Local history grant opportunity from Internet Archive

by Katherine Adelberg

Texas public librarians have an opportunity to participate in the Community Webs grant project from Internet Archive. Applications are due next week on August 25th. Here’s a link to the application form.

A brief description from their website:

The Internet Archive is accepting applications from public librarians interested in participating in a program of continuing education and training to enable libraries to build collections of historically-valuable, web published materials documenting their local communities. This program is offered by the Internet Archive in partnership with WebJunction, and with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to provide subsidized training, professional development, and web archiving services.

Each library will receive the equivalent of $25,000 in web archiving services, equaling a 0.50 TB archival data budget per year for five years (extending beyond the two years of this project) to build local history web archive collections. This includes access to and training on the Archive-It web application.

Each librarian will also receive $3,500 per year to attend cohort meetings, participate in training, conferences and professional development, and local events.

Legislation Email Alerts on Congress.gov

by Steven M. Cohen

Posted in News

“Moving from a 20-year-old system to our new, modern Congress.gov platform has many advantages. One of these is that, starting today, email alerts are available on Congress.gov.  There are three different types of alerts in this initial release: Member of Congress, legislation, and the Congressional Record.  Bill and member alerts were an often-requested feature on THOMAS and I’m excited that we are now able to fulfill those requests in the new system.” (via In Custodia Legis)

Laptop and iPads have long been available for free in-library use at the St. Joe County Public Library, but now they’re available via these new vending machines in the lobby at the Main Library. Patrons must be at least 18 years old and have a county library card. Each laptop computer or iPad may be checked out for three hours for free. There is a $1 charge for each hour after that. Is this a service you think you’ll use?
