Xbox One is terrible on Google, amazing on Bing
If you type "The Xbox One is" on Google, autocomplete will helpfully offer suggestions based on what the world is saying about it. Right now those suggestions are less than flattering. "The Xbox One is terrible," reads the first item. It's also "ugly" and "a joke."
Microsoft's proprietary search engine, Bing, would have you believe a different tale.
Entering the same search into Bing offers up one single suggestion: "The Xbox One is amazing."
To the casual observer, it looks like Microsoft is using its own pointless relic of a search engine to falsify public opinion about a heavily criticized product. Of course, we all know Microsoft would never do anything like that. When Microsoft has an unpopular product it doesn't just shove it down everybody's throat and try to convince them they secretly love it. Oh wait ...

Feedly Added 8 Million Users Since Google Reader's Shutdown Announced

Google's decision to kill off Google Reader may have frustrated longtime users, but it has clearly been a boon for similar RSS reader services, perhaps the most notable being Feedly.
Feedly had 12 million users as of the end of May, up from 4 million users just before Google announced in mid-March that it planned to kill off Reader, a rep for Feedly told Mashable. That represents a threefold increase in users in less than three months.
SEE ALSO: Check Out These Google Reader Alternatives
Feedly previously announced that it had added 500,000 new users in the first 48 hours after Google Reader's demise was announced — prompting it to add new servers and introduce a suggestion forum. It added another 3 million new users in the first two weeks. Read more...

Fatbobthis is amazing
John McAfee is one weird guy, and this video only serves to bolster that reputation. Uploaded to YouTube last night, it's a hilarious—and entirely NSFW—video which sees the man himself teach you how to uninstall McAfee Antivirus.
The thing is full of bad language, misogyny partial nudity, drug references... all the kinds of things you'd expect from a video starring John McAfee. Above all, it's actually really quite funny. Enjoy. [YouTube via Verge]
Ken Levine will write the new Logan's Run movie
A remake for Logan's Run is in the works, and it's surprisingly going to be written by BioShock Infinite's master guru, Ken Levine. He isn't leaving Irrational Games or anything like that; he is just writing this as a side project.
Deadline called this a project of passion for Levine, who will be joining Bryan Singer, the Producer of the X-Men movies, House M.D., and Jack the Giant Slayer. Singer has been trying to get this movie made since 2004, so I wouldn't expect it to come out anytime soon, but I am really looking forward to seeing what Levine does with the script.

Use PRISM Break To Reduce Your NSA-Related Paranoia

Okay PRISM. It's enough already. Erosion of privacy! Whatever. Apathy is setting in. But actually we should probably all be putting some thought into what we're doing with our private information. Maybe you're already trying to. But it can feel like the walls have eyes no matter where you go. Prism Break is a guide to opting out.
Created by designer Peng Zhong, the site is basically a resource for figuring out how to go off the NSA's grid. It recommends everything from desktop e-mail clients, to cloud storage options and secure social networks. The site also notes how to maximize security in software settings. And if you use one of the suggested resources you won't be alone. Sites like DuckDuckGo, a private search engine, have been logging major traffic increases, like a 26 percent rise in search queries, since PRISM news started pouring out. Prism Break says that you should "Stop reporting your online activities to the American government with these free alternatives to proprietary software." If there are viable options, we should at least know them and consider it, right? [VentureBeat]
Science Happens In Places That Are Beautiful By Accident

Those spikey deals look pretty menacing. It wouldn't be a bad guess to think that they're abstract art meant to invoke a Medieval torture aesthetic. But that's way off. The infinitely repeating barbs are part of the anechoic chambers at the Technical University of Denmark. Basically they absorb sound and electromagnetic waves so scientists can test wave-emitting devices for things like volume and clarity. And they look badass doing it.
Photographer Alastair Philip Wiper shot the resonance chambers and other research facilities as part of a series called SOLAR / ANECHOIC, which showed through the Copenhagen Photo Festival. The photographs are meant to capture the inadvertent beauty of spaces where scientists conduct research. Things may not always be what they seem, which is certainly true in research, which is why it's pretty cool that all those razor-sharp spikes are just made out of foam. [My Modern Met]

How to Clean a Cartridge Type Swimming Pool Filter
Fatbobdis what you need to do nigga
Edit Steps
Preparation
- Purchase quality cartridge type filters. These will have a pleated fiberglass mat or synthetic filter media, not paper. The cleaning methods described here will cause cheap media to break down, leaving the filter useless.
- Run the system with your filter as you normally would. When it becomes dirty, remove it from the pump-filter assembly.
Cleaning the Filter
- Rinse any debris from the filter with a garden hose and spray nozzle before the filter dries after you have removed it. Drying will allow the collected debris to set into the filter media, making it more difficult to remove later.
- Allow the filters to dry thoroughly, preferably in bright sunshine, which has effective algaecidal properties.
- Shake or use an air compressor to remove loose particles from the filter's fabric. This can be done by tapping it on a surface, brushing with a stiff paint brush, or other means. Note that this step is in preparation for the actual cleaning, so getting it perfect is not necessary.
- Save the filters you would normally throw in the trash until you have several to clean. Because cleaning involves using chlorinizer and takes time, cleaning individual filters is not efficient. five gallon/18.9 liter plastic paint bucket will hold about five type C filters.
- Prepare a large bucket with a tight-fitting lid to soak your filters. Use a solution of 1 part pool chlorinator to 6 parts water. Submerge the filters in this solution, then place the lid on the bucket.
- Allow the filters to soak to kill any microorganisms that are trapped in the filter media, and to break down any organic contaminants. One day is good start, but 3 to 5 days will provide better results.
- Remove the filters and rinse in a bucket of clean water. Agitate the filters by holding them at one end, and dunking them briskly in and out of the rinse water. You should see a cloud of rinsed contaminants coming from the filter.
- Hang or place the filters in bright sunlight and allow them to dry thoroughly. Any more dirt that is trapped on the surface of the filter should be brushed off, using a stiff bristled paint or parts cleaning brush.
- Seal the bucket you soak the filters in when not in use so you won't have to add additional chlorinizer each time you clean filters. Some sediment will accumulate in the bottom of this bucket, but it doesn't affect the usability of the solution.
- Mix a solution of muriatic acid and water to dissolve minerals that accumulate in the filter media, reducing the rate water can pass through the filter. Use another clean bucket with a lid that seals tightly. Add about 2/3 of a bucket of clean water, then carefully pour in enough muriatic acid to give you a 1 part acid to 10 parts water solution. In a typical 5 gallon bucket, this means about 3 gallons of water to 1 1/2 quarts acid.
- Soak the filters in the acid solution until it quits bubbling. The bubbles are an indication the acid is reacting with the mineral deposits, and when the bubbling has quit, the minerals should be dissolved.
- Seal this container when you are finished with it. If you keep your containers sealed tightly, the chemicals (either the acid or chlorinizer) will not weaken and may be reused for several cleanings. Allowing the containers to remain open will allow the chlorine to evaporate out of your solution, rendering it useless in a short time.
- Rinse the acid cleaned filters with plenty of fresh water, then allow them to dry, shake any remaining collected dirt from the pleats, and they are ready either to proceed to chlorine soaking, or if this step has followed the chlorine soaking, they are ready for reuse in your pool.
- Reuse your cleaned filters.
Edit Tips
- Store filters in a plastic bag or other container when they are cleaned to keep insects from making a home in them.
- Pool filter cleaning chemicals are marketed specifically for cleaning cartridge type filters, but the cost is fairly high in consideration of their performance.
- Using a 5% muriatic acid solution to remove calcium deposited in the filter media will increase the filter's performance if high concentrations of minerals exist in your pool water.
- For cleaning filters in pools where a large number of people swim, and suntan lotions or other materials may accumulate, using a dish washing liquid solution to presoak the filter may yield superior results.
- Discard any filters that become damaged or deteriorate to the point they no longer filter efficiently.
- Filters may become clogged much more rapidly when using clarifier in the pool water, as this product will cause the particles that cloud the water to be trapped more easily in the filter media.
- You may want to use a new filter instead of dealing with acids, having a sealed bucket of bleach around and using used filters.
- Remove and clean or replace the filter on a regular basis.
- Remove the collected dirt from the filter in stages, removing as much as possible in each stage. Simply tapping or brushing the filter after it has dried in the sun will reduce the amount of organic contaminants that need to be broken down in the cholrinator soak.
- Maintain your pool water chemistry to minimize the organic contaminants in the water, making the filter's job much easier.
- Make sure the filter/pump unit is working correctly before using shock or adding chlorine or other chemicals to the pool.
Edit Warnings
- The organic matter captured by the filter can be irritating, so avoid breathing and exposure to the dust when removing it either with a brush or by blowing out with compressed air.
- The solution of chlorinizer you soak the filter in is very strong. Do not splash on clothes, and keep the bucket sealed tightly and out of reach of children.
- Use caution when pouring either liquid chlorinizer or muriatic acid. Add the chemical to the water, never the water to concentrated chemicals, and avoid direct contact with skin.
Edit Things You'll Need
- Swimming pool filters to start with.
- A stiff bristled brush.
- A large bucket with a lid that closes tightly.
- A vacuum cleaner or air compressor (optional).
- Liquid chlorinizer
- Muriatic acid (optional)
- A water hose with a spray nozzle

India Will Send the World's Last Telegram on July 14
Photo: Rajanish Kakade/AP
144 years after the invention of electric telegraphy, the last telegram service in the world will shut down. This technology is still used in India, where about 5,000 telegrams are sent down the wires daily. But on July 14, it will...stop.
The BSNL board, after dilly-dallying for two years, decided to shut down the service as it was no longer commercially viable.
"We were incurring losses of over $23 million a year because SMS and smartphones have rendered this service redundant," Shamim Akhtar, general manager of BSNL's telegraph services, told the Monitor.
What do you think the last telegram should say?

Hairy Stockings Are China's Latest 'Anti-Pervert' Trend

During balmier months, many young women beat the heat by showing more skin in short-shorts and sundresses. But some in China are opting to do the opposite, perhaps in an attempt to fend off oglers.
A user named Happy张江 on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter equivalent, uploaded a photo of stockings designed to look like hairy man legs. The picture has since gone viral, likely due to its quirky concept.
"Super sexy, summertime anti-pervert full-leg-of-hair stockings, essential for all young girls going out," the caption reads.
It is unclear whether or not the 'Anti-Pervert' stockings are available for purchase. Read more...
