The Power Of Speaking Out Is Cumulative

by Thomas

To quote Brandeis, sunlight is the best of disinfectants.  Rape happens in the dark and serial rapists depend on dark corners, both metaphorical and literal, to do that they do and get away with it.  The obvious answer is to throw a lot of light.  But many people are uncomfortable with how that actually works.

Here’s what really happens:  first, there’s a rumor that Jian Ghomeshi is some kind of bad guy or predator or can’t be trusted.   The general public didn’t know or suspect because his public persona was so lovable, and what people said in private about him seemed so wildly inconsistent with how the public saw him as to be implausible. He was a “missing stair” — the issue is at some level widely shared within informal social groups, but not openly acknowledged where outsiders can hear, and certainly not reported.  Then someone pushes and pushes, and the story breaks the surface.  There’s enough to report, and as soon as it breaks the surface, others start reporting.  The first few don’t use their names, at least not publicly, but then someone with a recognizable name say that he did something like that to her, too.  Then, only then, once there are five or eight or ten accusers, some using their own names, do the police belatedly catch up.  And now, there’s been no formal adjudication, but instead, employers, and crisis managers, and fans have each separately considered the information available the made probabilistic determinations.

Here’s what’s really happening:  first, there was a rumor about Bill Cosby, but his public persona was so lovable, so at odds with what he was like in private, that people wouldn’t believe it, even when they got first hand reports that objectively had no indicia or unreliability.  Then there was a lawsuit, and once one survivor was willing to stand up, others came forward, and by the time of trial the plaintiff planned to call twelve survivors, but it was never tried because Cosby settled, and nobody talked about it even when it was in the public record because the persona … well, it was Bill Cosby!  And it took not only the public record that a dozen or more survivors has been willing to get on the stand and swear to what happened, but also a male comic (Hannibal Buress) doing a regular bit about how Cosby was a rapist, to get people to finally be ready to listen, and now that people have considered it for maybe the fourth time and finally didn’t reject it out of hand, now that one of the survivors put her name next to the allegations, having nothing to gain, now Janice Dickinson, whose name and face we know, is willing to put her name next to it and say, “me, too.”  There has been, and their will be, no prosecution.  For a pattern that goes back, we’re hearing, to 1969, there will be no criminal accountability because his celebrity and his protectors won.  But right now, people are considering what they know, and making up their own minds about Bill Cosby.

A lot of people want the cops to decide what’s true and what isn’t.  They cannot be the sole determiners of that.  They can’t, because some of them are awful.  They’re not a monolith.  Some police have a sophisticated understanding of trauma and how survivors may be affected and some don’t.  Some are complete prisoners of their biases about what rape is, and some are not.  Some police have a burning desire to get the bad guys, and some are coasting.  Professionally, I’ve dealt with some wonderful officers, who make me happy about how my tax dollars are spent.  But we never know who will take the survivor’s report.  It won’t be Olivia Benson.

Rape is a crime, on the books, but the most common kinds of rape are rarely reported because reporting is affirmatively harmful for survivors (see links above); not taken serious by police (who often reject survivor accounts that are totally credible because they don’t fit the officers’ preconceived notions, or because the department wants to manage stats); by prosecutors, who let rape kits sit untested for decades; and by juries, which are a cross-section of society’s prejudices.  So the criminal justice system will not tell us if someone is a rapist or not.  If we want to know, we’re going to have to get the story another way, and the only way we’re going to get anything like the information we want is to let people tell the story, and see how many stories their are and what they add up to.  It may be there’s one story that doesn’t add up.  Or it may be there’s one, and another, then three and five and eight and twelve …

But if we say, “I don’t believe it unless the police decide it’s true,”  we’re never going to hear any of those stories and we’re never going to know how many there are.  If you say you won’t listen, you’re saying you want Bill Cosby and Jian Ghomeshi to get away with it.  Yes, you are.

Ghost Bat Stories at Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo, in Australia, is celebrating its first successful birth of a Ghost Bat pup in 15 years!

Born last month, the pup is the first for Taronga’s new breeding pair, ‘Celeste’ and ‘Nocturne’. The birth is also an encouraging sign for the regional breeding program for this vulnerable species.

Despite the challenges of breeding Ghost Bats, keepers are pleased with the progress of the pup, which can already be spotted on display at the Zoo’s Australian Nightlife exhibit.

Keeper, Wendy Gleen, said it may be a little while until keepers can determine the sex of the pup, so they are yet to choose a name. “The pup has been clinging to its mother for warmth and security, clutching onto her neck with its back legs,” said Wendy.

Ghost Bats are Australia's largest microbat, and their only carnivorous bat, preying on large insects, frogs, birds, lizards and small mammals, including other bats. As predators, they are important in the control of rodents, especially house-mice. Their name comes from the beautiful ‘ghost-like’ appearance of their wings in the moonlight.

Populations are under threat in the wild due to the loss of feeding habitat and destruction of caves and old mine shafts. “Ghost Bats are particularly vulnerable to mining, which can threaten their maternity caves,” said Wendy.

Wendy also said the birth of the pup provides a great opportunity for visitors to see these stunning but elusive creatures up close. “Ghost Bats are difficult to spot in the wild, as they often live in complete darkness and hide in remote caves. They’ve got the most amazing facial structures and use echolocation to find their way in the dark. Our modern sonar systems could probably learn a thing or two from these bats’ natural talents,” she said.

The Ghost Bat is native to Australia and currently listed as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. With less than 10,000 mature individuals, there has been a gradual decline in numbers, and there is a potential for an even faster rate of decline within the next few generations.

ZooBorns shared the story of Pup 681 on November 7, 2014. The female pup arrived at Shedd on October 28th from Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, where she spent the first four weeks of her life being stabilized.

Shedd Aquarium welcomed the orphaned Southern Sea Otter pup (Enhydra lutris nereis) from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as part of a collaborative partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program, a leading authority for the rescue, care and conservation of the threatened species.

Temporarily known as ‘Pup 681’, the female Sea Otter pup was found September 30th on Coastways Beach in California, between the San Mateo and Santa Cruz county lines. A citizen on an evening walk heard the newborn otter’s cry and quickly notified The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC). TMMC staff contacted Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program, which worked with officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to recover the pup and transport her to Monterey Bay Aquarium.

After accepting Monterey Bay Aquarium’s call to provide the Sea Otter pup with a permanent home, Pup 681 arrived at Shedd on October 28th, where staff are ensuring she thrives and reaches milestones needed to grow into a healthy adult otter. She is the second pup from the threatened Southern Sea Otter population to reside at Shedd.

Movember Madness at Belfast Zoo

by Andrew Bleiman
Leahgates

(1) Movember is in full swing at Belfast Zoo with the arrival of an emperor tamarin!

The Emperor Tamarins, at Belfast Zoo, are up and ready for “Movember”!  The newest moustached member of the zoo, ‘Lucky’, was born on September 28th to mother, ‘Bella’ and father, ‘Alfie’.

(2) The moustached little monkey, who has been named Lucky, was born on 28 September 2014 to mother, Bella and father, Alfie.

(3) These primates live in family groups and, while the mother nurses her offspring, it is the father who carries and cares for them.

(4) Alfie certainly has his hands full with the new arrival but luckily the pair’s other offspring, Dot, Ethel, Ping and Pong help out with the childcare!Photo Credits: Belfast Zoo

“Movember” is an international campaign, held every November. Men across the globe are encouraged to grow moustaches as a means to promote and raise awareness for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer.

Zoo manager, Mark Challis, said, “Emperor Tamarins are named after the German Emperor, Wilhelm II, because of their long white moustaches. It is fantastic that at less than two months old, little Lucky has a ‘Movember’ moustache to rival anyone’s!  Lucky is the third Emperor Tamarin to be born at the zoo in 2014, and we are delighted to welcome him to the Belfast Zoo family!”

Emperor Tamarins are found in the tropical rainforests along the Amazon River in Peru, Brazil and Bolivia.  These primates live in family groups, and, while the mother nurses her offspring, it is the father who carries and cares for them. Little Lucky’s father, ‘Alfie’, certainly has his hands full with the new arrival, but luckily the parent’s other offspring, ‘Dot’, ‘Ethel’, ‘Ping’ and ‘Pong’, help out with the childcare!

A Happy Ending for Two Rescued Red Panda Cubs

HENRY AND TINK

ANIMAL FRIENDS

Ep4 Red Pandas FINAL FINISHING MASTER.Still016

With four breeding pairs, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo has one of the most successful Red Panda breeding programs in the United States.  But even strong programs experience challenges:   Earlier this year, two Red Panda cubs – named Henry and Tink – almost didn’t make it.  But thanks to expert care, these two little ones are thriving, and you can see their story in this video.

Ep4 Red Pandas FINAL FINISHING MASTER.Still022

Henry was so sick at birth that keepers weren’t sure he’d survive his first day of life.    Because Henry is genetically valuable to the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, the zoo put as many resources as necessary into saving this little cub.  Henry stopped breathing, and he was on oxygen for one month.  He later overcame a bout of pneumonia, and by the time he was three months old, Henry had increased his weight ten-fold – a huge accomplishment given his rough start in life.

Tink was cared for by her mother for a short time, but she was not growing.  Keepers determined that her mother was not producing enough milk.  Again, the National Zoo’s staff swung into action and removed Tink from her mother’s care.  Today, Tink is gaining weight and growing just as she should.

Henry and Tink are constant companions, and even though Henry is much bigger, the staff says he is extremely gentle with his friend.  The two play, explore, and simply hang out together.

You can see Henry and Tink’s story in this web episode of Wild Inside the National ZooView the entire series to learn more about the behind-the-scenes operation of the National Zoo.

Even though this is our most word-heavy comic to date, it’s impossible to squeeze in everything you need to know about consent in roughly 700 words. Fortunately, there are others who have far more space to talk about consent and being a good, communicative sex partner (even as a one-time hook-up!) and I’d like to direct you towards these resources to learn more!

Trigger warning: this is a review of a dildo that purports to be a dragon penis

So yeah, the type of silicone density and size of the Fenrir model I tried out weren’t quite right for me, but I do think this is still a well-made and attractive dildo. I’m totes up for trying out some different models till I find the dragon dick of my dreams!

If the Fenrir sounds interesting to you check it out here, bonus points if you read the silly mini story they add to their toy listings:

Whether you should buy in or not is up to you, but we whole heartily recommend trying a few of Bad Dragons toys, at the very least, just to say you have.

AND! I’m super delighted to announce that the Oh Joy Sex Toy BOOK RELEASE PARTY is happening December 7th from 7-9pm at the brand new She Bop located at 3213 SE Divsion, Portland. They’ll be selling my favorite toys for 10% off that night AND I’ll be giving away an exclusive print to anyone who buys anything in their store.
