Les Miles doesn't know how Thanksgiving got here

by Bill Hanstock

The LSU coach's weekly press conference kicked off on a high note. We break down his ramblings.

From great moments in press conference transcripts:

This opening paragraph from Les Miles’ Monday presser transcript is just fantastic. pic.twitter.com/719SSFklX9

Let's go ahead and investigate a bit further, shall we?

Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving, Les!

Did it come quickly?

Nope, fourth Thursday, just like always! Although Hanukkah is super early this year. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I don't know what happened. I don't know how it happened.

This is generally how episodes of "Intervention" start.

I mean, really, it just seemed like months flew by and suddenly -- maybe it didn't where you're at

uh Les time pretty much works the same all over

but where I'm at, it just (snapping finger) happened so fast.

Les Miles is the quantum coach. You can know where he is, or how fast he's moving, but not both things at the same time.

We have a lot to be thankful for.

Like beating A&M

The health of our families,

beating A&M,

relationships that we've built over time.

but mostly beating A&M

I think we all need to take stock.

Well sure; how else are you going to make the stuffing?

Yahoo sends rambling memo demanding employees start using its webmail

"For others, you might now be running in your head to a well worn path of justified resistance, phoning up the ol’ gang, circling the hippocampian wagons of amygdalian resistance. Hold on a sec, pilgrim."

"At this point in your life, Outlook may be familiar, which we can often confuse with productive or well designed. Certainly, we can admire the application for its survival, an anachronism of the now defunct 90s PC era, a pre-web program written at a time when NT Server terrorized the data center landscape with the confidence of a T-Rex born to yuppie dinosaur parents who fully bought into the illusion of their son’s utter uniqueness because the big-mouthed, tiny-armed monster infant could mimic the gestures of The Itsy-Bitsy Pterodactyl. There was a similar outcry when we moved away from Outlook’s suite-mates in the Microsoft Office dreadnaught. But whether it’s familiarity, laziness or simple stubbornness dressed in a cloak of Ayn Randian Objectivism, the time has come to move on, commrade [sic...go deep in this pun, it is layered]."

"Please note, on the mobile side, corp mail is not yet supported in our Mail app for Android or iOS, but that will change (PB&J!). And, like all dogfood offerings, there is a feedback link in the product. Use it generously so we can make the improvements to make Yahoo Mail the unquestioned inbox champion of the world. I pitty [sic] the fool who resists."

Who could resist this productivity paradise?

An internal Yahoo memo divulged by AllThingsD shows that the company is not doing so well at two things: dogfooding Yahoo Mail and writing internal memos. In a message filled with casual verbiage and mixed metaphors, Yahoo Senior Vice President of Communications Jeff Bonforte and Chief Information Officer Randy Roumillat co-implore their employees to stop using the company’s prior gold standard, Outlook, in order to help test the recently relaunched Yahoo Mail product.

According to the missive, 25 percent of employees have been routing their office communications through Yahoo Mail—good, but not enough, say Bonforte and Roumillat. “It’s a matter of principle to use the products we make,” they write. “It’s time for the remaining 75 percent to make the switch.”

The memo then goes on at some length to justify the switch, calling the resistant employees phone-using, wagon-circling pilgrims, then sailors, and then comrades. Bonforte plays Tom Cruise as Jerry Maguire in Jerry Maguire. Microsoft Office is a dreadnought. Ayn Rand appears as Ayn Rand. NT Server is a “T-Rex born to yuppie dinosaur parents.” It’s not entirely clear who or what “The Itsy-Bitsy Pterodactyl” is, but it’s either a metaphor for Yahoo, the Internet, or life itself.

Twitch cracks down on inappropriate PS4 streamers

by Kyle Orland

continued

In our review of the PS4 hardware, we called the ability to stream live gameplay over the Internet one of the system's most appealing features. Not all users are using that feature appropriately, though, leading streaming service Twitch to crack down on PS4 streamers who fail to meet its terms of service.

Most of the problematic content involves The Playroom, a pre-installed PS4 app that lets PlayStation Camera owners broadcast a full-screen image of their entire living room, complete with robotic companions wandering about. Some users took advantage of this unexpected feature to great effect, hosting an impromptu call-in show that attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers. Others used it to broadcast footage of an unconscious strip show (somewhat NSFW) and other inappropriate content.

One of the Twitch tweets.

Twitch banned the account responsible for the strip show almost immediately and also began shutting down Playroom streams that feature inappropriate comments as well. The service went to the trouble of reiterating a summary of its terms of service in a series of tweets over the weekend.

New True Detective Trailer!

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey

welcome to Louisiana

Weirdly, January is now my favorite month for TV—primarily due to the return of Justified... but this time I'm also extra excited for the new HBO drama True Detective starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (debuting January 12)! Check out this description from Deadline...

[True Detective] is descried as an elevated serial narrative with multiple perspectives and time frames. It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened. The concept is for the 8-episode first season to resolve the mystery at hand, with subsequent seasons using same structure but new characters and story.

And check out the new trailer. I am sooooo all over this.

"Well-Made: Back to Black Mesa" @ PRACTICE 2013

by noreply@blogger.com (Robert Yang)

"Half-Life is magical and interesting and subtle, but not in the way that gamer culture mythologizes it."

Very special thanks for Frank Lantz for inviting me to speak, and to Charles Pratt / Kevin Cancienne for counsel and emotional support, and Brendan Keogh / Dan Golding for convincing me that people even want to hear about stuff like this. Many of the ideas in this presentation will be expanded upon for the book I'm doing with Press Select.

First I want to set the record straight: I love Half-Life, but that doesn't mean it's immune to criticism. It is flawed in many ways. (Hard mode is too hard. The game is too long. On a Rail induces hemorrhaging. etc.)

I also think games mean things so far as you can argue for certain interpretations -- and I think Half-Life's popular legacy does not endure much scrutiny. Specifically, Half-Life's narrative is not subtle nor sophisticated nor conceptually innovative: from what we know about its development history and acknowledged inspirations, it is designed to be a schlocky silly action B-movie about a sci-fi disaster conspiracy, and I argue that reading is more convincing than thinking it's "the Myst of video games" or something.

That does not mean a schlocky game is bad; schlocky games are often fantastic. What I'm arguing, instead, is that many players prefer the weaker reading of Half-Life because they are seduced by the promise of technology without actually understanding what the technology is doing. Half-Life is magical and interesting and subtle, but not in the way that gamer culture mythologizes it. (At the same time, let's still be critical of what Half-Life does, and the values it represents to both players and developers.)

(Many of these slides will not make 100% sense without me, shouting an explanation or anecdote at you. I'm not sure when NYU Game Center is going to put up video recordings of the talks, etc. but I'll update this post when I know...)

I propose the "Well-Made" as a more technically-minded counterpart to the Well-Played series of books. The Well-Made might look carefully at certain representative parts of a game, or it might also survey general engine architectures as in Fabien Sanglard's fantastic idTech engine overviews. I'm reluctant to prescribe a format here because each game is highly contextual; I think Half-Life benefited from looking at specific setpieces instead of its code modules, but a more systemic game might emphasize its code processes more.

Mostly, I just want to get away from the idea that technical stuff is scientific and engineered, but not artistic and creative. Good game development isn't about well-crafted pieces, it is more about the relationships of those pieces and whether you could make the connection. I think Valve developers saw many of these connections and I wanted to share their implementation choices as case studies in game development. Such a case study or a Well-Made would be a powerful learning tool for other game developers, or maybe even just plain good reading for anyone interested in how some games come together.

Ingenious Dry-Erase Glass ‘Lightboard’ for Video Lectures Allows Presenter to Face Camera While Writing

To create more engaging video lectures, Northwestern University engineering professor Michael Peshkin created Lightboard, an ingenious transparent dry-erase board that allows him to face the camera while drawing notes and diagrams in front of him. The board consists of a double pane of glass that is lit from within by LEDs. Peshkin uses fluorescent dry-erase markers which are highly visible on the lit glass. If you’re wondering how his writing is not backwards, it’s because he films his lectures through a mirror. Peshkin has posted instructions on how to make your own Lightboard.

China dragged down a lot of giant companies last quarter

by Matt Phillips
China's economy appears to be on a smoke break.

With the third-quarter earnings season for American companies in the rearview window, the question is what did we learn? That is, aside from the fact that the overall numbers were, well, meh. The biggest standout was China, which appears to be coming up short in its role as the world’s growth driver.

According to analysts from market data firm FactSet, about 73% of the companies that reported earnings so far beat the consensus expectations for earnings per share. That may sound pretty good, but it’s actually about average. Like the children of the fictitious Lake Wobegon (a bedrock of the long-running American radio show, A Prairie Home Companion), nearly everyone is an out-performer during earnings season. In revenue terms, about 52% of companies that reported beat expectations, which is slightly below the average over the previous four years, according to FactSet.

More interestingly, here’s a smattering of quotes culled from earnings calls that collectively show that a big corporate America feels weighed down by China.

UPS

Asian economic projections are mixed, as expansion in Japan has been offset somewhat by slowing China growth.

-D. Scott Davis, CEO. (Oct. 25.)

Cisco Systems

Overall, [orders in] Asia-Pacific, Japan, and China were down 10%. China continued to decline as we and our peers work through the challenging political dynamics in that country.

-John Chambers, CEO. (Nov. 13)

Microsoft

From a geographic perspective, we saw broad-based revenue growth. Overall, both developed and emerging markets showed strength. The U.S. and parts of Western Europe were particularly strong, while China was weak.

-Amy Hood, CFO. (Oct. 24)

Coca-Cola

I think China has already had a slowdown and is beginning to recover. We see that, and there’s always also a lag between the GDP per capitas and disposable incomes. So, also important to realize that they don’t all happen at the same time.

-Muhtar Kent, CEO. (Oct. 15)

Corning Inc.

The majority of the year-over-year increase was due to carrier growth in North America and EMEA as well as enterprise growth in North America, which more than offset year-over-year declines in China fiber sales. The China fiber [optic cable] market was softer than expected in Q3, and we believe this will continue through Q4.

-James Flaws, CFO. (Oct. 30)

Avon Products

Looking at our Asia-Pacific business, I’m not satisfied with our performance. We continue to work through our challenges in China. But as I said in the previous call, it will take some quarters to stabilize that business.

-Sheri McCoy, CEO. (Oct. 31)

McDonald’s

There is and has been, as you all know, a slowing of the economy. The GDP is at its slowest growth level in 23 years and that’s causing a bit of a credit crunch across China, slight decline in consumer confidence that goes along with that as consumer sentiment is very cautious is the way I would describe it.

-Don Thompson, CEO. (Oct. 21)

YUM! Brands

Based on KFC China’s sales for September, which is part of China Division’s fourth quarter, and the less than expected sales lift from the launch of our new beef burger, it’s now unlikely that China Division’s same-store sales will be positive for Q4, although we do expect to show improvement.

-David Novak, CEO (Oct. 9)

Starwood Hotels & Resorts

Clearly, growth in China has been disappointing this year, and this trend continued into Q3. We saw a small sequential pickup, but not as much as we had expected. More recently, the economic news coming out of China suggests a stronger trend. This should clearly help. On the other hand, the government’s focus on curtailing spending on entertainment by public officials continues, hurting our business in regions where this is the largest source of demand.

-Vasant M. Prabhu, CFO. (Oct. 24)

Owens-Illinois

China is still a challenging market, and that’s why we have gone through some retrenchment over the last year-and-a-half and two years.

-Albert Stroucken, CEO. (Oct. 31)

 Nike

Revenue was higher for every geography, except China.

-Donald Blair, CFO. (Sept. 26)

The Serious Eats Guide to Thanksgiving Cider Pairing

by Chris Lehault

via Russian Sledges

From Drinks

Convention tells us to take it easy with the drink choices on Thanksgiving and concentrate on food and family. But you're a Thanksgiving pro by now (you've watched Kenji's video about how to spatchcock a turkey, right?) so we think you can put as much thought into what goes in the glass as you do about what's going on the plate.

And the secret is: getting it right is easy. You just need 3 bottles of cider. The key, like all things Thanksgiving related, is pacing.

Start Off Easy

20131010aaronburruse.jpgThere is nothing more festive than greeting your guests with a glass of bubbly. But instead of Champagne or Prosecco this year, break out a bottle of dry sparkling cider. These subtle ciders won't weigh down your palate but will complement briny olives and pickled vegetables while cutting through rich cheese plates and deviled eggs. The tannins in dry ciders can accentuate spicy foods, though, so put down the pepperoni and choose prosciutto or other delicate charcuterie.

Any dry cider can kick start the day but—in this situation—we prefer those high on minerality and low on complex yeast character. Thanksgiving is not the time to bring the funk.

Try these:

There are quite a few single-varietal Newtown Pippin ciders out there but this holiday we're most excited about the Pippin Cider from Washington's Dragon's Head Cider. Dry and bright, with lemony flavors and light tannins, Pippin Cider is an easy-going way to start the meal.

For a more rustic approach, reach for the the Homestead Cider from Aaron Burr Cider. Fermented to dryness from wild, New York state apples, cider maker Andy Brennen creates an earthy cider with an impressive amount of tannin from foraged fruit.

Uncle John's Fruit House Winery's Baldwin Cider is an easy choice from the Great Lakes region. Using heirloom fruit, this cider has a subtle balance of wet stone and crisp apples for definitively fall feeling.

Go Bright for the Main Course

20131113_273508_Baldwin.jpg

When serving traditional Thanksgiving fare, you'll want a cider with brightness and acidity. Holidays dishes tend to go big on the fats and bright ciders cut through the richness and prepare your mouth for the next bite. To complement the caramelization and sweetness of roasted side dishes, pick a cider that is off-dry or medium dry. The subtle sweetness with hold up to—but not weigh down—the meal.

Generally, ciders pressed from American heirloom fruit—sharp-sweet apples grown from seed or discovered in the New World —are ideal in this situation. They are also historically relevant. These fruits—many of which were discovered by chance during the colonial era—are American cider's foundation and bring a range of palate-cleansing flavors from a lemony brininess to apple and red currant.

Due to a lack of tannins, American cider fruit produces ciders that are easy-going and festive. If you are looking for something more structured and austere, pick a cider that adds bittersweet English and French apples in the mix.

Try these:

New England cider makers are leading the way in heirloom cider production and some of the best are come from New York's Finger Lakes region. Bellwether Cider's King Baldwin blends two old apple varieties—the Tompkins King and the Baldwin—for a tart, refreshing cider with an earthy finish. This one-two punch of acid and earthiness plays well with everything from rich gravies to roasted root vegetables.

Further east, Slyboro Ciderhouse's Hidden Star uses locally grown Northern Spy and Liberty apples for a cider that is more aromatic. Crisp, fresh apple flavors still dominate the Hidden Star but there also a floral character that does wonders around butter and comforting fall flavors.

Tilted Shed Ciderworks' Graviva! Semidry Cider is a more English-inspired take on an heirloom cider. Graviva! starts with California's quintessential apple, the Gravenstein. These are blended with Hubbardston Nonesuch heirlooms and English bittersweet fruit for a lively cider with apple and citrus flavors. The tannins provide a long, lingering finish.

Succumb to the Sweetness

20131113_273508_Newhall.jpg

As dinner winds down, it's best to tone down the tannins and pair sweet with sweet; dessert is not the time for a daring pairing. But when choosing a cider as decadent as dessert, think high acid and high sugar. This double intensity will both complement and cut through the richness of pies, crumbles, and cakes.

Try these:

Harvest Moon Four Screw Hard Cider smells like autumn's fresh apples and brings hints of spice. This cider is finished with a touch of maple syrup, which helps it work well with fall desserts. Cider makers can be a bit heavy-handed with their maple syrup additions but, here, the syrup is balanced by a brightness that helps it complement, but not overwhelm dessert.

If you are looking for something a bit stronger to end your meal, try a pommeau. Produced from a blend of aged apple spirits and fresh or lightly fermented cider, pommeau usually clocks in around 20% ABV, making it a good choice for post-dinner sipping. Seek out your local cidery's version, or look for the 2011 Pommeau from Traditions Ciderworks in Corvallis, Oregon. Produced with traditional bittersweet cider fruit and blended with Clear Creek Eau de Vie de Pomme, this pommeau layers flavors of apples, oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugars.

Ice cider is also a wonderful way to close out a meal. Each year, more and more producers in cold climates are turning out inspiring bottles. Newhall Farm's version is a Thanksgiving favorite for its high acidity, and wonderful spice and caramelized sugar flavors. Of course, there are no spices in this bottle, just 100% estate grown Vermont apples.

Serving cider this Thanksgiving? Which bottles will you open?

Great Job, Internet!: A Seinfeld Twitter parody account made the best Arcade Fire video of the year

Seinfeld2000 is one of a few satirical Twitter accounts reimagining Seinfeld as a sitcom still airing on NBC—and it’s somewhat of an elaborate parody of the SeinfeldToday account that spouts loglines for fictional current episodes. But though it tweets out gems about its Through The Looking Glass version of the Seinfeld characters, the account’s greatest achievement isn’t a pithy remark. Rather, it's a new music video cutting together the entire arc of George Costanza’s long and tragic engagement to Susan Ross and Arcade Fire’s “Here Comes The Night Time.” The video tracks the whole sad affair in incredibly bizarre fashion, subtitled with the account’s interpretation of the dialogue, depicting “Garge” and his failed attempts to end an engagement he doesn’t want. It’s a mystifying and yet hypnotizing pairing of Seinfeld and Arcade Fire that works surprisingly well. And considering all the weird things the band has ...

Valve has launched a new Reviews section on Steam, allowing users to share their thoughts about the games they're playing with friends and strangers worldwide. Steam Reviews is now in beta, open to all users.

Steam Reviews is an evolution of Steam Recommendations, Valve says. Users have written more than 7 million Recommendations over the years, and anyone wishing to upgrade Recommendations to Reviews may do so by adjusting their own list of Reviews. Users are able to write Reviews of any game they've launched via Steam, and other members can rate those Reviews as helpful or unhelpful.

Steam Reviews aren't aggregated for a single, overall score of a game or software - yet.

"Not yet, but we are looking to add that during the beta," Valve writes. "Many products on Steam change significantly over time as the game or software is updated and new content is added. In order to form a score that accurately reflects the current state of a product, we first need to gather and evaluate the data from reviews."

At the root of the problem seems to be unreasonable performance expectations combined with a fundamentally dehumanizing environment. "I seriously have never seen so many people forgoing the textbook Portland passive/aggressive and just call it like it is."

So here I am with my significant other enjoying a rather quiet Sunday night at Belmont Station. I just biked 12 miles to get there but that's not very relevant. We'll just assume I'm cold and tired. I see you there, all drunk as fuck with your two six and seven year-old children; ages assumed. The place just went from cozy and intimate to some sort of over-the-top Gresham Applebees, clusterfuck in no time flat. Your children are laying on the floor screaming as you tickle them while every conversation in the room comes to a screeching halt in response to the spectacle. The bartender comes around to your table to politely inform you that you are indeed in public and shit like that is all manner of inappropriate. You say something like "Well fuck, I guess we should just leave, then". Pretty much everyone in the room audibly agrees with you, in no uncertain terms. I seriously have never seen so many people forgoing the textbook Portland passive/aggressive and just call it like it is. You and your children were completely out of hand and the place was measurably better when you finally decided to leave.

New York puts state troopers in unmarked SUVs to catch texting drivers in the act

by Chris Welch

New York State is getting even more aggressive in its pursuit of drivers that text on the road. 32 unmarked SUVs are now traveling the state's highways in hopes of catching distracted drivers in the act. The tall vehicles give state troopers a better vantage point than traditional police cars, which put them at eye level with other drivers and can make it difficult to spot when someone is illegally using a phone. These CITE (Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement) SUVs are just the latest step in New York's efforts to cut down on texting while driving.

Aside from stiffer penalties for the guilty, New York earlier this year rebranded its string of thruway rest areas as "Texting Zones." By informing travelers where the next text stop is, the program aims to dissuade drivers from taking their eyes off the road. Now, as millions prepare to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, law enforcement has gained a discreet new tool for catching those who put others at risk.

"The Comixology app and the Image Comics app that runs through Comixology are far and away the most important of all the digital platforms we’re working with right now," Image publisher Eric Stephenson said. "the iBookstore is a distant second."

Image requested that Apple review three of its titles, Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss II, Joe Casey and Piotr Kowalski's Sex, and Rick Remender and Keiron Dwyer's XXXombies. "We requested the review because we felt those books should be available through our apps, which remains the case," Stephenson said. Initially, Apple approved all three.

However, in May, Apple notified Comixology that 56 comics that had previously been available on its app did not meet their standards and must be removed. That list included the three recently reviewed Image comics as well as issues 1-13 of Johnny Ryan's Angry Youth Comix and books 1-4 of his Prison Pit, Hans Rickheit's Folly: The Consequences of Indiscretion, and the LGBTQ anthology No Straight Lines (also nominated for an Eisner Award), all from Fantagraphics Books; five yaoi manga (romances between two males) from Digital Manga Publishing; Jess Fink's Chester 5000, published by Top Shelf; Chaykin's Black Kiss and Grant Morrison's The Boys: Herogasm, both from Dynamite Entertainment; Omaha the Cat Dancer and The Story of O, from NBM; and a quintet of titles, including Chicken Soup for Satan, from the horror/fantasy publisher Asylum Press.

Being excluded from the Comixology app is serious business for publishers. The digital distributor was the third highest grossing iPad app in 2012, and in September they reported that comics downloads had reached the 200 million mark.
