“Nearly 40 years after the last book by the comic novelist P.G. Wodehouse, the aristocratic Bertie Wooster and his faithful valet, Jeeves, are making a comeback. The British novelist Sebastian Faulks, author of “Birdsong” and a best-selling James Bond book, “Devil May Care,” has written “Jeeves and the Wedding Bells,” to be released in the United States on Nov. 5, St. Martin’s Press said on Tuesday. Wodehouse, who died in 1975, chronicled the lives of Wooster and Jeeves in 11 novels and 35 stories.”

30 Minutes To Sync

Tom Harrington continues his series of posts on iCloud and Core Data.

I’ve seen addPersistentStoreWithType:etcetera: block for 30 minutes. And keep in mind, this is when iCloud is working normally. This is not an error condition, this is “working as designed.”

He suggests a solution: using two separate databases, one for normal use and one just for syncing, with custom code that shuttles data between the two.

That solution points to what bothers me about the whole thing, which is that this is all too tightly-coupled. Ideally your storage system and syncing system are not the same thing, and you could swap out one for another.

This would allow for flexibility and efficiencies that you can’t get when you just say “here’s my database; please sync it, iCloud.”

Apple and Backend Services for Apps

Imagine Apple announced something that worked like this:

  • You go to a website somewhere at apple.com and set up a backend for your app.

  • You create a database for it and a custom https API. You might have to write some code — but it would be in a popular scripting language, nothing weird. All this with a browser-based UI.

  • Apple provides a client framework for making calls to the server.

  • Authentication is completely taken care of — the system uses iCloud credentials, and your app doesn’t have to do anything. (It just knows if you’re authenticated or not.) In your app a user never has to sign in or create an account or anything like that.

  • Everything Apple stores is automatically encrypted. Apple’s server takes care of encrypting/decrypting automatically, so your code (in the client or on the server) never has to deal with that.

  • Apple’s system provides the ability run periodic tasks (like polling Twitter, App.net, or RSS feeds).

This would be more general than just a syncing solution, but you could use it just for syncing. Or you could add more sophisticated backend services. (You could write an RSS reader with this or something social like Glassboard.)

It would have to cost money, of course.

And you’d have to write code; you’d have to design your syncing system. But it would give you abilities you don’t have with iCloud Core Data syncing, and it would decouple your database and syncing, which is the right way to go.

I’ve mentioned Azure Mobile Services before, which I like because it’s in spitting-distance of an idealized Apple service. I would go so far as to suggest that Apple and Microsoft should partner to provide this service. Play to each company’s strengths.

(Disclaimer: Mobile Services paid me to do some videos for them and has sponsored my podcast.)

Syncing is only part of the future

Even if Apple works out syncing — somehow — that’s just not enough. That just gets us to where we should have been in 2008. The future belongs to apps with more sophisticated services.

And the future belongs (in part) to whoever provides those services. If you’re an iOS or Mac developer, you’d like it to be Apple.

Here’s what should worry folks at Apple: that Google provides something like the above for Android developers. Google obviously has the expertise, and it wants to make Android more attractive to developers.

(Yes, there’s Google App Engine, but I’m imagining something easier.)

Or, put another way: the backend system will become nearly as important as the UI frameworks, and plain-old-syncing isn’t enough.

AP reminds staffers not to retweet rumors in new social media guidelines

by Adi Robertson

Social media has had a massive impact on news-gathering and dissemination. Major print institutions like Reuters and the Associated Press have hired social media editors, adopting new platforms as a way to get information out quickly while larger articles are in the works. But with the immediacy of a tweet or post comes the danger of muddling the debate or making an offhand comment that someone will later regret. This became more evident than ever with the Boston Marathon bombings, when information from police scanners and rumors from Twitter quickly began feeding into each other. Seemingly in response, the AP has refreshed its social media guidelines, urging staff members to "avoid spreading unconfirmed rumors through tweets and posts."

The AP has had social media guidelines in place for some time, and previous versions prohibit posting material that "spreads rumors." A new revision, though, explicitly expands this rule.

Staffers should always refrain from spreading unconfirmed rumors online, regardless of whether other journalists or news outlets have shared the reports; because of staffers' affiliation with AP, doing so could lend credence to reports that may well be incorrect.

The guidelines also state that staffers should "steer clear of retweeting rumors and hearsay. They can, however, feel free to reply to such tweets in order to seek further information, as long as they're careful to avoid repeating the questionable reports." The AP generally maintains strict rules for staffers, who are asked to refrain from posting political affiliations or expressing opinions on controversial topics. Notably not addressed is the matter of account security: the AP's greatest social media problem so far came not from a rogue employee but from a hacked Twitter account.

Other companies, meanwhile, have run into their own set of issues. Microsoft faced an outcry after one of its employees began angrily posting about Xbox rumors, leading to his departure. Likewise, Reuters fired social media editor Matthew Keys after he tweeted prolifically — and sometimes incorrectly — during the Boston bombings; Keys has also been charged with participating in an Anonymous hacking operation. As the common Twitter saying goes, retweets may not equal endorsements, but the intent of a post can't always be separated from its effect. "Many people who see your tweets and retweets will never look at your Twitter bio," the AP cautions.

BitTorrent Sees Sync Users Share Over 1PB of Data

by Unknown Lamer
An anonymous reader writes with an update on the rapid adoption of BitTorrent Lab's Sync tool. From the article: "BitTorrent on Monday announced an impressive milestone for its file synchronization tool Sync: users have synced over 1PB of data. The company says over 70 terabytes are synced via the tool every day. BitTorrent first announced its Sync software back in January and released a private alpha. Between then and April 23, when the company release a public alpha, users synced over 200TB worth of data. In other words, over the past 13 days users have synced over 800TB of data. At this rate, the service will pass 10PB before even hitting a stable release."

Elizabeth Smart: Abstinence-only education can make rape survivors feel ‘dirty,’ ‘filthy’ — MSNBC

Elizabeth Smart: Abstinence-only education can make rape survivors feel ‘dirty,’ ‘filthy’ — MSNBC:

Smart said she grew up in a Mormon family and was taught through abstinence-only education that a person whose virginity was lost before marriage was considered worthless. She spoke to the crowd about a school teacher who urged students against premarital sex and compared women who had sex before their wedding nights to chewing gum.

“I thought, “Oh my gosh, I’m that chewed up piece of gum, nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away.’ And that’s how easy it is to feel like you no longer have worth, you no longer have value. Why would it even be worth screaming out? Why would it even make a difference if you are rescued? Your life still has no value.”

Smart’s remarks come as some Republican lawmakers, including in Arkansas, Texas and North Dakota, are pushing legislation that would defund comprehensive sex-ed programs for at-risk teens.

In 2002, Smart—then 14-years-old—was abducted at knifepoint from her bedroom in Salt Lake City. She was held captive and raped but was found alive nine months later. Her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, was sentenced to life behind bars.

Fabricating a mechanical wristwatch at home

by Mike Szczys

DIY #shredding

diy-mechanical-wristwatch

Our mouth is still agape after digging through [Tom's] watchmaking blog. This gentleman spent several years designing and machining his own mechanical wristwatch. A dozen years ago or so [Tom] answered an ad for an apprentice watchmaker. He worked on watches and came across a book that detailed how timepieces are made. He was told that no-one does it like that anymore, which only fed his curiosity. What he came up with is, to his knowledge, the first timepiece every made in Australia.

It’s no secret that we have a thing for clocks. But we feature digital timepieces almost exclusively. We’ve love mechanical watches too but don’t see them as hobby projects very frequently. After looking at what goes into the mechanism it’s not hard to see why.

[Tom] was faced with a variety of challenges along the way. One of the biggest was having to come up with tools that would let him perform the precise milling work necessary to achieve success. You’ll want to read through his movement design and manufacture posts. He laid out the plan in CAD, but ended up using some hacked together milling tools to get the job done.

[Thanks Amit]

The existence of the long-lived words suggests there was a “proto-Eurasiatic” language that was the common ancestor to about 700 contemporary languages that are the native tongues of more than half the world’s people.'

Government-Created Quantum Network Has Been Operational For Two and a Half Years

by Kimber Streams

Quantum Cryptography

Researchers at the government-run Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have created a quantum network that has been successfully running for the past two and a half years, though the system falls short of true quantum internet. The basic premise behind quantum communication is that any act of measuring a quantum object changes it, so any attempt to intercept, decode, or eavesdrop on a quantum message will change the data, making it obvious to the recipient that the message was tampered with. This allows people to send completely secure messages over a quantum connection. Ideally, quantum internet would allow for an individual to send a quantum message to anyone anywhere.

However, true quantum internet is impossible at this point in time because current quantum technology requires a direct connection between the sender and the receiver. Without a direct connection between points A and B, the data must be routed through a central hub. The act of routing a message, however, requires reading part of it, which in turn changes the data. The quantum network created by researches at the Los Alamos National Laboratory attempts to circumvent this problem by using a hub-and-spoke network — a network in which all the nodes are connected to one central hub. This hub decodes quantum messages sent from a single node into classical bits, reads them, and converts them back into quantum bits before sending them along to their destination. While it’s not true quantum internet, it does allow for secure messages to be sent across a multi-node network. However, the entire system is only as secure as the central hub, which lacks the protection of quantum encryption.

We Were Going To Take Over The ‘Onion’ Website, But It’s A Real Mess With All Those Ads | The Onion - America's Finest News Source:

Earlier today, we launched an online attack on the American journalism website The Onion in order to lay bare the lies the Western media has been perpetrating about the Syrian government and its revered leader, Bashar al-Assad. However, we immediately regretted our actions as soon as we hacked into The Onion’s site and saw what a goddamn mess it is with all those ads.

Seriously, that site is a complete disaster.

Look, when the Syrian Electronic Army hacks into a website, we want users to immediately see our message that Zionist-controlled interests are distorting the facts that come out of Syria, not a bunch of huge, constantly looping ads for God knows what that assault the senses and literally leave you nauseated. And when we looked at the layout of The Onion’s homepage, we immediately realized the huge mistake we’d made.

The Onion Responds with Humor After Their Twitter Account is Hacked by Syrian Electronic Army

The Onion Twitter Account Hacked

Tweets posted by the Syrian Electronic Army during the hack of @TheOnion

On Monday The Onion’s Twitter account was hijacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, a hacker group that has attacked a number of media sites in recent weeks as part of a campaign to support the embattled regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. During the hack, the group posted a series of their own mock news headlines targeting Syrian rebels, the United States, Israel, and other perceived enemies of the Syrian regime. A Syrian Electronic Army member told The New York Times that the attack was retaliation for an article published by The Onion in March, with the byline Bashar al-Assad: “Hi, In The Past 2 Years, You Have Allowed Me To Kill 70,000 People.”

After regaining control of their Twitter account, The Onion responded in typical style: they posted tips on “how to prevent your major media site from being hacked,” and another article announcing they had changed their Twitter password to OnionMan77.

Ray Harryhausen, Stop Motion Animation Pioneer (1920-2013)

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Clash of the Titans

The family of Ray Harryhausen has announced that he has died at the age of 92. Ray Harryhausen is well regarded as a pioneer in the stop-motion animation world, known for creating a technique called Dynamation.

Here’s the statement from his family:

Raymond Frederick Harryhausen
Born: Los Angeles 29th June 1920
Died: London 7th May 2013.

The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, Visual Effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator. He was a multi-award winner which includes a special Oscar and BAFTA. Ray’s influence on today’s film makers was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations.

Harryhausen’s fascination with animated models began when he first saw Willis O’Brien’s creations in KING KONG with his boyhood friend, the author Ray Bradbury in 1933, and he made his first foray into filmmaking in 1935 with home-movies that featured his youthful attempts at model animation. Over the period of the next 46 years, he made some of the genres best known movies – MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949), IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA (1955), 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH (1957), MYSTERIUOUS ISLAND (1961), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966), THER VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969), three films based on the adventures of SINBAD and CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981). He is perhaps best remembered for his extraordinary animation of seven skeletons in JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963) which took him three months to film.

Harryhausen’s genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray’s hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so.

Today The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation, a charitable Trust set up by Ray on the 10th April 1986, is devoted to the protection of Ray’s name and body of work as well as archiving, preserving and restoring Ray’s extensive Collection.

15 Command Line Tools for Monitoring Linux Systems

by Stefan Sinca

Do you need to monitor your Linux server’s performance? Most Linux distributions come equipped with many built-in monitoring tools. These tools allow you to retrieve information about system activities, and can be used to find possible causes for your server’s performance issues.

The commands discussed in this article are some of the most basic commands when it comes to system analysis and debugging server issues, such as discovering disk, CPU, memory and network bottlenecks.

1 - top – The Process Activity Command

The top command provides a dynamic, real-time view of the running system (i.e. actual process activity). By default, it displays the most CPU-intensive tasks running on the server and updates the list every five seconds.

Commonly Used Hot Keys

Most Linux distributions come equipped with many built-in monitoring tools.

There are several useful hot keys used with the top command:

  • t — toggles summary information off and on.
  • m — toggles memory information off and on.
  • A — sorts the display by top consumers of various system resources. This is useful for quickly identifying performance-hungry tasks.
  • f — enters an interactive configuration screen for top. It’s helpful for configuring top for a specific task.
  • o — enables you to interactively select the order of the displayed fields.
  • r — issues the renice command.
  • k — issues the kill command.
  • z — toggles between color and monochrome.

2 - vmstat – System Activity, Hardware and System Information

The vmstat command reports virtual memory statistics: processes, memory, paging, block IO, traps and cpu activity.

Syntax:

# vmstat 3

Sample output:

procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------

11 - netstat – Network Statistics

The netstat command displays both incoming and outgoing network connections, routing tables and a number of network interface statistics. It is available on Unix, Unix-like systems, and Windows NT-based operating systems.

 # netstat

12 - iptraf – Real-time Network Statistics

The iptraf command is an colorful, interactive IP LAN monitor. It is an ncurses-based IP LAN monitor that generates various network statistics including TCP info, UDP counts, ICMP and OSPF information, Ethernet load info, node stats, IP checksum errors and more. It can provide the following info in easy to read format:

  • Network traffic statistics by TCP connection.
  • IP traffic statistics by network interface.
  • Network traffic statistics by protocol.
  • Network traffic statistics by TCP/UDP port and packet size.
  • Network traffic statistics by Layer2 address.

13 - tcpdump – Detailed Network Traffic Analysis

The tcpdump is a simple command that dumps a network’s traffic. You need, however, a good understanding of the TCP/IP protocol in order to use this tool. For example, to display traffic info about DNS, enter:

 # tcpdump -i eth1 'udp port 53'

To display all IPv4 HTTP packets from port 80 (i.e. print only packets that contain data; not, for example, SYN abd FIN packets and ACK-only packets), enter:

 # tcpdump 'tcp port 80 and (((ip[2:2] - ((ip[0]&0xf)<<2)) - ((tcp[12]&0xf0)>>2)) != 0)'

To display all HTTP sessions to 192.168.1.5:

# tcpdump -ni eth0 'dst 192.168.1.5 and tcp and port http'

14 - strace – System Calls

The strace command traces system calls and signals. This is useful for debugging the webserver and other server problems.

The following command runs strace against /bin/foo and captures its output to output.txt:

 # strace -o output.txt /bin/foo

15 - /proc – Various Kernel Statistics

The /proc file system provides detailed information about various hardware devices and other Linux kernel information. Common /proc examples are:

    # cat /proc/cpuinfo
    # cat /proc/meminfo
    # cat /proc/zoneinfo
    # cat /proc/mounts

Conclusion

And there you have it: fifteen useful commands that let you monitor different aspects of your Linux system. Naturally, these commands are only a small subset of the many that Linux provides. But for day to day operations, they are usually enough.

Have a favorite command? Let’s keep the conversation going within the comments area.

Watch 'Upstream Color,' the new film from 'Primer' director Shane Carruth, online now

by Adi Robertson

Upstream Color, the beautiful and acclaimed indie sci-fi film from Primer director Shane Carruth, is still showing in a few theaters, but it's now available for everyone as a download or DVD. Carruth has released Upstream Color for download on a variety of platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play; while it's $14.99 on these sites, you can also spend $5 more for a DRM-free stream or download through his studio's site. A combination DVD / Blu-ray bundle is also for sale, with access to the download included.

Upstream Color premiered just a few months ago at Sundance Film Festival, and it's seen an extremely limited theatrical release since then; in an interview with our own Ross Miller, Carruth discussed plans for using digital distribution to make it available to a wider audience. Despite (or because of) its cult popularity, his first film Primer proved difficult to find until it began showing up in digital form online; it got its own DRM-free release late last year. For Upstream Color, that's happened much more quickly. If you haven't had the chance to see the film yet, you can check out our review from Sundance here.

US Senate Passes Internet Tax Bill 69 To 27

by Unknown Lamer
schwit1 quotes The Washington Post: "The Senate aimed to help traditional retailers and financially strapped state and local governments Monday by passing a bill that would widely subject online shopping — for many a largely tax-free frontier — to state sales taxes. The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 69 to 27, getting support from Republicans and Democrats alike." schwit1 adds "Unfortunately online businesses could be in for a rude awakening when it comes to the law's interpretation." Passage in the House is not certain, and companies like eBay are lobbying to raise the minimum sales required to collect state sales tax to $10 million instead of $1 million per year.

It's 2013, and Windows Activation Is Still Frustrating

by timothy
Deathspawner writes "There's little that's more frustrating than being a legal customer and getting screwed over by the company you're supporting. If there's a perfect example of this, it's with Microsoft's OS and its millions of customers that have had to ring its tech support lines for activation help. Recently, a Techgage writer got bit by an issue with Windows 8 — caused by Microsoft itself — and wasn't even able to call to fix it. Microsoft has two problems to solve here: it needs online chat support (like most large companies in 2013) and it definitely needs an activation system that doesn't make things difficult for its legal customers on a too-regular basis."

BT Begins Customer Tests of Carrier Grade NAT

by timothy
firehose

great

judgecorp writes "BT Retail has started testing Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT) with its customer. CGNAT is a controversial practice, in which IP addresses are shared between customers, limiting what customers can do on the open Internet. Although CGNAT goes against the Internet's original end-to-end principles, ISPs say they are forced to use it because IPv4 addresses are running out, and IPv6 is not widely implemented. BT's subsidiary PlusNet has already carried out CGNAT trials, and now BT is trying it on "Option 1" customers who pay for low Internet usage."
