The Smithsonian Channel has compiled amazing slow-motion footage of such exploding plants as violets, touch-me-nots, and squirting cucumbers as they burst open in order to disperse and propagate their seeds.

Well friends, it’s that time. Today’s my last day at The Mary Sue. It’s been a wild couple of years, first with Geekosystem and then with TMS, and I feel so lucky to have been able to show up to a job every day (well, metaphorically, since I live in the Northern Waste) where I get to write with likeminded people about the things that matter in this geek world. And also, frequently, about Mass Effect and Jeff Goldblum.

And while I’ve loved writing for you guys every day, I have to say that my absolute favorite part of this job has been in my role as Contributors Editor. It’s been such a privilege to get to work with so many talented people, and I’ve been lucky to provide our contributors a platform from which to speak and to grow. To everyone who put themselves out there by e-mailing us with a pitch, or by sending me a piece that made them nervous, or who put themselves outside of their comfort zone by submitting: thank you! It’s been such a blast working with you all, and I hope we’ll get the chance to do so again in the future.

I have so many people to whom I owe thanks for this rad opportunity that I barely know where to begin. To Jill, for being an unstoppable and inspirational force in geekdom, and for taking a chance on some random Canadian you’d never met. To Rollin and Glen, who (for reasons unknown) also took that chance. To Dan A., for the gig and for continuing to invest in something as monumentally important as TMS. To the people who are so good at what they do that made me want this job so desperately in the first place: Dan, Carolyn, Susana, Rebecca, Victoria, Becky. To all the other great people I’ve had the opportunity to work with, like Jessica, Alanna, and Teresa, who continue to give their all to this community.

And, of course, to you, the TMS readers, the ones who made me actually want to read the comments sections on my own articles. Thanks for the thoughtful discussions and the kindness you showed both me and my work.

I have another big project coming up that I’ll be able to let you guys know about shortly, and I would love it if we could stay in touch/yell about nerd stuff together on Twitter – and Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook, if you’re into that – but mostly Twitter! Plus, you can always grab my book, The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, if you feel like it. No pressure. Okay, like, a little pressure. It’s in libraries too, so we’re cool.

Susan Kare spoke at the Layers conference this past week in San Francisco. During her presentation she showed the origin of the CMD symbol she designed for the original Mac. I had no idea it was so storied.

Here’s the CMD symbol as it looks today:

Through a book of obscure iconography, Susan Kare found this symbol used on Swedish road signs to indicate a landmark:

The Swedish symbol itself was inspired by an ancient castle on the island of Borgolm:

The employees who kept the data systems humming in the vast Walt Disney fantasy fief did not suspect trouble when they were suddenly summoned to meetings with their boss.

While families rode the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and searched for Nemo on clamobiles in the theme parks, these workers monitored computers in industrial buildings nearby, making sure millions of Walt Disney World ticket sales, store purchases and hotel reservations went through without a hitch. Some were performing so well that they thought they had been called in for bonuses.

Instead, about 250 Disney employees were told in late October that they would be laid off.

What a dick move. I expect better from Disney.
