Arlington Pet of the Week: Stella

by ARLnow.com Sponsor

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Stella, a little dog full of love. Here is what he owner, Ruth, had to say about her:

Stella was adopted from Homeward Trails in Arlington, VA. She was supposed to stay for the weekend, while her foster mom was away. But this 7 pound ball of black fluff found a permanent place at the table within 5 minutes. No one knows the complete story of the then 10-year-old toy poodle, but it was clear she wanted to be loved. 24/7 loved. On your lap all the time loved. In your arms held like a baby loved. Sleeping under your neck at night loved. It was easy to give it to her and I never looked back. My kids joke that she took the pressure off of them to give me grandchildren yet. (If they are reading this — NOT TRUE!) But, she is my current baby and for that I am grateful.

Stella is happiest in my arms, and I forget sometimes she is a dog, and rock her while I stand, to the amusement of others on the elevator! But that’s okay, we find our way out and about together because that makes us happy. I am hopefully making up for some possible rough years she experienced before she came to me — she has no teeth left and other signs that her life wasn’t one big bowl of puppy chow.

She is known for her incredible bouncing and dancing when she wants to be picked up, her pokey way outside just doing the bare minimum so she can return inside, her love for peanut butter and for making my life much more delightful these past 5 years. We are two mature ladies aging  up with a sense of humor — and loving every minute of it. We say grey is the new blonde, and softer bellies are so much more comfortable!

Want your pet to be considered for the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email arlingtonnews@gmail.com with a 2-3 paragraph bio and at least 3-4 horizontally-oriented photos of your pet. Please don’t send vertical photos, they don’t fit in our photo galleries!

Each week’s winner receives a sample of dog or cat treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks. Becky’s Pet Care is the winner six consecutive Angie’s List Super Service Awards, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters’ 2013 Business of the Year and a proud supporter of the Arlington County Pawsitively Prepared Campaign.

Becky’s Pet Care provides professional dog walking and pet sitting in Arlington and all of Northern Virginia, as well as PetPrep training courses for Pet Care, CPR and emergency preparedness.

Thanks to Sara Multanen for sending:

“I recently stayed at the Double Tree motel in Silver Spring, MD and this peregrine falcon is nesting right outside the window on the 12th floor and currently has 4 eggs. It was a treat to observe this beautiful creature up close for the 4 days that I was there. I mentioned it at the front desk–they knew about the falcon but were unaware of the eggs.”

Arlington Pet of the Week: Sesame

by ARLnow.com

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Sesame, a social pup who loves people and dogs alike. Here is what his owner, Bethany had to say about him:

Sesame is a half Dachshund, half Pomeranian who lives in Arlington, VA.

You may have seen Sesame around the Penrose neighborhood — where many refer to him as “The Mayor of Penrose” because of his vicarious nature, ubiquitous presence and quickness to roll on his back for belly rubs and get love from other dogs. His mom calls him the dog whisperer, as dogs fall in love with him the moment they meet. Other owners will stand in amazement, saying their dog is normally unfriendly with or scared of other dogs. One of his favorite things to do is sit outside on William Jeffrey’s patio and people watch, hoping they will stop and say hello (he’s a bit of a ham!).

For such a small guy, Sesame has no fear when it comes to other dogs — running to them with vigor. The bigger the dog, the more Sesame wants to play! He often gets on his hind legs to be able to reach up and give them kisses.

The only time Sesame is afraid is when his mom leaves him — so she’s nicknamed him “Sesame Chicken”. Otherwise he loves to visit dog parks and being the fastest runner there — often starting a large running train with several dogs following! Other dog parents love seeing Sesame because they know their dogs will be worn out by the time they leave.

Lastly, Sesame currently has 3 girlfriends, including a puppy in his building, a full grown Golden Doodle and a mixed breed who looks to him to lead her around the dog park.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Tanner

by ARLnow.com

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Tanner, a golden retriever/cavalier King Charles mix with a huge heart. Here is what his owner, Tania, had to say about him:

I am writing to brag about my adorable little pup, Tanner! Anyone who knows me well knows that I could talk about this boy for hours. Tanner is the first dog I have ever had, and he has been the biggest joy. I had always begged my parents for one growing up, and when I lost my father very unexpectedly on Christmas Eve 2014, I couldn’t think of a better way to help me overcome the indescribable pain. He’s been a shoulder to cry on, partner in crime and best buddy. He has extremely fluffy ears, he is ALWAYS smiling and always smells like oranges. I think it’s funny how dogs can’t understand you, can’t speak, sniff you, make weird faces, lick/bite you but become the very best friends you will ever have (think about that with humans). Can’t imagine my life without this little guy.

Tanner is a golden retriever/cavalier king Charles spaniel mix, so I wasn’t really sure how he was going to look or how big he would become! He will be two on March 4, and weighs about 30 pounds, still small enough to where I can pick him up when I want to force him to cuddle 🙂

Let’s celebrate #WorldFrogDay!

The beginning of Spring is the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about some of the creatures who welcome the warmer weather – frogs, and March 21 also happens to be World Frog Day!

Quite a few species of frogs and toads call BLM-managed public lands home. The BLM manages the nation’s most ecologically diverse aquatic habitats, ranging from isolated desert springs to Alaska’s North Slope tributaries. The habitats total 132,000 miles of fish-bearing streams and rivers, 3 million acres of lakes and reservoirs, 150,000 miles of riparian areas, and 13 million acres of wetlands. Aquatic resources on BLM-managed public lands support the nation’s aquatic biodiversity, support public recreation, and help sustain Native American cultural heritages.
