As destructive as Big Mouth’s impulsive Hormone Monsters can be, they’ve actually ended up being rather good influences on the teens they’ve been assigned to guide through puberty over the show’s past two seasons.
Here we are, rounding into the final third of 2019 (and the last four months of the decade, but we don’t need to talk about that). The year has already produced some heavy hitters of TV — Chernobyl, Fleabag, and Barry dominated the spring. GLOW, Euphoria, and Mindhunter have been indispensable parts of the summer. And huge sophomore seasons of Succession and The Terror are airing as we speak. There’s so much powerful TV out there already, it’s easy to forget how much more is still to come.
But come it shall. Along with progressively darker evenings in which to watch (at least in my part of the world, where curling up in a blanket with a TV show and a cup of tea is a time-honored fall coping mechanism).
There’s a lot of TV coming out soon, some of which we probably don’t even know about yet. Both Apple TV+ and Disney+ are unleashing themselves on the world this fall, meaning there are two more places to turn to in case you don’t have enough to watch already on Hulu, Cartoon Network, HBO, NBC, Amazon Prime, FXX, and Netflix. (They’re all here, by the way, giving us the most promising and exciting prospects of the season).
So here they are — in release order — the 10 most-anticipated TV shows of the rest of the year.
A mind-bending animated series from BoJack Horseman creatives Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, this Amazon Prime original is, technically, already out as of the day of this writing. But I haven’t seen it yet, and I’m sure as hell looking forward to it, so onto the list it goes. Starring Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk, among others, the series is said to follow a young woman’s new relationship with time after a near-death experience, and the shots from the trailer promise that the show will go to surreal places only animation could take it.
People familiar with my writing, or with Film School Rejects at all, shouldn’t be surprised to see It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on this list. Tied for the longest-running live-action comedy as of this year, the show keeps on proving that it has new and relevant and hilarious things to say. Last season’s finale, “Mac Finds His Pride,” was the most shocking and beautiful thing the show has ever done. While it’s impossible to say whether there’ll be anything quite so show-stopping this year, it’s bound to be a great ride and I’m ready for whatever the gang has to show us.
The Good Place is coming to an end, and while that’s sad, it might be a good thing. Not because we want it to end — oh, no — but because there’s a real satisfaction that comes with a show finishing early and on its own terms. Rather than moral philosophizing ad infinitum and resetting over and over (it’s the only show that could, realistically, do it), The Good Place is going to bow out having said exactly its piece. And hopefully, at the end of all this, our beloved humans (and their non-human friends) will have found someplace they can settle down and not be tortured for all eternity. Is that so much to ask?
Casting one actor in dual roles is a time-honored tradition that’s seen a lot of use lately. Usually, it’s as identical twins, with the exception of Orphan Black‘s inimitable Tatiana Maslany, who played a whole slew of clones. Living with Yourself promises to be a bit more in the clone vein, though much, much funnier, as Paul Rudd plays both the lead character Miles and the result of an innovative new spa treatment: an exact duplicate of Miles who is better in every way. I’ll laugh at Paul Rudd doing anything, and if I can laugh at two of him I’m more than onboard.
Last year’s premiere season about a Maine town brimming with Stephen King horror elements had its spooky ups and downs (while the episode “The Queen” was beautiful, I have a personal bone to pick with the flatness of the ending). But ups and downs are still movement, and the first season was more than interesting enough to warrant excitement for the second. Will we ever find out exactly who The Kid is? I almost hope we don’t, but I’m ready to anxiously try to figure it out when the show returns.
One of the first Apple TV+ commodities to grace us with its presence, the Jason Momoa vehicle is set in a dystopian future in which (almost) everyone is blind. With its star, high budget, and swords-on-horseback tone, it’s a clear contender for the hole in our lives left by Game of Thrones. We’ll find out if See fills it when it premieres on the same day as the launch of the streaming service.
There’s not another show I’m more excited for this year. So much attention is being paid to the disappointment of the 2007 film adaptation that it’s easy to forget the sheer wonder of the original novels. Philip Pullman’s non-religious answer to C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series, the literary trilogy teaches children (12-year-old me included) to be brave, to question, and to be kind to others innately, not out of fear or obligation. It’s an incredible series, and the HBO adaptation is looking very, very promising.
Set to premiere the same day Disney+ is released in the US and Canada, The Mandalorian is one of the new streaming service’s flagship enterprises, as well as the testing ground for whether audiences will be willing to pay for this, among other, hot new streaming channels. Whether it’ll be a success is still up in the air, but an all-new Star Wars story with Pedro Pascal in its lead role is a good way to start.
Boy am I ready for more Rick and Morty. I’m ready to see where Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon take us next, and I’m ready for new episodes to overshadow the weird pall that a tiny sliver of fans have cast on the show. If you’d like a great, quick palate cleanser that addresses that whole mess, please watch this very funny video. Or hell, just watch the three extant seasons of Rick and Morty. I did recently. I promise it’s even better than you remember. And this new season is bound to be amazing.
After being canceled by SyFy last year, The Expanse joined the ranks of beloved shows championed by devoted fans to be picked up and continued somewhere else. Then it joined the much smaller ranks of shows that did, indeed, get saved. And by Amazon Prime no less, where it will be premiering its fourth season. Fans have no reason to fear, either, because it’s already been renewed for a fifth season as well.

After months of rumors and speculation, we finally know who’s back, who isn’t, and who’s arriving for the first time when it comes to the cast of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel. And my god, it’s a hell of a big cast.
The finalists have been announced for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. This year’s crop features some stunning—and gut wrenching—images. With production on the second-season of Netflix‘s live-action adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba‘s comic book series The Umbrella Academy well underway, fans are starting to meet some of the new faces that will help – or hinder – the Hargreeves efforts to prevent the end of the world. Ritu Arya (Humans), Yusuf Gatewood (Good Omens), and Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man) will join the successful series’s sophomore return – here’s what we know:
● Arya’s Lila is a chameleon who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires. Unpredictable, mischievous and sarcastic, Lila’s gifted with a twisted sense of humor.
● Gatewood’s Raymond is a born leader with the smarts, gravitas, and the confidence to never have to prove it to anyone. He is warm, dedicated and has the innate ability to disarm you with a look. A devoted husband, he’s the kind of guy everyone wants to know.

Last month, Blackman posted an image of not only the first slate of filming but also a “family photo” of the show’s writers, actors, and artists (minus Min, which really does seem pretty ironic…). Though production was expected to start in May, a June start isn’t expected to impact the series’ early 2020 return.

The Umbrella Academy was given a 10-episode second season order in April 2019 – with Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin Min reprising their roles, with additional casting still to be announced.
Blackman returns as showrunner and executive producer, with Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg also returning to executive produce. Way and Bá will co-executive produce.

The Umbrella Academy is a 10-episode series based on the graphic novels of the same name created and written by Way, illustrated by Ba, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Netflix’s adaptation follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) — Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, and Number Five — as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.
On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.
But not everything went according to plan.
In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

Colm Feore (House of Cards) as world-renowned billionaire industrialist and eccentric inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves; Jordan Claire Robbins as more-than-she-appears family matriarch Grace Hargreeves; and Adam Godley (Breaking Bad) as the voice of Pogo, a genetically engineered, tweed jacket-wearing, talking chimpanzee who is also the family advisor and mentor.
The Umbrella Academy also stars award-winning singer/actress Mary J. Blige (Mudbound) as ruthless, time traveling hitwoman Cha-Cha; Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) as her deadly efficient partner Hazel; Ashley Madekwe (Revenge) as Detective Patch, a driven, fast riser within the police department investigating a series of murders – and The Academy; John Magaro (The Big Short) as Leonard Peabody, who begins to take music lessons from Vanya and sees something special in this constantly dismissed wallflower, and Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) as The Handler, the head of the Commission and Number Five’s former boss.

A month after Chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf announced at the network’s Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press event that production on Fargo season 4 was set to begin this fall in Chicago, a major name is being addedto the cast. Uzo Aduba (Orange in the New Black, Mrs. America) will star opposite comedian/actor Chris Rock (upcoming Saw remake-reboot-sequel) in a main role. Aduba plays Zelmare Roulette – reportedly “a ruthless recent escapee from prison who joins forces with the Cannon family” – in Noah Hawley‘s Emmy award-winning anthology series.
Additional cast members include Jessie Buckley (Oraetta Mayflower), Salvatore Esposito (Gaetano Fadda), Andrew Bird (Thurman Smutney), Jeremie Harris (Leon Bittle), Gaetano Bruon (Constant Calamita), Anji White (Dibrell Smutney), Francesco Acquaroli (Ebal Violante), Emyri Crutchfield (Ethelrida Pearl Smutney), Amber Midthunder (Swanee Capps), Jack Huston (Odis Weff), Jason Schwartzman (Josto Fadda), Ben Whishaw (Rabbi Milligan), Glynn Turman (Doctor Senator), Corey Hendrix (The Chi), and newcomer Matthew Elam.
Hawley returns as showrunner, writer and director. Joel & Ethan Coen, Warren Littlefield, and John Cameron have also served as executive producers – with production handled by MGM Television and FX Productions.
In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations — that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the US at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago — and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities — you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream. In Kansas City, two criminal syndicates — one Italian, led by Donatello Fadda, one African American, led by Loy Cannon (Rock) — have struck an uneasy peace, which the heads of both families have cemented by trading their youngest sons.Together they control an alternate economy — that of exploitation, graft and drugs. This too is the history of America.
Cannon is the head of one family, a man who — in order to prosper — has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable. And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes.
It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.
Interestingly, Hawley wasn’t sure what direction Fargo would take if there was a fourth season of the series when he spoke to The New York Times in June 2017:
“I don’t. It’s a big challenge, every one of these — to come up with both a crime to hang it on and a large cast of characters on a collision course — each has to be new and interesting and have a different point of view. But we are exploring certain archetypes that are inescapable on a moral spectrum: There always has to be a Marge and a Jerry and a [Steve] Buscemi and a Peter Stormare, those kinds of pure good and pure evil and moral challenges in the middle. At a certain point, you don’t want to repeat yourself, so the question becomes: ‘What’s left to say? What’s interesting to say?’”

With season 14 set to premiere on Wednesday, September 25, FXX‘s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now tied with ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running live-action comedy series. Now that’s a title Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) would be more than happy to hang behind the bar – and one they’re expected to hold on their vey own very soon. Safe to say things are pretty good for The Gang from Paddy’s Pub – and from the sounds of FX CEO John Landgraf, the network would like things to keep going “pretty good” for two more seasons (at least).
While we keep our fingers, toes, and various other body parts crossed with the hope that a trailer drops very, very soon (you can steal a sneak preview here), the fine folks at It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are giving us ideas on how to stay in shape while we wait.
Next up on our “Paddy’s Power Plan,” we have a finely detailed workout from none other than “Diamond” Dennis Reynolds, with his “Bod by God” path to righteous abs. From the stealth-like ability to run away (or keep someone from running away) and being able to unlock (lock?) a door in record-breaking time to counting (embellishing) our number of “conquests,” do you knw what the best part of this workout plan is?

Last week, McElhenney posted a teaser that’s clearly from the upcoming episode that finds The Gang putting up their apartments as AirBnB options – of course, to better their love lives (more on that below). What makes this episode particularly special? It’s also one of two episodes Howerton is set to direct this season.

McElhenney also gave us a look inside the editing room at a scene he referred to “as Sunny as it gets.” Without spoiling what you’re about to see, here are a few things to keep in mind: Mac is still way too submissive to Dennis, Frank’s behind on getting his teeth sharpened, Dee finds herself on the losing end of a comment once again – and a familar face returns:
Previously, McElhenney confirmed filming on the season was complete (trailer soon?!?). But better than that, in the video below we see that even after 14 seasons-and-counting, McElhenney, Howerton, Day, Olson, and DeVito still find ways to make each other laugh – and that speaks volumes for the show’s incredible success:
Here are some highlights from the show’s Television Critics Association (TCA) set visit from earlier this month, offering some clues to what fans can expect:
● For McElhenney, one of the reasons the show has lasted this long is that the fanbase knows the series isn’t a “how to” guide to life:
“Our audience knows where we’re coming from. We very rarely get blowback because our audience is savvy enough to know we’re not advocating bad behavior, we’re satirizing it.”
●While the show isn’t afraid to tackle some major social issues – Olson believes their approach to the topics creates a unique character for the television landscape: a woman who not only recognizes the misogyny around her but is willing to get angry – very angry: “We’re showing how ridiculous is to talk to someone like that.”
● So what can fans expect this season? Well, we know Dolph Lundgren… but as John Thundergun?!? We are getting a “film noir” episode – as well as episodes dealing with global warming, a Waiting for Godot-themed outing set in the middle of a laser tag game, and The Gang putting up their apartments as AirBnB options to better their love lives (with Howerton set to direct this episode and an additional one).
● As for Mac getting a boyfriend at some point next season, McElhenney only response? “Maybe.” As for Mac being a changed, better person after last season? Don’t hold your breath:
“He’s pretty much exactly the same. Our characters might change — but they don’t evolve. He’s not a better person.”
● One thing that bothers Day? That people still see the show as “dirty” – even after over a decade on the air:
“There’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what our show is. I hate that our show is dismissed as filthy. I don’t think we’re dirty…We are trying to say something about us as Americans.”
DeVito put it much more bluntly when it comes to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: “It’s not a dirty f***ing show!”
Developed by McElhenney and Howerton, and written/executive produced by McElhenney, Howerton, and Day, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was FX’s first comedy hit before moving over to FXX – a fact that FX CEO John Landgraf does not take lightly when he explained at the Television Critics Association (TCA) why the series has been so successful for so long – even after all this time: “It was the fist successful deconstruction and reconstruction of a sitcom,” praising the leads as “five really hilarious degenerates who are most active schemers” as well as the main reason for the show’s success – while also acknowledging the various “social issues” that the series addressed so effectively in the past.

After months of rumors, mindless speculation, and several instances of serious misdirection, Breaking Bad fans finally received the news they were waiting for: Vince Gilligan is returning to tell one more (???) tale with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Written and directed by Gilligan and set to premiere on Netflix on October 11, the film focuses on what happened to Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) after the credits rolled on “Felina” and asks an important question: will Jesse be a victim of the past, or can he carve out a new future for himself.
So more than a month should be enough time to do a little Paul-assigned “homework,” in the form of a clip from Breaking Bad he posted on social media via Screenplayed. As Paul puts it, it’s “a moment from Breaking Bad to slowly prepare you all for what’s to come.” From “One Minute” (season 3, episode 7), here’s the moment when Jesse turns down Walter’s (Bryan Cranston) offer – and Walter:

The Netflix Television Event EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE reunites fans with Jesse Pinkman (Emmy-winner Aaron Paul). In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.
This gripping thriller is written and directed by Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad. The movie is produced by Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein, Charles Newirth, Diane Mercer and Aaron Paul, in association with Sony Pictures Television.
While the trail of breadcrumbs began much earlier, we’re going to pick up in early June 2019, the Tony Award-winning Cranston was quizzed for details on the project by Entertainment Tonight – and it turned out to be just as vague and entertainingly uninformative as he wanted it to be:

● With all of this talk about his appearing in it – it turns out Cranston hasn’t even read the script yet… just like we have a really sweet bridge leading to Brooklyn that we an let you have on cheap:
“Yes, there appears to be a movie version of Breaking Bad. The new film will apparently focus on Jesse Pinkman’s story. But I, honestly have not even read the script. So I couldn’t tell you. ‘I have not gotten the script. I had not read the script, so there’s a question of whether we’d even see Walter White in this movie! Think about that one.”
● While having not seen the script… Cranston says the project will (“would”?) bring a number of characters’ storylines to their natural conclusion:
“It’s a great story, and there’s a lot of people who felt that they wanted to see some sort of completion to some of these storylines that were left open.”
Cranston’s on-screen partner in crime is right on board with him: speaking at the Sun Valley Film Festival in March 2019, the actor wouldn’t confirm or deny production on the project – but he did address returning for a Breaking Bad project in broader terms and to Jesse Pinkman specifically at a Variety-sponsored event:
“Rumors are funny — I once heard a rumor that I was being cast as Han Solo. I haven’t heard anything about the ‘Breaking Bad’ movie but if there is one and it comes together I’d love to be a part of it.”
To punctuate the point further and to clear up any confusion anyone might still have about his position, Paul reiterated: “If it were to happen, yes, I would love to do it.” As for the “why,” it’s pretty simple: “In case you haven’t caught up on the TV series, Walter dies, so….it has to star Jesse.”
And let’s not forget about Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk, who seemingly confirmed the film three days before it was announced (“I find it hard to believe you don’t know it was shot.”); and then there was that Netflix screw-up that revealed the name.
Reports circulated that Gilligan was working on a two-hour movie based on the critically-acclaimed AMC series in November 2018. Earlier reports had El Camino filming under the fake/working title Greenbrier.
Though Cranston has already gone on record (on The Dan Patrick Show) to say he’s open to a return, too:
“I would, I would. Absolutely. If Vince Gilligan asked me to do, sure, absolutely. He’s a genius. It’s a great story and there’s a lot of people who felt that they wanted to see some kind of completion to some of these storylines that were left open and this idea, from what I’m told, gets into at least a couple of the characters who were not completed as far as their journey.”
Greenbrier was described as “following the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom” – which fell directly in line with Jesse’s escape from Albuquerque after the violently fatal events of series finale ‘Felina.’ The road to El Camino began in late 2018 in New Mexico, with The Albuquerque Journal first reporting on the project through documents filed through the New Mexico Film Office. For their part, the office would only confirm that a project with the title Greenbrier is slated to shoot in that area during the time period listed.

Meanwhile, series co-creator Seth Rogen revealed that he’s seen the first episode – and it’s more than any of them could’ve imagined:
“They already have more resources for the second season. They’re adding more characters, the scope of the show organically grows as the show continues. We just watched, actually, the first episode of the second season this week. It was a wonderful thing as producers. This is way better than I ever could’ve hoped it would be.”
With the series released and work on the second season underway, Rogen believes having the first season out there as a resource for the returning actors helps ease the process of getting back into “character mode”:
“With a show like The Boys, especially, where the tone is so unique, for the actors to be able to watch the show and to see like, ‘Oh, that’s what it is.’ It allows them to come back completely locked into it.”
Though it seemed pretty inevitable when news leaked that Aya Cash (You’re The Worst) was in negotiations for the role of Stormfront if a second season was ordered, Amazon Prime made the second-season renewal official at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) – one week before the highly-anticipated series premiered – and they’re bringing Cash along with them.
In the comic books series. Stormfront is a male character, a member of super team Payback – and representative of every nightmarish aspect of the Neo-Nazi agenda. Even scarier, his power levels put him on par with he Homelander and Black Noir. Having Stormfront serve as a maternal figure to the two would definitely be a nice twist to the narrative.

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, THE BOYS centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

As fans of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould‘s Breaking Bad prequel/sequel/parallel series Better Call Saul patiently await the fifth season in 2020 (as well as speculate over rumors that the sixth season will be its last), series star Bob Odenkirk spoke with Deadline Hollywood‘s Matt Grobar to offer a few more insights into the previous season as well as why he sees the upcoming season as “the best season we’ve ever done.”
If you’re a fan of the Breaking Bad universe, the interview is an excellent use of your time (and you can find it here) – but our biggest takeaway/highlight definitely fell in the “Still to Come” category:
● Odenkirk isn’t exactly shy when asked what he can say about the new season. Let’s just say he’s pretty pleased…
“It’s the best season we’ve ever done, it’s going to blow your mind, and I’m not kidding about either of those things. It’s f*cking awesome. I can’t wait for people to see it. It’s just shattering in every direction, and I love it.”
● Though he’s promised Kim (Rhea Seehorn) that he would go the straight-n-narrow – considering most of us have seen Breaking Bad, we know how well that’s going to go this season. What is it about Jimmy that keeps sending him down the path to “Saul”?
“Listen, I think he’s impatient. He’s a restless soul. A lot of people are, and it’s almost considered a plus, or a positive, in our modern society. “You should be wanting more, and if you’re not wanting more, I’m sure you feel like there’s something wrong with you.” But he does have a restlessness about him that he cannot calm down—and that, I think, causes a lot of his behavior, and choices that cause all kinds of trouble for him.”
Recently, Gould offered more insights into what viewers can expect when the series returns. Sitting down with Variety to discuss his approach to risky storytelling and season/series finales, Gould made two particularly interesting reveals:
● When asked about narrative ideas that “scare him” and how to make sure storylines stay true to the characters, Gould pointed out that it’s the characters themselves that will sometimes dictate where a story goes – then revealing that an episode during the upcoming fifth season that will best represent what they’ve always wanted the show to be:
“And the greatest thing is when the characters surprise you — when you go, “Wait a minute!” This season, Jimmy’s lost his brother, he’s pulled into himself and is almost affect-less, but then what gets him going is a job interview, is conflict, and you start to dig in, but we didn’t know that. We have ideas about where things are going but 99% of the time we’re wrong.
Right now we’re towards the end of shooting Season 5, and we have an episode which is pretty much what I pictured the show to be before we started, and it took us more than 40 some-odd episodes to get there. I think the great thing is you have to have faith in the characters. I personally save the fear for after the thing is done, so that’s why the screening is scary to me, but actually, when we’re writing and we’re on the set, that feels right and that feels good.”
● When asked how he balances bringing Better Call Saul to a satisfying ending that stays true to the series while also bridging nicely into Breaking Bad, Gould admitted that it can be a bit of balancing act – but as work progressed on the fifth season, “the fog cleared a little bit” on how the series will end:
“It’s like the devil’s Rubik’s cube because we not only have 40-something episodes of this show, but we also have 62 episodes of “Breaking Bad,” all of which have to make sense together. We have a list of “got to pay off stuff,” and the trick is we have to honor who these people are, but at the same time, we want the whole thing to be a coherent, internally consistent story, and that is really, really tough. Interestingly, we sort of had the same problem on “Breaking Bad,” and I remember Vince saying over and over again, “What if we hadn’t put that machine gun in the trunk?” Eventually we figured out why there was a machine gun in the trunk. This whole show is one giant machine gun in the trunk!
There are so many things we have to honor and pay off before the end, and at this point we are closer to the end than the beginning, so hopefully we’ll figure it out; we do have a lot of really smart people. I will say that the ending was really unclear to me but then as we were working on Season 5, it’s possible the fog cleared a little bit, but it’s possible it may end up not being true.”
AMC’s Better Call Saul season 5 is expected to premiere early 2020.
Gould also offered EW some initial insights on the upcoming season during a December 2018 interview:
● Now that Jimmy’s enjoying wearing the Saul mask longer and longer (or Saul’s hating wearing the Jimmy mask any longer than he has to), what’s the next stage in Saul’s “evolution”?
“It seems like Jimmy’s first move is to try to leverage all the contacts he has in the world of selling drop phones. But don’t forget, he also knows the vet [Caldera, played by Joe DeRosa], and the vet is sort of Craig’s List for the underworld in Albuquerque. So he can get quite far. The question is: how does he establish a reputation as not just a criminal lawyer but a criminal lawyer? And what does that mean to him at this point? Because situations may require him to do things and turn a blind eye to things that Jimmy McGill would not be able to stomach.”
● While it’s easy to get lost in the Better Call Saul “Jimmy/Saul” dynamic, let’s not forget about the third “character” in play here: post-Breaking Bad Jimmy alter-ego/Cinnabon manager Gene Takovic. Sounds like “Gene” has a fan in Gould…
“I am very, very interested in Gene Takovic. In some ways, Gene is very enigmatic. In some ways, he’s the opposite of Saul Goodman because he speaks so very little, he’s so afraid. But I’m fascinated by that situation and by the question of: is there still any chance of redemption or ray of light in this guy’s life after all the terrible things that he’s done, now that he’s run away and hidden himself in Omaha?”
● With talk of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) appearing on the series soon and talk of a Breaking Bad movie (El Camino was recently confirmed via a very well-received teaser), Gould would be interested in revisiting the Breaking Bad era again as they did during season 4 – as long as it works for the story:
“The question for us is always: are we telling the story of Jimmy McGill and Mike Ehrmantraut and Kim Wexler? And if showing scenes during the course of Breaking Bad add to that story or are important to that story or turn that story, then I think we should do them. But I don’t want to dip in to Breaking Bad just because we can.”
● Finally, Gould shared a question that fans should be asking themselves during the off-season – a question that Better Call Saul season 5 hopes to answer: “We know who Saul Goodman is, but who is Saul Goodman to Kim Wexler?”

The first season of Cobra Kai, the TV spinoff from the Karate Kid films, will be available to stream for free with YouTube’s shift to AVOD (ad-supported video on demand). The streaming service is hoping that the Karate Kid sequel series starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka will enough of a hook to sell the viewing audience on the change.

Cobra Kai is part of YouTube Premium, where monthly subscribers have full access to the platform’s original programming. Prior to the shift to AVOD, YouTube had only made the first episode of the first two seasons available for non-subscribers. To differentiate between AVOD viewers and Premium services, YouTube will release new episodes of original programming weekly on AVOD with ads while Premium subscribers will be able to binge without ads.

Cobra Kai’s become the platform’s most successful series to date, hitting nearly 55 million views for the first episode of the first season – with the second season premiere episode hitting nearly 75 million, making it the fastest YouTube Original to hit 20 million views (in six days, according to the streaming giant). Production for season three is slated to begin shortly, with the season expected to premiere some time in early 2020.
The limited first season promotion will also apply to the comedy series Liza on Demand, with its second season set to premiere on September 25; and action-drama series Impule, set to return on October 16.
YouTube’s applying the AVOD promotion to only the three aforementioned series following the cancellations of Step Up: High Water, Wayne, and the Dark Cargo pilot – which are all looking for new homes. The network’s looking to shift away from scripted projects, but will still maintain a programming slate of some originals.

Time to grab your pleather pants and hack into some robots, because The Matrix is back, baby. Variety has revealed that The Matrix co-creator Lana Wachowski will write and direct a fourth film in the series, with original series stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss set to return as Neo and Trinity.
HBO’s hit comedy series Silicon Valley is coming to an end this year with the sixth season. Not only is this the final season, but it’s also a bit of a shorter season with only seven episodes wrapping up the exploits of the tech company Pied Piper and the computer geniuses who founded it. Now the first Silicon Valley season 6 trailer has arrived, and it prominently features Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) testifying in front of the US Congress about the security of user data. And not unlike the real world instance of Mark Zuckerberg doing the same thing, it’s very cringeworthy.
Zach Woods, Kumail Nanjiani, and Martin Starr are all back for the final season, and some of the footage on display here seems to indicate there’s something to celebrate after Richard’s testimony. But T.J. Miller is still gone after being absent for the entirety of season five. Will they bring him back to close out the series, or was his departure from the show good enough? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’re hoping there will be some other returning characters for this final season.
When HBO announced the end of Silicon Valley earlier this year, series creators Alec Berg and Mike Judge had this to say:
“Silicon Valley has been a career and life highlight for us. We’ll miss it desperately, but we’ve always let Pied Piper’s journey guide the way, and Season 6 seems to be the fitting conclusion. We are forever indebted to our incredible cast, crew, and partners at HBO. At a certain point, there’s only so much we can do to make the world a better place.”
The good news is you can still get a good brand of Alec Berg’s comedy on HBO since he’s an executive producer on Bill Hader’s Emmy-nominated series Barry.
Silicon Valley returns for the sixth and final season on HBO starting on October 27, 2019.

As was the case during the first season, many real-life killers are characters in Mindhunter season 2. Some of these figures – Charles Manson, Son of Sam – will likely be well known to viewers. Others will be a bit more obscure. Below, we provide a Mindhunter season 2 guide to the nefarious killers that figure into the latest season of Netflix’s acclaimed serial killer drama.
Note: this article contains spoilers for season 2 of Mindhunter, as well as details about certain real-life figures that have not been featured on the show yet.
Mindhunter season 1 introduced viewers to Dennis Rader, aka BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill). The character wasn’t explicitly named in season 1, and while season 2 doesn’t reveal his real name, it does introduce the nickname BTK. As was the case in season 1, we get snippets of moments in the life of Dennis Rader as he goes about dealing with his compulsions. Rader killed between 1974 and 1991 and was finally apprehended in 2005. He killed 10 people. He’s currently serving 10 consecutive life sentences.
Between July of 1976 and July of 1977, David Berkowitz, aka the Son of Sam, shot and killed 6 people. Berkowitz claimed his crime spree was inspired by messages received from his neighbor’s dog, but as Mindhunter points out, this claim was more than likely a complete fabrication on Berkowitz’s part. Berkowitz is currently serving six consecutive life sentences.
William Pierce is one of the lesser-known killers highlighted in Mindhunter season 2. Pierce’s life of crime started out with a series of burglaries and arsons. He was incarcerated for these crimes in the 1960s but was paroled in 1970. Rather than turn his life around, Pierce ended up being suspected of nine murders between 1970 and 1971. Pierce was sentenced to life in prison in 1973.
Between 1977 and 1979, William Henry Hance murdered at least four women, making him one of the rare black serial killers. Hance was a soldier who preyed on prostitutes near military bases. He was convicted of three of his killings, and not tried for the fourth. In 1994, Hance was executed via the electric chair. Hence’s IQ was between 75-79 points, meaning he was intellectually disabled.
Between 1970 and 1973, Elmer Wayne Henley helped Dean Corll, aka the Candyman, abduct and murder 28 teenage boys and young men. Corll was the mastermind, relying on Henley and David Owen Brooks to help him lure in teen boys and young men as victims. Henley eventually turned on Corll, shooting him to death in 1973. Henley was sentenced to six consecutive 99-year terms in prison.
Ed Kemper, a memorable figure from season 1, returns for a brief appearance in season 2. Between 1972 and 1973, Kemper killed 10 people. Kemper was forthcoming about his crimes and even requested the death penalty. However, since capital punishment was suspended in California (where Kemper resided), he was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences. Since then, Kemper has waived his right to parole hearings – content to spend the rest of his days in prison.
Much fanfare is made about Charles Manson in Mindhunter season 2 – and you can understand why. He’s the ultimate boogeyman; the type of terrifying cult leader with deadly power over his minions. But one of the most remarkable things Mindhunter season 2 does is deflate the Manson persona. Manson is portrayed here as a rambling goon – a bullshitter who couldn’t be bothered to get his hands dirty. While Manson may not have committed the murders he was associated with, he played a major part in influencing his followers to go out and shed blood. Originally sentenced to death, Manson’s sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole. He died in prison in 2017.
Charles Denton “Tex” Watson was a member of the Manson Family who took part in the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969 that claimed the lives of Sharon Tate and others. Mindhunter underlines the fact that while Watson was heavily influenced by Manson, he also didn’t rule out the possibility that he would’ve committed murder on his own. Like Manson, Watson was originally sentenced to death, but his penalty was commuted to life in prison.
Paul Bateson was convicted of one murder: journalist Addison Verrill. Despite this, Bateson is often classified as a serial killer – since many believe he might have been responsible for the murders of six gay men who were dismembered, stuffed into bags, and dumped into the Hudson River. Interestingly enough, Bateson had a claim to fame before his murder conviction: he was a radiological technician who had a cameo during a lengthy hospital sequence in The Exorcist. Bateson was gay, and his alleged crimes against the six other men helped inspire Exorcist director William Friedkin to make Cruising, a thriller about a homosexual serial killer. Bateson was convicted of Verrill’s murder in 1979. He was eventually paroled in 2003. His current whereabouts are unknown.
The Atlanta Child Murders occupy a large chunk of Mindhunter season 2. Between 1979 and 1981, at least 30 children and young men were murdered in Atlanta, with the presumption that one person was involved in most – if not all – of the killings. Williams was apprehended in 1981 and eventually convicted of 2 of the murders. While law enforcement links him 23 of the 30 murders total, Williams was never charged or tried for the other murders. To this day, he claims he is innocent of all charges against him.

YouTube is living up to its promise to make all its YouTube Originals free. Starting this September, YouTube Originals like Cobra Kai, Impulse, Step Up: High Water, Mind Field, Foursome, and more will be available to stream to non-paying viewers. However, YouTube Premium subscribers will still enjoy the better viewing experience.
Last year, YouTube promised to make its original shows – which are currently exclusive to paying Premium members – available for free to non-paying viewers as ad-supporting programming. Finally, the website is living up to its word by making all original series, movies and live events accessible to the public starting September 24, 2019, according to Engadget.
Premium subscribers will still get an ad-free viewing experience as well as immediate access to every episode in a show’s new season. They’ll also get access to director’s cuts and bonus scenes. Meanwhile, non-paying viewers will have to wait for each episode to be released to the public — though a week’s long wait will probably be worth saving $12 a month for many viewers.
But this shift to free original programming signals a pivot away from scripted series for YouTube, which just last year had invested big bucks into original content in order to compete with streaming giants like Netflix and Hulu. But the Google subsidiary will now be shifting its focus to reality-driven projects headlined by celebrities and YouTube stars, according to an official statement (via Variety) YouTube made last year:
“As we look to 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and shift to make our YouTube Originals ad supported to meet the growing demand of a more global fanbase. This next phase of our originals strategy will expand the audience of our YouTube Original creators, and provide advertisers with incredible content that reaches the YouTube generation.”
YouTube’s original content run was brief but sweet, with Cobra Kai swiftly becoming the website’s flagship series and most critically acclaimed piece of content yet. It’s almost a shame that YouTube is pulling back on original programming while the going was good, but to be honest, it’s kind of a relief. We already have enough streaming services to subscribe to.

The official trailer is here for Bong Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or winner, Parasite, and while it may not be as genre-leaning as many of his earlier films (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja), it’s definitely pitch-black comedy with at least a small side of horror, so we can’t resist sharing it here.
Late author Mervyn Peake‘s “Gormenghast” novels have found a home at Showtime, with the cable network set to develop an adaptation of the fantasy drama alongside some of the biggest names in popular culture: writer Toby Whithouse (Doctor Who), Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, American Gods) and Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind). Co-produced by American Gods producer Fremantle and Showtime, the project has reportedly been given a script-to-series comitment deal and a writers’ room opened. The CBS-owned cable network was able to secure the deal with Gaiman involved as the project falls outside his deal with Amazon.

The BBC once tried but they were all making it in times when depicting the impossible on the screen was too difficult. The great thing now is that we can make it and actually show it and take you there. We are now in a world where you can put the impossible on screen and with Gormenghast, you’re not just dealing with a castle the size of a city but dealing with these incredibly glorious and memorable people.”

Whitehouse is set to executive produce alongside Gaiman, Goldsman, Dante Di Loreto, Oliver Jones, Barry Spikings (The Deer Hunter), and David A. Stern (Howards End).

Although only three books of the series were published during Peake’s lifetime (Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone), a fourth book (Titus Awakes) was completed by Peake’s wife, Maeve Gilmore, from notes the author left behind. With the first novel originally published in 1946, here’s a look at an overview of the original trilogy:

At the center of it all is the seventy-seventh Earl, Titus Groan, who stands to inherit the miles of rambling stone and mortar that form Gormenghast Castle and its kingdom, unless the conniving Steerpike, who is determined to rise above his menial position and control the House of Groan, has his way.
In these extraordinary novels, Peake has created a world where all is like a dream – lush, fantastical, and vivid. Accompanying the text are Peake’s own drawings, illustrating the whole assembly of strange and marvelous creatures that inhabit Gormenghast.

Say the word “blacklight” and you either think of cheesy dorm-room decor or a means to find stains on a bed. The connotations are not what’d you call good. For artists, though, blacklight can give already cool images a bit of a kick, and that’s what’s happening in this brand new art show.
It’s been a long haul, people – but by now, millions of you know it was more than worth the wait. Amazon Prime Video‘s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s comic book series The Boys has been sticking some righteously sweet superhero three-point landings since it premiered on Friday, July 26 – and spoiler? Two days after showrunner/EP Eric Kripke‘s took to Twitter to show his appreciation for The Boys becoming one of Amazon Prime’s most successful shows by sharing the first official image from production on season 2, Karl Urban is giving fans a look at second-season Butcher on what appears to be a not-so-great day for the Spice Girls-quoting team leader. Though it seemed pretty inevitable when news leaked that Aya Cash (You’re The Worst) was in negotiations for the role of Stormfront if a second season was ordered, Amazon Prime made the second-season renewal official at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) – one week before the highly-anticipated series premiered – and they’re bringing Cash along with them.
In the comic books series. Stormfront is a male character, a member of super team Payback – and representative of every nightmarish aspect of the Neo-Nazi agenda. Even scarier, his power levels put him on par with he Homelander and Black Noir. Having Stormfront serve as a maternal figure to the two would definitely be a nice twist to the narrative.

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, THE BOYS centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.
THE BOYS is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes.
On the side of The Boys, Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher is mysterious and brutal, hiding a personal agenda as he approaches potential new recruit Hughie (Jack Quaid), claiming to be a shadowy government operative. Butcher capitalizes on Hughie’s rage over his girlfriend Robin’s accidental death at the hands of Superhero A-Train and enlists Hughie as part of his plan to bring down the super-hero franchise.
Rounding out Butcher’s team are Laz Alonso (The Mysteries of Laura) as second-in-command Mother’s Milk; Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad) as The Female, a young Asian assassin with blistering fighting skills who happens to have superpowers; and Tomer Capon as unpredictable wild card Frenchie, a brutal warrior when who lives a life of no attachments or responsibilities.
On the flip side, The Seven are Antony Starr (American Gothic) as The Homelander, leader of the main superhero team, The Seven; Dominique McElligott (The Last Tycoon) as Queen Maeve, a member of The Seven; Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) as The Seven member The Deep, an aquatic hero; Jesse T. Usher (Survivor’s Remorse) as speedster with a major PR problem, A-Train; Nathan Mitchell (iZombie) as Black Noir, a masked superhero with fighting and Set martial arts skills; and Alex Hassell as perverted invisible hero Translucent (who’s not really…you know… “translucent”).
Erin Moriarty (Jessica Jones) joins the cast as Starlight/Annie, a young woman who can make lightning bolts flash from her eyes and dreams of being a “real superhero” like the famous Seven; Elisabeth Shue‘s (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Karate Kid) super-hero handler Madelyn Stillwell is the Vice President of Hero Management for Vought and the person responsible for cleaning up after the “heroes.” Jennifer Esposito (NCIS, Blindspot) has also been cast in the recurring role of CIA Agent Susan Raynor, with Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) set as Hughie’s father and Billy Zane (Titanic) also set to make a guest appearance this season.
Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Ennis and Robertson, The Boys was developed by showrunner Kripke (Supernatural), who also serves as writer, executive producer and directed the season finale. Joining Kripke as executive producers are Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver (Preacher), Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz (Prison Break), Pavun Shetty (New Girl), and Ori Marmur (Preacher), as well as Ken Levin and Jason Netter. Ennis and Robertson also co-executive produce, with the pilot episode directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane).
Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television Studios co-produce the Amazon Prime Video with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film.
