LG Display unveils world’s slimmest full HD LCD panel for smartphones; And it could be used in the upcoming G2

by Dusan Belic
LG Display unveils world's slimmest full HD LCD panel for smartphones

LG Display unveiled what it says is the world’s slimmest Full HD LCD panel for smartphones. The 5.2-inch panel could be used in the soon-to-be-launched LG Optimus G2 (or just G2), which will sport the same-sized display.

Only 2.2mm thin with a 2.3mm bezel, the new panel is also narrowest, providing larger visible display space on smartphones, while making end products (smartphones) lighter and easier to grip. Moreover, it also provides superiority in displaying resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio results in enhanced outdoor readability. The panel has a brightness of 535 nits at maximum, outperforming all current mobile Full HD LCD panels; and Ambient Contrast Ratio of 3.74:1 based on 10,000.

More about the panel – things I don’t quite understand:

Key to realizing the world’s slimmest panel is LG Display’s Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS), the latest touch technology enabling an enhanced touch screen experience, developed and applied to the new panel for the first time ever. Dual Flexible Printed Circuits, superior to a single circuit, have been inserted between the panel and touch film, reducing the number of lines on the panel by more than 30 percent. Utilization of a direct bonding system has also resulted in Optical Clear Resin between the panel and touch film for greater brightness.

Now we can’t wait to get our hands on the G2, yet again hoping it will use this panel. ;)

Google Adds Voice to Hangouts, Voice Calls Are Back in Gmail But Not Mobile Apps -Yet

by Wade Keye
video call 2

Today Google quietly announced the return of voice calling to Gmail, as well as Google+ and the Hangouts Chrome extension. A cherished feature, voice calling wasn’t included when Hangouts and Gmail’s chat were integrated last May. While no voice integration is currently announced for Google’s mobile applications, it could be coming down the pipeline soon.

Google launched a unified version of Hangouts during it’s Google I/O event last May. The new Hangouts combined all the many forms of chat that Google offered into one app. Strangely Google Voice was left out, however -including the ability to make free (and/or cheap) calls from within Gmail. While many decried the removal of a favorite feature from Gmail, Google assured us Voice integration would be coming to Hangouts. It should be rolling out in the coming week. So, Hopefully Voice will be coming to Google’s mobile apps soon as well!

Google Senior Software Engineer, Alex Wiesen announced the return of the call functionality and the simple steps for making calls in a blog post:

For those of you who have taken the plunge and are using desktop Hangouts in Gmail, Google+, and the Chrome extension, we’ve heard loud and clear that you miss the ability to make calls from Gmail, so today, we’re happy to announce it’s back – and better than before! Even better: calls to the US and Canada are now free from all countries where Hangouts calling is available. And international rates remain super, super low.

Today’s launch also improves the desktop calling experience in a number of ways. For example: you can add multiple phone numbers and video participants to the same call; and you can play sound effects (like applause or laughter) with the Google Effects app.

To make a call from Hangouts, just look for the new phone icon in Gmail, or for the new “Call a phone” menu item in Google+ and the Chrome extension. And of course: if you haven’t yet tried Hangouts in Gmail, you can always click your profile photo in the chat list and select “Try the new Hangouts.”

Making calls from Hangouts is rolling out over the next couple of days. As we’ve said before: Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice, and making and receiving calls is just the beginning. So stay tuned for future updates.

The Joys of 802.11ac WiFi

by Jarred Walton

We’ve had quite a few major wireless networking standards over the years, and while some have certainly been better than others, I have remained a strong adherent of wired networking. I don’t expect I’ll give up the wires completely for a while yet, but Western Digital and Linksys sent me some 802.11ac routers for testing, and for the first time in a long time I’m really excited about wireless.

Mediatek MT6592 8 Core Processors Will Arrive by the End of the Month

by Radu Iorga

Taiwanese sources are reporting that Mediatek’s 8 core CPU will debut by the end of July, which is this month. Full scale production will debut in November apparently, so expect a few slates and phones around Christmas time.

mediatek-mt6599-8-core-chips-4g-lte

The new CPU is the Mediatek MT6592, an 8 core processing unit, one that is made up of 8 Cortex A7 units. The processor is clocked at up to 2 GHz and it uses a 28 nm manufacturing process. Early tests of the 8 core MT6592 achieved scores of up to 30k points in AnTuTu, even beating the Samsung 8 core Exynos 5410 processor.

Forget about quad core tablets at low prices, since we’re entering the era of affordable 8 core slates, based on Mediatek’s solution. More cores is just the start and in a few months I expect to pass the Full HD level on handsets and possibly reach 2K level on tablets.
