any safer in a restroom.

“Okay then, so why don’t you post selfies in a restroom if you don’t pass?” Why thanks, internal troll voice, I was just getting to that.

We don’t we see photos of non-passing trans people in campaigns or online because it’s not what cisgender society wants to see, and it opens ourselves up to mockery and potentially physical danger. Neither option appeals to me; I don’t post images of myself online for a reason. If you don’t meet the “acceptable cisgender level of passing,” you can expect very personal abuse. Decades of the media telling us we’re the joke, the medical profession initially labelling us as mentally ill, the police abusing us and the courts allowing men to kill us using the “panic defence” – all of this has made transgender people careful. Those who pass blaze the way for the majority that don’t; we need them, but they are a double-edged sword.

I’d like to end this with a solution that wraps all of this up into a pithy lesson like a ’90s sitcom, but that’s not going to happen. I’m sorry, but an easy solution to this issue just doesn’t exist. Cisgender society needs to be more accepting and understanding. Trans people need to use restrooms. Not everyone fits into the gender binary, or even wants to, and that doesn’t harm anyone – so lets all stop pretending it does.

Marcy (@marcyjcook) is an immigrant trans woman and writer. This includes Transcanuck.com, a website dedicated to informing and helping trans Canadians. She also has a nerd job, too many cats, is a part time volunteer sex educator and has an ongoing sordid love affair with Lego. Those last two are not related… probably.

[UPDATED] Writer Valerie D’Orazio Calls Out Marvel’s New X-Men Writer Chris Sims for Online Harassment - This isn't about The Comics Industry - it's about human decency.

TRIGGER ALERT: online harassment, abuse, trauma

Comics fans were in for a shock yesterday as comics writer, Valerie D’Orazio, took to Twitter reacting to the news that Comics Alliance writer Chris Sims would be writing his first Marvel book, X-Men ’92 (which I was actually looking forward to, before this situation put a sour taste in my mouth). The reason? The online harassment Sims directed at her via his forums over the course of three years.

It started with this tweet:

So. I just found out that the misogynist POS who was responsible for ringleading harassment against me online is writing the X-Men.

— Valerie D’Orazio (@ValerieDOrazio) March 17, 2015

It only got more heated from there. D’Orazio later composed her thoughts into a blog post that explained her reaction in more detail:

I’ve been looking at the [image of the controversial Batgirl variant cover] on all my social media ALL day. It has been deeply triggering for me to see this image, but I’ve figured that I have no right to discuss this because blah blah blah blah blah.

The word “triggering” means that it makes me occasionally—and quite suddenly—flash back to previous instances of deep trauma. Instances where I have felt victimized and scared.

I have PTSD—post-traumatic stress disorder. I have specifically been diagnosed with it because of cyberbullying that I experienced between 2007-2010.

One of the effects of PTSD, on me, is that if I read about another woman being cyberbullied or harassed, I get extremely upset. My blood pressure rises, my adrenaline shoots up, I sweat, and I start to feel scared and anxious. Because I also have heart issues, this is rather a dangerous state for me to be in o a regular basis. That is why, in 2010, I quit regular blogging on comic book related topics.

I had several cyberbullies during that three-year span, but Chris Sims was one of the worst. Not so much for what he said about me directly, but because he had a popular forum from which to direct harassment to me by many other people.

I never could figure out what I did to Chris personally to be singled out for this type of treatment. But week after week, he would have posts focused on me in which he would be a ringleader for others, who would then go off and harass me personally via my blog, social media, and emails.

This hit its peak when it was announced that I was to write a one-shot for The Punisher. Apparently Chris thought this was the wrong choice, and he made his opinions clear.

8:00 in the morning the issue was to hit stands, Marvel Comics called me to warn that there was a “harassing” atmosphere on the internet regarding my comic. They told me to “be careful.” Over the next week I received constant harassment and threats. The result was that, among other things, I refused to go to comic book conventions or other events in which somebody might know I would be at a certain time—because I believed I would be hurt or even killed.

While at that point the highly-influential Sims had pulled back from the harassment—me at one point engaging in a “cross-blog” interview in the hopes that if he “liked” me, the harassment might stop—the damage was clearly done.

I have spent many hours in therapy dealing with the fallout from cyberbullying. I have considered committing suicide, and turned to drinking as a way to medicate my anxiety. I now still struggle with the effects from this bullying.

Sims very recently sent my husband an email that read:

“I saw what you said to that dude yesterday, and just felt awful. You, and Valerie, have a very good reason to throw me under the bus, and you have always treated me with way more respect than I deserve. I was a complete asshole to Val, and by extension to you, and while in my head I thought I was keeping it about the work rather than being personal, I know I stepped over the line more than once. I was completely the bad guy, and once I realized that, I stopped, and the only reason I haven’t reached out to apologize is because I know that both of you (rightly) think I’m a real jerk, and I didn’t want to try to insert myself into your lives because I suddenly realized I was being a dickhead about it.”

A lot of interesting things to unpack here.
#1, it really seems like he is apologizing to my husband—who I guess is actually worth something, as a man—than me.
#2, he refers to a potential exposure of what he did as me and my husband “throwing him under the bus.” Note how in his phraseology, HE is the victim here, not me…he is the warm body being thrown under a vehicle.
#3 It is highly suspect that he has finally decided to apologize for his actions right on the heels of him being announced as the writer of an X-Men comic.

The irony that Marvel hired the man who ring-led the harassment against me over my Punisher comic is not lost on me. Neither is the omni-present victimized crying Batgirl image I’ve been seeing all day today…or the fact that Sims had once left a message on my blog that said “Are you going to CRY, little girl?”

I think Sims totally has the right to write his X-Men comic, which apparently is set in the “Golden Age” of the 1990s—this is the exact period of time I STOPPED reading the X-Men and began to notice a distinct “women not allowed” vibe in comics. For a living I help others tell their unique stories in comic book form—and every story is important.
Actually, I feel quite relieved that this all allowed me to finally talk about the trauma I have experienced; I literally feel much better having done it.

But one thing still bothers me…

Chris, you said you thought I was the WORST person to write the Punisher.

But I have to disagree. Frank Castle is one hard-ass stubborn Italian who doesn’t take shit from NOBODY. And he had a pretty good memory, too. Who knows? Maybe the experience, in the end, made me a stronger person.

The Mary Sue reached out to D’Orazio for clarification, and to ask her why she felt the need to speak out about this. She said:

Every time I get into this, it is really “triggering” to me. But the fact is, I know a number of talented young comic book female writers and artists…and when I think about them potentially going through this stuff, it horrifies me. For example, I know an incredibly talented female writer who writes more in a genre/style that men usually write in. I picture her trying to do something like the Punisher one-shot I did, and getting all this shit, and it makes me sick.

It’s really not about me or Chris Sims, in the end. It’s about opening up this dialogue and making sure other women don’t go through what I went through. Because once you’ve become a target and are getting all the threatening and insulting emails and social media…that’s a lot. Let’s just prevent this from happening.

Honestly…I felt, for several years, that if I was a “good girl” in comics, and didn’t act openly feminist, I would get less harassment. And I did. But it cost me in terms of my peace of mind.

I’m done with all that. Protect these young women who are comic fans, and who want to work in this industry.

I asked her if she thinks it was a mistake for Marvel to hire a writer who had done what Sims did, and she said, “Actually, I feel *not* hiring him at this point will only add to the ‘women ruin it for comics’ hysteria at this point, where complaining about a particular cover is equated to the Taliban, Charlie Hebdo, and Fredric Wertham. I work as a freelance editor where I enable people outside of comics to tell their stories through the comic book medium. Every story is important.”

She then referred to a quote from a blog post she’d written earlier that day – before hearing about the Sims/X-Men news – and said that it applied here as well:

If you’re among the comic professionals scapegoating the so-called “vocal minority” on the Internet because of various decisions by DC and Marvel to become more diverse and inclusive—know that you are helping feed into the harassment and even threats of violence against females online. As such, I will not buy your books or support your work in any way, and I won’t support any publisher you are strongly connected to.

It’s clear where D’Orazio is coming from, and what her stance is on all of this. But I wondered, since Marvel recently announced Sims’ book, if they had anything to say about any of this in relation to one of their newest hires. Sadly, as of this writing, all we’ve received from Marvel is a “no comment,” which is disappointing to say the least.

sims

With no word from Marvel, I decided to go directly to the other side in all this. Sims, too, posted on his blog about the situation yesterday:

If you’ve been reading my work for long enough, then you probably remember that I had what I used to refer to as a “feud” with Valerie D’Orazio a few years ago. That’s the wrong word, since it was more one-sided than anything else, and I was in no uncertain terms the aggressor and a complete jerk.

I was needlessly harsh about her comics work, I left jerky comments on her site, I talked trash here and elsewhere, and while in my head I justified it as as purely being critical of her writing, I know I stepped over the line into making it a personal attack more than once. What I said is a matter of public record, and frankly, my intentions at the time don’t change what I actually did. At best, I was making someone’s life harder when I had no reason to, and at worst I was giving others a reason to do the same that went far beyond just me being an asshole and contributed to and validated the harassment of both Ms. D’Orazio and of women in general. When I finally realized that, long after I should’ve, I stopped, and I’ve tried to be better going forward.

I’ve never apologized for it, for the simple reason that I don’t think I have the right to insert myself back into someone’s life when I’ve treated them as poorly as I did to her, but I regret what I did. This is not a plea for forgiveness, or a clean slate. If what I did changes how you feel about me and my work, that’s completely understandable; I was wrong, and in every way the bad guy.

In the few interactions that I’ve had with Ms. D’Orazio, she has treated me far better than I would have if the situation was reversed.

Well, at least he addressed the not reaching out to apologize directly to her issue. Though, he’s not really apologizing to her here, either. It seems like he’s apologizing more to his fans, playing up how horribly he treated D’Orazio in order to make his redemption seem that much more epic in order to ingratiate himself to what he hopes will be his future comics readership.

We also reached out to Sims for clarification and additional comment as well, because I wanted to see if what he wrote on his blog really was the end of it as far as he was concerned. Had he ever tried to reach out before someone commented on his treatment of D’Orazio on Twitter in relation to his upcoming X-Men title? Here’s what he had to say:

As for why now: When I realized that I was being a jerk, and that Ms. D’Orazio was mostly ignoring me, I stopped and I didn’t feel like I should press the issue, even with an apology. She was clearly trying to disengage with me, I didn’t want to push further and make things worse than they already were. I haven’t tried to make contact with her personally for the same reason.

The reason I’m doing it now is because recent events have made it clear that it’s something that I’m responsible for owning and addressing publicly. I’ve regretted what I did for a while, but acknowledging that I was in the wrong is a lot more important than just wishing I hadn’t done it.

That’s very true. Acknowledging wrong is extremely important. But just as the phrasing of his blog apology is interesting, so too is his phrasing in his email to me. He never says that he tried to apologize and she wouldn’t hear it – simply that he realized he was being a jerk, and she was ignoring him.

Of course, she was ignoring him. He’d been harassing her for years! That’s not the point.

The point is, if you know you’ve wronged someone and you really want to make it right, before you start apologizing to their husbands, or to your readership, you should really start by apologizing to them. You do what you need to do. And if you apologize to them, and nothing, well then you move on and do what you want. But the “I didn’t want to push” argument doesn’t really hold up when there was no effort made in the first place. From what I can gather, there was nothing to push.

In my conversation with D’Orazio, she said, “From what I understand, he saw a tweet by somebody yesterday or the day before linking him to harassment of me–in relation to the X-Men announcement–and sent my husband the initial email.”

So, it all comes down to sales and money, and this is what makes Marvel’s “no comment” stance particularly frustrating, as Marvel seems to have a history of laying the burden of harassment at the feet of the victim with advice like this…

…”sorry, but it looks like you’re going to get a lot of harassment for your book. You should lay low for awhile.”

— Valerie D’Orazio (@ValerieDOrazio) March 17, 2015

…all the while continuing to employ creators like Brian Wood, who have a long history of accusations of harassing women. And it isn’t only Marvel. Harassers are employed at DC, too. It’s time for publishers to realize that not only do they have to do more to hire female creators, but they should be doing everything in their power to ensure that – as Marvel employees – they are able to do their work in a safe environment. People like Chris Sims make the comics industry unsafe. Not just for female creators, but for fans as well. Anyone who is guilty of this…

I’ve got proof of him harassing me on my own blog and then commenting, “you gonna CRY little girl?” — Valerie D’Orazio (@ValerieDOrazio) March 17, 2015

…should be expected to make serious amends before being employed by “the best” comics publishers in the business. Where are their standards?

Comics Alliance released a statement today about all of this, which you can read in full here, but here’s the gist:

Someone was targeting Chris not out of a sense of justice, but because they wanted to destroy his success. The campaign may also have been one of several efforts we’re aware of to discredit ComicsAlliance. These are not the tactics of progressives concerned about harassment in comics, but of agitators looking to tear down progressive voices — of which Chris is certainly one — using methods of harassment. (Notably, the messages referred to D’Orazio as “David’s wife,” rather than recognizing her as a person in her own right.)

No doubt these people also see themselves as the heroes of their stories. They are not. We cannot lend legitimacy to their behavior.

Chris is not the man he was when he directed his vitriol at Val D’Orazio. If he were that man, or if he felt no remorse for his past actions, he wouldn’t belong at today’s ComicsAlliance, given our strong avocation against harassment in the industry.

But Chris is a great example of something else we believe in very much; progress. Chris has shown the necessary intelligence and sensitivity to evolve. He was an early advocate for the positive change that is now taking over the industry.

It’s interesting that CA mentions that Sims’ harassers “referred to D’Orazio as ‘David’s wife,” rather than recognizing her as a person in her own right.” Interesting, because that’s exactly how Sims “apologized” to D’Orazio. Through her husband. Interesting too that they’re quick to discredit the people that protested Sims’ being hired by Marvel, but that they see him as an “example of…progress” when he seems to be apologizing to everyone except the person he actually harmed for every reason other than actually being sorry.

And so, it took an irate fan to get Sims to perform this public mea culpa. Not the pain he caused a fellow professional in the comics industry, but a fan. And that’s the sad part in all of this. Because what we as comics readers do in response to a situation like this is almost beside the point. Sure, we can boycott a title, a creator, a publisher, and perhaps those actions will encourage publishers like Marvel to rethink the kind of person they want to have associated with their brand, or encourage industry blogs like Comics Alliance to really examine how members of their staff conduct themselves in the comics sphere. But the fact is, D’Orazio is owed a direct apology that is long overdue, and has nothing to do with sales, or industry trends. It has to do with human decency.

[UPDATE] Sims has issued a further statement via his Ask Chris column on Comics Alliance. He uses it, in part, to finally apologize to D’Orazio saying, “since this is the biggest platform I have to say it, I want to make this the place where I apologize to Ms. D’Orazio. I’m sorry, I was completely in the wrong, and you have every right to reject this apology for being nowhere near as timely or helpful as it should be.”

Google doubles its online database of street art with 5,000 new pieces

by James Vincent

to add free content for its watch faces

"I kind of shy away from being a part of anything that’s corporate because I feel they sort of jump on our talent as artists for their own benefit," L.A. muralist Willie Herrón III told the LA Times. Herrón, who was asked to contribute his work to the project but declined, added that he was "kind of paranoid" about putting his work into the public domain. "I’m not opposed to what Google’s doing," he said, "but I want to see how it does first, test the grounds, play it safe — and if I like what they do, then I’ll contribute my art work in the future."

Google is showing graffiti artists some love, adding more than 5,000 images of street art to its online database of art. This expansion doubles the number of street art images in the Google Art Project, with the first set of works added last June. "Eighty-five art organizations from 34 countries are sharing pieces," said the company in a blog post. "Ranging from Sweden’s most famous street festival, to water tanks wrapped with art among New York city’s rooftops, to the abandoned walls of Buenos Aires that are a source of inspiration for street artists from all over the world."

the expansion adds audio tours, videos, and gifs

Google says its aim is to "preserve" what is a temporary art form and make the work accessible to people from all around the world. To do so, it's also expanding its multimedia offerings, with its street art hub featuring guided audio tours of notable locations and GIFs of animated work. (Google is referring to these pieces as "GIF-iti." Let's hope that doesn't catch on.) There are videos of artists painting and talking about their work and as a bonus, Google has released a new Street Art watch face for Android Wear smartwatches.

Some of the street art exhibitions in Google's new expansion.

Despite the effort Google is putting into this project, some graffiti artists are still suspicious of the company's motives.

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for all users worldwide [Updated]

by Sebastian Anthony
firehose

"everyone running Windows 7 or 8.1, irrespective of whether you pirated the operating system or not, will be allowed to upgrade to a legitimate version of Windows 10."

Speaking to Reuters from the WinHEC conference in China, Microsoft's operating system chief Terry Myerson said, "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." This means that everyone running Windows 7 or 8.1, irrespective of whether you pirated the operating system or not, will be allowed to upgrade to Windows 10.

It isn't clear if Myerson's comments only pertain to China, or to all Windows users worldwide. We have reached out to Microsoft for clarification, but haven't yet heard back. Myerson's wording certainly sounds like this will affect all Windows users worldwide.

Updated: ZDNet's Ed Bott got a response from a Microsoft spokesperson, confirming that the free upgrade path is indeed available for all pirates everywhere, and not just in China.
