Holiday Gift Guide: Wooden Replica 'Adventure Time' Swords, Batarangs And More

by Chris Sims

TheSilveredBlade on Etsy

When it comes to the holiday gift-giving season, comic book readers are notoriously difficult to shop for. I mean, most of us are down at the shop buying our favorite stuff every single week, so when the time comes for people who like us to get us something we want, well, a lot of times we already have it. That’s why we’re stepping in with a public service, bringing you comics-related items sure to make the season brighter, whether you’re browsing for a gift or just looking for something to drop hints about so that you don’t get stuck with a random assortment of back issues again.

Today, we’re going into the world of handmade pop culture artifacts with a look at the wooden swords of Etsy’s The Silvered Blade!

ITEM: Various stuff from The Silvered Blade

CLASSIFICATION: Replica weaponry, decorations and props

AVAILABILITY: $30 to $150 on Etsy

Given the amount of ComicsAlliance content that’s about Adventure Time in one form or another, it goes without saying that we’re big fans of the show. We’re not alone either, and there’s plenty of things out there to pick up for fans this year. DVDs, action figures, brand new video games, all that stuff is good. But if you want something a little more unique than, say, a store-bought Finn hat — and if you have a c-note or two burning a hole in your pocket — then The Silvered Blade’s replica weapons make a pretty fantastic unique gift for AT superfans.

The hand-painted replicas are made from birch plywood, and while they’re intended as “decorations or props for cosplay,” the official description points out that they’re fun for LARPing too, if your concept of fun includes LARPing. I’m not sure how well that translates to their ability to be swung around without breaking, so they might be better suited for older fans than kids, but there’s no denying that they look great.

All the weapons are flat, but painted with a trompe l’oeil effect to give them the illusion of depth that actually makes them look like you just reached into a cartoon and grabbed them, and there are a lot of options to choose from. There’s Finn’s default weapon, Scarlet the Golden Sword, plus the Demon Blood sword that he and Jake got from their dad…

And even Marceline’s Axe:

There are other shows and games represented too, including Skyrim and The Legend of Zelda, but the most important for our purposes is undoubtedly the Arkham series, which has given us the option of purchasing hand-crafted Batarangs:

NASA snubs billionaire's proposed manned mission to Mars in 2017

by Rich McCormick

Dennis Tito wants to send two astronauts to Mars as soon as Christmas 2017, but NASA — from whom Tito's non-profit Inspiration Mars organization needs $700 million in funding — has snubbed the American billionaire. In an email statement sent to Inspiration Mars, NASA's David Weaver said "the agency is willing to share technical and programmatic expertise with Inspiration Mars, but is unable to commit to sharing expenses with them."

In addition to financial assistance, the billionaire needs to use NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) to power his organization's planned mission — technology still under development, and funded by the federal government. Weaver also says Tito's aim of getting humans to Mars in the planned time-frame is unrealistic. "Inspiration Mars' proposed schedule is a significant challenge due to life support systems, space radiation response, habitats, and the human psychology of being in a small spacecraft for over 500 days." Tito's organization is pushing for a manned mission to launch between Christmas 2017 and January 5th, 2018, to take advantage of planetary positioning to make the distance between Earth and Mars shorter. The next window of opportunity for such an alignment will reportedly occur in 2021.

NASA's own manned mission to Mars is planned for the 2030s

NASA's own schedule puts a manned mission to Mars somewhere in the 2030s. That slower pace — understandable in an agency that recently had its web presence turned off by a government shutdown — was hinted at in October when the space agency released a cautious statement reiterating that it had "not made any commitments to Inspiration Mars related to launch vehicles." Although Weaver says NASA remains "open to further collaboration as their proposal and plans for a later mission develop," don't expect Inspiration Mars to be taking humans to the red planet this decade.

Virgin America now lets you use electronics during takeoff and landing

by Tom Warren

Turning off your cellphone or gadgets during a flight is almost over. Virgin America is now allowing passengers to use most personal electronics on all phases of flights on its aircraft. It’s the latest US airline to do so, leaving Frontier Airlines as the last major holdout.

Cleared for all categories of flight

Virgin America has also gone a step further with its gate-to-gate support. The airline says its Airbus A320-family aircraft is the first to be cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for personal electronics usage during all categories of flight. Virgin America’s engineers have tested personal device usage during all categories of flight, including approaches with limited visibility and "technically complicated" landings that are completely automated.

Since the FAA ruled radio signals from personal electronic devices didn’t post a threat to aircraft safety during takeoff and landing, the majority of airlines have quickly changed their policies. Delta, JetBlue, American, United, Alaska, US Airways, Southwest Airlines, and now Virgin America have all loosened their restrictions on the use of personal electronics during flights. Virgin America notes that in-flight crew will still have the final say on what’s permitted on each flight, but that you "won’t have to take off your Google Glass" or "put that e-reader down!"

NYPD Urges Bar Owners Not to Serve Santa at 2013 NYC SantaCon

by EDW Lynch

NYPD says no to SantaCon

DNAinfo New York reports that a New York City Police Department precinct in Manhattan has contacted bars in Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen to urge them not to serve Santa during this year’s upcoming NYC Santacon. SantaCon has grown from a small 1994 Cacophony Society event in San Francisco to an annual international event that last year occurred in more than 50 cities. The 2012 NYC SantaCon provoked a pre-emptive backlash and, afterwards, angry complaints by residents. The NYC SantaCon is scheduled for December 14—as is common SantaCon practice, no starting location or route has yet been released.

Iceland has the highest rate of antidepressant use in the world—by a long shot

by Lily Kuo
Not a happy place.

Rich, developed countries are consuming an average of 10% more antidepressants than about a decade ago, according to a report released on Nov. 21 from the OECD.

The increase has a lot to do with growing awareness about depression, which in turn has made treating the illness with drugs more socially acceptable. Big spikes in a few standout countries, the report says, may also “be linked to the insecurity created by the financial crisis” (pdf p.102). In Spain and Portugal, consumption rose 23% and 20% between 2007 and 2011, respectively. The UK’s rate doubled between 2000 and 2011.

The highest antidepressant-consuming country in the world? Iceland, where all three of the country’s main banks failed early on in the crisis. At almost twice the OECD average, its antidepressant consumption rose almost 50% over the observed period to 106 doses a day for every 1,000 people. (Some academics think Icelanders may consume more antidepressants because alternative treatments like psychotherapy aren’t as popular.)

x

Ironically, the country is now considered model of recovery in Europe, since its economy is growing faster than others in the region thanks in part to a rebound in fishing and tourism. And yet Icelandic households are still wallowing in debt and shrinking salaries. The country’s current estimated rate of depression—between 15% and 25% of its residents are expected to experience depression at some point—is hardly model behavior.

Now you can own the Red Sox's beard balls

by Bill Hanstock

great

Presenting Red Sox Beard Balls to bid on and own. Hope you brought your screaming pants!

See that up there? See that disgusting, horrifying pile of pubes behind glass? That's Shane Victorino's beard hair, lovingly fashioned into a ball and mounted for all time. And you can own it. Yep, a custom-mounted quantity of Red Sox beard hair, auctioned off on eBay, with all proceeds going to Movember.

Bidding for SHANF's chin scruff is already up to $465 at the time I am writing this. Hey, here's David Ortiz's face-growth. It's up to $760. That's American dollars. But we can all admit: a small price to pay for something that will last forever, quietly sitting there and still being a mound of hair long after you're dead and in the ground. Unless you're buying it to crack open and eat and smell and roll around in or whatever. Hey; no judging here. It's for a good cause.

Cell phone calls likely coming to planes—don’t sit next to a loud talker

by Jon Brodkin

aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

With the government having cleared Wi-Fi for use on all phases of airplane flights, the next step is apparently allowing in-flight voice calls.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler today said he has "circulated a proposal to expand consumer access and choice for in-flight mobile broadband. Modern technologies can deliver mobile services in the air safely and reliably, and the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules. I look forward to working closely with my colleagues, the FAA, and the airline industry on this review of new mobile opportunities for consumers.”

When a proposal is circulated, the other commissioners review it and then decide whether to take action. It's already on the agenda for the commission's next meeting on December 12.

Medical Diagnostic System Uses Bees to Detect Signs of Disease in a Person’s Breath

by EDW Lynch
firehose

no, not the bees

Susana Soares Trains Bees to Detect Disease in a Person's Breath

Designer Susana Soares has developed a simple diagnostic system that uses honey bees to detect traces of cancer or other diseases in a person’s breath. Developed during a three-year project titled simply, “Bee’s,” the system involves training bees to use their extremely acute sense of smell to detect odors in breath that are associated with certain diseases. The bees can be trained in 10 minutes by exposing them to an odor and then feeding them sugar water—this makes the bees associate the odor with food. The bees are then placed in a two-chambered glass diagnostic device. A person breathes into a diagnostic chamber, and if their breath contains the specific odor, the bees in the second chamber will fly toward the odor. The system could provide a simple low-cost diagnostic tool for healthcare providers.

It's Pappy time

by djempirical
firehose

fuck your whisky

sluicing shared this story from kottke.org.

This year's allocation of Pappy Van Winkle's cult bourbon was recently released. There's never enough supply to meet demand, which means two things: lines rivaling iPhone release day queues and high resale prices.

Pappy Line

On Craigslist in NYC, bottles of Pappy are for sale for hundreds and even thousands of dollars. One seller is offering a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year for $1,250...that's right around $80 for each 1.5 oz pour (without any markup).

Pappy Prices

Luckily, there are some close-but-not-quite alternatives. As this article on the bourbon family tree notes, the W.L. Weller 12 Year contains the same whiskey as Pappy 15 Year, but aged three fewer years. It can be readily found online for around $26 a bottle. To bump it perhaps a little closer to actual, Bourbonr has concocted what they call Poor Man's Pappy:

Pick up a bottle of both W.L. Weller 12 (90 proof) and Old Weller Antique 107 (107 proof). They will cost around $20-$30 each. Start off with a 50:50 mixture of the two Bourbons. The easiest way to do this is with a digital scale. If you don't have a scale just add a tablespoon from both Bourbons to your glass. With a 50:50 ratio you have a 98.5 proof delicious Bourbon.

Next, try a different ratio. Try mixing 60:40 Antique to 12. The Bourbon blend is now 100.2 proof and much closer in taste to the 107 proof Pappy 15.

Anyone else tried this? Thoughts?

Saints vs. Falcons 2013 final score: New Orleans 'D' turns up pressure for 17-13 win

by Louis Bien
firehose

lol that kid
fuck the falcons
fuck your team, kid, cry harder

The Saints' defense clamped down on Matt Ryan and the Falcons in the second half, giving New Orleans a 17-13 win in Atlanta.

The New Orleans Saints didn't make it pretty, but they ultimately came out on top against Atlanta Falcons, 17-13, on Thursday night. The offense was unable to capitalize on long drives in the second half, but the defense stepped up and applied constant pressure on Matt Ryan, stifling the Falcons' offense and allowing Drew Brees and Co. to get away with a win despite a relatively quiet performance.

The Saints took a 14-13 lead at halftime. They could have taken a deficit into the locker room, but the Falcons settled for field goals on long drives to the 21- and 6-yard lines, respectively. The Saints were able to finish on their two long drives. Drew Brees had two touchdown passes in the first half, finding Benjamin Watson in the end zone on a one-yard toss and Jimmy Graham for a 44-yard score.

In the second half, neither team had much offensive success. The Saints kicked a field goal at the end of a 55-yard drive in the third quarter, and those three points remained the only scoring in the half. The Saints offense didn't need to do much more than eat clock, however.

The Saints defense turned the heat up on Ryan in the second half, sacking him four times to stall promising drives. A five-yard sack forced the Falcons into a 3rd-and-15 just before the two-minute warning. They failed to convert, then Matt Bryant missed a 52-yard field goal attempt to solidify the Saints' 17-13 lead.

Riseup_medium

The Saints improved to 9-2 on the season, while the Falcons fell to 2-9. The game was closer than the records suggest, but the Saints stay alive in their quest to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Fantasy studs and duds

Drew Brees didn't put up astronomical numbers, but he still managed 278 yards and two touchdowns. Jimmy Graham was once again his biggest beneficiary, catching five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Ryan played well, passing for 297 yards, but his lack of scores kept his fantasy day from becoming great.

Injury report

Saints defensive end Glenn Foster had to be carted off the field at the start of the third quarter with an apparent leg injury. There is no word yet on his status.

Did they cover?

The Saints were 9.5-point favorites at kickoff, according to Odds Shark. They won by four, so they did not cover.

What's next?

Roddy White contract: Falcons WR expected to sign extension

by James Dator

and fuck the falcons

Roddy White is expected to remain with the team that drafted him.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is expected to sign a long-term deal to remain with the organization, according to the NFL Network.

Ian Rapoport reports that he expects the sides to reach a "reasonable extension," but there is no indication on what potential terms would be at this time. Deciding on terms will be complicated by the cash-strapped Falcons, who are expected to have salary cap issues in 2014. White held out the last time they tried to work on an extension, finally settling for a 6-year deal that made him the league's fifth-highest paid wide receiver.

The Falcoholic: Mike Smith safe for 2014

White is on pace for the worst season of his career. Offensive struggles paired with a series of injuries have created a scenario where it's unlikely he'll pass 400 yards receiving this season -- a career first. His best game came in a Week 5 matchup against the New York Jets where he caught four passes for 45 yards, but fumbled the ball.

Discussion of extending White could be influenced by the season-ending injury to Julio Jones. Atlanta is in dire need of offensive consistency entering an offseason where Jones will be recovering and tight end Tony Gonzalez is almost certainly retiring.

Uprights aren't meant to be dunked on, apparently.

We've all seen clips of basketball players like Shaq breaking backboards with their dunks back before the NBA started making breakaway rims. But we haven't seen the same thing translated to football, until Thursday night at the Georgia Dome when Jimmy Graham's dunking TD celebration got the uprights a bit askew:

Bendy_medium

And it didn't snap back:

Bent1_medium

Personally, I think it would've been best if they'd just kinda left it that way and forced kickers to adjust. But apparently there are "rules" and stuff about the uprights being ... you know ... upright.

So they had to get out the bubble level:

Don't hang on the rim, Jimmy. That's a technical foul.

Feds say Silk Road suspect’s computer shows he (thought he) plotted 6 murders

The US government claims these are Ross Ulbricht's fraudulent identification cards.
United States Attorney's Office, Southern District of NY

New court filings against Ross Ulbricht, the young Texan accused of being the mastermind behind the notorious Silk Road website, show new and compelling evidence that he was the man at the helm.

Documents formally introduced Thursday morning in a Southern District of New York federal court include screenshots of Ulbricht’s computer as it was seized at the time of his arrest in San Francisco on October 1, 2013. The documents appear to show that Ulbricht was logged in, via Tor, as the administrator of the Silk Road.

A spokesperson for the court sent Ars a copy of the documents on Thursday afternoon, hours after Ulbricht's request to be released on a $1 million bail was denied.

Microsoft pulls offline USB updating instructions for Xbox One [Update: Microsoft responds]

by Mike Suszek
firehose

keep on fucking it up, guys

Microsoft pulled its support page that instructed users how to update their Xbox One systems offline using a USB drive. We've included an image of the cached support page above, which is no longer available to view.

The Xbox Support page instructed Xbox One owners with a two gigabyte USB stick to download one of two compressed update files to their computers, then unzip them to the root of the USB drive. The process then had owners holding the bind and eject buttons while turning their consoles on, releasing the two buttons once they hear two start-up tones. According to the now-unavailable support page, that last step told the Xbox One to search for an update from a USB drive, a procedure that isn't part of the system's initial booting process.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson tells Joystiq that "the site was not an alternative way to take the Day One update and customers still need to connect to Xbox Live for the update. Because of the complexity of this customer support process we've actually removed the page and we will work with customers directly to make sure they have a smooth experience."
