Orbital Mechanics

Chris.d.woo

I have to admit playing KSP has really helped me internalize a lot of the stuff I thought I already knew as a giant space nerd.

To be fair, my job at NASA was working on robots and didn't actually involve any orbital mechanics. The small positive slope over that period is because it turns out that if you hang around at NASA, you get in a lot of conversations about space.

CAN. NOT. WAIT.

I’ve played too much KSP because I see that and pretty much only see how bad of a launch that is (no gravity turn/pitchover, staging looks pretty bad, possible offset center-of-mass/thrust problems).

huffingtonpost: Homeless shelter is transformed into 5-star...

Chris.d.woo

There's something both interesting and off about this whole idea. I can't quite put my finger on what bugs me about it. Perhaps it is the one-time only part of the idea and that the resources might have been better used to marginally increase the shelter's operating capabilities for a longer period than a short transitory change.

huffingtonpost:

Homeless shelter is transformed into 5-star restaurant, hot food and warm hearts all around.  See the full video here.

Alright who wants to build a space program?

astrodidact:

Want to build your own space agency? Well, now you can, because NASA’s about to give away a whole bunch of their code for free! You’ll have access to the coding behind robots, cryogenic systems and climate simulators. There’s even code for running rocket guidance systems.

I am definitely loving this. Redskins fans take note: if your team owners won't do the right thing, do the right thing for them.

Cleveland baseball fans stand against racism by #DeChiefing their gear

In the past few months, debate surrounding the use of racial caricatures as pro sports mascots has reached a fever pitch. Just ask the Washington Redskins, who’ve endured significant backlash for both their refusal to change their name and their half-assed attempts to placate their critics.

But a few miles west, fans of the MLB’s Cleveland Indians are taking a stand. In a motion of solidarity, a small but growing number have been “de-Chiefing” their paraphernalia by removing the offensive “Chief Wahoo” mascot from caps and jerseys that bear its likeness.

Wealthy New Yorkers Face 164% Estate Tax Rate

by Paul Caron
Chris.d.woo

It's important here to note the difference between a marginal tax rate and an effective tax rate. These 164% tax rates do NOT surpass the total values of decedent's estates.

The idea that marginal phaseouts can create a massive increase in tax is one that's perhaps more important to low-income individuals who may receive similar >100% marginal tax rate increases just as they "escape poverty" (due to phaseouts in programs like the EITC). Contrasted to the plight of such taxpayers, I will not be shedding any tears for wealthy decedents affected by New York's estate tax program.

CNBC, New York Rich Face Tax Surprise When They Die: If you're a New York multimillionaire, you now have another incentive to stay alive. A change this month in New York's estate tax, which was billed as tax relief for the wealthy, contains a hidden wrinkle that could leave some...

Look at the thing Ford does with his fingers in the last image. Brilliant little piece of acting, completely sells the effect that the gun has somehow been yanked from his grip by the Force. Ties to his expression, surprise as much as alarm.

If he didn’t believe before, he sure as hell does now.

This is my ruler and notepad tattoo. I believe that tattoos can be used for functionality as well as memory. I’m a designer, so I use the ruler for buttons, zippers, and trim widths. Usually the notepad has an address or to-do list on it. :)

You know what, this is actually fucking genius.
