Good Ol' Tumbledown Trails

"This 9/11-themed golf course ad is a real thing that ran in today's Wisconsin State Journal," tweeted Josh Orton.

Tumbledown Trails, the name of which makes it sound like a delightful place where the Velveteen Rabbit went to retire, is currently having a lively time on their Facebook page, where there are hundreds of posted opinions—most of them accompanied by a surplus of exclamation points and/or ellipses, and most of them serving as excellent reminders of why reading internet comments and visiting Facebook are terrible, terrible ideas.

A Message to Aaron Sorkin

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

Some people really like Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom... even though it is TERRIBLE. And while most of us want to like The Newroom, Sorkin is in no mood to listen to reason and improve it. And so, here is a funny, smart, impassioned plea for The Newsroom to be better from Funny or Die. Plus it's in language that Sorkin can definitely understand.

Okay that first opening scene in The Newsroom was pretty good.

I finally got around to watching Breaking Bad... | Christopher Keelty, Author

by djempirical

I finally got around to watching Breaking Bad recently (I know, late to the party) and like most people I’ve been taking it in four-to-six-episode doses. One thing that really interests me about the show is how it juxtaposes two of America’s most catastrophic policy failures: The for-profit health care industry and the failed War on Drugs, which has created a black market that makes the manufacture and sale of illegal drugs incredibly profitable.
I got to thinking how uniquely American the show is, and that led to this comic strip.

Microsoft exec defends Xbox One from accusations it’s “underpowered”

guys guys guys

this is minor irrelevant shit right here

Where are the gigahurtz? I don't see any gigahurtz in this picture!

We're getting to the point in the run-up to a new generation of consoles where certain people become obsessed with comparing spec numbers to determine once and for all which new system will be "more powerful" (and therefore "better"). Thus far this kind of navel-gazing stat-measuring contest seems to show numerical advantages of 30 percent to 50 percent for the PlayStation 4 over the Xbox One in a number of important specs, such as GPU cores, control units, memory bandwidth, and teraflop shading.

The stat battle has gained renewed attention recently, though, now that Microsoft Director of Product Planning Albert Penello has waded in to defend the Xbox One from accusations of it being underpowered. "The performance delta between the two platforms is not as great as the raw numbers lead the average consumer to believe," Penello wrote in gaming forum NeoGAF late last week. "There are things about our system architecture not fully understood, and there are things about theirs as well, that bring the two systems into balance."

Those "things" include Microsoft's skills on the software side of the graphics-optimization equation, Penello writes, built up over years working on the DirectX standard:

CANTERBURY, England (RNS) Richard Dawkins, one of the world’s best-known and outspoken atheists, has provoked outrage among child protection agencies and experts after suggesting that recent child abuse scandals have been overblown.

In an interview in The Times magazine on Saturday (Sept. 7), Dawkins, 72, he said he was unable to condemn what he called “the mild pedophilia” he experienced at an English school when he was a child in the 1950s.

Referring to his early days at a boarding school in Salisbury, he recalled how one of the (unnamed) masters “pulled me on his knee and put his hand inside my shorts.”

He said other children in his school peer group had been molested by the same teacher but concluded: “I don’t think he did any of us lasting harm.”

“I am very conscious that you can’t condemn people of an earlier era by the standards of ours. Just as we don’t look back at the 18th and 19th centuries and condemn people for racism in the same way as we would condemn a modern person for racism, I look back a few decades to my childhood and see things like caning, like mild pedophilia, and can’t find it in me to condemn it by the same standards as I or anyone would today,” he said.

He said the most notorious cases of pedophilia involve rape and even murder and should not be bracketed with what he called “just mild touching up.”

Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist and the interview was released on the eve of the publication of his autobiography, An Appetite for Wonder, on Thursday.

Peter Watt, director of child protection at the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, called Dawkins’ remarks “a terrible slight” on those who have been abused and suffered the effects for decades.

“Mr. Dawkins seems to think that because a crime was committed a long time ago we should judge it in a different way,” Watt said. “But we know that the victims of sexual abuse suffer the same effects whether it was 50 years ago or yesterday.”

Peter Saunders, founder of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood and himself a victim of abuse, told The Times that Dawkins’ comments were worrying and unhelpful, adding: “Abuse in all its forms has always been wrong. Evil is evil and we have to challenge it whenever and wherever it occurs.”

iPhone 5S comes in gold, silver, and gray, and has a 64-bit processor, because architecture transitions are always smooth and easy, especially when you've just fragmented your phone into 32-bit and 64-bit models.

iWork is free now, because you obviously were buying it before and not just installing it off a friends disc or torrent.

Sigur Rós to appear in 'Game of Thrones' next year

by Amar Toor

The upcoming season of Game of Thrones has taken a turn for the ethereal. Entertainment Weekly is reporting today that Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Rós will appear in the fourth season of HBO's hit fantasy series, which is scheduled to air in spring 2014. According to EW, band members Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, Georg Hólm, and Orri Páll Dýrason are currently shooting on location in Croatia, though it remains unclear what role (or music) they'll play in the upcoming season.

The decision isn't a huge surprise, considering that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are fans of the band's music — which they listened to extensively while shooting in Iceland — and the show's history of casting musical acts. Members of Snow Patrol and Coldplay have made guest appearances in earlier seasons, and HBO tapped indie band The Hold Steady to arrange a Westeros tavern song that played over the closing credits of an episode last season.

Replica Enterprise bridge used to sell surveillance to Congress

and/or "he took time to sit with them in their offices and explain the intricacies of modern technology in simple, plain-spoken language. He demonstrated a command of the subject without intimidating those who had none."

A long, fascinating profile of NSA "cowboy" Gen. Keith Alexander in Foreign Policy reveals that the top spook is fan of science fiction movies and built his old command room to look like the bridge of the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He sold members of Congress by letting them sit in the big chair and "play Picard."

When he was running the Army's Intelligence and Security Command, Alexander brought many of his future allies down to Fort Belvoir for a tour of his base of operations, a facility known as the Information Dominance Center. It had been designed by a Hollywood set designer to mimic the bridge of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek, complete with chrome panels, computer stations, a huge TV monitor on the forward wall, and doors that made a "whoosh" sound when they slid open and closed. Lawmakers and other important officials took turns sitting in a leather "captain's chair" in the center of the room and watched as Alexander, a lover of science-fiction movies, showed off his data tools on the big screen.

"Everybody wanted to sit in the chair at least once to pretend he was Jean-Luc Picard," says a retired officer in charge of VIP visits.

Alexander wowed members of Congress with his eye-popping command center. And he took time to sit with them in their offices and explain the intricacies of modern technology in simple, plain-spoken language. He demonstrated a command of the subject without intimidating those who had none.

Bradley Manning Sentenced To 35 Years

firehose

Bradley Manning Sentenced To 35 Years:

35 years, with credit for time served — 1,294 days, 3.5 years awaiting this trial, under circumstances the UN has deplored as “cruel and inhumane.” In addition, he was dishonorably discharged and stripped of pay and allowances.

This is how the government has chosen to handle someone who exposed wrongdoing — with a sentence that might see Manning hit the age of 57 before he’s allowed to walk free. He exposed war crimes and the pettiness and deceit behind international diplomacy. He exposed the ongoing torture at Gitmo done in the name of fighting terrorism. His leaks propelled Wikileaks into the public eye.

Despite the fact his opponents testified no lives were lost because of the leaks and that most, if not all, potential damage was mitigated by Wikileaks’ handling of the documents, the government still wanted him locked away. 35 years for embarrassing the republic. 35 years for not minding his own business. 35 years for attempting to show Americans what its government was actually doing under the pretenses of fighting terrorism and diplomacy. Meanwhile, those who actually performed illegal actions walk free

This administration, much like the one before it, will not tolerate whistleblowing, failing to realize that its efforts to protect its reputation are doing far more harm than the whistleblowing itself.

George Zimmerman's Wife on 911 Tape: 'I Am Really, Really Scared' - ABC News

by djempirical

'she believes the not guilty verdict has left her husband feeling "invincible" and since then has been "making some reckless decisions." '

George Zimmerman was released without charges today after his wife called 911 to say Zimmerman punched his father-in-law in the nose and threatened to shoot him and his wife.

Zimmerman, acquitted in July of the murder of teenager Trayvon Martin, claimed that he was acting in a "defensive manner" during the incident, according to police.

Zimmerman was handcuffed and questioned by police in Lake Mary, Fla., according to Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell.

Listen to Shellie Zimmerman's 911 Call or Read the Transcript of Her Call to Police

He was later released without charges when his wife and father-in-law refused to press charges or give police a sworn statement. Police said they are reviewing surveillance video from the home and reserve the right to file charges later based on the video.

Police said George Zimmerman volunteered the surveillance videos to investigators.

Shellie Zimmerman called 911 shortly after 2 p.m. today and reported that her husband assaulted her father, Colin Morgan, and was waving a gun around and threatening her and her relatives, according to police in Lake Mary, Fla.

Lake Mary police took the call "extremely seriously" and sent eight units, including officers in tactical gear with ballistic shields, to the home, according to Bracknell.

Shellie Zimmerman Tells Why She Filed for Divorce

In the 911 call, Shellie Zimmerman tells a dispatcher that her husband was in his car raging, adding "he continually has his hand on his gun and he says step closer…" When Shellie Zimmerman trails off the dispatcher asks "step closer and what?" to which Shellie responds "a Step closer and he'd shoot us."

Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense after he shot and killed Martin, told police in a statement that he was acting in "a defensive manner" during the incident and did not have his hand on his gun, according to Lake Mary police spokesman Zach Hudson.

Shellie Zimmerman and her father said they do not want to press charges, Bracknell said. Both Shellie's lawyer, Kelly Sims, as well as George Zimmerman's lawyer were at the home, ABC News has learned.

The 911 tapes describe a terrified Shellie Zimmerman. On the call to a police dispatcher she told police that her husband punched her father in the nose, smashed her iPad, cut it with a pocketknife and raged, "one step closer and he'd shoot us."

"I don't know what he's capable of. I am really, really scared," she told the dispatcher.

When police arrived she could be heard on the phone saying, "Dad, get behind a car or something. I don't know if he's going to start shooting at us or not." George Zimmerman Feels 'Invincible,' His Wife Tells ABC News The incident comes just days after Shellie gave an explosive interview to ABC News in which she said that she's not sure she "ever really knew" her husband through their seven years of marriage and felt she was the victim of verbal abuse by him. She also said she believes the not guilty verdict has left her husband feeling "invincible" and since then has been "making some reckless decisions."

"I think I'm realizing that I have been married to a person for almost seven years, and I don't think that I ever really knew him at all," she said.

Shellie filed for divorce earlier this month, just two months after her husband was acquitted on murder charges related to the 2012 death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

Shellie said that she had stood by her husband throughout the ordeal that began on Feb. 26, 2012, when he shot and killed the unarmed teenager and came to an end when a Florida jury acquitted him of murder this summer.

"I stood by my husband through everything and I kind of feel like he left me with a bunch of broken glass that I'm supposed to now assemble and make a life. ... It's just heartbreaking," Shellie said.

"I have a selfish husband. And I think George is all about George," she said.

George Zimmerman's legal team declined to comment on the divorce proceedings. They did not immediately respond to requests for comment today relating to the domestic incident.
