Microsoft releases Solitaire, Mahjong, and a new Minesweeper for Windows Phone
Some people don't need a list of the best apps for their new phone. They simply need a classic game to keep them occupied. Realizing that, Microsoft has just added three of the most popular Windows PC timewasters ever made to Windows Phone: Solitaire, Mahjong, and a new version of Minesweeper.
Not the only game in town
Microsoft doesn't have any special claim to these games, and you can find plenty of other companies selling versions of them on Windows Phone and any other platform you can name. Still, Microsoft's versions have been a key part of Windows for many years now, and if these copies are any good they're likely to be very well received. Plus, each has Xbox Live integration, so you can compete with friends on Microsoft's leaderboards. The new Microsoft Solitaire Collection also has a "Play, Pause, Resume" feature that lets you take a game with you when you transition between using a Windows 8 PC and a Windows Phone.
You can find links to all three apps at our source link below.

Google Maps Glitches | Emilio Vavarella | Via
As sophisticated as it is, Google Maps is fundamentally the same type of thing cartographers have been making for centuries. It’s a flat, scaled representation of our planet. That means decisions have been made about what to show and what to leave out. At any given level of zoom, you can see only a certain subset of streets, of cities, of tributaries or topography. Even today, some streets are missing or mislaid. It feels omniscient, but its omniscience is made by humans, for humans.
Google Street View is something entirely different: a photographic document of world. It’s more objective and indelible than even the most accurate satellite-aided map. And that’s a bit unsettling. When every acre on Earth is catalogued for us to see, where will all the mysteries hide?
Thankfully, Google’s nine-eyed robot cameras and their attendant code aren’t quite omniscient either. And as Emilio Vavarella shows us in his screenshots, the places where that system breaks down have a mystery all their own.

Play classic video games in style with OpenEmu for Mac
firehosefinally, a decent frontend
The world has no shortage of video game emulators, but many can be painful to use — most reflect their hacker origins with equally hacky interfaces, and you'd need a vast collection of different emulators to properly relive your childhood. By contrast, OpenEmu is a breath of fresh air. Released this week only for Mac, the new emulator lets you drag and drop games from any of twelve different classic video game systems right into its interface, navigate using their cover art, and even hook up a wide variety of game controllers to play them with a minimum of fuss and bother.
Twelve systems, and more to come
Presently, the attractive interface supports games for a healthy number of classic consoles, including the NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega 32X, Sega Master System, and TurboGrafx-16. Portables are represesnted too: the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Game Gear, NeoGeo Pocket and even the Virtual Boy are playable. The DS still needs some work — you can't rotate the screens for vertically oriented games like Rhythm Heaven and Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword — but you can use your mouse or trackpad to emulate rudimentary stylus input.

You won't find any more recent consoles or arcade machines yet, but OpenEmu's developers say it's only a matter of time: the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Atari 2600, and even the PSP should be added in future updates.
For now, the best part is just how easy it is to hook up your existing game controllers to a MacBook and get that console feel on the road. Hook up a Wii Remote or DualShock 3 over Bluetooth, or plug in a PS4 controller with a Micro USB charging cable, and you're good to go. There's no need for dedicated PC game controllers, and you can even download a third-party driver to get your Xbox 360 gamepads working.

It's probably worth noting that the OpenEmu team didn't write the code that actually lets you play these games: the program uses the "cores" of existing emulators to get the job done. But the result is an elegant, functional interface that's perhaps the most convenient way to get into classic console gaming yet, and one whose open-source nature means that things should only get better in future versions.

The Rise And Fall Of Grunge Typography
firehoseDavid Carson "once disliked a Ray Gun article on Bryan Ferry, and so set the entire spread in Zapf Dingbats."
"The rise of grunge typography coincided with the burgeoning popularity of the Macintosh, which, introduced in 1984, permanently altered the landscape of graphic design and typography. The art of designing by hand—a painful craft of precision and consistency—was no longer the only option. Designers were liberated; the screen and their imagination were the only constraints. In many ways, the modifier "grunge" denotes for typography what it does for music: unfettered, unrestrained, a cry against convention. The experimental typographer is almost always the young typographer, and young typographers in the 90s, armed with new software and ideas, rejected the rule-based fonts of their forebears."

Best Of 2013: MUSIC
firehose"8. Music where the producers are trying their hardest"
THEY SAY MUSIC IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, AND IN 2013 THE SOUNDTRACK WAS BETTER THAN EVER. From the latest pop hits to classic songs from days gone by, if 2013 was all about one thing, it was all about the music. And if we wanted to hum along, nobody would stop us — because everyone had music fever this year.
There were some days in 2013 when you couldn’t walk down the street without hearing new music. And if you decided to go shoe shopping? “Fugeddaboutit,” because shoe stores were playing music CONSTANTLY in 2013! Call it the magic of music, or the Spirit of 2013, or Shoe-Shopping Delight, but for whatever reason, we heard allll the good music when we were shoe shopping this year. I probably bought 45 pairs of shoes this year, just because it’s a great way to hear free music. And that’s why music was KING in 2013. Because people love good music.
Here’s my list of the BEST MUSIC OF 2013:
10. Decent music, nothing special
9. Slammin’ club hits your niece likes
8. Music where the producers are trying their hardest
7. Opera songs where everyone’s screaming and stabbing each other
6. Rap music: “I’d like to say / rap music is here to stay (in 2013) / hip hop hooray / my name is Ray” etc. etc.
5. (TIE) Cool tunes / Guitar solos where you think, “That guy must have twenty fingers!”
4. Theme music
3. (TIE) All-American music / Music that makes ya go “hmm-mm?”
2. Songs you can’t get out of your head
1. Music that goes to #1 on the charts and changes the game
