Apple’s .mobi insanity

by ppk
Ilya Furman

What the fuck

Oh my God, oh my God. Apple thinks it has a bright idea, but craps all over your beautiful responsive sites. Even worse, it’s being inconsistent from iPhone to iPad. I don’t know what they were smoking when they thought this up, but I want some.

OK, so what’s going on? This morning a follower pointed out an article that describes how Safari iOS makes a total fucking mess of the meta viewport when the site is hosted on a .mobi domain.

Normally, without a meta viewport, Safari’s layout viewport is about 980px wide. When your site is on a .mobi domain, though, Safari automatically applies the device-width meta viewport if you don’t have it in your code.

Compare my test hosted here on QuirksMode with this test a kind reader put on his .mobi domain. The tests are exactly the same; the outcome is different.

The linked page does not have a meta viewport applied. In the normal test this means Safari on iPhone makes the viewport 980px wide. In the .mobi test the viewport becomes 320px, though, as if a meta viewport device-width is applied.

The tests link to two more tests that are supposed to set the layout viewport to 380px and the device-width (320px for the iPhone). These work normally. So the effect appears only when no meta viewport is set.

On the iPhone, that is. The iPad behaves quite differently.

If you try the same two test pages, mine gives 980px, but the .mobi one gives 640px. Even worse, the 380px and device-width tests return again 640px, and 768px. That last value is expected: it’s the device width of the iPad. But the first two aren’t.

Tested on iPhone Safari on iOS 5 and 6; iPad on iOS 5.

Device No viewport viewport 380 viewport device-width
iPhone Expected: 980px
Actual: 320px
380px 320px
iPad Expected: 980px
Actual: 640px
Expected: 380px
Actual: 640px
768px

Changing the browser’s default behaviour based on top-level domain is bad enough. But implementing your own ridiculous rules wrong on the iPad is much, much worse.

If you’re creating a site that should work on the iPad and is going to be hosted on a .mobi domain, test it on the actual server. Your tests on your dev server are not enough.

And yes, I’m going to test this on other browsers, too, time allowing. So far I have ascertained that Chrome and Android WebKit on Android 4, as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook browser, do not exhibit this bug and behave normally on a .mobi domain.

How Much You Care

What if people who say they “could care less” actually mean it?  In other words, they care very little and are just trying to be polite.  -Raf

Did you know you can use Gists for:

Unrelated to the services above, here’s a pick of some of my recent gists that might be interesting:

“When I’m introspective about the last few years I think the biggest mistake that we made, as a company, is betting too much on HTML5 as opposed to native… because it just wasn’t there. And it’s not that HTML5 is bad. I’m actually, on long-term, really excited about it. One of the things that’s interesting is we actually have more people on a daily basis using mobile Web Facebook than we have using our iOS or Android apps combined. So mobile Web is a big thing for us.”

Seymour waited for Fry for twelve years. Fry was frozen in 2000. That means this year, 2012, is the year Seymour dies.

Bug tracker short urls

by Paul Irish

I've found myself filing and watching tickets on browser bug trackers a lot more lately.

Turns out, they have some handy shorturls which make for easy linking to tickets.

wkb.ug/19264 for webkit (or webk.it/19264 or webkit.org/b/19264 )
bugzil.la/475606 for firefox/mozilla
crbug.com/11359 for google chrome (new ticket: new.crbug.com)
mcrbug.com/ for google chrome on android tickets (new ticket: new.mcrbug.com)
crosbug.com/59 for google's chrome os
crrev.com/41850 for chromium changesets
jqbug.com/7585 for jQuery bug tracker
wkrev.com/124067 for WebKit changesets

In fact, the webk.it URLs are debuting today! I luckily convinced Wolfango Chiappella of Wolfango'Studio (who owns the domain) to set up a redirect. Grazie di cuore!

2010.07.22: Mihai of the google reader team added a nice new one for chromium changesets
Mozilla also uses bit.ly pro for all of their MDC docs and such, So if you go through bit.ly you get a nice mzl.la link.

2011.01.20: added jqbug. thx mathias.
2011.10.13: added webkit.org/b/xxxx
2012.02.22: Added wkb.ug and mcrbug. thx mathias. again. :)
2012.02.22: Thanks Alex. Rly.
2012.08.17: I wanted a webkit changeset one, and guessed if someone set up wkrev.com. They had! Thanks you!

Кто просил альбом?

by andreevbox@gmail.com

Fortune 500 In The Year 2030

In 2031 the Mars Rover IV discovers that under its crust, Mars is 70% gold and NASA shoots up to the #1 spot.  (And before anyone points out that NASA is an agency of the US government I’d like to retort with: Shut up and let me make my joke.)  -Will

Samsung Canada Gives Fan Custom Galaxy SIII for Viral Hit, Births Another Viral Hit

by Lambert Varias

Redditor Perma aka Shane is one lucky bastard. Samsung Canada gave him the “only customized SIII in Canada”, featuring Shane’s own drawing of a dinosaur. How did this happen? Simple. He just asked for it.

samsung canada dinosaur galaxy s iii

Three months ago, Shane shared the above screenshot on Reddit, saying “Well, Samsung Canada has won me over.” I’m pretty sure neither Shane nor Samsung Canada’s Facebook guy didn’t expect just how popular his screenshot would become, but it did, and everyone had a good laugh. Then yesterday, Shane shared a new series of pictures on Reddit, saying “Well, Samsung Canada has me over again.”

Shane’s newer pictures obviously became a hit as well.

samsung canada dinosaur galaxy s iii 3

Samsung Canada has obviously dug itself into a hole here. They’ll have to send Shane another gadget for this latest round of positive media, which will prompt Shane to post pictures of the gadget, which will get Samsung more love, another gadget…. until eventually Shane becomes the Prime Minister of Canada. And if that doesn’t happen? Shane, may I suggest your next target.
