Mexican cobalt-60 thieves will soon die of radiation exposure, say officials

by Sam Byford

The radioactive material hijacked in a Mexico truck heist has been recovered and, although the two gunmen remain on the run, officials believe they won't have long to live. The abandoned cobalt-60 was found removed from its casing about 25 miles from where it was stolen, according to The Washington Post, meaning that the men responsible will likely have been exposed to a material described by the International Atomic Energy Agency as "extremely dangerous."

"They will, without a doubt, die."

"The people who handled it will have severe problems with radiation," says Mardonio Jimenez of Mexico’s nuclear safety commission. "They will, without a doubt, die." The discovery of the truck and cobalt-60 brings to an end a two-day hunt across six Mexican states, with authorities worried that the thieves might have been looking to create a dirty bomb.

But it's now thought that the two men didn't know what was inside the truck, which was en route to a local storage facility, and only unsealed the material out of curiosity. "I believe, definitely, that the thieves did not know what they had," says Jimenez. "They were interested in the crane, in the vehicle.”

Holiday Gift Guide: 'Yotsuba&!' Manga

by Chris Sims

Yotsuba&! volume 12, Kiyohiko Azuma

When it comes to the holiday gift-giving season, comic book readers are notoriously difficult to shop for. I mean, most of us are down at the shop buying our favorite stuff every single week, so when the time comes for people who like us to get us something we want, well, a lot of times we already have it. That’s why we’re stepping in with a public service, bringing you comics-related items sure to make the season brighter, whether you’re browsing for a gift or just looking for something to drop hints about so that you don’t get stuck with a random assortment of back issues again.

If you’re looking for pretty much anyone who enjoys comics as a medium, then you might want to just go ahead and get them the best possible comic: Kiyohiko Azuma’s Yotsuba&!

Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&! volume 7ITEM: Yotsuba&! Volumes 1 – 12

CLASSIFICATION: Manga

AVAILABILITY: Around $10 each on Amazon

The word you’re going to hear most often when people start discussing Yotsuba&! is “charming.” You might get “delightful” in there at some time too and, if you’re talking to me, “the best manga ever printed” thrown in for good measure, but there’s really no better way to describe it — it’s absolutely, irrefutably charming.

If you haven’t read it, you might still be familiar with creator Kiyohiko Azuma from his previous work, Azumanga Daioh, but really, if you were a fan of Azumanga, then odds are pretty good that you’ve already got a stack of Yotsuba paperbacks within ten feet of you right now. It’s a very simple story, following the everyday adventures of Yotsuba, a little girl who takes endless joy in her ordinary life alongside her deadpan dad and a cast of friendly, somewhat neurotic neighbors. It’s a cliché to say that Azuma manages to make the mundane extraordinary, but that’s exactly what happens here, and it’s beautiful, frequently hilarious, and, well, charming.

It’s tempting to say that Yotsuba makes a great gift for any comics reader, but if someone’s a die-hard superhero fan, they might not be too keen on the story of a five year-old girl learning what air conditioners are or picking out a teddy bear. If, however, your gifting target likes stuff from multiple genres, even a little bit, then I can almost guaranteeYotsuba will warm their heart. There are currently 12 volumes out (including the latest, in which Yotsuba paints a table without permission), but the first one’s in print for anyone who hasn’t read it.

And hey, if you’re going for someone who already is a fan, you can always go the extra mile and snag the pricey Yotsuba action figure.

SelfMadeHero To Publish Graphic Novel Co-Written By Pixies Singer Black Francis

by Matt D. Wilson

The Good Inn main

Black Francis (a.k.a. Frank Black) has been in the headlines lately with news that his band, Pixies, have fired new bassist Kim Shattuck, but it looks like the sort-of reunited band isn’t the only project he’s got going.

The singer and guitarist has co-written a new graphic novel titled The Good Inn. Josh Frank co-wrote the book with Black Francis (whose real name is Charles Thompson) and it will feature art by Steven Appleby, a cartoonist for the U.K. newspaper The Guardian.

Here’s how a SelfMadeHero press release describes the book:

The Good Inn is a fantastical piece of illustrated fiction based on a yet-to-be-written soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t yet exist, which Black Francis has approached with the same characteristic eccentricity and imagination he writes a song. The teenage hero known only as Soldier Boy escapes a devastating explosion at the French port of Toulon and sets out on a bizarre journey across France. Navigating past homicidal gypsies, combative soldiers and porn-peddling peasants, he takes refuge in a secluded inn, where he finds himself centre stage in the making of the world’s first narrative pornographic film.

The Good Inn will be released in the United Kingdom in May 2014. No word on a U.S. release date as of yet.

Shinji Higuchi To Direct Live Action 'Attack on Titan' Movie

by Caleb Goellner
Attack on Titan Movie Concept Artshingeki.net

The live action Attack on Titan movie based on Hajime Isayama’s manga and its anime adaptation seems to have assembled something of a dream for fans of civilization-destroying anime and tokusatsu. Filling a slot that’s been vacant since the departure of Tetsuya Nakashima last december is new director Shinji Higuchi, known for his work as a storyboard artist on Kill la Kill, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion and its “rebuild” films. Higuchi also served as the special effects director on Gamera and Godzilla movies and Studio Ghibli’s stunning live action prequel to Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo. Truly, this is a director who knows a thing or two about depicting giants wiping out humanity.

The news comes from the official AoT manga site, which announced the new director yesterday alongside a piece of concept art of the series’ signature walls, which humanity lives behind to keep the giant man-eating beings known as Titans at bay.

Higuchi joins screenwriters Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, the live-action Gantz movies, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman), Tomohiro Machiyama and AoT creator Isayama for the TOHO produced and distributed film.

No stars have been cast, but fans can probably expect info following the rollout of Subaru’s Forester SUV commercial that Higuchi is directing, which will debut the live action movie look of Isayama’s Titans when it airs at the end of January in Japan.

The Attack on Titan film is scheduled for a 2015 release, and filming is expected to begin this summer.

Obama says he can't have an iPhone

by Sean Hollister

Barack Obama was a BlackBerry addict even before he became President of the United States, but these days he may not have a choice. "I'm not allowed for security reasons to have an iPhone," he quipped, in a speech promoting Obamacare to an audience attending a youth summit at The White House.

Obama's BlackBerry is "no fun"

That's not much of a surprise, considering how stringent the President's security requirements are. Originally, Obama wouldn't even have had a BlackBerry, if the NSA had its way. It was only after he declared that the government would have to "pry it out of my hands" that he was able to obtain a version of the communicator with beefed-up security -- albeit one that could only communicate with a grand total of ten individuals. "It's no fun," he told ABC's The View three years ago.

But while you could possibly take Obama's comment as the latest admission that the government needs to better understand consumer technology — else risk another failure like HealthCare.gov — that wasn't the President's point at all. He was merely humbly admitting that he wasn't quite as tech-savvy as his youthful audience and doesn't know how much their smartphones cost on a monthly basis.

"Now my suspicion is that for a lot of you, between your cable bill and your phone bill, you're spending more than $100 a month," Obama continued. "The idea that you wouldn't want to make sure you've got the health security and financial security that comes with health insurance for less than that price, you guys are smarter than that. Most young people are as well."

It's not the first time the iPhone has popped up in Obama's recent rhetoric. In October, he argued that Obamacare itself shouldn't be judged harshly for initial glitches, comparing it to the way Apple fixes bugs in iOS. "I don't remember anybody suggesting Apple should stop selling iPhones or iPads or threatening to shut down the company if they didn't [fix a glitch]. That's not how we do things in America."

The Shut Up & Sit Down Community Guidelines

by susd@pretend-money.com (SU&SD)

Paul: Hi everyone.

We wanted to take a moment, between videos where we fall over and lewd reviews of bean-trading games, to set out some community guidelines.

We want this to be a safe, friendly, welcoming space for everyone. That means we’re queer-friendly. We won’t tolerate sexism, racism, bigotry, or any form of hate speech.

We’re so proud of our community. You’ve been fantastic, supportive, intelligent and contributed so much. Don’t see this as us saying we’re unhappy with you guys, only that Shut Up & Sit Down is growing faster than ever. It’s important to us that we set the tone and that everyone who comes here feels comfortable. You can help with that and, indeed, you already have. So much.

Quinns: Paul and I work in games media, but we've never seen a community as kind and respectful as you guys. Respect! On the internet! It's a rare thing, and something we'll be working to protect in our comments from here on.

If anything should bother you, please do email the contact address at the bottom of the site. That'll reach us. Oh, and you'll only need to stay shivering out in the comments for a bit longer. Your forum will be ready in the new year.

Thanks, everyone!

“When I used to be on ESPN, very often. That I looked tired was a common refrain, or that I have a fat face, what I was wearing, etc. … Sometimes it was about how hot I am and will I accept their marriage proposal? And then, of course, the more vile comments, which are always plus-plus. I’ve been called a c—- more times than I can count, had myriad death threats, and been told that the only reason I have my job is because I’m either a.) sleeping with all the athletes, or b.) sleeping with my (presumed) male bosses. I once had someone threaten to mace me outside my apartment building in New York City. ESPN security (which is rarely heralded but so invaluable to its employees and especially its talent) worked with me at the time, and hearing some of the stuff they had to protect against was awful. I’m just a white woman who hears it, but that’s nothing compared to the black women in our business. From what I’ve been told and have seen anecdotally, the misogyny plus the racism they endure is awful. Easy from my privileged perch to say this, but I’ve got it easy.”

Hayao Miyazaki's Proposed Pippi Longstocking Film Probably Would Have Been Amazing [Art]

by Joseph Hughes

Pippi Longstocking Hayao Miyazaki

Here’s another project to throw in the “I wish this would have been made” file we all keep in our heads. Back in 1971, legendary animators Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata began production on an animated adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking books. After meeting with the animators, Lindgren ultimately decided not to give them permission to produce the film. But now we can all look at some of the watercolor concept art that Miyazaki created, featuring the strongest girl in the world, and wonder what could have been.

The art was made available to the public courtesy of the the Miyazaki and Studio GHIBLI Live Journal page and, as you can see below, it was a project with the potential to be wonderful. The marriage of Miyazaki’s style and and Lindgren’s iconic character makes for some lovely art. It’s possible Lindgren’s decision not to give permission to Miyazaki and Takahata for an adaptation stemmed from concerns about them straying a bit too far from the source material — Kiki’s Delivery Service, for instance, in some ways differs quite a bit from the novel it’s based on. We may never know what the reasoning was. All we can really do is sit back and think about how amazing this likely would have been. Alas.

It’s no wonder that all you Seattle folks are jerks with attitude erections, Seattle you’re fucking weird.

Who exits the freeway on the left hand side? Seattle. Who can’t gamble at a video poker machine, but can win a $250.00 jackpot from a pull tab ticket? Seattle. Who’s pool tables are Ron Jeremy’s abnormal penis in size? Unnatural! Seattle.
Who fucking hosts a home game for the Seahawks, gets everyone drunk, allows them to LEGALLY smoke weed to oppose and mitigate the effects of their drunkenness giving them the drunken munchies, but doesn’t serve food in ANY restaurant location in a 3 mile radius to redeem their drunken apocalypse past 10pm? SEATTLE!

So fucking weird!

Battle over Google Glass etiquette erupts in another Seattle diner

by Casey Newton

Google Glass has been available to early adopters for nearly nine months, and some merchants are doing their best to keep it out of their establishments. Nick Starr, a network engineer in Seattle, learned that the hard way this month on a visit to the Lost Lake Cafe, a 24-hour diner in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. According to Starr, he had eaten at the cafe several times while wearing Glass, but on his last visit was asked to remove the $1,500 headset or leave. Starr demanded to see a written policy banning Glass, but when the server held her ground he left. "I would love an explanation, apology, clarification," Starr wrote on Facebook, "and if the staff member was in the wrong and lost the owner money last night and also future income as well, that this income be deducted from her pay or her termination."

"We want our customers to feel comfortable."

It turns out that Starr had walked into an establishment owned by one of the more vocal anti-Glass restaurateurs. Lost Lake owner David Meinert made headlines in March when he preemptively banned Glass from another establishment he owns, Seattle's 5 Point Cafe. In a follow-up interview with Forbes, Meinert said he recently had a staff meeting at Lost Lake telling all servers to ask anyone wearing Glass to remove it. "It's about privacy," Jason Lajeunesse, Meinert's business partner, told Forbes. "It's one thing to take out a camera and capture a moment, people see you doing it, they have a chance to step out if the want to. With Glass people don't have a chance to do that. We want our customers to feel comfortable, not like they're being watched."

In his Facebook post, Starr notes that Lost Lake's menu encourages customers to take pictures at the cafe and post them on Instagram. Is wearing Glass really all that different? The debate is far from over — and with Glass expected to enter mass production next year, it may actually be just beginning.

Encrypted Social Network Vies For Disgruntled Facebook Users

angry tapir writes "With the look of Google Plus and Facebook-like elements, a new social network named "Syme" feels as cozy as a well-worn shoe. But beneath the familiar veneer, it's quite different. Syme encrypts all content, such as status updates, photos and files, so that only people invited to a group can view it. Syme, which hosts the content on its Canada-based servers, says it can't read it. "The overarching goal of Syme is to make encryption accessible and easy to use for people who aren't geeks or aren't hackers or who aren't cryptography experts," co-founder Jonathan Hershon said in an interview about the service." Applebee's installing 100,000 tablets to take orders and kill boredom

by Josh Lowensohn
firehose

"Tools will let you share what you're eating with Facebook buddies"

Do you love going out for jalapeño poppers but hate the human interaction it always requires? Applebee's apparently knows the feeling: the middling restaurant chain is adding tablets to its tables and bar areas to let you order your food and pay the check without having to track down your server. There will even be games for times when you're eating alone, or with someone who makes you wish you were eating alone.

Tools will let you share what you're eating with Facebook buddies

The plan involves the purchase of 100,000 tablets from food service tablet maker Presto, which include a standard credit card reader as well as NFC to link up to mobile wallet apps. These are going out to 1,800 Applebee's locations in the US by the end of 2014. The company also says it plans to add other features like streaming music, video, and even tools that will let you share what you're eating with Facebook buddies.

Applebee's is the latest big food chain to implement tablets for ordering, and picking up the bill. Chili's announced plans to install touchscreen ordering and entertainment devices in the majority of its 1,266 US locations back in September using technology from Presto rival Ziosk. Parent company DineEquity might bring the technology to IHOP locations too.

The move to tablets in some chains has caused friction given the threat it poses to replacing human servers, though Applebee's told Businessweek it plans to keep the same number of people working at those locations — at least for now.

AbleGamers guide warns against next-gen consoles

by Colin Campbell

The AbleGamers Foundation has released its 2013 Gift Guide for disabled players, which recommends the best controllers and games to play. This year, the guide has warned that new consoles are not yet friendly to disabled gamers.

"To kick off the recommended holiday shopping guide for disabled gamers, we wanted to start off by stating a very disappointing, but expected result," offered the guide. "The next generation consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, are not ready for the disability community."

The list recommends various products such as customizable Evil Controllers and the Stinky Board which allows players to control games using their feet. Games that score highly for disabled players this year include FIFA 14, Proteus and Final Fantasy 14.

"This was an interesting year for accessibility," said Steve Spohn, COO of AbleGamers. "Many of the top games from big publishers were not accessible by our standards, yet there were many indie games that stepped up to the plate and there were many assistive devices brought to life."

I got this original plan from this pinterest post, but disliked...

I got this original plan from this pinterest post, but disliked the sexy lady on the side judging me with her abs. So instead I replaced it with a calender so you can mark off each day!

My doctors hope that building more muscle tone will help me manage my heart condition, so I’m determined to do this. But considering I haven’t exercised in like, years, I feel like death after the first day.

You never realize how many 90 jumping jacks are til you hit like 45 and start to feel your stomach in your throat…

Anyways, it’s easily printable and I wish all those that wish to try to get healthier like me all the luck in the world.

Finnish games renaissance is the result of a lack of interest in money, says Supercell

by Emily Gera

The boom of Finland's games industry is the result of a cultural disinterest in making money, Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen told TechCrunch, expaining the growing success of companies like Rovio, Grand Cru and Supercell itself in the country.

While an initial push in games development came from the Finnish government and numerous venture capitalists, the growing local scene has maintained its trajectory because of a focus on quality projects in the face of losing money. According to Paananen, prior to the greenlighting of Clash of Clans and Hay Day, Supercell killed off more projects than it launched in 2012.

For this reason, despite the possibility that the success of games like Angry Birds could result in an influx of developers into the community who hope to make quick money - a shift similar to what was seen in the Silicon Valley community and the rise of Zynga - Paananen states this works against the cultural philosophy of Finland.

"What I like about the local scene is that most people do not work in games because they want to make money. Instead, they want to make great games," said Paananen. "Ironically, I think that is the right approach to take, and will also maximize the financial returns in the longer run."

"I am pretty sure that the small number of people who may join the industry just to make the quick buck will very soon realize how immensely tough industry this is, and they will leave as quickly as they appeared," he added. "The vast majority of the local game developers do not think ‘money first, I do not see this changing. Finns generally do not work for money anyway, so why should that change now that there is a bit more money available?"

The Daily Dot - A debate about gendered pronouns on GitHub ignites the tech community

firehose

TW: tech is horrible

'On Saturday, GitHub user and longtime contributor Alex Gaynor rewrote Libuv’s documentation to use genderless pronouns. Then he filed it as a “pull request”—the review phase when other users discuss and accept or reject changes.

Although some users felt it unnecessary, most of the commenters who joined the thread were positive about the change, which removed “he” and “him/his” in favor of “they” and “them/their.” But lead coder Ben Noordhuis curtly rejected the change:

"Sorry, not interested in trivial changes like that."
...
The merge would have been a win for proponents of embracing language changes on GitHub, which has been criticized for its track record of racism, sexism, and homophobia found within its free-for-all coding and testing spaces.

But Noordhuis also added that the whole thing had soured him on Libuv development:

"I'm probably going to step back from libuv and node.js core development. I do it more out a sense of duty than anything else. If this is what I have to deal with, then I'd just as rather do something else."

Many GitHub users criticized the hostility with which he’d been met on the thread. Roth blogged on StrongLoop’s website Saturday that he wished users had spoken to Noordhuis privately first instead of lining up to criticize him. He then joked, “If Ben can’t learn, we’ll fire him.”

But not everyone was so kind. Joyent is the company sponsoring GitHub’s current Node project. Its vice president of engineering, Bryan Cantrill, is a noted software engineer who minced no words about his feelings on Noordhuis’s behavior on Saturday:

"[B]ecause this is a Joyent-sponsored project, many made the reasonable inference that Ben is a Joyent employee—and have called Joyent to task for tolerating such poor behavior. (Especially when that poor behavior transcended into the gobsmackingly inappropriate as Ben tried to revert Isaac's commit.)

But while Isaac is a Joyent employee, Ben is not—and if he had been, he wouldn't be as of this morning: to reject a pull request that eliminates a gendered pronoun on the principle that pronouns should in fact be gendered would constitute a fireable offense for me and for Joyent."

Michael Smith, software architect for eBay company True Action, was a bit harsher on G+ in response:

"The use of inclusive wording is so important to the open source community that they will happily hop on github to vilify a person who has been working tirelessly to benefit a major open source project. Things went downhill even further when Joyent's Bryan Cantrill blogged that if Ben had been a Joyent employee, he would've been fired. I'm terrified by this kind of polarization in the communities I love, and it makes me hesitate every time I start to get involved in a project." '

Apple signs iPhone deal with China Mobile, the world's largest carrier: WSJ

by Sam Byford

After years of rumors, Apple may have finally signed a deal with China Mobile that will see the iPhone sold on the world's largest carrier. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news, saying that the phones should be available later this month; this could be timed around a December 18th event where China Mobile will announce a brand for its new 4G service. The deal would give Apple potential access to over 700 million customers in the second-largest economy in the world.

China Mobile has been seen as an important target for Apple for years. Its chairman at the time, Wang Jianzhou, claimed that the iPhone would come to the carrier over two years ago; speculation mounted further when Apple's new iPhone 5S and 5C shipped with support for China Mobile's unusual TD-LTE network and gained Chinese regulatory approval.

The iPhone is already available on China Mobile's smaller competitors, China Telecom and China Unicom. The deal echoes the situation in Japan earlier this year, where leading carrier NTT Docomo finally started selling the iPhone after losing subscribers to smaller rivals SoftBank and KDDI. Apple now appears to have secured wide availability for two of the most important markets in Asia.

Newswire: The U.S. version of Morrissey's Autobiography reportedly excises his same-sex relationship

firehose

rofl

Though his relationship with photographer Jake Walters wasn't described in explicit detail in Morrissey's Autobiography, it was apparently enough to cause consternation somewhere: SPIN (via Contact Music) is reporting that the U.S. version of the book (out this week, along with an audiobook read by The Walking Dead's David Morrissey) removes details about the relationship, as well as a photo of Walters as a boy. We have yet to do a side-by-side comparison ourselves, but assuming it's true, perhaps our import copy just increased in value by $2. Whatever led to the change—dare we say cover-up?—there's no hiding the photograph that Walters took for the inner sleeve of Morrissey's 2008 Greatest Hits collection, which doesn't seem like the kind of photo you take of somebody who isn't... more than a friend. Compulsory Monogamy in The Hunger Games

by Mimi Schippers PhD
popular shared this story from Sociological Images.

NPR’s Linda Holmes wrote a great article about the gender dynamics in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and concluded, “…you could argue that Katniss’ conflict between Peeta and Gale is effectively a choice between a traditional Movie Girlfriend and a traditional Movie Boyfriend.”  I do love the way Holmes puts this.  Gender, it seems, is not what one is, but what one does.  Different characteristics we associate with masculinity and femininity are available to everyone, and when Peeta embodies some characteristics we usually see only in women’s roles, Peeta becomes the Movie Girlfriend despite being a boy.

Though I find this compelling, I want to take a moment to focus on the other part of this sentence… the part when Holmes frames Katniss’ relationship to Peeta and Gale as a “conflict between” and a “choice.”  I think that, in some ways, the requirement to choose one or the other forces Katniss’ to, not only “choose” a boyfriend, but also to choose gender—for herself.

hgcf

Depending on whether she’s relating to Peeta or Gale, she is either someone who takes charge, is competent in survival, and protects her partner (traditionally the masculine role) or someone who lets another lead and nurtures instead of protects (the feminine role).  As Candace West and Don Zimmerman suggested many years ago in their article “Doing Gender,” we do gender in relationship to other people.  It’s a conversation or volley in which we’re expected to play the part to the way others are doing gender.

When Katniss is with Peeta, she does a form of masculinity in relationship and reaction to his behavior and vice versa.  Because Peeta “calls out” protection, Katniss steps up.  When Gale calls out nurturing, she plays the part.  In other words, not only is gender a “doing” rather than a “being,” it is also an interactive process.  Because Katniss is in relationship to both Peeta and Gale, and because each embodies and calls out different ways of doing gender, Katniss oscillates between being the “movie boyfriend” sometimes and the “movie girlfriend” other times and, it seems, she’s facile and takes pleasure in doing all of it.  If Katniss has to “choose” Peeta or Gale, she will have to give up doing gender in this splendid, and, dare I say, feminist and queer way in order to “fit” into her and her “girlfriend’s” or “boyfriend’s” relationship.

Now imagine a world in which Katniss wouldn’t have to choose.

What if she could be in a relationship with Peeta and get her needs for being understood, nurtured, and protective while also getting her girl on with Gale?  In other words, imagine a world without compulsory monogamy where having two or more boyfriends or girlfriends was possible.

I’m currently working on a book on monogamy and the queer potential for open and polyamorous relationships. I’m writing about the ways in which compulsory monogamy fits nicely into and perpetuates cultural ideas about masculinity and femininity and how different forms of non-monogamy might open up alternative ways of doing, not just relationships, but also gender.

Forcing Katniss to choose is forcing Katniss into monogamy, and as I suggested above, into doing gender to complement her partner.  Victoria Robinson points out in her article, “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” that monogamy compels women to invest too much time, energy, and resources into an individual man and limits their autonomy and relationships with others.  What Robinson doesn’t talk about is how it also limits women’s range of how they might do gender in relationship to others.

It also limits men’s range of doing gender in relationships.  Wouldn’t it be nice if Peeta and Gale never felt the pressure to be something they are not?  Imagine how Peeta’s and Gale’s masculinities would have to be reconfigured to accommodate and accept each other?

Elisabeth Sheff, in her groundbreaking research on polyamorous people, found that both women and men in polyamorous relationships say that the men have to rethink their masculinities to be less possessive, women have room to be more assertive about their needs and desires, and men are more accommodating.

What this suggests is that monogamy doesn’t just limit WHO you can do; it also limits WHAT you can do in terms of gender.  Might I suggest that Katniss is such a well-rounded woman character precisely because she is polyamorous?  She’s not just the phallic girl with the gun… or bow in this case… or the damsel in distress.  She’s strong, vulnerable, capable, nurturing, and loyal, and we get to see all of it because she does gender differently with her boyfriends.  And therein, I believe, is one way that polyamory has a queer and feminist potential.  It can open up the field of doing gender within the context of relationships.

I don’t know how her story ends, but I for one, am hoping that, if there is a happily-ever-after for Katniss, it’s not because girl gets boy; its because girl gets both boys.

Riot tells pro League of Legends players they can’t stream competing games

League of Legends developer Riot has unleashed something of a bombshell on the pro-gaming community of streamers. The company operates a competitive e-sports league, the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), that's about to start its fourth season. Teams participating in the competition have to agree to a contract, and according to portions of the contract leaked to onGamers, those contracts will ban LCS participants from streaming a range of games that compete with League of Legends.

Strikingly, the contract prohibits not merely streaming these games during or adjacent to LCS events: they're banned entirely. If any competitor in LCS streams one of these games, they (or their team) are in breach of contract.

These prohibited games include direct competitors in the multiplayer online battle arena space such as Dota 2 and Heroes of Newerth, other competitive titles such as the StarCraft franchise, and, peculiarly, the PlayStation 3 title Fat Princess. Additionally, the rules prohibit the streaming of gambling sites, as well as promoting pornography, firearms, and non-over-the-counter drugs.

The character needs to be fully visible.
It should be saved as a .png file.
Then just scroll down and upload your file! That’s as easy as it gets!'
