This is So Important

If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. Your photos will go into the queue (usually 3-4 weeks wait) and will be posted in the order I receive them. If you’ve already entered your pet and would like to do so again – that’s no problem – just space the entries out a bit. Please try to send horizontal photos 640×480 (medium size on your iphone) if possible. If you’re not using an iphone any size is fine.

Memorial Animal Fix for Tenley, Biggy, Lila and Bella Killed in the Isherwood Explosion

by Prince Of Petworth

“Dear PoPville,

I was a resident of the Northeast DC home that was intentionally set ablaze on June 4th.

My fiance and I lost our dog, Tenley, and my neighbor her dog (Biggy smalls) and a cat (Lila).

We wanted to acknowledge their lives in some small way:

To Lila: You may have been a devilish cat, but I loved you anyway. I’m so grateful to have had you by my side for 13 years. I loved you both so very much and miss you everyday.

14272602088_bb11f2d0d4_z

To Biggie Smalls: May there be plenty of baby carrots to munch on and people for you to cuddle with where ever you are.

Today would’ve been Biggie’s 5th birthday, and I think this is a great way to remember him and the other furry friends we miss so dearly.

14272753817_aaca37406a_z

To Tenley (aka T, T-dog, T-money): We hope that Great Dane heaven is a place full of plush, king-size beds, peanut butter by the spoonful, and grassy fields to roll around in. We hope you know how much you are loved and missed. High-five, sweet girl. Love, Mom & Dad.

14436093936_f04c82a202_z

We don’t have photos, but a very loving pit-bull, Bella, was also lost in the fire. She made so many smile. xo Bella.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for giving us a public place to recognize the furry family members who were taken from us. – Laurie, Mike & Lauren”

National Zoo’s Invertebrate Exhibit, “home to dozens of small aquatic and terrestrial species without backbones”, closing Sunday

by Prince Of Petworth
V.w.verweij

I hate this.

Photo: Jessie Cohen/Smithsonian’s National Zoo

From the National Zoo:

“The Smithsonian’s National Zoo Invertebrate Exhibit, home to dozens of small aquatic and terrestrial species without backbones, will close to the public Sunday, June 22. The last day to visit the Invertebrate House is Saturday, June 21.

“This difficult decision is not a reflection of the importance of invertebrates or how we feel about them,” said Dennis Kelly, Zoo director. “The exhibit has been a hidden gem cared for by passionate and expert staff. But this was a necessary decision for the financial and operational health of our organization.”

Closing the Invertebrate Exhibit permits the Zoo to reallocate funding, staff and resources to other areas of the Zoo that need attention. With overall costs escalating, the Zoo must adapt its activities and programs to live within its existing budget while continuing excellent animal care and planning for the future.

Every permanent staff person will retain their job and be reassigned to other positions throughout the Zoo. The Invertebrate Exhibit, as it exists today, is not included in the Zoo’s Strategic Five-Year Plan or its 20-Year Programmatic Master Plan. The long-term vision includes a future Hall of Biodiversity, which will include some invertebrate species. The annual operating cost for the Invertebrate Exhibit is $1 million. The exhibit currently needs an estimated $5 million in upgrades to equipment, life-support systems, building infrastructure and exhibit interpretation.

In 1987, the National Zoo opened the Invertebrate Exhibit in the basement of the Reptile Discovery Center. Hailed as a ground-breaking exhibit at the time, it allowed the Zoo to showcase and educate visitors about invertebrates as nature’s unsung heroes, quietly playing vital roles in Earth’s ecosystems. Invertebrates make up about 99 percent of all known living species. Today, the Invertebrate Exhibit is home to the common cuttlefish, corals, anemones, the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, water scorpions, the giant hermit crab, leaf-cutter ants, the American spiny lobster, giant clam and butterflies, among others.

Per Smithsonian protocol, most of the animals will be de-accessioned through formal processes to new homes. Some will be moved to Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited facilities, and some may be moved to another location in the Zoo. Those with short life spans will likely live out their lives in the Invertebrate Exhibit.”

Ethical Trangression Vindicated

by John Herrman
V.w.verweij

Eric Prince! Leah's favorite!

by John Herrman

Here is a short documentary about private military contractors produced by Vice to promote the next Call of Duty jump-and-shoot game. Interview subjects include: Erik Prince of Blackwater, P.W. Singer of the Brookings institution, and David Sanger of the New York Times. The cut at the end—ᴀ ɴᴇᴡ ᴇʀᴀ ᴏғ ᴄᴀʟʟ ᴏғ ᴅᴜᴛʏ ɪs ᴄᴏᴍɪɴɢ—is legitimately startling, even if the branding is otherwise clear.

But is that what they're talking about right now at Activision? Or at Vice? Tone and propriety and boundaries? The deed is done. Probably not.

Here's what they might be talking about: Pan your view from Twitter to the YouTube comments, where 4500+ people have posted notes. They're fans, mostly—the people this video was ostensibly aimed at. Here's what they have to say.

Yeah, that's great…now will there be dedicated servers?

-Sounds interesting, but the gameplay is probably going to be just the same.

-This actually seems interesting for once. Now i cant wait to see the game in action!

-Hopefully this isn't a letdown like ghosts was

-Go back to world war 2 please

-So basically, instead of good vs bad, the next COD will be about how some military service betrays their leaders and makes a full team for themselves? If so, THEN I will be interested.

-Go back in time! I want Vietnam or Korea!

-This would be a great concept. Since I'm assuming you're playing as PMC, this could go greatly for new features.

Over a million views, 17,966 likes to 1,103 dislikes. Pretty good for an ad campaign OR a news video. Everybody wins

But in an email, Sanger said he doesn’t remember agreeing to be part of an advertisement.

“I was contacted by Vice Media some weeks ago and taped a few short items for what they described as a documentary on private military contractors,” he wrote. “To my memory, there was no mention of Activision or video games.”

An ad so native even its actors don't know it's an ad. The form has been perfected!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Rex and Mac

by ARLnow.com
Rex and Mac Rex and Mac Rex and Mac

This week’s Arlington Pet(s) of the Week are Rex and Mac, two English bulldogs whose snorts can be heard all over Clarendon and Courthouse.

Here’s what owner Lindsey had to say about her short-snouted friends:

If you live anywhere near the Clarendon/Courthouse area you’ve probably seen (and heard) Rex and Mac strutting their stuff through town. That is, if the temperature is just right. If not, the strut becomes more like a crawl for Rex, and Mac has to help pull his brother along. You can’t miss the chorus of bulldog snorts as they approach from behind. They love to say hi, but don’t stop us if we have some momentum going or we may never get moving again. They can also be seen sunning themselves at our front door, barking a greeting to anyone passing by and protecting their 11-month-old human brother.

Rex just turned 6 and has been with us since he was 8 weeks old! He’s our first born baby and a sweet, laid back type of guy. He’s 65 pounds of pure wrinkly love! His tongue looks like it belongs to a bear and loves to give sloppy, drooly, bad breath kisses. He will sit there all day and just let you scratch his butt or behind his ears. Rex’s favorite pastimes include waiting at the freezer to be hand fed ice cubes and standing with two feet in the shower and two feet out while he drinks from the jets. He’s truly a special dog!

Mac is 2 years old and is a 60-pound, brindle ball of energy! If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was part boxer because he loves to run, jump and play. Aren’t all bulldogs supposed to be lazy 24 hours a day? Not Mac! He’s definitely got his lazy side though and can be found fast asleep on his back with all four legs up in the air snoring like an old man. Mac loves to cuddle and fall asleep with his head in your lap. He makes an excellent lap dog… all 60 pounds of him!

Rex wasn’t too sure of Mac when we first introduced them, but they are now the best of friends. Mac is such a good younger brother that he endlessly licks Rex’s ear just to make sure he’s nice and clean. The TV has to be on high volume when these two are playing tug of war, and the sounds effects are priceless. Although we have to sleep with ear plugs, sound machines, and fans in order to drown out the bully snoring, I can’t imagine ever living without these two amazing pups!

Amsterdam Falafelshop (photo via Facebook)An Amsterdam Falafelshop restaurant is coming to Clarendon, according to an online job posting.

The fast food restaurant, known for its falafel sandwiches and fries, is currently hiring managers for a new Clarendon location. The job posting notes that a manager is also needed for a late night shift.

Amsterdam Falafelshop’s original location is on 18th Street NW in Adam’s Morgan. It has been expanding, with locations opening in Boston, Annapolis and on 14th Street NW in D.C.

It’s unclear where exactly the new restaurant in Clarendon will be located or when it will be opening.
