Longhorns land pledge from 4-star SDE Princely Umanmielen
Emahlstadtnow things are starting to look like they should for a UT recruiting class.
Yet another key target on Texas’ big board is now committed to the Longhorns.
The Texas Longhorns won’t have to wait until mid-October to learn the decision of coveted edge rusher Princely Umanmielen.
On Monday, the local Manor star brought his recruitment to an unexpected close, announcing his commitment to Tom Herman’s program over options including Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU, and Oregon.

— Thehitman (@d1princely) August 12, 2019
Umanmielen originally aimed to extend his recruitment a bit longer with a planned commitment date of Oct. 15. Even by that timeline, there there was reason for optimism in Austin prior to his unexpected pledge, though Umanmielen’s recruitment was a bit of a toss up and sticking to his original commitment date would have afforded Texas A&M the opportunity to have the final say during an Oct. 11 official visit.
Nevertheless, earlier this spring, following one of Umanmielen’s multiple offseason visits to the Forty Acres, Tom Herman told the local product that “he’ll be damned if he let a kid from Austin go to any other school in the nation,” and the staff has put forth the effort to support that statement, recruiting Umanmielen since his freshman year.

— Thehitman (@d1princely) August 12, 2019
On Monday, albeit a couple months sooner than anticipated, Herman made true on that promise, and Texas’ 2020 class now adds yet another priority prospect to the fold.
247Sports Gabe Brooks detailed what Umanmielen brings to the table, noting his ultimate upside as that of a third-day NFL Draft selection:
“Taller, longer-framed defensive lineman with outstanding frame potential. Ample space to add good mass. Fully scheme versatile with experience inside and outside. Frame suggests he could outgrow traditional SDE designation. Plays with consistent effort and a high motor. Long arms allow for encouraging disengaging potential. Active against the run. Flashes impressive lateral quickness relative to size and position. Good athlete with a verified 5.10 40 and terrific 4.41 shuttle. Does not give up on plays and rallies to the ball with pursuit vigor. Height can at times create pad level/leverage issues. Get-off quickness consistency can improve. Will need added play strength to maximize power in the phone booth. Can expand pass-rush repertoire. High-intensity, versatile defensive lineman with great functionality in multiple fronts.”
As a junior, Umanmielen utilized this skill set to amass 45 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
A 6’4, 249-pound talent, Umanmielen is currently ranked as the nation’s No. 230 player overall and as the No. 11 strong-side defensive end, per the 247Sports Composite.
Umanmielen is now commit No. 15 for a class that headlines the Big 12 and is comfortably positioned within the top 10 nationally at No. 6 overall.

Walmart ditches advertising for violent games, but guns are still in stock
Emahlstadtmakes me wanna barf
Finally, children won’t have to look at bloody or brutal games on the way to picking up their assault rifles. Thank god. We’re safe.
Last Saturday, a man opened fire on Walmart customers in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and wounding 24 others. Hours later, another gunman killed 9 more in Dayton, Ohio. As has become frustratingly the norm in these occurrences, the finger of blame hasn’t been pointed at, say, the mass proliferation of guns in the country, or (in El Paso’s case particularly) the rise in hostile anti-immigration sentiment.
Not at all. Following the tragedies, President Trump placed the blame on mental illness and “gruesome and grisly video games”.
It looks like Walmart caught the memo.
Freelance writer Kenneth Shepard has been circulating literature internally released by Walmart. The letter, “Immediate Action: Remove Signing and Displays Referencing Violence,” instructs employees to take down displays showing violent movies, hunting videos and footage of violent video games.
Apparently Walmart is telling its employees to take down displays that show violent video games, specifically shooters, as well as movies and hunting videos. pic.twitter.com/2N3t4B86tf
— Kenneth Shepard (@shepardcdr) August 7, 2019
It also instructs staff to take down demo console units, noting Xbox and PS4 stands as those more likely to be offering violent play. It’s unclear how many stores are affected. However, an anonymous source told Vice that this is indeed official literature being distributed by the retailer.
“I immediately threw it away because it’s obviously a way to shift the blame from the real problem regarding the mass shootings. I didn’t get to confirm this yesterday but they aren’t doing anything about the sales of guns and ammo in the store.”
USA Today was able to confirm that (predictably) the store’s gun sale policy has not changed. Of course.
The games industry has its own problems with guns and violence. Publishers often fund arms manufacturers through licenses after all. But it’s hard to see a move to erase all mention of violence from a store – without withdrawing the sale of weapons themselves – as anything but an attempt to wash over the tragedy.
Guns are fine, says Walmart. Just don’t think about what they do.

Texas HC Tom Herman details top priorities for preseason camp
Emahlstadtman, that's some good kool-aid
The biggest focus is on how the defense can replace eight starters from 2018.
Preason camp is officially underway, and though only one practice has been completed, Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman already has check list of priorities for his program to address ahead of the 2019 campaign.
Unsurprisingly, filling the voids Kris Boyd and Davante Davis left behind at cornerback was the first priority Herman noted when addressing the media on Friday.
“We’ve got to find two starting corners that are trustworthy,” Herman said.
How well they perform in those roles throughout fall practice remains to be seen, but there’s every reason to believe that the best Texas options to that end are true sophomores Anthony Cook and Jalen Green.
A naturally confident talent with a reputation as a technician, Cook’s skill set seemingly makes him an ideal candidate to replace Boyd as the boundary corner. Despite missing time this spring with a hamstring injury, Cook still appears to be the far-and-away favorite to secure one of the two starting roles Herman is seeking to address.
Green, on the other hand, was good to go throughout the spring, and he made the absolute most of the opportunity. After unseating redshirt sophomore Kobe Boyce to assume duties as the first-team field corner, Green put forth a praiseworthy performance during the spring game. All told during that showing, the Texas quarterbacks targeted Green nine times, and of those nine attempts, only three connected, netting a mere 10 yards.
“We’ve challenged Jalen to get more physical,” Herman said after the Orange-White scrimmage. “He’s a big, long guy that’s got excellent ability. Really, really athletic. That’s something he needs to continue to do. I think he’s taken that to heart. I think he really wants to improve that part of his game, and you saw a little bit of that tonight.”
Long before Green’s spring emergence and Cook essentially solidifying himself as the man to beat at boundary corner, the lone senior in the secondary, safety Brandon Jones, projected that those two would become the Longhorns breakout defenders in 2019.
Herman can only wait, watch, and see whether Jones is correct in that projection — at Big 12 Media Days, he did push back on the assumption that Cook and Green are the frontrunners there.
The secondary is far from the only position group replacing multiple starters, though.
The same is true for both the defensive line and the linebacking corps, so when collectively considered with the secondary, Texas is tasked with replacing eight starters from a unit that ranked 44th in S&P+ in 2018.
The priority to that end?
“Find a way to get best 11 guys on defense out there in different personnel packages,” Herman said.
Given that the most glaring area to address is at linebacker, where the Longhorns are looking to replace Gary Johnson and Anthony Wheeler, one plausible resolution is replacing a linebacker with one of the numerous physical safeties, as Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando noted at the Texas High School Coaches Convention, per Inside Texas’ Joe Cook.
“We have a whole bunch of dynamic playmakers,” Orlando said. “If this guy at linebacker isn’t as good as this guy at safety, and the guy at safety is one of our better 11 guys, I better and we better do a better job of creating something that has that guy on the field.”
Hard-hitting sophomore DeMarvion Overshown, who was regarded as one of the most imposing tacklers in the 2018 class, certainly appears to be an ideal option there given his competency in coverage, as well as junior Chris Brown, who made two starts in 14 appearances in 2018.
On the other side of the ball, Herman noted the need for Texas to utilize its running backs better, and for obvious reasons.
“We’ve got to make a greater emphasis on running with football with our tailbacks; designing runs that they’re suited for and understanding their skill set,” Herman said. “And then, to take some of those hits off of Sam, we’ve kind of beefed up our [run-pass option] game. So instead of a run-run option, it’s a run-pass option.”
Though Texas largely entrusting Ehlinger with its ground game worked wonders in 2018 as he tallied nearly 500 yards and 16 touchdowns, those marks required 164 carries to reach. For further perspective on just how significant that workload was, Ehlinger’s 164 rush attempts were 22 more than Keaontay Ingram received, and across the entire country, only 10 quarterbacks carried the ball more often.
Of course, it should certainly help that Ingram enters his sophomore season healthy and with considerably high expectations following various flashes throughout his freshman campaign, and his projected backup, true freshman Jordan Whittington, has received nothing short of rave reviews since arriving last winter as an early enrollee.
The other aspect of Herman’s wishes is the increased emphasis placed on RPOs, an approach that Ehlinger likes.
“It’s been awesome,” Ehlinger said during Big 12 Media Days of Texas installing more RPOs into the offense. “I love it because it’s going to be hard for teams to try to take away the run without adding guys in [to the box] because of how physical we are going to be up front and the skill we’re going to have at the running back position without having guys who are runnings 4.5s cutting behind them.”
Defending those RPOs will be more difficult this season, too, and not just because of any projected improvement for the offense as whole — Ehlinger revealed some of the technical changes that will power the run-pass option game in 2019.
“It’s a little bit different,” he said. “Now instead of reading the back side, we’re reading the front side, or maybe we’re reading both sides. It’s more of a full-field type deal and it really puts defenses in a bind.”
Want to produce more explosive plays? Stressing defenses by optioning off defenders without forcing Ehlinger to run the football sounds like a good plan. Especially with the talent that now surroundings the Texas junior at the skill positions.
At least on the surface, Texas enters preseason camp with some semblance of an answer for each area Herman is aiming to address.
Expected learning curves aside, optimism regarding the upside of Cook and Green at cornerback seems justified, while others such as Boyce, sophomore D’Shawn Jamison, and even true freshman Kenyatta Watson II could provide some intriguing competition at the position.
On paper — and even on film in Ingram’s case — a backfield featuring Ingram and Whittington should boast as much explosive potential as any Herman and his staff have had in Austin. And as far as the RPOs are concerned, it’s fairly safe to assume that Ehlinger, now a junior leader and an elite talent nationally, will ensure that the offense as a whole operates as Herman and offensive coordinator Tim Beck intend.

No. 3 RB Bijan Robinson announces commitment to Texas
Emahlstadtwoooooo!!!!!
A late momentum change has allowed the Longhorns to land their most prolific running back prospect in several years.
Tom Herman’s 2020 class now features a new headliner.
To cap what can be described as nothing short of a seismic shift in his recruitment throughout the previous several days, Tucson (Az.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson brought his recruitment to a close on Friday and announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Instagram.
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Bijan Robinson (@bijan_robinson) on
Ohio State, USC, and UCLA were each options, as well.
A five-star talent, Robinson’s decision is especially notable given that at this time last week, it was widely expected that the Longhorns would finish on the outside looking in.
Despite reportedly naming the Longhorns as his leader in an Instagram Live segment on June 12, momentum quickly changed hands just days later following Robinson’s June 14 official visit to Ohio State. Robinson did officially tour Texas the following weekend for the Heat Wave pool party, but as the days passed, an influx of Crystal Ball picks flooded in favoring the Buckeyes. Various murmurs even surfaced in July hinting that Robinson had silently committed to Ohio State.
Expectations that Robinson was Columbus-bound remained intact throughout the next several weeks — that was, at least, until commitment week.
On Sunday morning, news suddenly surfaced suggesting that not only was Ohio State no longer in line for his pledge, but the Buckeyes abruptly became an afterthought and were all but written off entering the final days of his recruitment, as noted by Taylor Lehman of Eleven Warriors.
“[The Ohio State staff] were informed that the Buckeyes, who were written in ink as the favorite to land Robinson’s commitment since his visit in June, are now no longer the favorite and have only a small chance to earn his commitment.”
In the almost immediate aftermath of this news, the coming hours and days saw virtually every bit of momentum that the Buckeyes so comfortably enjoyed as of Saturday evening alter entirely in favor of Texas, potentially with the help of the dead period being in the rearview. Some minor USC chatter did surface at the front end of the week, and understandably so as Robinson has family in the area and officially visited the Trojans weeks ago, but those rumblings faded almost immediately. So much so, in fact, that by as early as Tuesday morning, the national expectation was that Robinson would be a Longhorn.
Those expectations and the multitude of Crystal Ball picks that poured in as of late have now proven correct. As a result, Robinson provides the Horns with their first five-star running back since the Mack Brown era when Johnathan Gray joined Texas’ 2012 class.
Robinson’s film reveals that he’s every bit worth his ranking as the nation’s No. 3 running back prospect, per the 247Sports Composite.
Robinson stands at a solid 6’0, 200 pounds, but his rushing style features far more finesse than his size may indicate. Robinson boasts excellent vision and tremendous burst around the line of scrimmage, and once he crosses into the second level, his lateral quickness and elusiveness is nothing short of an elite level. Such is largely why more times than not, Robinson makes multiple defenders miss en route to explosive runs.
When translated to the stat sheet, Robinson’s 170 rushes last season netted 35 scores and 2,400 yards, which was good for 14.1 yards per carry.
Now the top-ranked talent in Texas’ 2020 class at No. 20 nationally, Robinson’s addition lifts the class to No. 13 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12.

Texas close to full health as preseason camp begins
Emahlstadtstay healthy, boys!
Defensive end Rob Cummins has suffered a setback with his surgically repaired knee.
AUSTIN, Texas — On Friday, the Texas Longhorns kicked off preseason camp with a practice in helmets and shorts at Whitaker Sports Complex with a team close to full health.
Following practice, head coach Tom Herman revealed that sophomore defensive end Rob Cummins suffered a new injury in his previously surgically repaired knee that required arthroscopic surgery this week. Cummins will go through the rehabilitation process before making a decision about his football future, Herman said. The last comment from Herman was notable, as Cummins missed all of the 2018 season with an injury in the same knee and hasn’t yet seen the field at Texas.
The only other injury update provided by Herman regarded redshirt freshman wide receiver Al’Vonte Woodard, who fractured his left foot in early June and underwent surgery. Woodard got out of his boot on Friday and is “progressing nicely,” accoding to Herman. He’s expected back at the end of preseason camp or following the season opener.
Other than that, the Longhorns are in good shape heading into preseason camp. Now the challenge is to keep the team healthy once the pads come on and the hitting commences.

Rebecca Romijn stars as Danica, the leader of a cult with Arden Myrin appearing as cultist Gypsy, Danica’s right-hand woman.
In the film…
“Times are tough for Sam. Already a cancer survivor at twenty-two, she eeks out a meager existence delivering pizza for minimum wage—and minimum tips—while dealing with an exploitative boss and obnoxious coworkers. When the final delivery of the night promises to take her to a wealthy neighborhood with the chance of a healthy tip, she takes the opportunity to make up for an unprofitable shift. What begins as a quest for cash ends up as a quest for survival, though, when it turns out her customers aren’t who she’s used to delivering to. Texas WR target Johnny Wilson commits to Oregon
Emahlstadtthat's a terrible hat.
The Longhorns still don’t have a wide receiver pledge in the 2020 recruiting class.
Position coaches Drew Mehringer and Corby Meekins continue to struggle to land wide receivers in the 2020 recruiting class for the Texas Longhorns, with the latest blow coming on Monday as Calabasas (Cali.) standout Johnny Wilson committed to the Oregon

As a longtime Ducks fans, Oregon was able to close with the 6’6, 224-pounder visited Eugene over the weekend for the Saturday Night Live camp and the coaching staff was able to close with him in the hours after that trip.
While the decision isn’t particularly surprising — Oregon held all seven 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Wilson — it is disappointing because the Texas staff had some success selling the big wide receiver on becoming the next Collin Johnson.
And the Longhorns appeared to be in a strong position last month when Wilson took two visits to Austin, eventually extending his trip for the Heat Wave event all the way through the week.
Unfortunately, those visits weren’t enough to lure Wilson away from the West Coast, so there’s now more pressure on Mehringer and Meekins to close with prospects like Temple’s Quentin Johnson, Oklahoma product Javian Hester, and another Californian, LV Bunkley-Shelton, who visited Austin over the weekend.
With the miss on Wilson, it will also be more difficult for the Longhorns to compile a 2020 class as highly ranked as the last two groups — Texas should be able to crack the top 10 once the cycle is complete, but reaching the top five doesn’t look likely at this time.

Longhorns offer 5-star Florida WR Agiye Hall
Emahlstadtthis dude looks 29 years old.
The nation’s No. 2 wide receiver prospect now has a Texas offer in hand.
One of the nation’s very best 2021 wide receiver prospects can now officially be added to the Texas Longhorns big board.
On Monday, despite mutual between the two sides for some time, five-star Seffner (Fla.) Armwood wide receiver Agiye Hall finally added an offer from Tom Herman’s program, he announced on Twitter.
Very Thankful And Honored To Receive An Offer From The University Of Texas!!!! #HookEm #ThisIsTexas #Longhorns @TexasFootball @BCarringtonUT @polynesiabowl @DemetricDWarren @AllAmericaGame pic.twitter.com/thBoobS9og
— ⁶ (@HallAgiye) July 29, 2019
The news comes nearly one full month after Hall included the Longhorns in his top 12 list, alongside programs including Clemson Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and USC.
So why was Texas a top option, even before presenting an offer? The answer is simple: How the Horns utilize receivers in their offense.
“I like their offense. I like the program,” Hall expressed to BON last month. “They’re very successful with wideouts.”
A 6’3, 190-pound talent, Hall is aiming to build upon a sophomore season in which he snagged 47 receptions for 878 yards and 10 touchdowns. Along the way, he’s cemented himself as one of the truly elite receivers in his class, coming in at No. 16 nationally and No. 2 at his position, per the 247Sports Composite.
Hall’s only two Crystal Ball picks to date favor Clemson.
Ohio State no longer the favorite for 5-star RB Bijan Robinson
Emahlstadtwe need a good RB recruit after we just lost homeboy to the dawgs.
The Arizona product is expected to make his decision this week and the Longhorns may once again be the favorite.
A seismic shift in the high-profile recruitment of Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson occurred over the weekend, as Bill Kurelic of 247Sports reported on Sunday morning that the Ohio State Buckeyes staff was informed that Robinson is no longer favoring the Buckeyes.
“Bijan Robinson was planning to be a Buckeye,” Kurelic said on the Bucknuts Morning Five podcast. “There’s not a whole lot of question about that... but this is recruiting and things change in recruiting.”
So head coach Ryan Day and his staff only have a “small chance” of Robinson committing to the Buckeyes when he makes his decision on Friday via Instagram, even though Ohio State was the runaway favorite for the consensus five-star running back since he visited Columbus in June.
The news is all the more surprising because it looked as if Robinson was set to play college football with his high school teammate Lathan Ransom, a talented safety who considered Texas before committing to Ohio State two weeks ago.
Now it looks as if the Longhorns are the favorite in the final hours before Robinson announces, a position that Texas was in before the visit to Columbus represented the last major shift in his recruitment.
The second visit to Austin for the 6’0, 200-pounder coincided with Robinson reportedly naming Texas his leader during an Instragram Live video back in June.
Given the deep ties of offensive coordinator Tim Beck to the state of Arizona, it would be somewhat surprising if another school can beat out the Longhorns, though Robinson did take an official visit to Los Angeles to see the Trojans between his trips to Columbus and Austin.
So if Robinson doesn’t pick Texas on Friday, USC is the other contender — and a serious one at that, according to some people with whom Kurelic spoke — but at this point, it appears that the Longhorns have a tremendous opportunity to close with Robinson and allow running backs coach Stan Drayton to re-write the narrative about his recruiting ability.
At least until the pressure mounts for the Horns to land a running back or two in the 2021 class.
The caveat is that while there are some 247Sports Crystal Ball picks for Robinson to Texas now, there are also a handful of foggy picks, indicating that it’s still far from clear where he ends up. It’s just not likely to be Ohio State, the overwhelming favorite before the shocking swing over the weekend.

Emahlstadti don't even know what david cronenberg's crash is or is all about. but i definitely want to see the 4K restored, NC-17 version of it. like, soon.
We learned earlier this summer that David Cronenberg‘s Crash is finally getting a Blu-ray release (over in Germany), and today brings word that the NC-17 version of the controversial erotic thriller has been restored in 4K by Recorded Picture Company and Turbine Media Group.
The news comes courtesy of The Playlist, and they note that both Cronenberg and director of photography Peter Suschitzky supervised the restoration from the original negative.
This brand new restoration will screen at the Venice Film Festival this year, “and will then look for worldwide distribution afterward.”
