200 Trump inauguration protesters face 70 years in prison each over 6 broken windows

by Cory Doctorow

Donald Trump is the least popular president to serve in US history, so it's no surprise that the call for mass, "J20 demonstrations" at his inauguration would be answered by massive crowds.

As with many protests, there was a small number of black bloc participants who engaged in minor acts of vandalism, smashing six windows. The DC police kettled hundreds of protesters in response, and after more than 100 escaped, they slapped the remaining 200 protesters with felony conspiracy charges, so that each protester now faces up to 70 years in prison for being in the same place as a black bloc action.

Among the defendants is Alexei Wood, a freelance photojournalist who had his equipment seized by police, who are able to use the pretense of his guilt to get ahold of his footage and use it against the other defendants.

It’s ultimately unclear what will happen to Wood and his co-defendants during their trial and in subsequent cases. “Nobody knows what to expect,” said Cohen, the lawyer. It seems clear to observers, though, that the case against Wood and the rest of the defendants — and the looming 70-year sentences — is meant to send a message. “I don’t know what kind of mental gymnastics they’re going to have to perform in the courtroom to make that seem reasonable,” said Stokes. “You could murder someone — if somebody walked into downtown D.C., pulled a gun out, and shot a cop in the head — and you could get less time than what these people are facing.” First-degree murder charges in D.C. carry a minimum sentence of 30 years.

Stokes said the case represented a drastic overreach in law enforcement’s response to the protests. “There are approximately 200 people facing 70 years, going to trial for six broken windows,” he said. “This is insane.” Stokes added that the protesters were not given an order to disperse.

The injustice of the arrest, the charges, and the case isn’t lost on Wood either. And while the government may be trying to turn the defendants against each other, he is maintaining a sense of solidarity that he plans to carry even after his own case ends. “Any fucking support I can give them,” Wood said, of the other defendants facing trial, “I will.”

DIY ant killer

by Mark Frauenfelder

Homebrew ant killer made from sugar, borax, and water is very effective in keeping ants out of the house. Dissolve a half cup of sugar with 1.5 tablespoons of borax into 1.5 cups of warm water. Then dip a cotton ball into the solution and set it on a countertop (where kids and pets won't eat it). The ants will flock to it and 12 hour later, you won't see any more ants for a long time. Get a one-pound bag of borax on Amazon for $8.50 (which you can also use to make slime).

The Real History of St. Patrick’s Day

by Patrick Allan

When you think of St. Patrick’s Day, you probably think of green beer, shot glass necklaces that say “Kiss Me I’m Irish,” and everybody talking about how Irish they suddenly are. That’s all well and good, but I bet you don’t know much about the holiday’s origins, or the saint it celebrates. Well, take off that stupid…

Portland proposes a special tax on companies where CEOs make 100X more than median employee

by Cory Doctorow

Environmental lawyer-turned-Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick has a cool use for the new SEC rules requiring companies to disclose executive pay starting in 2017: he's going to impose special taxes on businesses where the ratio of CEO pay to median worker pay exceeds 100:1 -- an increase of 10% for 100:1 companies, and 25% for 250:1 companies. Bikes shipped in boxes with TV set printed on box suffer less delivery damage

by Mark Frauenfelder

Image: Twitter/@jasongay

Dutch manufacturer Vanmoof started printing a photo of a TV set on the boxes it uses to ship bikes. Now the bikes arrive at their destination in perfect condition.

From Cycling Weekly: “No matter who was doing the shipping, too many of our bikes arrived looking like they’d been through a metal-munching combine harvester. It was getting expensive for us, and bloody annoying for our customers,” creative director Bex Rad wrote on the company’s blog. “Earlier this year our co-founder Ties had a flash of genius. Our boxes are about the same size as a (really really reaaaally massive) flatscreen television. Flatscreen televisions always arrive in perfect condition. What if we just printed a flatscreen television on the side of our boxes? “And just like that, shipping damage to our bikes dropped by 70–80%.”

Future-proof beach residence in Washington State is raised to withstand mudslides

by Lidija Grozdanic

The Saratoga Hill House is located on a remote beach on Camano Island, Washington. The site is difficult to reach and doesn't have road access, which makes it hard to bring heavy equipment and building materials. Due to these limiting circumstances, the architects decided to use low profile steel columns and raise the house to mitigate potential mudslides. This structural solution also provides additional storage spaces for canoes and kayaks.

Concrete stairs lead from the ground level into the living room and kitchen on the first floor. This space features large windows that provide views of the Puget Sound. The second floor houses the bedrooms and is accessible via steel and wooden stairs. The top floor features an expansive rooftop deck.

Copenhagen's South Harbor School rises from the sidewalk to promote community

by Lidija Grozdanic

The building is located in a densely populated area that required additional educational facilities. As the new public school, the building merges its institutional and maritime qualities. With various seating and walking areas rising from the sidewalk onto the roof of the building, the school is designed to become an active part of the community.

The interior features spaces of different heights and natural lighting, ensuring that students, teachers and visitors are both surprised and challenged. This dynamic spatial condition also supports learning and developing social abilities among students.

“When you look at it, absolutely every single space is being used. I also love how this sits, it’s completely contextual and it has its own identity,” said Keith Papa, Architect Director at Building Design Partnership (BDP), and member of the WAN Awards jury. Congratulations on an exemplary and inclusive design.

The AR-15 Was Built for Slaughter in War Zones

by Sam Biddle on Gawker, shared by Alex Dickinson to Gizmodo

In 1962, the Pentagon had a pickle on its hands: America wanted to give South Vietnam guns with which to kill its Communist brothers and sisters in North Vietnam, but we couldn’t figure out which guns. The answer became as clear 50 years ago as it is today: The AR-15 is an incredibly good tool for killing lots of other humans.
