Weapons and picture frames: Taser International acquires a photo sharing service

by Dann Berg

It may seem strange that one of the country's largest non-lethal weapons manufacturer is purchasing a Seattle-based tech startup that turns smartphones and tablets into digital picture frames, but Taser International is steadily growing beyond its widely adopted electric stun gun and into the first-person video market with products like Axon Flex and Evidence.com.

The New York Times reports that Taser International will be acquiring Familiar, a digital picture frame service that allows friends and family to share pictures and video across a variety of devices, such as computers, smartphones and tablets. Five people from the startup will be joining Taser International, presumably working on building the infrastructure for more advanced handling the contents of the always-worn police officer camera.

Helps determine if the use of force is reasonable

Both police departments and Taser International have reason to document the use of the weapons. Although Tasers are categorized as non-lethal, the devices still pose health risks and have been cited as the cause of numerous deaths. Equipping police officers and Tasers with a camera helps document each incident to protect both officers and Taser's brand reputation by determining if the use of force is reasonable.

Currently, Axon Flex videos are uploaded to Evidence.com, where police officers can view, manage, and share captured clips. The acquisition of Familiar could bring an expansion of this service to include support for a variety of different devices, which could lead to an even wider adoption of the police camera system.

Christopher Colombus: raping, murdering, enslaving, genocidal pedophile

by Cory Doctorow
rachel shared this story from Boing Boing:
Word: "That's a nice idea, but if we're going to celebrate the struggle of indigenous people against genocide and slavery, maybe the right people to celebrate are the indigenous heroes and victims of Europeans, not Europeans who thought better of the unconscionable, no matter how thoroughly they repented."

The latest of The Oatmeal makes a pretty compelling case for hating Christopher Colombus, whose achievements ("discovering" America, sailing from Europe to America, proving the curvature of the Earth) are all BS. More importantly, though, is what Colombus did do: launched a campaign of genocide in order to terrorize indigenous people gold-mining slavery, a program buoyed up by mass slaughter, mutilations, and systematic sexual slavery of girls as young as nine or ten.

Matthew Inman, the Oatmeal's author, proposes celebrating the life of Barolome de las Casas, who also set out to slave and murder his way through the New World, but changed his mind, took the cloth, and spent 50 years defending indigenous people. That's a nice idea, but if we're going to celebrate the struggle of indigenous people against genocide and slavery, maybe the right people to celebrate are the indigenous heroes and victims of Europeans, not Europeans who thought better of the unconscionable, no matter how thoroughly they repented.

Inman cites Howard Zinn's excellent People's History of the United States as a primary reference for the piece, and I concur: Zinn's work and those derived from it (like the graphic novel and the audio of dramatic readings) are important and fantastic works.

Christopher Columbus was awful (but this other guy was not) - The Oatmeal

All of these companies have more cash right now than the US government

by David Yanofsky

The US government is running out of money to pay its bills. It is so close to reaching the statutory limit on debt at this point that US Treasury secretary Jack Lew has taken “extraordinary measures” to delay becoming delinquent on payments owed.

Republicans offered a deal today to temporarily raise the debt limit, but the saga has left the Treasury with just $32 billion in its operating accounts, less than is held by nine Standard & Poor’s 500 companies in cash and short-term investments. General Electric has nearly three times as much readily accessible cash as the US government right now.

yanofsky_Cash-on-hand_chartbuilder

Just six months ago, the Treasury had $151 billion to spend, following US annual tax collection for 2012.  (Those receipts were unusually high as Americans tried to avert higher taxes in 2013 according to Nancy Vanden Houten a government and policy analyst at Stone McCarthy Research Associates.)

Astronomer recreates the solar system from Lord of the Rings lore

Several years ago, Central Connecticut astrophysics professor Kristine Larsen figured out the structure of the solar system from J.R.R. Tolkien's work, using hints scattered throughout the books as well as her own knowledge of Tolkien's source material (which is, not surprisingly, our own solar system).

'Li'l Dynamites' One-Shots Promise The Cutest Examples Of Vampirism And Space Genocide You've Ever Seen [NYCC 2013]

by Matt D. Wilson
Lil DynamitesDynamite

Each week in January, Dynamite Entertainment will unleash a burst of cuteness upon the world.

The Li’l Dynamites series of one-shots takes five series – Battlestar Galactica, Vampirella, Bionic Man, Evil Ernie and Red Sonja – and makes them adorable.

Roger Langridge, whose all-ages series Snarked! won an Eisner, will handle writing and art on Li’l Ernie. Art Baltazar and Franco will take on Li’l Battlestar Galactica; Eric Trautmann and Agnes Garbowska will write and draw Li’l Vampi, respectively; Brandon Jerwa and Ian McGinty are the team on Li’l Bionic Kids, and Li’l Sonja will be by Jim Zubkavich and Joel Carroll.

Each issue will have two covers, a regular, interlocking one by Baltazar and a special subscribers-only cover by Garbowska.

Here’s what Langridge had to say about the event, via a Dynamite press release:

It’s great to see Dynamite making an effort to expand its audience with a roster of kids’ comics.  I’m delighted to be involved with any effort to reach younger readers – and, of course, I’m using my command of the craft and my sense of humor to try to appeal to older readers at the same time.

Most Cave Paintings Were Painted By Women, Says Penn State Researcher

by timothy
barlevg writes "Analyzing hand-prints found in cave sites, an archaeologist from Penn State University has concluded that roughly 75% of all ancient cave art was painted by women. Previously it was thought that neolithic cave paintings were made mostly by men, perhaps to chronicle their kills. But an analysis of the relative lengths of fingers in hand stencils found on cave walls suggests that it was mostly prehistoric women--not men--who created these works."

TV: Newswire: Amy Poehler and her brother to invade Sweden with their new NBC sitcom

by Marah Eakin

NBC has acquired U.S. broadcast rights for Welcome To Sweden, a comedy being produced by Amy Poehler and her brother Greg. The show both stars and is based on the life story of the male Poehler, who was living in New York until he fell in love with a Swedish girl and followed her back to her homeland. The show will be shot in Sweden, and should feature a mix of both Swedish and American actors, including Solsidan’s Josephine Bornebusch, Illeana Douglas, and, of all people, Patrick Duffy. Guests like Will Ferrell, Aubrey Plaza, Gene Simmons, and the aforementioned female Poehler will also pop in throughout the season.

Welcome To Sweden is actually the first show ever commissioned by Swedish network TV4 that will air in English. It’s also the first show NBC has been involved with in some capacity that shoots in Sweden.

TV: Newswire: NBC rebooting Remington Steele as a half-hour comedy

by Sean O'Neal

No doubt reminded of the character’s charms when we brought him in to play us for this Newswire, NBC has ordered a reboot of Remington Steele, the 1980s series in which each week Pierce Brosnan unwrapped the mystery of a new, dashing suit. The updated Remington Steele will actually be a sequel, concerning as it does Olivia Holt, the daughter of Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist’s characters from the original, only this time repackaged as a half-hour comedy. In the contemporary version, Holt reopens the detective agency that her mother ran with the help of a con man who pretended to be her male superior—as this was the 1980s, an era when women were incapable of detecting anything without the aid of a handsome man making wry comments—and soon finds herself falling into “the same hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements of her parents,” even though today’s ...

American Horror Story, "Bitchcraft"

by Todd VanDerWerff

holy shit, one of the characters is Delphine LaLaurie? are you fucking serious? and they show her torturing slaves?
jesus fucking christ

queen

The thing about Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk is I can never quite tell when they’re kidding and when they’re being serious. The two are obviously masters of intentional camp, of moments that are meant to heighten the onscreen action to point out its inherent ridiculousness, but I can never quite decide just where the line between that and the many, many instances of unintentional camp in their various shows begins and ends. For instance: In the opening scene of American Horror Story: Coven, Kathy Bates, as the historical serial killer Madame LaLaurie, chews out one of her daughters for having sex with a slave, and the moment is shot through with the sort of arch campiness that Murphy and Falchuk often apply to sexuality. There’s talk of “rutting” and other archaic terms, and we’re obviously meant to be chuckling, at least a little bit.

But ...

plasma TV light show

He might be using an LG screen, but YouTuber Aussie50 has inadvertently provided a fitting send-off for the final shipments of Panasonic's beloved plasma TVs. The Australian tinkerer ran 2,000 volts through a plasma panel, causing it to fizz and pop like a fireworks display. Here's what it looks like:

The results are mesmerizing. Light courses along seemingly random lines as the screen throws out bright flashes every few seconds. It sounds like a fireworks display, too: the fifteen-minute video is punctuated by both explosive pops and crackles, and Aussie50's increasingly impressed commentary. Naturally, pumping such a high voltage through consumer electronics is wildly unsafe and inadvisable to try at home, but fortunately Aussie50 has a set of other plasma-torturing videos to satisfy your curiosity.

Top Chef, "Rebuilding New Orleans"

by Sonia Saraiya
firehose

"Susan Spicer guest-judges the elimination in support of Habitat for Humanity, which she works with; the food trucks drive out to different work sites, and everyone talks to the workers about how Hurricane Katrina affected them. Leah Chase judges the gumbo quickfire ably all by herself. She’s easily the most charismatic person on the show, gently offering critique left and right while also schooling Padma on how to eat a whole deep-friend prawn. Her, I would like to see again."

"Live crayfish are thrown into a kiddie pool at some point. Just warning you. You may not enter a kiddie pool again without fear."

1) crayfish, gtfo
2) the fuck else you gonna put them in

In “Rebuilding New Orleans” the personalities of the chefs in this season of Top Chef begin to emerge, which means that it’s already becoming clear who are going to be some of the heavyweights for the season. This episode features the season’s first quickfire—a late-night challenge to make gumbo by the next morning—and a food truck challenge, which is the centerpiece, elimination challenge. Carrie from Iowa, who was in the top three last week, sweeps both competitions, getting immunity in the quickfire that she doesn’t even need as she leads the yellow team to victory. It’s early, but it’s hard to imagine that this show isn’t going to be a major launching pad for her career. She’s already managed to impress several celebrity chefs (last week, Emeril; this week, Leah Chase and Susan Spicer. More on them both in a minute ...

Games: The Gameological Society: Beyond: Two Souls wants to be everything, and it certainly is something

by Joe Keiser
firehose

"This is a game that wants you to feel something, anything, so badly that its story throws everything at you in the hopes that something will stick. But it only leaves you reeling. ... When Jodie is preparing herself and her apartment for her first real date, and you’re asked to fret over the small things that seem to mean so much in this situation, everything snaps into focus, and it becomes clear why you would want to make a game this way. But this was probably not how Beyond was meant to turn out, with just a few islands of great storytelling in a sea of unearned melodramatic nonsense. It’s an unintentional B-game, in the campy tradition of a B-movie. But with all these tears, it just isn’t literary."

Review: Beyond: Two Souls

One of my favorite things I learned in high school, a lesson from my ninth-grade English teacher, was that every time you write a story, you are allowed to place in it a single tear. Shedding more, she said, is “not literary,” and bawls would wash away your grade. I love this lesson because it is wrong. There aren’t rules about this kind of thing. But it prevented a generation of melodramatic teenagers from plinking out prose about crying in the rain. And since I’m pretty sure adolescent tales of “I’m sobbing alone because no one understands me” are the No. 1 source of teacher resignations in America, this was one wrong rule for the greater good.

If someone submitted Beyond: Two Souls to my English teacher, they would be kept after class. There is one scene, early in the game, where crying is used effectively. Here ...

Forensic Psychiatrist: Women Kill More Creatively Than Men

firehose

disclaimer: sharing is not endorsement

"Rossmanith: That's correct -- they're mostly about relationships. Women rarely kill strangers. Most conflicts arise in one's own four walls, and they can escalate. It often happens that victims, in a reversal of roles, become perpetrators. ... Some of them have suffered a years of martyrdom. At some point they just unload all of their rage and pent-up tension; sometimes it's triggered by a banal incident. Most women murderers are first-time offenders.

...

SPIEGEL ONLINE: You call this the "dark corner of the soul," and "the dark side of a woman." Are you referring to evil?

Rossmanith: Well, evil feeds off it. This shadow is the unloved, the negative side of one's personality, with all the characterstics that aren't socially acceptable.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But these shadow sides are not just a female feature. They also exist in men.

Rossmanith: Of course! But one already assumes that men have the potential to be violent, brutal and egocentric. They don't have to cover up that side of themselves. But we women are supposed to act as if it doesn't exist in us. The specific female problem is how to deal with this dark side. If it's always suppressed and never acknowledged, you can be overwhelmed by this dark force in drastic moments.

...

SPIEGEL ONLINE: In public there is actually very little talk about female murderers. You write that feminism is the reason for this. Could a male author have allowed himself to say that?

Rossmanith: I think I could only allow myself to write that because I'm a woman. But you know, I am a fan of feminism: It has achieved a lot. It only troubled me that women are always being depicted as more amiable and less prone to violence. In my experience that is simply not the case. In my life, I have often witnessed how incredibly hard women can be. How scheming they can be with each other. I am personally more afraid of the vengeance of women than that of men."

Women rarely commit murder, but forensic psychiatrist Sigrun Rossmanith has treated many female killers. She explains why women's dark side is underestimated.

Hey, Space Rangers HD Is Out Soon

by Craig Pearson
firehose

Ha! Space Rangers! Man, some obscure shit is getting re-released.

By Craig Pearson on October 10th, 2013 at 12:00 pm.

“No release date yet, but I’d expect it soon.” – Alec Meer, April 18th, 2012. And here we are, a year-and-a-half later, finally finding out when Space Rangers HD: A War Apart will be released. To be fair, the remastering of the quietly ace Space Rangers has apparently had a Russian language release in the interim, but I am very Craigcentric: if you release a game in a place I don’t live and in a language I can’t read, then chances are I am not going to play it. Call me arrogant, but that’s just how it is. I’ve already burned through the original and its sequel, but if you’re on the mood for a strange, turn-based top-down space adventure, then it might be for you.

It really is an oddity. A game with a living galaxy that’s full of warring factions, missions, and trade routes. Like any good space game, you can choose to be part of the world, weaving an empire within the turbulent AI sandbox, or you can focus on the story and the fight against the Dominators. It has turn-based space battles, planetside RTS sections, and text adventures hanging off the main space adventures. It is ridiculous.

It’s out on October 17th on Steam.

Costume Quest in iOS getup, out now
It's not a trick - Double Fine really is treating iOS players to Costume Quest, out now on the App Store for $5, with the Grubbins on Ice DLC available for $2 extra. It's an unexpected arrival for the kindergarten RPG that's an oddball mixture of trick-or-treating, turn-based RPG combat, and typical Double Fine humor. That said, it's bang in time for Halloween.

We put four chocolate stars in Costume Quest's candy bucket back in 2010, our review deeming it "sweeter than the candy the game's heroes and villains pursue so relentlessly."

Astronomers Say They've Spotted A Lonesome Planet Without A Sun

Eighty light-years from Earth, there's a world that's just six times more massive than Jupiter, floating all alone without a sun to keep it warm, astronomers reported Wednesday.
