El-P refused to give the NFL a Run The Jewels song, "because fuck them"

by William Hughes on News, shared by William Hughes to The A.V. Club
Emahlstadt

two things...

on one hand, i fucking love El-P. love his music, love his attitude, love this FU to the NFL, etc...

on the other hand, i'm honestly not mad at the NFL decision. it seems like a reasonable compromise that allows players to not participate in the anthem (which, for the record, i think kneeling during the anthem is a poor way to "protest" the... whatever people who kneel during the anthem are protesting), if they so choose. i get the "protest" is intended to be disruptive, but honestly its a poorly-executed, not-organized, distracting shit-show that is costing a business money and is not bringing helpful change. the NFL is not a government body and can enact whatever policy it wants (within the law) and there are a million ways (and a million more *effective* ways) to bring awareness and benefit a cause... whatever that cause may be.

kneeling players just come off as petulant children. it reminds me of the 99%-ers picketing on wall street... because reasons. eventually that went away and most people don't even remember what it was for/all about. this will soon see the same fate.

Neatly encapsulating a certain branch of public opinion surrounding the NFL—whose knee-hating commissioner, Roger Goodell, issued a statement yesterday ordering all players to either stand during the national anthem, or stay in the locker room until the song is over—at the moment, Run The Jewels’ El-P revealed on…

Dear Watchmen fans: Damon Lindelof is sorry (but also please watch his show)

by William Hughes on News, shared by William Hughes to The A.V. Club
Emahlstadt

i've long been a huge proponent of the writing on a/v club, but that first sentence is a fucking problem. '...still *the* sacred text for a certain breed of "comic books are art" fanatic' is a phrase that suggests that A) comics *aren't* actually art and B) those who suggest it is are some sort of misguided, fanatical misfit subgroup of people who like comics. comics are LITERAL art. every page is filled with art. sometimes there isn't even any words. its literally books full of art that some 100 years later is STILL trying to find validation as a form of art. jesus fucking christ.

It’s been almost a year since HBO cheerfully waded into the world of comic book sacrilege, announcing that it was working with The Leftovers’ Damon Lindelof on a TV adaptation of Alan Moore and David Gibbons’ Watchmen, still the sacred text for a certain breed of “comic books are art” fanatic. That’s enough time for…

‘Friday the 13th: The Game’ Celebrating Launch Anniversary with 130% XP Bonus

by John Squires

Believe it or not, we are approaching the one-year anniversary of the digital release of Gun Media and Illfonic’s excellent Friday the 13th: The Game, which debuted May 26, 2017. I don’t know about you, but a year later, you can still find me curling up on the couch and killing camp counselors. And I’m particularly excited for this coming Thursday, which will see the launch of Single Player Challenges and various other updates.

Also on May 24, the game will implement a 130% XP Bonus as well as Doubled Tape Drops, from 4pm Eastern on May 24th through 4pm Eastern on the 29th!

The XP bonus, in particular, should be taken advantage of, as new features, characters and versions of Jason can only be unlocked when your XP number is high. So whenever you’re given the opportunity to jack that number up quickly, don’t miss out!

Lionsgate Goes ‘Analog’ In Dystopian Future With ‘John Wick’ Director

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

literally just added this comic to my read list two weeks ago. its still a relatively new series AFAIK, maybe just wrapping up the first volume/arc in the next month or so. so, a little surprised to see it already picked up for a series, but at the rate comic books get adapted to tv and film these days, i guess i shouldn't be.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski and Ryan Condal, the creator of USA’s alien invasion show “Colony”, are teaming up to adapt sci-fi comic Analog, reports THR.

Analog is set in the near-future where the security of the Internet has been rendered useless thanks to an event referred to as the Great Doxxing. Out of those ashes, people turn to so-called Ledger Men, agents who carry sensitive secrets the old-fashioned way – with a briefcase handcuffed to one arm, and a gun held in the other. The first issue of the comic was released in April.

Lionsgate has won a bidding war to pick up the title, an Image Comic from writer Gerry Duggan and artist David O’Sullivan.  Condal will write the script while Stahelski will direct. 87eleven, the production banner run by Stahelski and fellow action maestro David Leitch, will produce. Duggan will share a story by credit with Condal.

Duggan is a former employee of L.A. comics shop Golden Apple that leapfrogged into writing comics. Among his credits was being the longtime co-scribe for Marvel Comics’ Deadpool titles, which landed him a reference in Deadpool 2. Condal worked on the script for Rampage, the recent Dwayne Johnson monster movie.

this "trailer" for a coloring book is stupid as fuck... but i'm actually super interested in the coloring book

Just when you thought it was safe to pack your colors away, creator Alan Robert returns with “The Beauty of Horror: Ultimate Nightmare, Deluxe Coloring Set”.

Get your claws around twelve oversized illustrations that you can color and frame from the bestselling horror series. Each 12” x 12” monster-sized print allows for an even more fun coloring experience with its large spaces and one-sided, deluxe coloring format. This GOREgeous print collection includes fan favorites from “The Beauty of Horror Volume One”, “Volume Two: Ghouliana’s Creepatorium”, “Volume Three: Haunted Playgrounds”, and features three, brand-new Alan Robert exclusives!

When asked about the thinking behind the title, the Life of Agony bassist explains, “’Beauty of Horror’ fans can finally decorate their walls with their GOREgeous artwork for the very first time, which also means they’ll be inviting Ghouliana into their homes.” Robert laughs, “So, don’t blame me when her hollowed eyes creep you out from across the room! Yeah, I’d say ‘Ultimate Nightmare’ is aptly named.”

“The Beauty of Horror: Ultimate Nightmare, Deluxe Coloring Set” by Alan Robert arrives in stores September 2018 from IDW Publishing.

Here’s an exclusive look at the trailer.

Want to See the Nightmarish Monster Bear from ‘Annihilation’ in All Its Glory?

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

christ

Between David Bruckner’s The Ritual and Alex Garland’s Annihilation, this year has already been an INCREDIBLE one for terrifying, wholly unique creature designs. The former film can be found on Netflix, while the latter film, a boldly original near-masterpiece for the sci-fi/horror genre, is available on Digital HD this week ahead of DVD/Blu-ray on May 29.

The majority of Annihilation is set inside “The Shimmer,” an alien-modified realm where nothing is quite as it is in our world. Essentially, the DNA of humans, animals and plants collides inside the shimmer, resulting in mutations that are sometimes beautiful and sometimes completely horrifying. You may, for example, stumble across a field of magical flowers that are from entirely different species but are somehow growing from the same plant, and the serenity may then be shattered by the arrival of A HUNGRY NIGHTMARE BEAR.

The most terrifying scene in Annihilation plays out similarly to the iconic “blood test” scene from John Carpenter’s The Thing, with most of the female leads strapped to chairs as their friend loses her mind and contemplates killing them. And then the aforementioned nightmare bear (nicknamed “Dexter” by the effects team) shows up, turning the terror up to eleven and brutally attacking one of the characters in a kill scene that reminds of the infamous bear attack in The Revenant. But this bear isn’t just any bear. In fact, it’s not entirely a “bear” at all.

Its design inspired by diseased animals, the bear creature in Annihilation is missing large portions of its fur, and a human skull has literally embedded itself into the animal’s head. Again, “The Shimmer” is a place where all kinds of DNA intermingle in simply impossible ways, and the bear seems to be literally absorbing the humans it kills. In addition to the human skull that has incorporated itself into the bear’s own skull, it also emits the death screams of its latest victims, and even has a row of human teeth inside of its mouth.

It’s not okay on any level. Not okay at all.

What we see of the creature in Annihilation is more than enough to send chills up the spine, but if you were hoping to see more of the incredible design, you’ll be happy to know that there’s an entire featurette devoted to the creature’s design and execution on the DVD/Blu-ray. And /Film just got their hands on an exclusive excerpt from that feaurette.

Check out the creature in all its glory below…

This Fan Made a Replica ‘Elm Street’ House for the Ultimate Horror Toy Display

by John Squires

Personally speaking, I’ve always argued that toys make for way cooler display pieces inside their original packaging rather than outside of it, but this particular diorama-style display piece for NECA’s various horror icon toys is making me question that stance.

Reader Ant O’Donnell just brought his awesome handiwork to our attention, showing off a custom-made replica of the iconic 1428 Elm Street house from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise that houses his Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser, Scream and Child’s Play figures, uniting all the big icons under one roof!

Ant told us, “I have recently completed a project for my NECA horror figures with a leaning more towards Freddy Krueger. It is the house inspired by the 3rd film but with 4 rooms and two stairway/hallways. There are just a few minor differences to the outside of the house for space and display reasons and I still have to add doll house lighting.”

Now this is how you display your love for horror in your home!

Miramar is coming to PUBG Xbox One next week, one final test now live

by Sherif Saed

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds players on Xbox One won’t have too long of a wait to be able to play the final version of Miramar on their console.

PUBG Corp. has announced during last night’s Xbox stream that Miramar, the game’s desert map, will roll out for all on Xbox One on Thursday, May 24.

But before May 24, PUBG Corp. is giving all players one last chance to check out the map on the game’s test servers. Anyone who owns the main game can download the PUBG Test Server from the store starting today.

From there it’s just a matter of launching the game and playing.

Alongside the launch, PUBG will also receive a patch that should improve the game’s performance on Xbox One. Details are slim at the moment, but we’ll be sure to bring you all the patch notes as soon as they’re announced.

Image Comics Had Seven Different Artists Color a Black & White Todd McFarlane ‘Spawn’ Drawing

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

don't give a fuck about todd mcfarlane or spawn, but this is a cool little study on colorists in comics.

While we wait for more news on Blumhouse’s Spawn feature film, creator Todd McFarlane is finishing up issue #286 of the Image Comics series, which is going to printers today. For this one, Image did something pretty awesome, enlisting seven different artists to interpret a cover McFarlane drew for issue #286, in their own personal style.

The result? Seven vastly different pieces of art… which all began as the same piece.

McFarlane wrote on Facebook, “Here’s the list of AWESOME people who lent their coloring skills to Spawn issue 286 this month (in order of the covers below):

  • Jean-Francois Beaulieu
  • Nikos Koutsis
  • Moreno Dinisio
  • Frank Martin
  • Matthew Wilson
  • Owen Gieni
  • Annalisa Leoni

Pretty wild to see how much color can completely change the entire feel of a drawing…

Elisabeth Shue Becomes One of Amazon’s “The Boys”

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

orly...

Elisabeth Shue, best known for her roles in Karate Kid, Cocktail, Adventures In Babysitting, Hollow Man, Piranha 3D, and Death Wish, is set as a series regular in Amazon’s straight-to-series drama “The Boys”, from “Supernatural” creator and “Timeless” co-creator Eric Kripke, “Preacher‘s” Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen and Sony Pictures TV, reports Deadline.

The site confirms that Rogen and Goldberg will be directing the pilot, written by Kripke based on the comic book by Garth Ennis (“Preacher”) and Darick Robertson.

“The Boys” is set in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame. It revolves around a group of vigilantes known informally as “the boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

Shue will play Madelyn Stillwell. Corporate and formidable Madelyn is the Vice President of Hero Management for Vought, in charge of the public persona as well as the assignments of the Superheroes. Madelyn is a tough negotiator who rides roughshod over public relations dilemmas, such as when Superhero A-Train accidentally kills an innocent bystander and damage control needs to be done at any price, or when a city Mayor requests a Superhero for his own beleaguered town.

‘The House That Jack Built’s Lars von Trier Unsure If Audience Hated the Film Enough

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

shut up lars von trier, you fucking hack

Love or hate Lars von Trier, you have to admire his ability to take criticism. One of the worst traits in some filmmakers is their inability to learn from their mistakes and grow as an artist. Earlier this week, von Trier’s The House That Jack Built became the talk of Cannes as hundreds of people walked out of the film, pointing to brutal sequences involving child mutilation. Without having seen the film, it all looked and sounded to me as if von Trier forced his critics into a challenge, one in which they unknowingly lost by exiting the theater. In fact, it sounds as if he was hoping for an even harsher critique, and that its newfound hype isn’t what he was hoping for.

“[The walkouts and audible groans] made me very relaxed,” von Trier told Cineuropa. “It’s quite important not to be loved by everybody, because then you’ve failed. I’m not sure if they hated it enough, though. If it gets too popular, I’ll have a problem.

“But the reception seemed just about right, I think,” added von Trier. “In any case, this one was a pleasure to write. I don’t know too much about serial killers, but I do know a bit about psychopaths. And I’ve never killed anyone myself… If I do, it will probably be a journalist.”

I love how he continues to poke and prod us journalists, which will incite some into a furious rage (once again, giving von Trier victory over them). It’s true that von Trier is just as pretentious as anyone who would watch a movie in a tuxedo, but it’s hard to not align with his thinking. He’s an artist and his works have a personal agenda. With The House That Jack Built, which IFC Films will release here in the States later this year, it sounds as if he’s kicking dirt in the direction of critics. The irony here is that he’s put himself in a win-win position. If a critic enjoys the film, he wins. If they hate it, well, he’s fine with the criticism, and also got exactly what he wanted – a rise out of the writer. For us standing on the sidelines, this is just something super fun to write about. Watch for release news as it comes in.

Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Bruno Ganz (Downfall), and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) also star with South Korean actor, Yu Ji-tae, best known to us genre fans as the antagonist in Park Chan-wook’s 2003 hardboiled thriller Oldboy.

The House That Jack Built takes place in 1970s USA. We follow the highly intelligent Jack through 5 incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is – contrary to all logic – set on taking greater and greater chances. Along the way we experience Jack’s descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge – a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of, for Jack, dangerous and difficult maneuvers.”

Artist Mashes Xenomorph with the Venom Symbiote to Create the Coolest Monster Ever

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

i still think the coolest monster ever might be the creature from the netflix original movie 'the ritual'

So Life wasn’t a Venom prequel, but what if Alien and Venom collided?!

A Xenomorph can be created from any host body and the same is true of the Venom symbiote, which only needs to attach itself to a host in order to become a nightmare monster. So, uh, like, what if the symbiote attached itself to the fully grown Xenomorph? Or, taking a bit of a different approach, what if a FaceHugger impregnated Venom?!

These are wacky scenarios that are fun to imagine as a fan, and Raph Lomotan has gone one step further by actually drawing up the world’s first… VenoMorph?!

Lomotan’s incredible VenoMorph design is a true hybrid of Venom and the Alien franchise’s Xenomorph, and it’s just about as badass as you’d expect it to be. Below we’re also sharing a past Lomotan mash-up, which he calls the Indominus Neomorph!

yes, plz

In the wake of the teaser being leaked and then officially revealed by Bethesda, the full gameplay trailer for Rage 2 has arrived this morning, the follow-up to 2011’s Rage.

The sequel, arriving Spring 2019, takes an open world approach to a Mad Max-style post apocalypse, where laws are out the window and chaos rules the world…

“In RAGE 2, you’ll dive headfirst into a dystopian world devoid of society, law, and order. You can go anywhere, shoot anything, and explode everything. The game brings together two studio powerhouses – Avalanche Studios, masters of open world mayhem and id Software, gods of the first-person shooter – to deliver a carnival of carnage.

In the year 2185, humanity’s numbers are dwindling. Ruthless and bloodthirsty gangs roam the open roads and the tyrannical Authority seek to rule who remains with an iron fist. You are Walker, the last Ranger of the wasteland. Robbed of your home and left for dead, you’ll tear across an unforgiving wasteland battling bloodthirsty gangs to find the tools and tech needed to take the fight to The Authority and crush their oppressive rule once and for all!”

[Video] Syfy Heads Back to the ’80s for First Look at “Deadly Class”

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

i read the first two or three volumes of the comic and its pretty damn good -- rick remender is one of the better writers in comics these days, for sure. holding out hope for the show and hoping it doesnt fall into the 'I GET THAT REFERENCE!' nostalgia trap like stranger things. hoping tastemakers in this country can get to a point where we can set fictional stories in the 80s w/o the 80s nostalgia being the main course.

“One of the more twisted coming-of-age stories…”

From executive producers the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Infinity War) comes “Deadly Class, Syfy’s upcoming small screen adaptation of Rick Remender’s graphic novel. The series is set to premiere in 2019, and we’ve got your first look today.

“Set in a dark, comic book world against the backdrop of late 80s counter culture, DEADLY CLASS follows a homeless teen recruited into a storied elite private school where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital.

Based on the best-selling 2014 Image Comics graphic novel, DEADLY CLASS is a coming of age journey full of ancient mystery and teen angst.”

Cast includes Benedict Wong (“Doctor Strange,” “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams”), Benjamin Wadsworth (“Teen Wolf”), Lana Condor (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Alita: Battle Angel”), Maria Gabriela de Faria (“Yo Soy Franky,” “Sitiados”), Luke Tennie (“Shock and Awe”), Liam James (“The Way Way Back,” “The Killing”) and Michel Duval (“Señora Acero,” “Queen of the South”).

From Sony Pictures Television and Universal Cable Productions, “Deadly Class” was adapted for television by Rick Remender and Miles Orion Feldsott, who will serve as executive producers alongside Joe Russo (“Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain America: Civil War”), Anthony Russo (“Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain America: Civil War”) and Mike Larocca (“Spy”). Adam Targum (“Banshee”) from Chipmunk Hill also served as executive producer on the pilot, along with Lee Toland Krieger (“The Age of Adaline”), who also directed.

Bethesda announces ‘Rage 2’ with a hype teaser

the first rage was a great and underrated gem. glad they've decided to revisit the franchise.

Rumors of a sequel to id Software's 2011 post-apocalyptic shooter Rage have been swimming around for years. Lo and behold, the title's publisher Bethesda released a hype trailer confirming its existence, with the promise to upload a gameplay video tomorrow.

Mike Tyson Punches Everything and Takes On Steven Seagal In ‘China Salesman’

by Chris Coffel
Emahlstadt

i don't even know what to say

The world we currently live in isn’t the best. There are plenty of issues and conflicts and it’s just a struggle in general for many of us to get by. When we, as a society, encounter these dire times we need something to lift our spirits and let us know that in the end, it will all be ok. We need a hero to show us the light. Today that hero is China Salesman.

I know what you’re thinking. “China Sal…what is China Salesman?” Oh, it’s just this movie where Mike Tyson punches everything and everyone including Steven Seagal! Oh, you don’t believe me? Then watch the trailer, but make sure you keep watching because once you think it’s over a new, different trailer for the movie plays and then you have to keep watching still because once that second trailer finishes it goes straight into a third trailer! That’s right, the trailer for China Salesman is really three trailers in one!

See, I told you, Mike Tyson punches everything. Also, how about those line readings? Incredible, I know.

As it turns out, the movie does have plot beyond punching. In what is apparently a true story, China Salesman is about a Chinese salesman that comes face-to-face with a corrupt competitor over the contract for the first African mobile telecom technology. Tyson and Seagal somehow get caught up in the mix and a brutal civil war breaks out. It all sounds very amazing.

China Salesman will be in limited theaters on June 15th. I don’t know where it is playing, but if it is playing by you I implore you to go and see it. For those that can’t catch it in theaters, fear not. The film will hit VOD, Blu-ray and DVD on June 26th. You can actually pre-order a copy now from the MVD Shop or Amazon.

The Onrush open beta is live all weekend on PS4, Xbox One

by Sherif Saed
Emahlstadt

a new "realistic" mario kart style game, apparently. doesn't look as good as blur was, but my interest is piqued.

The open beta for Onrush, the next racing game from former Evolution Studios developers, has kicked off.

The Onrush open beta went live yesterday afternoon right on schedule, and it’ll be online for the entire weekend on PS4, and Xbox One.

Anyone can download it from the store. Go here for PS4, and here for Xbox One. You have until Monday, May 21 at 2am PT, 5am ET, 10am BST to play it.

The Onrush beta comes with a decent chunk of content. Outside of a tutorial mode to teach you the basics, you’ll also find Superstar Practice – a PvE environment where you can play to your heart’s content. This mode also supports co-op.

Overdrive, and Countdown are both going to be available in the beta. The two modes will be playable on two of the game’s maps, and you can expect different weather conditions and time of day changes to shake things up.

You’ll be picking from four vehicle classes. The Blade, Vortex, Interceptor, and Titan. Even the game’s photo mode is included in the beta, though you’ll only be able to use it when playing solo.

The Onrush beta also comes with a progression system. The more you climb up the levels, the more content you’ll unlock in the main game.

Onrush launches June 5 for PS4, and Xbox One. A PC version is planned for release sometime later. If you’re not sure what Onrush is, maybe some raw gameplay footage will help with that.

The post The Onrush open beta is live all weekend on PS4, Xbox One appeared first on VG247.

i watched the original suspiria once about a year or two ago. only half paid attention to it at the time and don't really remember much about it. so, i went back to watch it again recently in anticipation of the remake coming this year and its fucking impossible to stream this movie. i would have to buy, like, a dvd or some caveman-ass bullshit to watch it, which is obviously not going to happen. so, for the first time in probably 5+ years i'm actually considering torrenting a fucking movie. where do you even do that these days?

Thanks in large part to the incredible response out of CinemaCon last month, where the gruesome first footage was shown off, director Luca Guadagnino‘s new take on Dario Argento’s Suspiria is currently one of the mostly hotly-anticipated horror movies, with countless horror fans on Twitter *begging* the official account to release the footage.

We don’t have it yet, but Variety does report this week that Suspiria, which hails from Amazon Studios, Videa and Guadagnino’s Frenesy Films, will be getting a Fall 2018 theatrical release in Italy courtesy of Videa. As we recently learned, Amazon will be also be releasing Suspiria theatrically here in the States this coming Fall.

The site notes, “The Suspiria redo, which is completing post, is tipped for a launch from the Venice Film Festival in September. Amazon will be allowed to put it on its Amazon Prime platform in Italy after a five-month window.”

In Suspiria, “A young American ballet dancer travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is something far more sinister and supernatural. She becomes increasingly terrified after a series of gruesome murders ensue and she slowly unravels the dark history of the academy.

The cast includes Dakota JohnsonChloe Grace-Moretz, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Sylvie Testud, Angela Winkler, Małgosia Bela and Lutz Ebersdorf.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke composed the score.

David Kajganich wrote the film, co-financed by Amazon Studios and K Period Media.
