As Strike Looms, FBI Sharpens Scrutiny Of Syrians In U.S. For Signs Of Retaliation

The F.B.I. has increased its surveillance of Syrians inside the United States in response to concerns that a military strike against the government of President Bashar al-Assad could lead to terrorist attacks here or against American allies and interests abroad, according to current and former senior United States officials.

Don't miss this engrossing novel about the science of dragons

With A Natural History of Dragons, Marie Brennan has done something that I didn't think was possible. She's written an adventure about dragons in an alternate Victorian world, while also realistically capturing what it's like to be a young woman who wants to buck convention and devote her life to science.

Mom Lets 4-Year-Old Daughter Complete Her Illustrations To Amazing Effect

Artist Mica Angela Hendricks was in a difficult spot. Her daughter had a penchant for commandeering her art supplies but she desperately wanted to try out a new sketchbook. So she did, and so her daughter asked to use it, as predicted. When Hendricks resisted, her daughter said, “If you can’t share, we might have to take it away if you can’t share.” That's one smart cookie. "Not surprisingly, I LOVED what she drew," wrote Hendricks. "She never hesitated in her intent. She wasn’t tentative. She was insistent and confident that she would of course improve any illustration I might have done…And the thing is, she DID." Take a look at what the mother/daughter duo created.

How police caught two bank robbers using Verizon cell phone data

by Annalee Newitz

How police caught two bank robbers using Verizon cell phone data

They were two bank robbers who never would have been caught ten years ago. But last year, they were tracked, followed, and convicted by federal agents who did nothing more than get a court order for "cell tower dumps." It's a win for crime fighting, but is the price of surveillance too great?

Latest Snowden leak: NSA spied on Al Jazeera communications

by Megan Geuss

On Saturday, German paper Der Spiegel reported that it had viewed a document obtained by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, in which the agency wrote that it had spied on Qatar-based Arab news broadcaster Al Jazeera. This appears to be the first confirmation that the NSA has used its powers to secretly monitor media outlets.

Spiegel did not publish any of the documents in question, but noted that one was dated March 23, 2006 and showed that, “the NSA's Network Analysis Center managed to access and read communication by 'interesting targets' that was specially protected by the news organization. The information also shows that the NSA officials were not satisfied with Al Jazeera's language analysis.” Spiegel also reports that in one of the documents, the NSA refers to this operation as a “notable success” because the targets of the operation had "high potential as sources of intelligence."

It is not clear whether the surveillance is ongoing, or whether the operation was a one-off. The extent to which journalists and managers at Al Jazeera were spied on is also not clear from the Spiegel report.

Mega Man designer crowdfunding a new, PC-based side-scrolling shooter

by Kyle Orland
Concept art for Mighty No. 9.

Keiji Inafune may have stopped working on Mega Man games when he ended a 23-year career with Capcom back in 2010, but a casual look at his new Kickstarter effort might have you confused as to whether or not the storied developer has actually left the Blue Bomber behind.

Inafune, who has also worked on Capcom franchises like Dead Rising and Onimusha announced the Kickstarter effort for Mighty No. 9 at the Penny Arcade Expo today, and the game's design is… familiar, to say the least. You will control the only "good" robot in a world of automatons that have been infected with an evil virus. You will "run, jump, blast and transform" through side-scrolling stages "using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies." You will look at concept art that appears to have come from a Mega Man fan art page that is obsessed with authenticity to the source material.

That's not to say that Mighty No. 9 is purely a case of Inafune ripping himself off. The Kickstarter page promises the new, un-Mega-Man-ish ability for the main character to transform parts of his body into different shapes to gain new capabilities, such as a grappling hook, magnetic limbs, or "a tank-like body." The titular character will also have the Kirby-like ability to steal capabilities from smaller enemies (not just bosses), gaining temporary benefits like speed boosts, double jumps, or massive attacks.

SPACE PUPPY!!! :D

by Erik Henriksen

Look, I was excited to see Riddick, even before I found out Starbuck from Battlestar would be in it, even before I found out that Vin Diesel leveraged his house to make it, even before I—HOLY FUCKING SHIT, THIS MOVIE HAS A SPACE PUPPY IN IT????!!!

Vin Diesel running in slow motion while carrying a space puppy is probably the greatest thing I have ever seen.

Review: Village

by susd@pretend-money.com (SU&SD)

shared less for the game, which looks like a German gamer remix of Life, and more for the review, which is A+ top-shelf SU&SD

Once we heard about all the love and awards Village was earning we just had to dispatch Paul and Quinns, SU&SD's softest city boys, to take a look. This one's a true simulation the simple life, perfect for anybody who wants to breed horses, dedicate themselves to the church or murder their relatives when nobody's looking.

Village has an expansion, Village Inn, but Quinns has been a very good boy and not bought it. ...Right, Quinns?

Oh, and if you don't recognise that intro, go and acquire all 17 episodes of The Prisoner immediately. You can thank us later.
