The Max Headroom signal intrusion hack is one of those hacker legends that seems too good to be true: In 1987, an unknown group hacked into the signal of local Chicago TV channel WGN-TV. 25 years later, Vice's Motherboard blog has published a fascinating investigation into who pulled off the still unsolved crime.

Han Solo’s DL-44 Blaster From ‘Star Wars’ to be Sold at Auction
A light version of the DL-44 blaster used by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in the original Star Wars trilogy will be sold at auction on December 21, 2013 at 11 AM PST via Invaluable.com. The starting bid for the iconic blaster is $200,000.
Based on the German issue Mauser C96 pistol, this piece, measuring 11 in. long, was custom-made for the film from resin by casting the original hero prop from the first ‘Star Wars: A New Hope,’ it therefore exhibits the same serial number as the hero prop, which is thought to no longer exist. The blaster is exactly in its original filming condition and therefore exhibits wear from use, but retains all of the original details, including the flash suppressor and scope (the eye-piece of which is detailed with reflective scotch-lite tape). The added distinction of this particular piece is that it was also likely used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, as both characters shared the same style of weapon in Empire. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from a noted Star Wars collector. To our knowledge this is the only known example of this type of blaster in private hands.

Mad Max: Fury Road Directed by George Miller Set for May 2015 Release
For the type of movie fan who counts post-apocalyptic thrillers as a favorite cinematic genre, the impending resurrection of the Mad Max franchise is big news, as the original 1979 Australian film was an underrated classic (and also hugely influential, in terms of both style and storytelling). Warner Bros and Village Roadshow has announced that Mad Max: Fury Road will hit screens on May 15th, 2015, with Tom Hardy stepping into the title role formerly made famous by Mel Gibson. And directing the film? George Miller, who was responsible for Mad Max and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Said to take place between the events of the first and second installments of the trilogy, Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult and Zoe Kravitz, along with a cameo by Mel Gibson.

Sneaky Pelican Steals a Fish From a Picky Sea Lion
A slow moving sea lion loses his fish to a sneaky pelican. According to HornbergerJenn, who uploaded the video, the sea lion was very persnickety that day.
After a day or fishing, this sea lion jumped up on our boat begging for fish. He was a little picky, where he only wanted whole fish – not a portion of a fish. When he didn’t take it right away, a pelican swooped in and stole it!
It looks like the sea lion learned a very hard lesson this day: He who hesitates is lost.

Philadelphia Woman’s 144,000 VHS Tape Collection of 35 Years of TV News To Be Digitized by the Internet Archive
Marion Stokes
Today the Internet Archive announced they will soon be receiving a comprehensive video collection of 35 years of U.S. television news—a bonanza for their ongoing effort to archive all television news since the advent of television. The video collection comes not from an institution or company, but a private individual, librarian and activist Marion Stokes, who single-handedly and continuously recorded the news from 1977 until her death at age 83 in 2012. Driven by a desire to preserve the news, Stokes recorded national and local news (in Boston and later, Philadelphia) with an array of TVs and VCRs in her home. She built her daily routine around the project, feeding her VCRs with fresh tapes at regular intervals each day.
In the end she amassed an astonishing 144,000 VHS tapes, enough to fill 4 large shipping containers. In the coming days the collection will embark on a journey from Philadelphia to the Internet Archive’s storage facility in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Archive will then begin the time-consuming task of digitizing the tapes. For more on Marion Stokes and her remarkable collection, see this Fast Company article.
