NASA selects New Horizons’ next destination after Pluto

by Loren Grush

After flying by Pluto on July 14th, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has a new destination. The mission team has selected another object in the Kuiper Belt — the region of icy bodies that orbits the edge of the Solar System — for the probe to explore next.

The spacecraft's new potential target is called 2014 MU69; it's a much smaller object than Pluto and orbits the Sun nearly 1 billion miles beyond the dwarf planet. 2014 MU69 is an ideal candidate for further exploration, because it will cost less fuel to reach than other Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs), said New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, in a statement. Using less fuel to get to the object means more will be available to power the probe’s data-gathering instruments. The images and information gathered by New Horizons will give scientists a much better understanding of the worlds at the fringes of our Solar System.

The New Horizons team can't celebrate the selection just yet, though

The New Horizons team can't celebrate the selection just yet, though; they still have to get official approval from NASA before they can extend the probe's mission and visit the new world. The team must write a proposal to the space agency to get funding for the new leg of the trip. An independent panel will review and decided on the proposal sometime in 2016.

Even without approval, the mission team still has to prepare for the flyby now or it won’t work. In late October and November of this year, they will perform four maneuvers to redirect New Horizons toward 2014 MU69. It’s the only way to guarantee they’ll have enough fuel to conduct the extended mission if it gets approved. New Horizons is expected to reach 2014 MU69 on January 1st, 2019.

Newswire: Local sheriff embarks on visionary quest to police Burning Man

by Katie Rife

Burning Man, the annual gathering that asks, “What if George Miller directed a community-theater production of Hair?,” will only register a 7.9 on the weird Richter scale this year as NBC 4 NY reports that a local cop has vowed to up the police presence at this year’s festival. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen—literally the new sheriff in town after being elected back in January—says that he and the 31 police officers (four more than last year) roaming the event grounds “will be upholding the law to the best of our ability.”

Special emphasis should be placed on that last part, though, as according to the Associated Press the festival drew a peak crowd of 65,922 people last year. Allen acknowledges this, admitting that even with the help of other law-enforcement agencies he doesn’t have enough manpower ”to issue citations to 70,000 naked ...

Newswire: Michael B. Jordan might play a vampire in comic-book movie Blood Brothers

by William Hughes

Determined to keep on throwing charismatic smiles at this “comic book movie” thing until it finally just gives in and works, Fantastic Four survivor Michael B. Jordan is in talks to star in the movie version of Dark Horse’s undead buddy-comic Blood Brothers. Written by Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller, and drawn by Evan Shaner, the book tells the story of two immortal vampires, Nick and Tree, who’ve “smoked opium with Genghis Khan, had orgies in Michelangelo’s studio, and even fronted a death metal band.” (There’s no word on whether they’ve also baked cakes with Napoleon, filed their taxes with Winston Churchill, or done a Milwaukee-based morning chat show, but one can only assume.)

Jordan is in talks to star as Tree, whose twilit bromance with Nick is threatened when the latter decides to try to become mortal again in the name of love—a ...

N.O. Artist Brandan 'BMike' Odums: 'We Make Beauty Out of Pain"

firehose

'The beneficial part has been that there were a lot of people, with good hearts, who came to New Orleans with the intention of trying to do good things. They would create projects with better access to capital, and initially, it would be about them and these new organizations. But as a result of the intentions of their projects, they would connect to existing projects. Someone might come, for example, from out of town and start a new thing that receives a lot of attention. But then, people would focus on the fact that organizations who have been doing similar things for thirty or forty years next door weren’t getting attention. That has forced people to appreciate even more the things that have existed here.'
...
'Look at what they did to the education system! We became a part of a huge experiment, post-Katrina, and there was no secret about it. All of a sudden, people decided to experiment on the children of this city with something they thought would work. It’s open-ended whether or not it worked, but it’s the fact that they were able to pull that off and do something that probably wouldn’t happen in any other city - to fire every single teacher…I don’t know anywhere else that would have worked. Not that people weren’t upset, but people aren’t dependent upon being upset to live their life. Most of the work I do with the summer camp or any youth program involves shaking that attitude off - we can’t think that this is normal or acceptable. We have to demand more, get mad, demand something.'

The prolific multi-medium artist and educator talks to us about the youth media initiative 2-Cent, his mural work in post-Katrina New Orleans and the double-edged sword of the city's "recovery."

Dan Bilzerian is one of those celebrities whose fame is difficult to comprehend. The best way to "get" him is to join his nearly 12 million million Instagram followers and dive into photos of the bearded, barrel-chested man debarking private jets with topless women, sitting on a throne next to a lion, diving into a pristine sea while a yacht can be seen in the background, and walking pensively through the woods with an assault rifle. Why Reddit’s Garbage Communities Might Be The Least Of Its Problems

firehose

'Reddit — a site ranked by Alexa as the 10th largest in the United States and the 31st largest in the world — doesn’t yet have an official, mobile-optimized version of its website (the site has had compact and scaled-down phone versions), and reviews of the Android beta version of that site which it rolled out back in April are mixed (“it doesn’t suck”).'

How does Reddit, a site that’s consistently lagged behind even the most delinquent mobile adopters, survive on an internet that’s increasingly accessed on mobile devices?

The only hangover cure: Stop drinking - BBC News

'Raiding the fridge or downing glasses of water after a night of heavy drinking won't improve your sore head the next day, Dutch research suggests.
Instead, a study concluded, the only way to prevent a hangover is to drink less alcohol.
More than 800 students were asked how they tried to relieve hangover symptoms, but neither food nor water was found to have any positive effect.'

'those who didn't get a hangover simply consumed "too little alcohol to develop a hangover in the first place".
Of those students who drank heavily, with an estimated blood alcohol concentration of more than 0.2%, almost no-one was immune to hangovers.'

Newswire: Judge cites John Oliver bit in legal opinion

by Caroline Siede

John Oliver has influenced the opinions of many Last Week Tonight viewers. But apparently he’s influencing legal decisions as well, as ninth circuit judge Marsha S. Berzon recently cited the show as part of her r opinion in the case of Paeste v. Guam. The case alleged the Guamanian government had withheld tax refunds in order to deal with a budget crisis, and then paid them back in an unregulated manner that put the poorest citizens at a low priority. In her ruling, Berzon agreed that the government of Guam was at fault.

But rulings about U.S. territories like Guam are always tricky; though residents are U.S. citizens, they are denied full constitutional rights based on a racist “Insular Cases” ruling from 1901. The ruling claims the residents of these territories are “alien races” who can’t understand “Anglo-Saxon principles” and therefore don’t deserve full rights ...

Ellen Page Thinks “Brave” Isn’t the Right Way To Describe Actors Playing LGBTQ+ Roles

by Maddy Myers

ellen-page

In a Time magazine interview, Ellen Page shook off the descriptor “brave” when she discussed her upcoming role in Freeheld. “Maybe this is a bad thing to say, but I have a hard time when people call actors brave,” she said. “I don’t really get that, because our job is to read something on a page.”

Page elaborated:

When people are [called] brave in regards to playing LGBTQ people, that’s borderline offensive. I’m never going to be considered brave for playing a straight person, and nor should I be. It’s hard to say this, because the context of the film is so deeply tragic, but for me there was a deep sense of peace on set that I had not felt in a really long time, potentially since I was a teenager and first having these really beautiful, fortunate moments in films. There was something about being out, getting to play a gay character, and getting to play a woman who is so inspiring to me—it was such an amazing experience for me. Honestly, if I played gay characters for the rest of my career, I’d be thrilled. I wish I could, honestly!

Personally, I agree that “brave” can seem condescending sometimes when used in this context. Is it “bravery” when actors (especially actors with a lot of privilege) accept these sorts of roles, or should supporting these projects be seen as an act of basic human decency?

Ellen Page went on to emphasize the importance of telling these stories, as well as the stories of other marginalized groups:

Native American and Native Canadian people: Where are these stories? I want to see these stories! And I’m hoping the shift is going to come really quick now. It’s evident from what people are watching on television that people want diversity. They want it. …I want to see gay stories, of course, because I’m gay, and I want to connect to a reflection of my life on film. But I also want to see what it’s like to be a young Native person, African-American, African-Canadian. Hopefully that will keep changing.

Page also discussed her current plans to do more film production; she has two upcoming projects that are “gay”  and, she adds, “That’s even a pain to have to call it that.”

Owen Labrie Found Not Guilty Of Felony Sex Assault At St. Paul's School

firehose

welp

The jury — nine men and three women — deliberated for about seven hours. Their decisions indicate that they believe Labrie was guilty of having sex with an underage girl, but they didn’t believe the accuser’s charge that it was not consensual.

Labrie hung his arms around his neck and cried as the guilty pleas were read. His mother, with her face in her hands, was audibly crying as well. Other family members reached out to comfort his mother. The victim sat in the courtroom in between her mother and her sister as the verdict was being read.

“Today, a measure of justice has been served for victims of sexual violence,” the victim and her family said in a statement. “While he was not convicted on all charges, Owen Labrie was held accountable in some way by a jury of his peers for crimes he committed against our daughter. This conviction requires him to take ownership for his actions and gives him the opportunity to reflect upon the harm he has caused. There is no joy in this outcome, however, as our daughter can never get back what she has lost nor can St. Paul’s School ever be our community again.”

In a press conference outside the courthouse, defense lawyer J.W. Carney said the felony conviction of using a computer to contact the girl should not be applied to a situation like this and he said he plans to file a motion to address it.

“We know why people [who] use computers to lure young children should be punished harshly,” Carney said. “I believe this computer statue was never intended for kids getting together consensually at their high school.”

Carney said Labrie is disappointed and devastated with the conviction, which “will be like a brand or a tattoo on him that will be impossible to remove.”

Grilled Cheese Throwdown

by MJ Skegg

Bread, butter, cheese and heat—the grilled cheese sandwich has to be one of the simplest meals around. It’s been a staple of the American diet since Mr Kraft first invented processed cheese back in 1915—millions were served by the armed forces during both world wars and it was a cheap way to feed a family during the Depression (and probably the Great Recession as well). But there’s a world of difference between your run-of-the-mill grilled cheese and a truly great one, especially these days with gourmet and even international versions. Thankfully, the Eastburn Grilled Cheese Invitational is here to find the best example in Portland—nine restaurants will battle it out with the public deciding on the winner (taste, originality and presentation all count). It’s an all-ages event and half the proceeds go to the Portland Women's Crisis Line. And it's tomorrow! Don't miss it.

The founders of two Facebook-acquired startups are leaving the company

by Alice Truong

Within a day of each other, two founders of startups acquired by Facebook said they are departing the company.

Shortly after Facebook announced yesterday (Aug. 27) that 1 billion people had used the social network in a single day, Josh Miller, founder and CEO of Branch, made his own announcement that it was his last day at the company. Miller joined Facebook in January 2014 when his eight-person startup was bought by Facebook. As a product manager, he oversaw the development of Rooms, Facebook’s forum app.

Today, we announced 1 billion people used Facebook in 24 hours. It's was also my last day at the company. More on what's next very soon!

— Josh Miller (@joshm) August 27, 2015

Following that news, Ilya Sukhar, who founded the development platform Parse, said today that he was also leaving the company. Facebook acquired Parse in April 2013 so it could offer backend tools for mobile developers. At the company, Sukhar was the face of the social network’s development initiatives. This past March, he took the stage at Facebook’s F8 conference to unveil new tools that let programmers build apps for connected devices. In May, he said he had moved over to Messenger.

1/ Personal news: Today is my last day at Facebook. It was an exhilirating adventure at a remarkable co. But it’s time to do something new.

— Ilya Sukhar (@ilyasu) August 28, 2015

The fact that they’re leaving Facebook isn’t entirely surprising. It’s commonplace for founders to exit after their companies have been acquired, and both Miller and Sukhar hinted at new projects.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment on their departures.

Uber hires hackers who remotely hijacked a Jeep

by Colin Lecher

Security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek caused a stir last month when they found a way to remotely hijack Chrysler vehicles, using a Jeep Cherokee in an impressive, frightening demonstration. Now it looks like they'll be moving on to Uber, as Reuters reported today that the duo have accepted new positions at the company's Advanced Technology Center. Miller has since confirmed the move on Twitter:

Miller previously worked as a security researcher at Twitter, and prior to that was known for his work hacking Apple devices. Valasek was director of vehicle security research at security firm IOActive, which he recently announced he was leaving. Even before the Jeep hack, the two researchers had become infamous in security circles for their work hacking cars.

The news comes as Uber is reportedly expanding its work on self-driving cars. This week, the company announced it was partnering with the University of Arizona to research the technology.
