When Your Ex-Boyfriend Is Kale

by Matthew J.X. Malady

kaaaale People drop things on the Internet and run all the time. So we have to ask. In this edition, BuzzFeed News sportswriter Lindsey Adler tells us more about what it’s like to really love Kale.

Cool thing about having an ex-boyfriend named after a trendy vegetable is that ordering a salad for dinner often feels like a comical affair

— Lindsey Adler (@Lahlahlindsey) December 12, 2014

Lindsey! So what happened here?

My first love was a man named Kale, and he broke up with me in the middle of the night one August a few years ago. He just kind of looked at me and said, “I can’t do this anymore,” and I reacted poorly. Breakups are painful, followed by periods of uncertainty, denial, and adjustments. Reminders of what was and will never again be should be avoided at all costs, but for me, it wasn’t that simple: The name of the man who broke my dang heart was plastered all over menus and the NYT Style pages. It took me an unreasonable amount of time (two years) to begin eating kale salads, despite all my hippie-ass, pseudo-vegan inclinations. The word still seems foreign when referencing leafy greens, like I’ve taken a relic from a much different time in my life and applied it in a new way. It’s no longer painful, of course, but it makes for a quick, funny story to be told over brunch.

When I met Kale he was the most beautiful, exciting man I’d ever known (and I’m not quite sure that’s changed, actually). He was tall, funny, and loved to skateboard, sail, and ride his bike—then the three hobbies I found most attractive in a man. (Now, I’d probably determine my total trifecta to be love for books, baseball, and expressing strong opinions.) Kale and I began dating just after I’d turned twenty, and our relationship unfolded over the most chaotic year-and-a-half of my life. I was terribly confused about myself, my loved ones, and the world around me at the time, and I had little guidance or direction to help me out. So I leaned on the person who loved me, and built habits for what I now know to be called a codependent relationship.

We didn’t have much in common, but does that ever really matter when you’re young and entranced by the concept of infatuation? I’m careful not to exaggerate the significance of a year-long adolescent relationship, but my head and heart were definitely “in it” in the way that one could only be with the naivety of never having experienced heartbreak. After we broke up, I was a really shitty, annoying person for a disproportionately long time. Like, I had zero self-awareness or ability to hide my heartbreak and sadness. But still, I consider myself lucky that my first heartbreak came from a man who is kind, considerate, and yes, happens to be named for a leafy green.

How often does his name come up in your day-to-day life, and do you automatically think of him every time it happens? Will that ever not be the case, or are you stuck with that association forever?

I mean, it’s said that you never forget your first love, right? I think that sentiment is meant to reference some nostalgic longing or something, but for me, it resonates more when I’m in line for a salad on a Tuesday afternoon. It’s been a few years since we broke up, and it’s not like I’m sobbing while scrolling Seamless or anything. It’s just amusing, really. Also, “yeah, the first person who broke my heart was named Kale” is a pretty good way to spark a conversation at brunch.

Lesson learned (if any)?

Be reckless with your affection, but if you’re a vegetarian, try not to fall in love with someone named after a popular vegetable.

Just one more thing.

Heartbreak gets a worse rap than it deserves. The moments that have felt the worst have ultimately turned out to be the moments for which I am most appreciative. Without tragedy, I would not know the glory of triumph.

When Kale and I broke up, I immediately lost what I had thought was a system of support, but was truly more of a crutch. It felt like it’d happened at the worst possible time. Now, I consider it as having been an opportunity to face my demons with no other choice. What a blessing that was, to confront my crazy early enough in my life to avoid letting it sabotage anything important.

americasgreatoutdoors: Yesterday, visitors to the Grand Canyon...

americasgreatoutdoors:

Yesterday, visitors to the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona got to see this rare and amazing sight. This meteorological phenomenon is called a total cloud inversion, and it happens when the air near the ground is cooler than the air above it, creating a blanket of clouds.

Pictured here are the views of the total inversion from Mather Point on the South Rim (top) and near Desert View (middle and bottom). Photos by National Park Service.

Citizens Inconvenienced

by Alex Balk

Oh yeah don't ruffle any feathers or anything. DC Protestors blocked off the 395 bridge and the key bridge this week. I think we might have one up on NYC with this one.

“‘The [holiday] market is under security,’ said Farukh Gadov, a manager at a waffle food-stand in Union Square. ‘They’re making sure [protesters] avoid the market.’”
Protests against the state’s frequent, sometimes fatal use of excessive force against African Americans are adding to the stress of daily life, notes the Wall Street Journal, but at least you can still shop the Union Square holiday market without too much trouble. Have a snack while you’re there, it gives you a little extra energy when all that shopping tuckers you out.

“We have all noticed Bloomingdale has been charged with a new tense and violent energy”

by Prince Of Petworth
V.w.verweij

It's tense on the edge of gentrification. Big surprise there...

6089119500_2291e7c401_z
Photo by PoPville flickr user KingoftheHill.

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived in the same apartment in Bloomingdale for 3 years and know all my neighbors, love the neighborhood and the vibe. Increasingly, over the past year, we (neighbors, my bf and I) have all noticed Bloomingdale has been charged with a new tense and violent energy. In the evenings, it’s not as noticeable, people are out and about going to Yoga District, Ren Hen, Boundary Stone, Big Bear Cafe, etc.

The daytime hours are the worst times to be out. We usually walk our yellow lab around midday between 12 pm and 4 pm and almost every day we are verbally accosted and threatened by young men driving or walking through the neighborhood (between Rhode Island and Florida on 1st and 2nd Streets NW.)

They usually try to hit on me and when I ignore them or refuse their comments/advances, it immediately turns to threats of violence–“Fuck you bitch. I’ll fucking fuck you up. Watch your back, bitch. Don’t walk away from me. I know where you live. I should’ve robbed you. I’ll fucking rob you.” This afternoon a guy in a van followed me for blocks and wouldn’t leave me alone screaming at me for ignoring him and threatening to hurt me and rob me and that he knew where I lived–I’m sure he doesn’t, but still scary enough. My landlord just happened to be walking towards us and his presence scared off the guy in the van. We reported the incident to the non emergency police tip line.

With my bf, they instantly threaten him, follow him for blocks saying some form of the above. It’s always some threat of violence, “Hey faggot, I’m going to follow you into that alley and fuck your shit. Stupid fucker, let’s get him. Let’s fuck him up. Follow that fucker.”

As I mentioned before, I know all my neighbors and these young men don’t live here that I’ve seen. They’re usually walking through in groups of 3 or more or they’re driving around on the quiet, short, cross streets that don’t connect to main thoroughfares. They’re cruising around seemingly looking to interact with pedestrians. The worst places are the gas station area on Rhode Island and Florida NW, and the STRANGE “electronics shop” on the corner of Florida and 2nd Street NW. There are always drug deals out in the open in front of that shop or on the quiet streets nearest the shop (2nd and T NW). I’ve seen so many drugs and money exchanged during the daytime around that area.

Our neighbors are really good about being “present” in a lot of different ways. We have really young children that play basketball or football on the sidewalks, neighbors sit out on their stoops, and socialize and report anything suspicious. We all watch out for each other but I’m concerned about the escalation and the frequency of these incidences and feel like they’re getting worse. It makes me want to be outside less and less.

I’m curious if others in Bloomingdale on different streets have noticed this as well.”

From a press release:

“Introducing SoberWoman!
Anti-DUI Superheroine Hits Dupont Circle’s Happy Hour Scene to Stop Drunk Driving Before It Starts

WHAT: SoberWoman, the finest anti-drunk driving crime-fighter ever to wear tights, will be deployed tomorrow night to stop drunk driving before it starts. Created by the anti-drunk driving campaign Checkpoint Strikeforce to educate the public, SoberWoman will be joined in her mission by DC’s Metropolitan Police Department.

SoberWoman will engage the partying masses at four Dupont Circle bars where she’ll quiz them on their plans to get home after drinking. The raven-haired superheroine will award prizes to those who demonstrate they’ve made advance plans to get home safely. She’ll also warn “the plan-less” that police are stepping up their efforts to catch and arrest drunk drivers. SoberWoman will pose for pictures and encourage bar-goers to share photos and her mission via social media, using hashtag #SoberWoman. SoberWoman’s future missions later this month will take her to other bar districts in the greater Washington, D.C. region.

A recent poll showed that nearly one-third of 21-to-35-year-old males do not make advance plans to avoid drinking and driving BEFORE they go out. With the holiday season now heating up, now is the time for stepped up vigilance against drunk driving.

“architects created a breathtaking assortment of stylish outdoor winter shelters to help keep homeless cats warm during the frigid winter months”

by Prince Of Petworth

From a press release:

“The second annual Architects for Animals’ project, “Giving Shelter,” returns to aid Washington DC’s homeless, stray and outdoor cats on Wednesday, January 14, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at The American Institute of Architects, 1735 New York Avenue, NW. The event will benefit the Washington Humane Society (WHS).

Outdoor cats with no particular home or owner are vulnerable to the harsh conditions of winter. Architects for Animals launched in New York City in 2010 asking architects and designers to create the most inspired winter shelters imaginable for outdoor cats. At past events, architects created a breathtaking assortment of stylish outdoor winter shelters to help keep homeless cats warm during the frigid winter months. The undertaking helped to create new awareness about the plight of NYC’s feral and free-roaming cats, and has since spread to DC and Los Angeles.

Designers from some of the DC area’s best design firms will be in attendance to showcase their clever creations, including: Accent General Contracting, Inc., Aggregate Architecture + Design, American Institute of Architects, Bonstra Haresign Architects, Epicurean Craftworks, Lemay Erickson Willcox Architects, OTJ Architects, Studios Architecture, Marshall Moya Design, Martinez + Johnson Architecture, Parsons Corporation, PGAL, PGN Architects, R2L: Architects, Shalom Baranes Associates Architects, and Suzane Reatig Architecture.

Each stylish shelter will be on display for the public at the January 14 fundraising reception at The American Institute of Architects, and then will be donated to WHS to be used by local cat colony caretakers.

New this year, Washington Humane Society Community Cats Manager Danielle Bays will be conducting a cat cottage building workshop for attendees, and we will be collecting shelter building supplies.

“We are really excited to see all of our friends of community cats come together to help celebrate our work and the lives of our cats,” Bays stated. “Cats are a cherished part of our community and Architects for Animals is a wonderful (and stylish) opportunity to remind people that community cats are not homeless, but belong to the neighborhoods they live in.”

Tickets may be purchased for $25 and include complimentary sips and bites. 100% of event proceeds will benefit the life-saving work of the Washington Humane Society. Purchase tickets online at www.washhumane.org/AFA2015 or call 202-735-0324. Limited tickets may be available at the door if not sold out pre-event; cash, check, and credit cards will be accepted.”

Pupatella Named Best Pizza in Virginia

by ARLnow.com

Pupatella (photo via Google Maps)Pupatella is getting accolades for its Neapolitan style pizzas. A recently released list puts it at the top, compared to all other pizza joints in the state.

FlipKey.com, a TripAdvisor company, put together a list of “Best Pizza Worth Traveling For” and chose one pizza place for each of the 50 states. Arlington’s own Pupatella received the honors for Virginia.

A representative for FlipKey said the winners were chosen based on market research and traveler feedback.

The full list of the best pizza worth traveling for in each state is available online.

Last year, Pupatella won another ABBIE for being named the best pizza place in Arlington, and also made the Washington Post’s list of “40 dishes Washingtonians shouldn’t live without in 2013.”

Looking Back At The Screen: The First Annual Appalachian Queer Film Festival

by Erica Lies

unnamedThe way the Appalachian region sits in the popular imagination, it’s the last place anyone would expect to find a film festival celebrating queer identity. But in the same month that West Virginia—the only entirely Appalachian state—legalized same-sex marriage, it also welcomed the first annual Appalachian Queer Film Festival, boasting a diverse lineup of features and documentaries. It included mainstream films like Skeleton Twins, starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader and To Be Takei, the Sundance documentary about actor George Takei. The festival featured lesser-known films such as Kumu Hina, a documentary about a transgender woman who teaches and preserves Hawai’i’s indigenous culture, and Goodbye Gauley Mountain, a protest against the ravaging practice of mountain top removal by filmmaker Beth Stephens and performance artist Annie Sprinkle.

I spoke with festival founders Tim Ward and Jon Matthews on the eve of their opening night. Over the telephone, we talked about growing up queer in Appalachia, bringing independent film to West Virginia, and showcasing the contemporary Mountain State.
