I Need Something Cheap So I Can Learn To Drive Stick! What Car Should I Buy?

by Tom McParland on Jalopnik, shared by Virginia K. Smith to Lifehacker

Meh, $500 beater. No need to spend over 1k when i plan on teaching you and trading it in a few months down the road.

Brandon is 31 and has always regretted not learning how to drive a manual transmission. He wants to get a cheap, fun beater with three pedals to learn the skill that many of us cherish so much. What car should he buy?

Are Audiences Too Lazy to Appreciate 'Blade Runner 2049'?

by Geek's Guide to the Galaxy
jlrgds

Honestly, I only shared it for the shitty title. "Did I make a movie that is incoherent and in-cohesive, and boring? No, it is the consumer that is wrong." -Meme.

The new movie might be set in 2049, but is it too slow and contemplative for audiences in 2017?

State Borders

A schism between the pro-panhandle and anti-panhandle factions eventually led to war, but both sides spent too much time working on their flag designs to actually do much fighting.

Scientists Prove Adding Water to Whisky Makes it Taste Better

by Emily Price
jlrgds

Yeah, the pretentious side of this would tweak him. But Scotch and Water or Scotch/Sour should always be okay, especially if that's how you like it and you are the one that's drinking it.

I used to get in debates almost every time I drank whiskey on whether or not it was appropriate to add water to the stuff. A few aficionado friends would always argue that the only way to drink whiskey was straight up, and I was ruining it with a few drops of H2O. I’d argue most whiskeys were a bit better with a few…

Total Solar Eclipse: Guess How Many People Can Actually Watch?

by Rhett Allain

Math about solar eclipses. Kinda neat, a little bit over my head.

When a total solar eclipse passes over the US on August 21, nerds will flock to the areas where they can see a total blackout. How many of them can fit?

Netflix's Secret Weapon Isn't Reboots—It's Genre Movies

by Peter Rubin
jlrgds

I like them keeping their stuff... fresh. Or at least fresher than a bunch of reboots. Don't expect them to start trying to create new genres.

The streaming service is offering money and creative freedom—and from a look at its first two projects, it won't be stopping anytime soon.

Netflix's 'Castlevania' Is the Future of Videogame Adaptations

by Julie Muncy
jlrgds

Huh, never noticed this on Netflix yet. Imagine it is a better made/scripted version of VampireHunter D. Good stuff too if not a little too cliche and tropey.

The anime version of the Dracula-killing, dungeon-crawling game franchise looks like a success—so we'll probably be seeing more like it.

Intel Core i9 CPU Has 18 Cores, 36 Threads, And Is Built For the Future

by Brian Barrett
jlrgds

Jeez, not even sure if there's a motherboard that can even handle this guy. 18 cores and 36 threads? Most normal programs and games can't even take advantage of hexa and octo-cores. You're stuck running dedicated cores to specific tasks, like virtual desktops/functions, etc. Expensive and neat.

The Core i9 has 18 cores, 36 threads, and looks a whole lot like where the PC industry's headed.
