Joystiq remembers its favorite Xbox 360 experiences

by Joystiq Staff
firehose

that time it died
that other time it died
that time the replacement died the day after it arrived

With the release of the Xbox One, Microsoft joins the new generation of gaming consoles alongside Sony and Nintendo. Though the Xbox 360 still has at least three years of life left in it, the Xbox One moves into the spotlight as Microsoft's chief gaming console. Partly to pay homage to this past generation of gaming and partly to bid farewell, some of the Joystiq staff have gathered to offer their favorite memories with the Xbox 360.

Of course, these are just a few of our favorites and not indicative of exactly just how many wonderful games we've been able to enjoy on the Xbox 360 (Xav said his pick would be playing Shadow Complex, for example!). Share your favorites in the comments below - that is, if you're not too busy Snapping Netflix on your Xbox One right now.

Make sure to watch our PS3 Memories video feature, and stay tuned for a look back at the Wii next week!

Harvard's Jaron Wilson ejected for targeting hit against Yale

by Ben Knibbe
firehose

"The hit is not reviewable in the Ivy League, which has not instituted instant replay in order to review questionable calls."

Even the Ivy League's big rivalry game is subject to new NCAA rules.

Harvard’s senior safety Jaron Wilson was ejected for a targeting hit in the second quarter of Saturday’s Harvard-Yale game.

Harvardtargeting_medium

Wilson was covering the deep middle of the field when Yale senior QB Henry Furman lofted a pass to sophomore WR Mathew Rubino. Wilson came from his deep safety position to knock the ball loose from Rubino, but was flagged in the process.

Wilson, playing his final career game, appeared to be leading with his shoulder, and may have hit the upper back of Rubino, not the helmet. The hit is not reviewable in the Ivy League, which has not instituted instant replay in order to review questionable calls.

The drive 54-yard drive came up fruitless for the Bulldogs when it ended in a missed 39-yard field goal by junior kicker Kyle Kazzetta.

Harvard was winning 21-0 behind three touchdowns by sophomore RB Paul Stanton Jr, two receiving and one rushing.

Welcome to New Orleans

Future Drinking: Portland FINALLY Getting a Drunken Laundromat:

After years of looking longingly at the drunker peoples of the north, cozy in their Sit N Spin (R.I.P.!), it looks like the laundryless people of Portland are finally getting a drunken laundromat. Owner Morgan Gary has put through an OLCC application for Spin Laundry at 740 N. Fremont, near North Mississippi Avenue, advertised as an “Eco-Friendly Laundromat, Bar & Cafe” with washing machines that text you when you’re load’s almost done. The taplist looks sincerely minimalist: a pair of brews. But that’s two more than usual. To the future!

If you invent a tasty new fake meat, but it isn't really like any particular real meat like beef or pork or chicken, I'd suggest giving it the name of a mythical creature. I'd like to eat unicorn or hydra or phoenix or dragon.

→ The Dirty Secret Behind the Salesforce $1M Hackathon on Medium

firehose

lolololololol

A Medium post by Alicia Liu on Medium. Did I mention this was on Medium?

To me, it was just another marketing gimmick, like so many corporate-sponsored hackathons before it, to trick otherwise sane developers into working for free—with copious amounts of junk food and caffeine and the lure of dubious prizes—to develop apps on top of APIs and platforms they otherwise wouldn’t bother with.

Turns out her suspicions, which were published on Medium, were correct. But Salesforce’s execution was much shittier and sleazier than most people would have predicted. See the Hacker News comments as well.

While Salesforce got a bunch of free ideas out of this, they also burned the developer community badly, which is going to hurt their recruiting (and maybe retention, too). I can’t imagine this will prove worthwhile in the long run.

I wonder how Mattt Thompson feels about the company he works for now, after he spent some of his immense credibility to promote this event. I wouldn’t hold it against him — I’m sure he didn’t know this would happen — but he should sure hold it against them.

Historical Map: The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, 1956 A simply...

firehose

trains~

Historical Map: The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, 1956

A simply gorgeous mid-1950s map of the AT&SF’s passenger routes, taken from a promotional brochure produced in conjunction with Disneyland, which is shown prominently to the right of the map.

The brochure was ostensibly an introduction to the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad at Disneyland, then only a year old. Understandably, the AT&SF — who had basically bankrolled construction of the 5/8th scale railroad — were keen to get some return in their investment. As a result, much of the brochure is actually given over to advertising their “new and modern” rail services.

The whole brochure opens out to display this fantastic map, where Texas and Oklahoma are represented by scratchily drawn cattle,  oil derricks and chemical plants, while the Grand Canyon becomes a large hole in the ground that a careless Native American is about to walk into. On top of these charming little drawings is a simplified route map of the AT&SF’s lines, stretching from San Francisco to Chicago.

Our rating: Gorgeous 1950s design sensibilities, although definitely more an advertisement than a practical, useful map. Four stars.

4 Stars!

Chekov returns in this trailer for fan project 'Star Trek: Renegades'

by Kwame Opam
firehose

huh. this is happening?

While J.J. Abrams has recently taken the Star Trek mythos to new heights on the big screen, there hasn't been a new series on television for more than seven years. Star Trek: Renegades seems poised to change all that. After raising more than $200,000 on Kickstarter and Indigogo, the pilot is currently in post-production, with a slated release date for summer or fall of 2014. The first trailer, released this week, is just a taste of what's to come.

The pilot is the work of the team behind the fan-created miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. It will star Walter Koenig and Tim Russ, reprising their roles as Chekov and Tuvok, respectively. According to the team's website, the series promises to be "bold, edgy and a little dark." We're not sure if that means Battlestar Galactica dark, but hopefully it's a little edgier than Voyager.

Fog Creek Software: Senior Designer, Developer Tools Unit

firehose

"Remote allowed"

Resized_logo

Location: New York, NY
URL: http://www.fogcreek.com/

Fog Creek is a small, friendly software company in New York City. We specialize in web-based tools for software developers and businesses, and are seeking a focused, energetic, and multi-talented senior designer to take our Developer Tools products to the next level.

Key Responsibilities
This is not your average layouts-and-pixels design job. As the Developer Tools Senior Designer, you will lead the incremental design (r)evolution of one of our two flagship products, FogBugz and Kiln. You will:

  • Develop an ongoing strategy for bringing greater usability, delight and beauty into these existing products.
  • Play an integral part in the business’s growth by developing a keen understanding of our customers, product history and business challenges.
  • Work closely with our development team to prioritize, design, and execute product enhancements and features.
  • Support development efforts by authoring production-ready front-end code.
  • Interface regularly with customer support to keep abreast of customer issues and needs. Be a strong advocate for the user. Embody empathy.
  • Produce a variety of design deliverables to clearly communicate design intent in the best way you deem possible. This may include wireframes, written specifications, interactive prototypes, and pixel-perfect mockups.
  • Collect, analyze and make use of feedback from a variety of sources, including the development team, customer support, business stakeholders and actual users.
As if all this weren’t enough, you will also play an important part in defining the culture of design within Fog Creek. You will have the opportunity to give company-wide “Tech Talks” to share your expertise, invite design-related speakers of your choosing to give workshops, write articles on the widely followed Fog Creek blog, and anything else you can imagine!

Requirements
  • 5-10 years of full-time experience designing consumer- or business-facing digital products
  • Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS; JQuery a plus
  • Impeccable visual design skills
  • Proficiency with a graphics editing toolset of your choice
  • Familiarity with a variety of user feedback and data gathering methods, such as A/B testing, contextual inquiry, user interviews, surveys, and website analytics
  • Flexibility to adapt in a fast-paced, process-agnostic work environment—and the ability to invent your own process to fit project goals
  • Ability to wisely balance business, design, and technical constraints
  • Insatiable curiosity for learning
  • Excellent command of verbal and written English
  • Remote allowed

Our Values
Curious about Fog Creek? Here are some things we believe in:
  • No command-and-control management: You set your own path. Define your own goals. Grow your skills in a way that satisfies you (while still achieving team objectives, of course). Through it all, management is here to support, not dictate.
  • Treat the customer right: We always do right by our paying customers. For instance, if they aren’t satisfied for any reason, we give them their money back, even if similar companies don’t. This ethic permeates all we do, from customer support to sales to the way we design our products.
  • Respect the flow: Every creative thinker knows the value of being “in the flow.” At Fog Creek, you will get an office with a door that closes. If you are in the flow and don’t want to be interrupted, we get that, and you won’t be.
  • We really mean collaboration: Ever had the experience of throwing your designs over “The Wall” and then watching it disintegrate? Fog Creek takes collaboration seriously. You will work one-on-one with hyper-talented developers and escort every last detail of your designs through to release.
If you believe in these things too, we'd love to meet you.

Working Remotely
All of Fog Creek's teams are geographically distributed. Every meeting takes place online (using chatrooms and Google Hangouts), and almost all of our work-related communication takes place on the Internet. That means that you can work from almost anywhere in the world, provided:

  • You have access to broadband, stable, low-latency Internet, suitable for videoconferencing
  • You have a dedicated, quiet place to work
  • Your workday overlaps New York afternoons (1700 - 2200 GMT)
  • We have a way to pay you legally wherever you live

Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Free gym membership
  • Comprehensive health insurance plan
  • 401(k) retirement plan with matching
  • Profit-sharing plan
  • Generous parental leave policy
  • Flextime
  • Four weeks paid vacation
  • All-expense-paid technical conferences
... and while you're in New York:
  • Free MetroCard
  • Free lunch
  • Free soft drinks and snacks

In my latest post for Details.com, I took a look at the multitude of ways that people are using breakfast cereal in cocktails. Initially I thought I'd only find it in a few places but I think there are more than a dozen mentioned in the story and they're located everwhere from London to Bordeaux to Miami to San Diego. Some folks are serving them up in bowls with a spoon, while others are infusing cereal into milk or directly into liquor. Check it out over at Details.com.

tl;dr: deduplication services

The logistics needed to develop a complex game like Battlefield 4 were certainly not child's play. The complete game files were as large as 50GB, and future games with more advanced graphics for the new Xbox One console are likely to be even bigger.
