First-Time Yelper Gives 1-Star Review Because of “Ugly Generic” Pizza Box

by Patrick Maguire

Ok, I’ll take the bait. The pizza at Lincoln Tavern in South Boston is very good. I know because I enjoyed a few free slices that the good folks at Lincoln donated to volunteers when they hosted a tremendous charity event a few months ago.

I’m not sure what vacant, rookie Yelper, “Nikki R.” thinks about the pizza at Lincoln because the twit didn’t mention it in their 1-star review, but they did mention the pizza box:

“was SO disappointed last night when i got a pizza to take home and it was in an ugly generic box.. what?!?! what happened to the lincoln pizza boxes? everyone loves walking home with a lincoln pizza box and everyone knows where you got it from. hm”

The post reminded me of comments made on Eater Boston by a guest who attended a free, pre-opening, ‘friends and family’ night hosted by one of the Boston area’s best restaurants:

“Tried ribelle tonight and was not impressed. Loud, weird paper over windows. Not a larger enough menu selection for vegetarian or kosher diners. I won’t be going back.”

The “weird paper” the anonymous ‘friend’ or ‘family’ member was referring to, was brown paper taped over the windows because the restaurant was closed to the public!!

I sent Yelper Nikki the following direct message:

“Do you really think it’s fair to give a restaurant 1 star because they ran out of pizza boxes? Yelp drives people to or away from restaurants, and obviously 1-star ratings can have a detrimental impact on restaurants. If you owned or worked at Lincoln Tavern, would you be amused by the 1-star review?” (I’ll update if they respond.)

Maybe it’s a ruse, or maybe Nikki is just looking for a little attention, but restaurant workers have a right to be frustrated and angry when anonymous dimwits fuck with their livelihood. It’s not funny.

Eater National recently ran a piece about Anthony Bourdain’s interview by Amazon’s David Blum for a Kindle Singles Interview. The piece included a comment from Bourdain about Yelp:

“Some chefs borrow money, they do everything they can, they kill themselves, it’s the culmination of a career working 100 hours a week or more. They finally open a place and within eight minutes of opening, some asshole has posted on Yelp, ‘Worst meal ever.’ You can understand why they go insane…”

Yes, we can…

Building a living photo frame with a Raspberry Pi and a motion detector

by Samuel Clay
popular shared this story from Samuel Clay's OfBrooklyn.com.

Every hardware hacker has a start, and this one is mine. My girlfriend bought me a Raspberry Pi for my birthday, and so I became determined to build something with it for her birthday two months later.

As you can see above, I built a photo frame that has a few interesting parts. For one, the software which runs the photo frame, which I explore below, keeps the photos fresh from Instagram and Flickr. It then displays a random photo for a configurable six seconds. Secondly, there is a motion detector, built using a PIR sensor, which only turns the monitor on when somebody walks by.

This photo frame is easy to build, but it does take a bit of know-how. Mainly, you should feel comfortable soldering wires and mounting the screen and Raspberry Pi to a board or other object. The hard part for me was figuring out how to turn the monitor on and off through the command line.

Everything else is gravy, from configuring wifi and autoboot/auto-login on the device to attaching and setting up the motion detecting PIR sensor. You can also use the eLinux guide to Raspberry Pi and its handy RPi Hardware Basic Setup wiki.

Parts

Raspberry Pi

I chose to use a Raspberry Pi for its simple wifi integration so that photos could be automatically updated. I didn't want to have to load photos on to an SD card which could then be read by an Arduino.

Connecting the monitor was also trivial on a Raspberry Pi, where an Arduino, Maple, or Beagle Bone would require sourcing a connection between the monitor's composite input and an output from the device.

Raspberry Pi, $29 on Adafruit.

Make note of the fact that you actually don't see any of my connections on the top of the board (pictured below). In the below photo, where the Raspberry Pi is flipped vertically to show off the electrical connections, the monitor's composite cable and the motion detecting PIR sensor's red wires are soldered underneath.

This way the photo frame looks cleaner. If I had connected the monitor using the yellow composite cable, it would have to be with a male-to-male composite adapter, since both the Raspberry Pi and the monitor have a male RCA connection. This would jut out about 2 inches below the device, resulting in a messy look for the frame.

3.5" LCD Monitor

3.5" LCD Monitor, $45 on Adafruit

Note that if you do not plan to solder the composite cable's two wires, you will need the ugly male-to-male adapter, sold for $1.50 on Adafruit.

There are a number of different sized LCD monitors:

1.5" LCD, $40
2" LCD, $40
2.5" LCD, $45
4.3" LCD, $50
7" LCD, $75
10" LCD, $150

4GB SD Card with Raspbian (Raspberry Pi + Debian)

4GB SD Card, $10 on Adafruit

This tiny SD card comes pre-loaded with Raspbian. If you prefer to use your own SD card and want to bootload it, just follow eLinux's Easy SD Card Setup wiki.

Miniature Wifi on USB

USB Wifi, $11 on Adafruit

Unless you're planning to use an ugly ethernet cable, this tiny wifi USB device works perfectly. It's easy to setup as well. I followed Adafruit's tutorial for setting up wifi on a Raspberry Pi.

Passive Infrared Motion Sensor

PIR sensor, $10 on Adafruit

This is a simple and inexpensive component that is responsible for turning the monitor on and off. The accuracy is great, as it never misses a beat, yet I haven't found it to accidentally trigger in the night unless we walk by. It also has two adjustable dials on the back that allow you to control its sensitivity and delay before firing. Ladyada covers how it works.

Soldering Iron

Aoyue 937+, $60 on Amazon

In order to connect the PIR motion detector and the composite cables, without resorting to the ugly male-to-male adapter, you will need to use a soldering iron. I chose the Aoyue 937+ Digital Soldering Station. Works great and I'm quite happy with it. I should have bought more tips, though.

Frame

This is where you get creative. You effectively just need an enclosure, but I found that picture frames offer the greatest aesthetics-to-enclosure ratio. You just need something that can hold a Raspberry Pi and monitor taped to it. I used double-sided mounting tape as an adhesive, although the wires are being held up by the frame itself.

Software

Raspberry Pi setup

You'll want to make sure you're setup with the following:

  • Auto-login, so your Raspberry Pi doesn't sit at a login prompt.
  • Auto-wifi, so you can download images automatically whenever your Raspberry Pi is turned on.
  • Disabled sleep, so your photo frame doesn't shut off when you don't want it to.

Downloading personal photos from Flickr

You'll need to register your Flickr API app, which is a quick process. That way you can get a Flickr API key that you can then use to walk the photos from your account. You will also need your Flickr user id.

There are two Python library dependencies for this code:

pip install flickrapi pip install requests

Once those are installed, save this script as download_flickr.py

#!/usr/bin/env python import flickrapi import requests FLICKR_KEY = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" USER_ID = "25704617@N04" def make_url(photo): # url_template = "http://farm{farm-id}.staticflickr.com/ # {server-id}/{id}_{secret}_[mstzb].jpg" photo['filename'] = "%(id)s_%(secret)s_z.jpg" % photo url = ("http://farm%(farm)s.staticflickr.com/%(server)s/%(filename)s" % photo) return url, photo['filename'] def main(): print " ---> Requesting photos..." flickr = flickrapi.FlickrAPI(FLICKR_KEY) photos = flickr.walk(user_id=USER_ID) for photo in photos: url, filename = make_url(photo.__dict__['attrib']) path = '/home/pi/photoframe/flickr/%s' % filename try: image_file = open(path) print " ---> Already have %s" % url except IOError: print " ---> Downloading %s" % url r = requests.get(url) image_file = open(path, 'w') image_file.write(r.content) image_file.close() if __name__ == '__main__': main()

Downloading extra photos from Flickr by tag name

Part of the fun of this photo frame is that not only do all of my photos get shown randomly, but I introduced a hodgepodge of random photos by downloading photos from a specific Flickr tag. In this case, I added koala photos, which makes for a pleasant randomness.

Save the following command as download_koalas.sh or whatever you like as a tag.

FLICKR_TAG=koala && \ wget 'http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=$FLICKR_TAG' -O- \ | grep -Po 'http://[^.]+\.staticflickr[^"]+(_b.jpg|_z.jpg)' \ | wget -P /home/pi/photoframe/$FLICKR_TAG -nc -i-

Automatic downloading of new photos

In order to have the photos refreshed, you'll need to have them download in the background. Add these two lines to your crontab with crontab -e if you're using both the Flickr photo downloader and the Flickr tag downloader.

0 * * * * python /home/pi/photoframe/download_flickr.py 30 * * * * /home/pi/photoframe/download_koalas.sh

Slideshow

Now that we have the photos downloaded and refreshed at a regular interval, we need to get the slideshow running. We'll use a simple app called the Linux framebuffer imageviewer. Stick this command into a slideshow.sh.

fbi -noverbose -m 640x480 -a -u -t 6 /home/pi/art/**/*

The option for time is set to 6 seconds, and it uses autozoom to automagically pick a reasonable zoom factor when loading images. The -u option randomizes the order.

Detecting movement

The slideshow is now running at fullscreen with a randomized assortment of Flickr photos, both your own and from favorite tags. But it's running even when you're not there! let's use the PIR (motion) sensor to turn off the monitor after no movement has been detected for 60 seconds.

Save this file as pir.py.

#!/usr/bin/env python import sys import time import RPi.GPIO as io import subprocess io.setmode(io.BCM) SHUTOFF_DELAY = 60 # seconds PIR_PIN = 25 # 22 on the board LED_PIN = 16 def main(): io.setup(PIR_PIN, io.IN) io.setup(LED_PIN, io.OUT) turned_off = False last_motion_time = time.time() while True: if io.input(PIR_PIN): last_motion_time = time.time() io.output(LED_PIN, io.LOW) print ".", sys.stdout.flush() if turned_off: turned_off = False turn_on() else: if not turned_off and time.time() > (last_motion_time + SHUTOFF_DELAY): turned_off = True turn_off() if not turned_off and time.time() > (last_motion_time + 1): io.output(LED_PIN, io.HIGH) time.sleep(.1) def turn_on(): subprocess.call("sh /home/pi/photoframe/monitor_on.sh", shell=True) def turn_off(): subprocess.call("sh /home/pi/photoframe/monitor_off.sh", shell=True) if __name__ == '__main__': try: main() except KeyboardInterrupt: io.cleanup()

Turning the monitor on and off

There are two ways to turn the monitor on and off. Use the tvservice command to turn off the monitor port.

pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ chmod 0744 monitor_off.sh pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ cat monitor_off.sh tvservice -o pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ chmod 0744 monitor_on.sh pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ cat monitor_on.sh tvservice -c "PAL 4:3" && fbset -depth 8 && fbset -depth 16

This method actually turns off the port, which works great except when you're connected to an HDMI monitor and it shuts off when the port is turned off. When you walk into the room, the port is turned back on but the monitor is off, so it doesn't come right back up. In this case, simply switch virtual terminals to blank out the screen using the chvt command.

pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ chmod 0744 monitor_off.sh pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ cat monitor_off.sh chvt 2 pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ chmod 0744 monitor_on.sh pi@raspberrypi ~/photoframe $ cat monitor_on.sh chvt 7

Fixing the monitor edges

By default, the image won't stretch to the edges of your monitor without cajoling.

Here's the before photo:

And here's with margin correction on the monitor:

To fix this, take a look at using RPiconfig. All you need to do is edit /boot/config.txt directly on the Raspberry Pi. The values you need to set are:

overscan_left=-6 # number of pixels to skip on left overscan_right=-6 # number of pixels to skip on right overscan_top=24 # number of pixels to skip on top overscan_bottom=24 # number of pixels to skip on bottom

These are my values, but every monitor is different. In order to figure out the values, I would set the values using a binary search (set high then low then halfway between the two and repeat with the new halfway point being the high/low on the correct side), and then rebooting. Eventually I found optimal values.

Note that the values will be different from the boot screen to the photo viewer. Obviously, I optimized for the photo viewer, but that means the top and bottom of the boot screen is cut off. Not much better you can expect from a tiny $50 LCD monitor.

Also, if you need to rotate or flip the display, it's easy.

display_rotate=0 Normal display_rotate=1 90 degrees display_rotate=2 180 degrees display_rotate=3 270 degrees display_rotate=0x10000 horizontal flip display_rotate=0x20000 vertical flip

Automatic start of the photo frame software

You'll want the software to start automatically on boot, so create a new init.d file at /etc/init.d/flickrd, and add the motion sensor and slideshow scripts to that new file:

sudo python /home/pi/photoframe/pir.py /home/pi/photoframe/slideshow.sh

Then set the permissions with:

sudo chmod 755 /etc/init.d/flickrd

and finally register the script to be run at startup:

sudo update-rc.d flickrd defaults

Don't forget to run the pir.py script as root, since you'll need permissions to turn the monitor on and off.

Troubleshooting

Everything above should leave you with a photo slideshow that automatically updates your photos, displays them zoomed in and fullscreen in random order, shutting off the monitor when nobody is around.

If you used the code above with no issues, congratulations! You're in a minority that can work with hardware and get everything right on the first try. For everybody else, we have to troubleshoot. Here are the issues that I ran into.

Test your LED

Just getting the Raspberry Pi to respond to my commands was tricky enough, so I wrote this basic program to just blink the onboard LED. This is the Hello, World of the Raspberry Pi.

import RPi.GPIO as GPIO import time LED_PIN = 18 def blink(pin): GPIO.output(pin,GPIO.HIGH) print " ---> On" time.sleep(.5) GPIO.output(pin,GPIO.LOW) print " ---> Off" time.sleep(.5) return # to use Raspberry Pi board pin numbers GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BOARD) # set up GPIO output channel GPIO.setup(LED_PIN, GPIO.OUT) for _ in range(0,3): blink(LED_PIN) GPIO.cleanup()

SSH'ing into your Raspberry Pi

You shouldn't have to rely on an external keyboard and a tiny screen to debug your Raspberry Pi. I suggest using Pi Finder to locate the IP address, if it's on your local network.

You can also use arp -a to find it.

Getting additional help

Turn to Stack Exchange's new Raspberry Pi section. It's still in beta as of early 2014, but there's a whole lot of great questions.

Keyboard Cat will play the Puppy Bowl halftime show

by Bill Hanstock

Beyonce? Madonna? Bruno Mars? KEYBOARD CAT.

The Puppy Bowl news just keeps on coming. First there was word that we would all get to make our own Puppy Bowl fantasy teams (big). Now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the big game's (nay; BIGGEST game's) halftime show would be headlined by the one, the only, KEYBOARD CAT. (Not the real keyboard cat, mind you. That cat is long dead. But A Keyboard Cat.)

LOOK AT THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS HALFTIME SHOW:

Keyboard Cat will perform - appropriately enough - Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven." (He even wears a Mars-ian hat.) During the feline's performance, 30 kittens will perform a domino topple and one little daredevil will make a grand entrance by parachuting onto the field.

YOU'RE ON NOTICE, NFL. STEP YOUR HALFTIME SHOW GAME UP. PLAY THE NFL OFF, KEYBOARD CAT.

Losing Aaron

by Soulskill
theodp writes "It's said that you can't fully understand someone until you meet their family. In Janelle Nanos's 'Losing Aaron,' you'll meet Bob Swartz, father of the late Aaron Swartz and adviser to MIT's Media Lab, and get a better understanding of how Aaron's family helped plant the seeds of his idealism. You'll also, sadly, see how MIT — the institution which Bob Swartz long felt stood for compassion and creativity, challenging authority, and pure scientific inquiry — took a self-described stance of 'neutrality' in the aggressive prosecution of his son that ended with Aaron's senseless death last January. 'Clearly I failed,' a tortured Bob Swartz acknowledges. 'There's no question, my son is dead. On the other hand, do I feel that I didn't try hard enough? Yes. Do I feel guilt about not trying hard enough? No. If you understand the distinction I'm trying to make. Could I have done more? Of course I could have done more. Because you can always do more. Did I put everything in that I possibly could? Did I work as hard pretty much as I knew how? Yes. Do I wish I did more? Yes. But I don't go home at night and say, "Well, you didn't care." Because I did. I cared about it more than anything else. And I don't go home at night and say, "I didn't try." Because I tried. Everything I could figure out. But I failed.'"

De Stijl, a trick-taking tile-laying game.

by Daniel Solis

This is another one of those just-literally-dreamed-it game ideas, so excuse any fuzziness in the specifics. The aesthetics of it is just intriguing to me as an abstract gamer and art major.

De Stijl
This is the art genre created by, and pretty much synonymous with, Dutch abstract expressionist Piet Mondrian. You've seen his art on all sorts of merchandise, I'm sure. Here's a game loosely inspired by that art style.

Each card in the De Stijl deck is a 2x2 grid of five possible colors: Yellow, Red, Blue, Black, White. Each card is unique, so this creates a deck of 78 cards.

Each player has a hand of three cards at all times.

Each round, each player takes one turn. On your turn, play one card from your hand onto the table, trying to make the largest contiguous color. Whoever last added a cell to the largest contiguous group will win all those cards, while the other players score 1 point per cell in that group.

  • In the example at the top of this post, the player on the far right was the last to add a cell to the yellow group, thus winning the cards. (She could have added to the red group, she just likes yellow.) The other players win 4 points.

When you win cards, add them to your scoring tableau, which persists across rounds. Your tableau is up to three rows of cards, each with its own contiguous row of a color. Cards may not overlap.

After each round, you may score-then-discard a row from your tableau. This might occur if you close off both ends of a row or if you simply need to make room for new cards.

You score points from rows based on their length, at a triangular rate: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45.

  • For example, after winning these four cards, the player could make two rows, one of red and one of yellow. This leaves an open end for both rows to grow. Alternately...

  • She could immediately close off this row of four yellow to score 10 points. She'd then discard those four cards, leaving behind the red card to grow from either end.

After each round, deal one card to each player's hand. The winner of the previous round starts the next round. Play three rounds per player. Whoever has the most points wins!

External Compliance Monitor: Apple is Blocking Interviews, Disrupting E-Book Antitrust Investigation [Updated]

by Richard Padilla
firehose

via Albener Pessoa

iBooks Michael Bromwich, the external compliance monitor assigned to Apple as a result of its e-book antitrust case, has filed papers in a U.S. District Court accusing the company of being uncooperative and obstructive in his investigation, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The lawyer stated that Apple characterized his team's activities as a “roving investigation“ with no worthwhile purpose, even going on to say that individuals within the company purposely blocked him from interviewing top-level officials and senior executives.
On Monday, Mr. Bromwich said he routinely met with top management at the three organizations he previously monitored and had "never before had a request for a meeting or interview in a monitoring assignment rejected or even deferred."

"This is far less access than I have ever received during a comparable period of time in the three other monitorships I have conducted," Mr. Bromwich said.

According to the emails filed by Mr. Bromwich, his relationship with Apple was rocky from the start. After Mr. Bromwich sent Kyle Andeer, Apple's director of competition law, an email detailing his rates and the contours of his oversight, the wide gaps between the two party's expectations came into focus.
The news follows a formal complaint filed by Apple last month over Bromwich's handling of the case, stating that the lawyer charged exorbitant fees that the company was unhappy with. Following two weeks of work, Bromwich sent Apple an invoice of $138,432, which the company described as "unprecedented in its experience." Apple also spoke out against Bromwich's requests for interviews with high level officials, stating that the lawyer was overstepping his bounds.

In July, Apple was found guilty of of conspiring with five publishers to raise the retail price of e-books, following a lawsuit brought by the United States Department of Justice. As a result of its punishment, Apple was ordered to hire an external compliance monitor to ensure that the company complies with all antitrust requirements in the future.

Apple also continues to deny that it engaged in price fixing and filed a notice in October to appeal the case, with the company likely to submit its formal arguments in early 2014.

Update: The Justice Department has urged Judge Denise Cote to reject Apple's requests and that the attacks on Bromwich "only highlight the critical need for his monitorship to continue uninterrupted", saying the company was looking to "shield its highest-level executives and board members from the perceived inconvenience" of meeting with the court monitor.

This Guy On An Old Harry Potter Forum Says Dumbledore Is A Time-Traveling Ron Weasley And I Want To Hear Him Out

by Mallory Ortberg
Courtney shared this story from The ToastThe Toast:
THE TOAST DIDNT KNOW ABOUT KNIGHT2KING AND NOW IT DOES

crazyI do not remember offhand what I was doing for the entirety of 2004; playing a bit of indifferent tennis on the William Fremd frosh/soph high school team, to be sure; carefully nursing a hallway crush that necessitated careful class-navigation strategizing; rollerblading to Subway with my friend Emily a lot, because we both really enjoyed Subway. I think I worked at Portillo’s that summer, but I can’t be entirely certain. What I most assuredly was not doing, unfortunately, was learning about the “Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron Weasley” on Harry Potter fan forums.

But I could have done. For nigh on ten years, this theory has been kept from me, until I stumbled across it quite inadvertently on the eve of this new year. Let’s hear this out, my heart cried within me. Let the man speakLet him produce evidence; let us judge the merits of his argument, unfettered by bias or prejudice.

(Did you know about this? Did you keep this from me? Were you, in short, afraid?)

Ron, our loyal Knight, will become a time traveler. He will be sent back in time to some point in the 19th century to live out the rest of his days at Albus Dumbledore, our venerable King. The exact mechanics of his journey in time are unclear, though we do believe it is unavoidable, and that it will in fact be the very move that enables Harry’s eventual defeat of Voldemort (the checkmate) and that it will also have something to do with the White Queen (Bellatrix). Though you may think us a couple of nutters for making such an outrageous claim, we do indeed have evidence. Lots and lots of evidence.

I am properly strapped in. I have read the precautionary materials; I have no known heart conditions and am neither a pregnant nor a nursing mother. All of my arms and legs are safely inside the vehicle. I am ready to go on this ride with you.

1. Uncanny Resemblance

We often joke about how unobservant Harry is, and though he hasn’t made the connection we have, he does indeed dutifully describe for us both Ron and Dumbledore’s appearance. Harry describes both Ron and Dumbledore as tall, thin and possessing a long nose (though Dumbledore’s has been broken a couple of times). These three characteristics are repeated by Harry when he meets either of these two characters for the first time in almost every book.

Dumbledore is described as having long fingers, while Ron is described as having large hands and feet. Unless Ron is a mutant, having large hands would also mean having long fingers. Dumbledore is very, very old with white hair when we first meet him, but when Harry visits a fifty years younger Dumbledore in Riddle’s diary, he is described as having auburn hair. In other words, Dumbledore was once a redhead just like Ron. While we know Dumbledore has sparkling blue eyes, JKR has very curiously neglected to have Harry mention Ron’s eye color for five whole books now. We know nearly everyone else’s eye color, including Arthur Weasley’s (blue), but we don’t know that of Harry’s best friend.

Dumbledore’s one other key characteristic, the scar above his left knee, is mentioned in the first chapter of PS/SS. While Harry hasn’t noticed any tell tale scars shaped like the London Underground on Ron, we do indeed know from PoA that Ron has sustained a serious injury to his left leg. Though JKR curiously, and very pointedly, dances around which leg exactly it is that Ron has broken, we have determined that it is indeed his left leg. When Sirius conjures the manacles and attaches Peter to Ron and Lupin, he attaches Peter to Ron’s left side. If you are injured and using only one crutch, you would, of course, use the crutch on the side of your injured leg. Sirius shackled Peter to Ron’s injured side – his left.

Unless Ron is a mutant. Ron is most assuredly not a mutant; but he may very well be a long-fingered time-traveler. Are you trying to claim that Ron Weasley, cheerful wizard-lad, is a mutant of some kind? That is a ridiculous claim; you have nothing to back up this assertion. He has big hands; it follows necessarily that he has long fingers. He is not a mutant.

But that is not all… In the last chapter of PS/SS, Dumbledore tells Harry that he lost his taste for Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans after eating a vomit flavored bean in his youth. There is one problem with this… Bertie Bott was born in 1935. While Dumbledore is over 150 years old, and for him, ‘youth’ is a relative term, he could not have possibly eaten a Bertie Bott Every Flavor Bean until the 1950′s, most likely even later, making him well over a hundred years old. Even in Dumbledore terms this is hardly his ‘youth’. Before anyone makes the brilliant observation that the Bertie Bott card isn’t canon, be sure to read the statement from Wizards of the Coast concerning their collaboration with JK Rowling on the making of the cards posted to The Leaky Cauldron.

THIS MAKES SENSE TO ME. Can you explain this? Your rebuttal of this theory must include this. The Every Flavor beans are the smoking gun.

4. Foreshadowing

Ron makes it very clear on several occasions that he hates the color maroon. Could it be because he will eventually be ‘marooned’ in time?

Yes.

Socks are a running theme throughout the series. They are used as symbols of freedom, redemption and love. Ron, however, doesn’t ever really fully appreciate the socks his mother gives him. In PoA, he tosses them aside to gush over Harry’s Firebolt. In GoF, he gives his Christmas socks to Dobby. Socks are also seen attached to Molly specifically – she is seen fussing over socks, looking for socks, folding socks, packing socks. And if Molly wasn’t mother figure enough, Tonks tells Harry her own mother has this special knack for magically folding socks. In fact, the first time we see Harry, he is in his cupboard, looking for a pair of socks (though he has to knock the spiders off of them, not having a mother to fuss over them for him). Dobby is set free with a sock. Hermione knits socks for the house elves. Dumbledore, the man who clearly has all of the fame, power, respect, possessions and wisdom one could hope for in a lifetime, sees himself holding a pair of wooly socks in the Mirror of Erised. If you read this scene with Dumbledore being Ron in mind, it takes on a whole new and really huge significance Ron indeed becomes greater than all of his brothers, yet as an old man, he is still wistful for those socks his mother gave him and he never fully appreciated.

This man has thought more carefully and considerately about the use of socks in the Harry Potter books than you have ever thought about anything your miserable and lumpen-headed life. You disgust me. Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron, and I hate your insipid, moony face.

In OotP, Draco composes a lovely song – Weasley is Our King. If that isn’t foreshadowing, I don’t know what is. One line in particular is given significance by Draco. He is heard singing it loudly during the game by Harry, and Draco later quotes it in italics – born in a bin. While Draco likes to make fun of Ron’s poverty, the phrase has a double meaning. ‘Bin’ is also a prefix meaning ‘double’ or ‘two’ – think ‘binary’. Was Ron ‘born’ twice? Leading a double life? Is Draco trying to tell us something important?

THAT’S FUCKING LATIN MOTHERFUCKERS

In OotP, Ron is nearly strangled by some purple wizard robes while cleaning up Grimmauld Place. Who do we know wears purple robes? Dumbledore, of course.

I don’t even know what this means but I love your commitment and I am so all about this journey we are taking together and yes I said yes I will Yes.

Empire.is | Via

Empire.is, by Josh Begley, is a haunting site that plots the United States’ known military bases around the globe, then shows you their photographs (courtesy of Google and Bing image search).

“I’m not really interested in exposing secret bases,” Begley tells us. “I suppose I’m just trying to sketch the broad contours of our military footprint: what does it look like from above? How does it appear on a map? And in a fashion similar to the project I made about American prisons last year, how might we see this landscape as one continuous scroll?”

Not everything is visible. Bing and Google both censor satellite imagery not only by limiting our zoom, but by creating other interventions to separate the public from sensitive information (and not always in tandem). Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands, for instance, has been obfuscated at the request of their government. On Google, it’s a wash of green polygons, while on Bing, it’s a black blob. Meanwhile, a secret drone base that Wired’s Danger Room uncovered in Saudi Arabia appears fairly clearly on Bing, whereas Google provides a simple gray box that reads, “Sorry, we have no imagery here.”

DEITYBOUNCE: NSA Exploit of the Day

by Bruce Schneier

Today's item from the NSA's Tailored Access Operations (TAO) group implant catalog is DEITYBOUNCE:

DEITYBOUNCE

(TS//SI//REL) DEITYBOUNCE provides software application persistence on Dell PowerEdge servers by exploiting the motherboard BIOS and utilizing System Management Mode (SMM) to gain periodic execution while the Operating System loads.

(TS//SI//REL) This technique supports multi-processor systems with RAID hardware and Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003, and XP. It currently targets Dell PowerEdge 1850/2850/1950/2950 RAID servers, using BIOS versions A02, A05, A06, 1.1.0, 1.2.0, or 1.3.7.

(TS//SI//REL) Through remote access or interdiction, ARKSTREAM is used to reflash the BIOS on a target machine to implant DEITYBOUNCE and its payload (the implant installer). Implantation via interdiction may be accomplished by nontechnical operator through use of a USB thumb drive. Once implanted, DEITYBOUNCE's frequency of execution (dropping the payload) is configurable and will occur when the target machine powers on.

Status: Released / Deployed. Ready for Immediate Delivery

Unit Cost: $0

Page, with graphics, is here. General information about TAO and the catalog is here.

In the comments, feel free to discuss how the exploit works, how we might detect it, how it has probably been improved since the catalog entry in 2008, and so on.

The plan is to post one of these a day for the next couple of months.

Better Data Security Through Nail Polish:

The idea is to create a seal of some kind that is impossible to copy. Glitter nail polish, once applied, has an effectively random pattern. Painted over screws, or onto stickers placed over ports, it is very hard for an attacker to replicate perfectly once broken.

2014 Sugar Bowl results: Oklahoma stuns Alabama, 45-31

by Patrick Vint

I love football

The Sooners, written off by nearly everyone against the mighty Crimson Tide, rode an all-time performance by Trevor Knight to an incredible Sugar Bowl win.

The Oklahoma Sooners shockingly defeated No. 3 Alabama 45-31 in Thursday night's Sugar Bowl, riding a 31-point first half and an incredible performance by quarterback Trevor Knight to one of the most improbable wins of the BCS era. The Sooners (11-2) ran up 433 yards of total offense against the vaunted Alabama defense and did just enough to keep Alabama from catching them during a defense-heavy second half. The Crimson Tide (11-2) lost their first bowl game since the 2008 Sugar Bowl, and lost back-to-back games for the first time since that 2008 game.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops made news during the offseason by criticizing the depth of the SEC, a criticism that blossomed into a back-and-forth with Alabama coach Nick Saban. Most believed that the Sugar Bowl would be the place of Stoops' comeuppance, the night where Saban would put Stoops and his conference in their place.

But if Stoops was going down, he was going to do it in Big-12 style. The Sooners punched the accelerator on their offensive tempo with the game's first series and never let up. The speed, combined with the effective passing of quarterback Trevor Knight, knocked the vaunted Crimson Tide defense back on its heels. Knight completed 18 of 24 pass attempts in the first half, racking up 206 yards and three touchdowns. His sole mistake, an interception on Oklahoma's first offensive series, was quickly nullified by an Alabama turnover. Most importantly, two late touchdowns gave the Sooners an improbable 31-17 halftime lead. It marked the first time since 2003 that the Crimson Tide had given up more than 30 points in one half.

On the other side of the field, Alabama halfback T.J. Yeldon ran for 47 yards on 11 first-half carries, but fumbled when he ran into offensive lineman Cyrus Kouandjio, setting up another Oklahoma score.

Bamafumble

Heisman Trophy finalist A.J. McCarron threw for a staggering 301 first-half yards against the Sooner defense, but a pair of interceptions led to two Oklahoma touchdowns. Alabama did not have to punt in the first half, but managed only 17 points.

Then the second half started, and it looked like Oklahoma's chariot turned back into a pumpkin. The Sooners' offense generated just 28 yards and four punts in the third quarter as Alabama's defense harassed Knight and swarmed to tackle his receivers. It looked like Saban had finally figured out Oklahoma's offense and was methodically strangling it to death.

Alabama's running game found its footing, as well, with backup halfback Derrick Henry taking the starring role. Henry ran for 78 yards on five third-quarter carries, including a 43-yard touchdown run that narrowed the Oklahoma lead to just seven points.

And yet, Oklahoma's defense responded, sacking McCarron four times in the next three Alabama possessions and keeping the Crimson Tide out of scoring position.

The Sooner defense held up against the Tide just long enough for Knight to find his form. The sophomore quarterback, who set career records for completions and yards in the first half alone, completed eleven consecutive passes over three series. The last of those eleven, thrown while scrambling from the Alabama pass rush, found Sterling Shepard in the end zone to cap a 92-yard touchdown drive.

Datpumpfake

The Crimson Tide was not done, however. With just under seven minutes to play, McCarron hit Henry on a swing pass. The freshman broke two tackles, threw a stiff arm, and ran past the rest of the Oklahoma defense on a 61-yard touchdown sprint.

Henry

Oklahoma's two biggest problems -- penalties and the running game -- conspired to hurt them late. With six minutes to go, a seven-point lead to protect, and a desperate need to run some clock, the Sooners committed a holding penalty on the kick return, ran ineffectively into the line once, and were left facing a third-and-9.

Oklahoma went back to its most effective play of the night: The screen pass. Knight tossed a screen pass to Brennan Clay, who dodged a defender, followed a block, and willed himself to a first down. Two plays later, another screen earned Oklahoma another set of downs. A Brennan Clay 12-yard carry moved Oklahoma into Alabama territory and forced Nick Saban to start using his timeouts. On third-and-8, Alabama defensive back Jarrick Williams was called for pass interference, and Oklahoma could run the clock down to 60 seconds.

After a punt dropped Alabama to its own 10, McCarron was stripped by Eric Striker on the Sooner sophomore's third sack of the night. Geneo Grissom scooped up the loose ball and dove for the game-sealing score. Boomer Sooner.

Box Score Hero: All of the accolades go to Trevor Knight, who finished 32-of-44 for 348 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Oklahoma had a perfect gameplan for Alabama's defense, and Knight executed it to perfection.

Rankings Ramifications: Alabama will drop precipitously, and could possibly end the season outside the Top 10 for the first time in three seasons. Oklahoma will vault into the Top 10 and should be the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the final poll.

But Did They Cover? Alabama was a 17-point favorite at kickoff. They did not cover, obviously.
