Something you’ll all just have to get used to…
The original Star Wars trilogy is my foundation mythology. It was my first immersion into new worlds, iconic characters, internal struggles. A multiverse followed. The wonderful spectrum of worlds and characters from books, comics, games, movies. But there will always be a special place in my squishy blue heart for Star Wars. My parents tell me “A New Hope" was my first movie ever. And forever would it dominate my destiny.
I go back to Star Wars way too much when I talk story/character theory. And I’ll warn you, I’ve got more/less/different story in my head than what actually happened. Some extrapolated, some wildly interpreted, some just plain reinvented, (come on now, how many of us have not done that?) and some delicious semi-priveledged cannon from the creators themselves. (Believe it or not - the early plot for Phantom Menace was amazingly good.)
So if you all actually want to hear more of my rambling, you may have to get used to stuff like “Here is how Jack Sparrow is functionally Obi-Wan Kenobi."
See, I’ll start with something like “I know we all hate that Wash dies in Serenity. But it wasn’t just random ‘time to kill someone off!’ Joss Whedon writes with a seasoning of eastern storytelling. Wash’s place in the universe was to be a leaf on the wind. He faced the challenge that has terrified him since the beginning -having the lives of his loved ones depend on him alone- the questions that tormented him “Am I enough? Am I worthy of the trust of Zoe and Mal? Who will I really be when it matters most?" and he succeeded in becoming everything he feared he couldn’t be. In that moment, he became Wash. His purpose in this world was complete, and he was perfected."
Then I begin ruining it with ranty tangents like “Kinda like Vader in the end…"
Also Joss should have written the descent of Anakin. Because Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is pure, distilled, villain-origin genius.
…See what I mean?
