This "Stupid Motorist Law" Makes Drivers Pay for Their Flood Rescues

As dependable as the sunrise, every flash flood disaster produces photos of people who drive into floods only to get stuck and need to be rescued by emergency crews. Arizona actually has a law in place that charges these less-than-bright drivers for the full cost of their rescue, plus a hefty penalty.

Video of the Mount Tavurvur Volcano Erupting in Papua New Guinea

by Brian Heater
Mrdesplaines

paul, don't skip you'll miss the best part.

YouTube user bacobjee captured some impressive closeup footage of Mount Tavurvur on the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea erupting on August 29th, 2014. The active volcano has erupted a number of times over the past century, including an eruption in 2006 and one particularly massive occurrence in 1937 alongside the nearby volcano Vulcan, which killed a combined 508 people. The video captures the initial eruption, a shockwave and some commentary by nearby viewers.

Holy…smoking toledos.

‘No No’, A Documentary About Legendary Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Dock Ellis, Who Threw a No-Hitter on LSD

by Brian Heater

No, No is a new documentary directed by Jeff Radice that examines the life of legendary 1970s Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis. Ellis is probably best known for having thrown a no-hitter while high on LSD, but the major leaguer was also an important figure for civil rights in sports.

Dock was often at the forefront of controversy and has been called the “Muhammad Ali of Baseball.” He was an outspoken leader of a new wave of civil rights in sports, when black athletes were no longer content to accept second-class treatment or keep their mouths shut about indignities. For this, the press labeled him a militant.

Nike Air Max 1 GS “Triple Black”

by Patrick
Mrdesplaines

so good.

Nike Air Max 1 GS “Triple Black”Nike continues with its Triple Black theme with the latest model to don the hot summer look being the Nike Air Max 1 GS. Several models over the summer have received a similar treatment, including the Nike Air Max 95, the Nike Roshe Run, and, just recently, the Nike Air Foamposite One, but it’s Tinker’s classic kick’s turn to get the blacked-out colorway across its tumbled leather and suede upper. Finishing the look, sturdy mesh rounds out the toe and hits in touches around the suede mudguard while black accessories round out the base. Continue after the jump to see more and look for these now at Titolo.

A Playful Baby Fennec Fox Romps Excitedly Around His Home at the San Diego Zoo Nursery

by Lori Dorn

A playful baby fennec fox romps around at his home at the San Diego Zoo Nursery, digging in the sand, searching inside boxes, tossing around toy mice and even getting a few hugs from the local humans.

A three-month-old fennec fox is full of energy and ready to play in the Children’s Zoo Nursery at the San Diego Zoo. The young male, who weighs just 1.5 pounds, is in quarantine before training to serve as an animal ambassador for his species. The nocturnal fox pup has spurts of energy, so animal care staff have been giving him lots of toys and food puzzles to help keep him busy. For example, meal worms are hidden in cardboard boxes or in his sand mound, which encourages the fox to use some of his natural searching and digging behaviors. The fox’s favorite toys to play with are small, plush toy mice.

An Unused Vocal Track by Chubby Checker for an Advertisement About the Atari Video Game ‘Dig Dug’

by Rollin Bishop

Matt Osborne, son of former Atari vice president Don Osborne, recently discovered a cassette tape that featured an unused vocal track by singer-songwriter Chubby Checker for an advertisement about the Atari video game Dig Dug. It’s unclear why Checker’s track went unused in the advertisement — which won a Clio award for “U.S. Cinema Advertising” in 1983.

The only info that I have about it was that ATARI had envisioned a somewhat ’50’s styled take on the song, inspired, in part, by Chubby Checker’s hit “The Twist.” At the time that I’d heard the song and had got possession of the tape, it was fully intended that Chubby’s song would be used in the final commercial. It’s been over 30 years, that and I was about 13 at the time, so details are fuzzy, but I remember my father being extra excited that Chubby was involved in the project and had great things to say about having met him. After that, I don’t recall why his song was eventually dropped in leu of the one in the final cut of the commercial.

A New Father Got An Unexpected Surprise At This Photo Shoot With His Newborn Baby

Mrdesplaines

the kids face is the best.

This is one photo the parents weren’t expecting.

When doting dad Al Ferguson planned to capture the sheer joy he felt as a new father in an adorable photo shoot with his baby, he probably didn't expect the surprise he received.

We wanted to capture Ted in the earliest stages. Those first few weeks go so quickly, we wanted some quality reminders of him. Photos are very precious as they capture a moment and create a memory.

During the shoot I felt his tummy muscles tense up and in that moment I knew what was about to happen. Unfortunately, it was just a moment and before I could do anything Ted exploded from his bum.

He was amazed that his photos have gone viral, but felt that the situation was something parents could relate to: "I think that parents worldwide relate to the image and enjoy the funny side of it, and non-parents are probably just a little grossed out by it. Bizarrely, when you become a parent, your own child's poo doesn't seem that disgusting."

Bearded Welsh Hero Drinks Entire Bottle of Jack in 15 Seconds

by Jay Hathaway

Meet the new King of Wales, Will Williams. He recently consumed an entire bottle of Jack Daniel's in just shy of 15 seconds, which, I'm given to understand, entitles him to some kind of sword-in-the-stone style claim on the monarchy that supersedes the current hereditary system. And makes Wales independent, for some reason. Congratulations/sorry, Wales!
