Bowl-Shaped Naphthalimide-Annulated Corannulene as Nonfullerene Acceptor in Organic Solar Cells

by Menekse, Kaan

Organic Materials 2020; 02: 229-234
DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1714283

An electron-poor bowl-shaped naphthalimide-annulated corannulene with branched alkyl residues in the imide position was synthesized by a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling annulation sequence. This dipolar compound exhibits strong absorption in the visible range along with a low-lying LUMO level at –3.85 eV, enabling n-type charge transport in organic thin-film transistors. Furthermore, we processed inverted bulk-heterojunction solar cells in combination with the two donor polymers PCE–10 and PM6 to achieve open-circuit voltages up to 1.04 V. By using a blend of the self-assembled naphthalimide-annulated corannulene and PCE–10, we were able to obtain a power conversion efficiency of up to 2.1%, which is to the best of our knowledge the highest reported value for a corannulene-based organic solar cell to date.

An 80-Carbon Aromatic Saddle Enabled by a Naphthalene-Directed Scholl Reaction

by Pun, Sai Ho

Organic Materials 2022;
DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1716499

Synthesis of an unprecedented aromatic saddle consisting of 80 sp2 carbons is enabled by including naphthylene groups in the substrate of the Scholl reaction. The negatively curved polycyclic framework of this aromatic saddle is revealed by the single crystal X-ray crystallography, and its stereodynamics are studied with density functional theory calculations.

A Theoretical Study on the Macrocyclic Strain of Zigzag Molecular Belts

by Shi, Tan-Hao

Organic Materials 2020; 02: 300-305
DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1718934

Zigzag molecular belts have captured the imagination of scientists for over a half century because of their aesthetically appealing structures and tantalizing properties. One of the formidable challenges in synthesis is to circumvent the energy accumulated in the construction of strained structures. Reported herein is our theoretical study to quantify the molecular strain energies. A general exponential function equation E strain = a·n·e −n/b was obtained to estimate strain energies of both conjugated and partially hydrogenated hydrocarbon belts and their heteroatom-embedded analogs. The deformation of aromatic rings from planarity was revealed to contribute dominantly to the high strain energies. The method enabled the convenient quantification of the energetics of aromatization processes from partially hydrogenated double-stranded macrocycles, and facilitated the design and optimization of practical routes to synthesize the long-awaited zigzag molecular belts.

Guanidinocalix[5]arene for sensitive fluorescence detection and magnetic removal of perfluorinated pollutants

by Zhe Zheng

Nature Communications, Published online: 17 December 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-13775-1

Design of materials which allow for simultaneous detection and removal of water pollutants is challenging. Here the authors develop a guanidinocalix[5]arene that selectively binds perfluorinated alkyl substances and allows for fluorescence detection as well as removal of the pollutants in contaminated water.
