Comedian Dave Hill's "band" Witch Taint finds the inherent humor in black metal

don't know who this guy is, but love everything about this headline, from the word "band" in quotation marks, to the phrase "inherent humor in black metal."

Comedian Dave Hill has one of those vaguely familiar faces to TV watchers; maybe you recognize his hangdog expression from his small but recurring role as the Creep in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, or from when he popped up as the Bookstore Man in the “Tale From The Crypt” episode of The Tick. Hill hides his face behind…

[E3 2018] Cyanide Studio Unveils ‘Call of Cthulhu’ Trailer

by Pat Torfe

Things have been slow going for Cyanide Studio’s Call of Cthulhu. The game’s been in development for a while now, and only just got its website last month. But now, with E3 winding down, the team have released a much-needed lore trailer that adheres pretty pretty close to the original Lovecraft story.

The official synopsis goes like this: “Faced with terrors beyond human comprehension, you must delve deep into the secrets that lay beneath the surface of the Darkwater Island community. Speak with the island’s inhabitants, overcome deadly horrors, and discover cryptic clues, in a desperate attempt to expose the terrible truth at the heart of the Hawkins case.

Multiple paths lay ahead for you to choose from – your development of Pierce’s skills and the relationships you have with other characters will directly impact how you proceed in your investigation. This is no easy task however, as certain events may cause Pierce to develop mental traumas that impact his ability to cope, while the descent into the occult will cause his sanity to rapidly dwindle.”

Call of Cthulhu releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018.

Trailer Gives Birth to ‘The Nun’, the “Darkest” of the ‘Conjuring’ Films

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

didn't really care for the conjuring so much, but might be able to dig this one...

The first teaser trailer for The Nun is here and promises the “darkest” chapter in the Conjuring Universe. The footage looks right out of Wan’s Conjuring films, detailing Taissa Farmiga (TV’s “American Horror Story”) as a nun who has been seeing visions of a demonic nun since she was a child. The trailer builds to creepy footage of Farmiga walking through a dark hallway as the Nun approaches. There’s also a fun easter egg if you listen closely… it sounds like the ringing bell from the first Conjuring.

What’s even more exciting is that this is just a teaser, which means a full trailer is still forthcoming.

In The Nun

“When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.”

The Nun stars Oscar-nominated Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV’s “American Horror Story”) as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet (Elle) as local villager Frenchie, Charlotte Hope (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (“Toni Erdmann”) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.

Say your prayers as The Nun returns to theaters on September 7, 2018.

StudioADI Selling ‘Alien: Resurrection’ “Newborn Alien” Busts from Actual Production Molds

by John Squires

pretty rad

“There is nothing more exact to the original character than this.”

Attempts to clone an Alien were beyond science’s ability in Alien: Resurrection, resulting in the creation of the tortured creature known as the “Newborn.” A human-Xenomorph hybrid, the so-called Newborn was the handiwork of the masters over at studioADI, and the company is now selling 1:1, screen accurate replica busts.

The 30″ long x 20″ wide x 24″ tall busts are limited to just 50 pieces worldwide.

“Cast in translucent fiberglass from ADI’s Hero mold. Like other pieces it is painted in the same detail as our film work, then coated with a high gloss automotive sealer.”

As you’d probably imagine, these extremely limited pieces are selling for a pretty penny, up for grabs in the ADI shop for $4,000 each. Only for the most dedicated fans!

50 Years Later, ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Still Terrifies and Inspires Modern Horror Hits

by Meagan Navarro
Emahlstadt

watched this all the way through for the first time on sunday night after we watched hereditary. the inspirational elements were pretty obvious. also, rosemary's baby is pretty damn good, especially considering the age of the film.

“This is no dream! This is really happening!”

First released in theaters 50 years ago, on June 12, 1968, Rosemary’s Baby changed horror as we know it today, effectively inspiring a new wave of horror that forever altered the genre and paving the way for major hits like The Exorcist. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Ira Levin, released just the year before, Rosemary’s Baby won over audiences and critics, earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Ruth Gordon, and was eventually selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for being historically and culturally significant. Rosemary’s Baby remains an all-time great horror film, but like most trailblazers, the path to forge new territory came with blood, sweat, and tears behind the scenes.

Rosemary’s Baby nearly became an entirely different film before production even began. Hoping to segue into a more prestigious career with Oscar-winning potential, B-movie gimmick horror director William Castle immediately knew Ira Levin’s novel had major potential to give him what he was looking for and mortgaged his home to purchase movie rights. Having a contract with Paramount, he went to them with the pitch to direct. They, however, wanted young up and comer Roman Polanski and offered Castle a producer’s role instead. Backed into a corner, and not wanting to tie up the project financially for years to come, Castle begrudgingly accepted. Castle’s inputs on the film were minor, at least from an artistic standpoint, and his dreams of mainstream respectability were never realized as he suffered from kidney failure soon after the film’s release. Even still, without Castle’s recognition of Levin’s novel about a housewife pregnant with the Antichrist, Rosemary’s Baby wouldn’t exist as we know it.

For his part, Polanski immediately keyed in on the story element that would make Rosemary’s Baby so effective and chilling; deception. Polanski wanted to focus on the story from Rosemary’s perspective only, relying on ambiguity of the supernatural and using it to create an anxiety in the audience. Rosemary, played effectively by Mia Farrow, is the epitome of a ‘50s housewife. Eager to please her husband and eager to have a baby, Rosemary puts the needs of everyone else before hers, especially when her health is at stake. Even when she wakes after that fateful night thinking her husband has raped her, she’s quick to forgive. All the while, ominous signs are around her that things may or may not be all in her head. That Rosemary’s fate is almost never in her own control lends to the overall feeling of anxious helplessness that pervades the narrative; the only two decisions in the film that are entirely her own is her choice to move into the Bramford apartment and to give in to her maternal instincts in the closing moments. Any time Rosemary dares to stand up for herself she’s consistently manipulated by those around her. Those she’s meant to trust. Anyone who does genuinely seek to help Rosemary is quickly eliminated.

Polanski further played with deception in terms of what Satanists look like. These weren’t the Gothic characters, ominous and robed, seen before. These were welcoming neighbors in New York City. Roman and Minnie Castavet were nosy, elderly neighbors who dress their age and bring home-baked goods (albeit drugged). Dr. Sapirstein, her appointed doctor by the Castavets, is renounced in his field; no one would ever suspect that he too is a member of the coven planning to usher in the Antichrist. The opening credits are conveyed via pink cursive over a panning cityscape, a style choice that gives the opposite impression of a horror film. Polanski’s final decision would solidify the film’s greatness; he never showed us the Devil. By refusing to show the audience the Devil, it forever remains etched in the nightmares of imagination.

Despite the ambiguity that would deeply root Rosemary’s journey in psychological terror, it’s no surprise that the film stirred up controversy after release. The Catholic League protested, The National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures gave it a condemned rating, and some theaters even banned it from playing. It didn’t stop the film from becoming a money maker at the box office. Rosemary’s Baby-inspired a slew of Satanic horror soon after, but its effects on the genre are much more profound than that. It took the ultimate battle between good versus evil and put it in the seemingly mundane home of a vulnerable housewife. Sweet, eager-to-please Rosemary whose internal struggle with her faith is only barely hinted at became the mother to the Antichrist without her consent. Even 50 years later, that’s still terrifying.

Legal Claim Brings an Indefinite End to New ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’ Content

by John Squires

As a film franchise, Friday the 13th is in serious limbo right now, with a pressing legal issue preventing any new films from being made. To make a long story short, Victor Miller, the original film’s scriptwriter, claims he wasn’t employed when he wrote the movie and thus is looking to terminate a grant of rights and reclaim ownership of the property. Essentially, Miller’s lawsuit leaves the future of the franchise hanging in the balance, and whether or not he wins the case will determine what happens with the series. For now, it lies dormant.

Sadly, while the legal issues hadn’t been an problem for Friday the 13th: The Game up to this point, that has changed. We’ve just learned that the game’s future is also now uncertain.

Here’s the full e-mail from Gun Media today…

Friday the 13th: The Game has established a loyal and excited fan base over the last year. As publisher/developer, Gun and Illfonic have made every effort to provide our fans with an authentic and great gaming experience.

As many in our community may be aware, a legal claim has been made which could affect all future Friday the 13th intellectual property. Although in the past the game has not been subject to any such claim, new content and material going forward will be affected. An initial decision in this case was expected in October 2017, but no decision has yet been issued. The court review of the legal rights is in process, but final resolution may take some time. Until the claim rights can be dismissed or resolved, no new content can be released.

When we originally learned that the game fell within the crosshairs of this legal dispute, we tried to balance the creation of new content requested by our fans against the maintenance and bug fixing that our community expects and deserves. We attempted to do both within the limits of the legal case.

We’ve now been forced to accept that the lawsuit makes future content for the game, including alternate play modes, new playable Jasons and Counselors, and new maps, unfeasible now or in the future. Although the listed content types will be affected, we remain committed to launching dedicated servers on our console platforms and providing the continued maintenance and bug fixing important to supporting our fan base.

So what does this mean exactly? There will be no additional content added to Friday the 13th: The Game. This includes “Uber Jason”, The Grendel Map, Jason Kill Packs, Clothing, Emotes and new Counselors.

It seems that literally all things Friday the 13th are in a holding pattern at this time, which is a major bummer. Whoever wins the case, it’s us fans who are losing right about now.

The good news? The team isn’t stopping…

never played this. maybe i should check it out.

Bethesda and developer Arkane Studios aren't done with Prey. Not by a long-shot. The pair just announced an intriguing set of downloadable content for the single-player 2017 sci-fi game, including a multiplayer mode and roguelike pack. The latter, Mooncrash, is out today and enemy encounters change every time you play. So is a free update that adds two new difficulty modes (one for folks who want to explore, and another for those who feel the game wasn't hard enough already). Mooncrash tasks you to take repeat runs through a lunar base, unlocking new characters, building on the original game's narrative.

Over on the official Facebook page for the private museum, Kirner recently announced that he’s essentially opening up its doors via a coffee table book.

This week, Kirner previewed some interior pages from the book, while also revealing that it’s headed to Amazon “probably around September” of this year.

We are proud to announce to publish a neat coffee table book containing the entire inventory with all new pics and never before seen details,” says Kirner. “The book serves as collectible, reverence and “close at hand” version of the museum. He adds, “We are looking at nearly 200 pages of props in never before seen detail.”

John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978) is a masterpiece of the horror genre, a taut, exceptionally crafted film featuring a terrifyingly unfathomable villain that’s still scary as hell 40 years later. That’s...a lot to live up to. The latest to attempt that daunting task is David Gordon Green, a director best…

'GTA: San Andreas' gets Xbox One backwards compatibility

this is the last gta i ever played. while i did enjoy my time with it, it also ruined all future gtas for me. i thought the formula couldn't be more stale at the time and they've released two more since then. its also, like, one of the top selling games of all time, though, so i'm obviously in the minority here.

If your Xbox copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is stashed away on a shelf somewhere, you might want to pull it out as you'll have some use for it again next week. Starting next Thursday, Rockstar Games is adding backwards compatibility for the game on Xbox One, as well as Midnight Club: Los Angeles and the slightly off-brand Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis.

Different Versions of Jason Kill Each Other in Artist’s Epic ‘Friday the 13th’ Self Destruction

by John Squires

Whenever we dream up horror icon mashup scenarios, we always imagine one villain doing battle with another, but have you ever wondered what would happen if, say, every different incarnation of Jason Voorhees came together for an epic battle… with each other?! No? I mean, that’s fine. But one artist did. And we like the way he thinks.

Artist JJ Harrison is the man behind this Friday the 13th “Self Destructs” piece, which pits Jason up against Jason up against Jason up against… you get the idea.

Third-Person Game ‘Crying is not Enough’ Trailer Reminiscent of ‘Alan Wake’

by Pat Torfe
Emahlstadt

"The game, which has just had its launch trailer released, has that Alan Wake feel, mixed with gameplay from The Evil Within. The story concerns 35 year-old Jacob Helten, whose wife Claire has disappeared following recovery from a car accident."

isn't that the same basic plot from both alan wake and the evil within, too? also see they found a way to insert the most-tired-ever horror game trope of bodies hanging in narrow corridors with a single, harsh point of light. goddamn, horror video games have sure gotten fucking stale.

Fancy a return of Alan Wake? While it’s unlikely that Remedy will be returning to the series for the near future, indie studio Storyline Team has something in the mix in the form of their Third-Person Action-Horror game, Crying is not Enough.

The game, which has just had its launch trailer released, has that Alan Wake feel, mixed with gameplay from The Evil Within. The story concerns 35 year-old Jacob Helten, whose wife Claire has disappeared following recovery from a car accident. The same night Claire disappears, a mysterious woman approaches Jacob, claiming that she knows where Claire is while offering her help to find Claire. From there she leads Jacob to a location straight out of a nightmare.

Look out for it June 8th on Steam, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports later this year.

Bethesda teases 'Fallout 76' ahead of E3 premiere

by Jon Fingas

After a not-so-subtle hint in a Twitch stream, it's official: there's a new Fallout game on the way. Bethesda has posted a teaser trailer for Fallout 76 ahead of its premiere at E3. You won't find many details about the gameplay itself, but there are hints that this might be a slightly different take on the post-apocalyptic world. For one, the game's namesake Vault 76 is important to Fallout lore -- it's one of the few "control" (baseline) vaults. The choice of music might also be a clue, as Bethesda ditched the usual '30s and '40s music for a cover of John Denver's "Country Roads." Is it set in West Virginia, then?
