2013_062_076

The Zoological and Botanical Park of Mulhouse is pleased to announce the birth of 'Dimbi' on the 8th of March. The male Blue-eyed Black Lemur baby is an ambassador for his critically endangered species. For the last 25 years, the park has worked to prevent the final extinction of this species. Less than 2000 individuals remain in the Madagascan wild. Special thanks to Life on White for these outstanding images.

Not a good outcome, though admittedly the US needs (and is unlikely to get any time soon, given legislative politics) a more modern basis for deciding violations of international law.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a major victory for multinational companies, the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday limited the ability of human rights plaintiffs to invoke a 224-year-old federal law when suing companies over alleged collusion with violent foreign governments.

Tapir Gets Tonguey at Howletts Wild Animal Park

by Andrew Bleiman

Vincent's favorite stripey baby aliens

Howletts Tapir 3

This past February, Howletts Wild Animal Park in the United Kingdom received the latest member of its family, a healthy male baby Brazilian Tapir. The little boy, who has been named Inca, spent the first few months of his life indoors and off exhibit due to the cold weather. He spent his time inside with the warmth of shelter, and the comfort of his mother.

To help make sure that his indoor enclosure stayed warm enough, a local plastic and insulation company, PAR Group, donated a special plastic door curtain to help with insulation. "Our latest baby Tapir has been born during the really cold weather, but thanks to the generosity of the PAR Group they are snug and warm inside their shelter with the plastic door strips on the entrance," said Animal Director Neil Spooner.

Now that the weather has begun to warm up, Inca has begun to explore his exhibit for visitors to see. "The little fella is doing really well and mum is keeping a close eye on him. Now that the weather is showing some signs of becoming milder, visitors should be able to spot them more easily, as they explore their paddock," explained Joel Bunce, the head of animal park's hoofstock section.

Brazilian Tapirs, native to Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela and Paraguay, are forest dwellers who spend their time living in the rainforest and swamps of their native range. After a thirteen month gestation, young are born with a variety of stripes and spots, as you can see on Inca. These help camouflage them in the forest to hide them from potential predators. This coloration will fade after approximately six months, and Inca will begin to grow a distinctive mane all the way down his neck.

Howletts Wild Animal Park is run by the Aspinall Foundation which is a leader in conservation efforts around the world. Specifically, they manage conservation projects in Congo, Gabon, Indonesia and Madagascar. They also support countless other projects around the world through financial assistance. The foundation and its two Wild Animal Parks, Howletts and Port Lympne, are some of the most successful breeders of endangered species in the world.

Video games prep miners for danger

by Shelley Littin-Arizona
Leahgates

I am Totally On Board with gaming, simulators, and virtual environments as training tools--as long as they're not the only tools.

U. ARIZONA (US) — Scientists are developing interactive computer games to better train miners to avoid fatal accidents and potential emergencies while on the job.

After a series of miscommunications at a surface mine in Ray, Arizona in 2012, a haul truck, several stories tall and used for transporting enormous loads of ore, rolled over a regular-sized vehicle that was invisible to the driver of the haul truck, killing the driver of the vehicle and injuring another of its two occupants.

“It’s usually a number of circumstances that compound together that ultimately lead to a tragic situation,” says Leonard D. Brown, a doctoral candidate in the department of computer science at the University of Arizona. In that case, it is believed that several miscommunications and small errors in safe mining practice led to the fatality.

Little Brocket Deer Arrives at Gladys Porter Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman
Red brocket (2)

A male Red Brocket Deer was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas on March 25.  Barely over two weeks old, the little fawn is already actively exploring the exhibit alongside his mother.

All Brocket Deer are small, but at about 30 inches tall at the shoulders, Red Brocket Deer are the largest of the ten Brocket species found in Central and South America.  Because these diminutive Deer are shy and secretive, not much is known about their habits, and there is some confusion about the taxonomy of the 10 species.  At this time, there is not enough data about the Red Brocket Deer to evaluate its conservation status.

Browsing on leaves and fruit, Red Brocket Deer inhabit dense forests and live solitary lives.  Males competing for mates will fight, using their short horns to inflict injury on their opponent.

Rare Pygmy Hippo Baby Debuts at Gladys Porter Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman

Baby hippo

With chubby cheeks and an upturned nose, a baby Pygmy Hippopotamus may look more like a video game character than a real animal.  But this male baby, born on February 22 at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, is an important addition to the population of this critically endangered species.

The male calf, who will be named in a soon-to-be-announced contest, made his public debut alongside his nine-year-old mother last week.  Zoo staffers report that the baby rarely strays far from his mother as he explores his surroundings.

Pygmy Hippos are native to West Africa, where they live secretive lives in the deepest jungles.  Found only in small pockets of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria, Pygmy Hippos are about half as tall and a quarter of the weight of their cousins the Common Hippos.  Pygmy Hippos spend the day submerged in rivers, emerging at night to eat ferns, fruits, and leaves.  To mark their territories, they wave their tails while defecating to spread feces as far as possible.

There are fewer than 3,000 Pygmy Hippos remaining in the wild, and little is known about their habits.  Though not intensely hunted, Pygmy Hippos are losing habitat to agriculture and unsustainable forest logging.  Programs like the Species Survival Plan of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums seek to maintain genetically diverse captive populations of Pygmy Hippos and many other endangered species.

Rare Wolf's Guenon Born at Sacramento Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman

Mimibaby21-1

On January 26th, Sacramento Zoo's female Wolf's Guenon gave birth to her first infant. Currently, there are fewer than 35 of these monkeys, housed at 11 AZA institutions in the United States. Mother Mimi and father Eddie have been very protective of the baby, making it difficult for keepers to determine the weight or even its sex.

Mimibaby17-1

Mimibaby23-1

“Little is known about Wolf’s Guenons because of their small population in zoos. In the wild, the dense forests in which they live make them hard to spot,” said Harrison Edell, Sacramento Zoo General Curator. “This birth is significant to the Sacramento Zoo; with every birth, we learn more about this species’ biology, contributing to our overall knowledge about this species.”

Wolf’s Guenons are native to central Africa where they inhabit forests and forage for fruits, seeds, and an occasional insect. Forming loose family groups in the wild, these monkeys are even known to spend time with other primate species including Bonobos, colobus monkeys and other guenons. A larger mixed-species group may mean that there are more eyes on the lookout for predators, and many guenons have learned to recognize other monkeys’ alarm calls so that they know how to respond correctly if a neighbor spots a leopard or eagle.

Adding customs officers could boost GDP

by Andrew Good-USC

USC (US) — A new customs and border protections officer at each of 33 selected land and airport locations could add $61.8 million to the US economy.

This step could also add 1,053 jobs in the US, according to a study released today by the National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE).
