Beer cans are finally getting the creative designs they deserve

by Philip A. Stephenson
Seems only right for beer to go topless.

While canned beer has long outsold bottled beer, cans have traditionally been considered downmarket. But aluminum packaging rose in stature in the early aughts when it was embraced by a new class of US craft breweries. Even bigger brands have caught on, pushing innovative designs that would be impossible with bottles.

According to industry analysts, the new technologies are also changing perceptions of beer cans. Last year cans carried 53.2% of the US beer market, up from 48.3% in 2006, while the share for bottled beer dropped from 41.9% to 36.5% over the same period.

The can decline was over by the mid-aughts, and the versatile packaging has enjoyed an upward trend since 2006, according to information compiled by the Beer Institute.

Estimated-US-Beer-Consumption-by-Packaging-Cans-and-Bottles-Beer-in-Bottles-Beer-in-Cans_chartbuilder

The myth of cans giving a metallic taste to beer goes back to pre-1970s soldered cans, but consumers can’t actually taste the difference between most bottled and canned beers. Cans store beer just as well as bottles since the inside of each can is coated with a water-based polymer, preventing the beer from coming in contact with the aluminum.

Aluminum cans also provide a cheap, impact-resistant, recyclable packaging. They minimize the chance for breakage and offer complete protection against light, which can ”skunk” (or, impart a bitter aroma to) beer.

Lately, beverage makers have been rolling out more variations on the traditional “pull-top” can.

One beer maker, Sly Fox Brewery, dispensed with small-scale modifications to the tab, instead using a “360 lid” design, that removes the tab and top altogether, so drinkers can use each can like a glass.

Another, the Churchkey Can Company, got rid of the pull-top entirely and brought back the flat-topped cans that were standard before the advent of the pull-top in 1959. Consumers have to use a “churchkey” style can opener, as though it were condensed milk.

The Boston Beer Company, the largest US craft brewery and maker of Samuel Adams beer, had sworn off cans for years. This year, it has introduced the “Sam Can,” which features a wide mouth placing the opening closer to the nose and a flared lip that is supposed to deliver more beer aroma.

Other manufacturers have concentrated more on convenience and novelty. Bud Light’s vented can that uses the tab to poke a hole in the top for ease of pouring. The design was tested over the summer in the Louisville, Kentucky market and is scheduled for a national rollout this year.

But not all can innovations have to do with function, some are purely about form. Most notably Budweiser’s “bowtie can,” introduced this year was an attempt to set itself  apart using a unique design—the profile is meant only to echo Budweisers “bow-tie” logo—rather than a particularly functional one. Though, its slightly smaller dimensions do cut .7 oz or  8.5 calories from each can.

Forget concrete—the way to block tsunamis is these spindly trees

by Gwynn Guilford
Residents sift through the shoreline amidst a storm surge brought about by powerful typhoon Haiyan at Legazpi city, Albay province about 520 kilometers ( 325 miles) south of Manila, Philippines Friday Nov. 8, 2013. Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded slammed into the Philippines on Friday, setting off landslides, knocking out power in one entire province and cutting communications in the country's central region of island provinces.(AP Photo/Nelson Salting

When Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in Tacloban, in the Philippines, earlier this month, it whipped up 20-foot tsunami-like tidal surges so powerful that they killed most of the 3,900 people who died in the storm. The people of Tacloban “said ‘we were ready for the wind. We were not ready for the water,’” as presidential aide Rene Alemendras explained. “We tried our very best to warn everybody. But it was really just overwhelming, especially the storm surge.”

This might give you a better idea of why (the surge starts at 0:38):

Some of Haiyan’s destruction could have been prevented. But not with seawalls or dykes—with mangrove trees. Areas near Tacloban where mangrove forests hadn’t been illegally cut fared better, as a Philippines development consultant told Bloomberg. That’s because mangroves provide a natural buffer that slows down inland tidal surges, absorbing 70-90% of a normal wave’s impact. Here’s an animated version of how mangrove forests dampen a tsunami’s force:

The Philippines environment secretary, Ramon Paje, is now spearheading an effort to restore mangrove forests to 380 km (94,000 acres) of unprotected beach, focusing on Tacloban and other areas hard hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

Similar efforts are underway elsewhere in Asia, and have already spared damage to communities in Vietnam. Companies like Danone and Credit Agricole have invested around $4 million in mangrove reforestation on Sumatra, where a 2004 tsunami killed 170,000 people, reports Bloomberg. In exchange, they receive tradable carbon offset credits, since the curlicued aboveground roots of mangroves absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide.

There’s a lot of work to do. In the Philippines alone, coastal development and other factors have pared away four-fifths of the 500,000 hectares (1.2 million acres) of mangrove forest that once lined the archipelago’s coasts.

One of the biggest threats to mangrove forests is shrimp aquaculture. In Thailand, where an estimated 8,000 people died in the 2004 tsunami, shrimp farming has led to the destruction of 65,000 hectares of mangroves (pdf, p.9), reports the Environmental Justice Foundation, a non-governmental organization.

The War on Jesus: American Atheists Want the IRS to Stop Giving Breaks to Churches

by Charles Mudede

A case that is "currently before the United States District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky":

On December 12, 2012, American Atheists and two co-plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Kentucky demanding that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stop giving preferential treatment to churches and religious organizations via the process of receiving non-profit tax-exempt status under the Internal Revue Code (IRC) procedures and definitions.IRS

Groups like American Atheists receive tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) but, because the organization is not classified as religious, it costs American Atheists and other secular non-profits significantly more money each year to maintain that status. In this lawsuit, American atheists and the other plaintiffs are demanding that all tax-exempt organizations, including those characterized as religious by the IRS, have the same requirements to achieve and maintain tax-exempt status.

Christians, before you moan and groan about the war on this and that, recall the words of your very own master: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.” And what does God want? Nothing that's under the sun.

Donald Sutherland Talks "Hunger Games," Hopes Movies Will "Energize" Youth

firehose

spoilers

'I sent a letter to my agent, as I do normally when they send me a script, and it went into the nature of fascism and the nature of totalitarianism and the nature of an oligarchy for the privileged or the 1 percent, and how it mirrored our society, and how we had a young population that had been dormant, certainly, for 30 years. And it was my hope that a film like this, or a series like this, would catalyze them, would energize them. The president had two or three lines at that time, and I said, “I would love to be a part of it.”

So I guess they showed my letter to Gary [Ross, director of The Hunger Games], and he took me on and then we had a lot of talk, and he wrote those three scenes in the rose garden. And those defined the character – they were poetry. So succinct, so economic. And he’s just clear-headed, pragmatic, really smart and old, and he knows that his life is nearly over. He needs to have a successor, he needs to protect his country. And like Lenin, Lenin said to his soldiers, “Don’t go in the street and shoot somebody who’s bad, shoot somebody who’s completely and utterly innocent, and that will terrorize the population into submission.” He’s tyrannical in that sense, and he has the rose because his mouth is so full of blood, because he poisoned his competitors – and so the evidence wouldn’t point to him, he poisoned himself too. Not enough to kill himself, but so it was in his system so he could say, “not me.” So when I came to Catching Fire and Francis [Lawrence, the director], what he had done was so elegant, just really beautiful. And once again I would write long letters, because I read them the other day, saying to Francis, okay, I think this needs to happen and this needs to happen, and he responded. It was a wonderful exchange.'

Donald Sutherland spoke one-on-one with SPINOFF about playing President Snow in the "Hunger Games" movies and his hopes for the franchise.

Men’s overtime hours are keeping the gender pay gap alive

by Lauren Davidson
firehose

However: "Indicating a willingness to work longer hours is one of the most effective ways men can increase their salaries, a 2011 report found, but it had no effect on women’s income or corporate progression."

So it's still sexist

Who works too hard?

One reason men make more money than women is because they work so much overtime.

The gender gap in pay persists due to the fact that men are more likely than women to work 50 hours-plus a week, found a recent study (pdf) published by the American Sociological Review. The extra hours—known as “overwork”—result, on average, in an extra 6% in hourly wages across all occupations. This difference has exacerbated the gender pay gap by around 10%, the study claims.

In 2000, 19% of men worked 50 hours or more per week, compared to 7% of women. The researchers suggested that women are less likely both to enter a job that demands overworking and to stay in it. And despite moves toward equality, women still tend to be more responsible than men for housework and childcare—hours that hardly count on the job but make them plenty overworked, too.

Indicating a willingness to work longer hours is one of the most effective ways men can increase their salaries, a 2011 report found, but it had no effect on women’s income or corporate progression.

Overwork is considered necessary to move up the corporate ladder, and indeed, the study found overworkers are more prevalent in professional and managerial positions. Researchers attribute the higher wages to employers’ perception that overworkers have contributed more to a company’s bottom line, or the impression that they tend to work harder and more productively.

Macy's begins iBeacon shopping test, will send alerts to your iPhone when you enter stores

by Jacob Kastrenakes
firehose

'iBeacons, a type of Bluetooth hotspot introduced in the newest version of iOS', which surely collect no data for advertisers because that's obviously not Apple's business model _at all_

Your iPhone could soon know when you walk into a Macy's, and start telling you what to look for. Macy's is the first major retailer to roll out support for Apple's new iBeacons, a type of Bluetooth hotspot introduced in the newest version of iOS. Within the "coming weeks," iPhone owners who use the retail app Shopkick will start receiving a notification when they walk into either Macy's Herald Square, New York and Union Square, San Francisco locations. The notification will direct them into Shopkick's app, which can alert them to deals and remind them of products they were interested in that are on sale at the store.

So far the trial is limited — Macy's will only ping your iPhone when you actually enter the store. But down the road, Macy's might also ping shoppers on a department-by-department basis, possibly telling them about sneaker sales when they're in the shoe section, or even recommending nearby products they could have an interest in. The iPhone integration is only a trial for now, but if it can actually get shoppers buying more clothes and goods, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Macy's rolling support out to additional locations.

Head-to-head: Everything you need to know in the PS4 vs. Xbox One battle

by Kyle Orland
firehose

XBOne is quieter; PS4 runs at a lower temp
Visual fidelity is a wash, though PS4's launch titles are higher-res
XBOne narrowly edges PS4 in controller ergonomics; PS4 narrowly edges XBOne in controller functionality
XBOne has better menus and media consumption features, PS4 has better media production and streaming-to-mobile features
Both have shitty launch titles; XBOne's future exclusives look more promising, but that's a dangerous advantage to have

Verdict: Don't buy either
"We're reaching a real point of diminishing returns in console hardware upgrades. Your current Xbox 360 and PS3 will both see major multiplatform releases through the next holiday season—maybe even further than that—before they really start to look long in the tooth and lose significant developer support.

Plus, I'm guessing that there are at least a few games in your current console’s library that you haven’t had a chance to play through yet. Now’s a great time to get those titles for dirt cheap (or even to pick up the competing system to try out some of the exclusives you’ve been missing).
...
if you held a gun to my head and said I had to pick a system today, I'd probably point toward the Xbox One—primarily for its game lineup and partly for its interface and the still-in-their-infancy media features. (Also, I'm not currently budget-conscious enough to mind the price difference too much.) Once you calmed down and lowered the gun, though, I'd tell you to wait and see."

Our comprehensive reviews of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One from the last week total more than 10,000 words combined. Add in coverage of various games, developer thoughts on the features of both systems, and various bits of news, opinion, and historical analysis, and that's probably 10,000 more words about these newcomers in the last month alone... and that doesn't even get into the pre-launch coverage we've been running since Sony officially kicked things off in February.

All that should hopefully satisfy people who want a comprehensive take on what both systems bring to the table. But other would-be gamers may just want a quick, comparative take on which console they should get. If that's you, you're in luck—we've summarized the competing features and attractions of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in a relatively concise (but still detailed) format.

Hardware

Judged purely as a black box, the PS4 is the clear winner. The system is significantly smaller than the Xbox One and about three pounds lighter, which is nice if you care about taking it out of your entertainment center to travel with it. The PS4 just plain looks better, too, with striking angles and a front ridge that elegantly hides ports and the disc slot. It's a huge improvement over the industrial boxiness of the Xbox One.

Fantasy football sit/start advice, Week 12: Roddy White is bench material

by James Brady
firehose

fuck the falcons
fuck roddy white

Roddy White should play on Thursday against the New Orleans Saints. We break down the fantasy implications.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White hasn't looked like himself all season, presumably because he has not been healthy all season. White has struggled all year, but he's been practicing and should be available for the Falcons when they take on the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football.

The question is whether or not he'll be effective. White injured his ankle in the preseason, and sustained a hamstring injury early on in the regular season. Despite this, he played through his injuries multiple times and was used primarily as a decoy. Before the team's bye week, he exceeded 30 yards only once, and didn't break 50 yards at all.

He missed three games -- snapping a streak of consecutive games played, a streak that he wanted to keep alive and may have been responsible for him playing through injury early in the season -- but has played in the team's last two. He had one reception for 20 yards against the Seattle Seahawks, and three receptions for 36 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a week ago.

Fantasy Impact: White managed his first touchdown reception of the season against the Buccaneers on Sunday, but he also had a fumble. He's been wildly ineffective, with under 200 yards in seven games. He went from being one of the top receivers in the league to being an afterthought. The Saints have a strong pass defense. If you haven't cut him yet, White should ride your bench in Week 12.

NCAA sues EA over likeness settlement [Update]

by Mike Suszek
firehose

rofl

The NCAA has sued Electronic Arts and the Collegiate Licensing Company over its proposed settlement with student athletes from late September, Bloomberg reported. The $40 million settlement was in regards to the use of student athlete likeness, an ongoing legal dispute that stemmed back to May 2009. As a result of the string of lawsuits, EA canceled its college football game that was set to launch in 2014, which started with the NCAA's decision to not renew its licensing contract with the publisher in July.

Filed in a Georgia state court on November 4, the lawsuit from the NCAA alleges that EA did not agree to compensate the NCAA for losses related to legal claims from student athletes, and that the publisher did not have liability insurance to do so. EA's proposed $40 million settlement would negate the company's contractual obligations to idemnify the NCAA for any liability and attorney fees related to the lawsuits.

We have contacted both EA and the CLC for comment.

Update: A Collegiate Licensing Company representative told Joystiq that "CLC is caught in the middle of a dispute between NCAA and EA which should not involve us. CLC has valued relationships with both the NCAA and EA and while we hope they can soon resolve their dispute, we see no reason for CLC to be involved."

The NCAA has declined to comment on the story.

Update #2: EA has also declined to comment on the story.

Coulrophobia Begone: Devolver To Publish Dropsy

by Adam Smith
firehose

the game at least partially designed by joke posts on Something Awful that's now on its fourth? fifth? Kickstarter

By Adam Smith on November 21st, 2013 at 11:00 am.

This is an odd little tale. Dropsy is a creepy but carefree clown living in a grotesque world. He has adventures of the pointy, clicky variety, although without the swarms of words that usually accompany such journeys. The people and things of Dropsy’s world communicate “through visual icons”, most of which are probably also creepy and/or grotesque. The clown is trying to clear his name following a fatal circus fire. Those three words rapidly conjure the odour of burning grease paint and the sound of screaming elephants. That’s not the odd part of the story though – the odd part is how the game’s production has unfolded. A failed $25,000 Kickstarter was followed by a successful $14,000 attempt, which is still running, and now Devolver Digital have picked the game up for publication, offering “additional development, marketing, and production funds”.

This video explains how the traditional adventure style gels with Dropsy’s ‘open world’.

Devolver’s CFO, the inimitable Fork Parker, had this to say: “You had me at visual dialog. We’re going to save a boatload of cash on localization.”

Wonderful.
